My Spang just got back from a union break. Now we’re re-negotiating with the a-Lang 🤯
"So what you're going to do is start with the Spang-a-Lang and then you're going to tell the Spang to go take a Union break or somethin' ..."
Cracked me up. I'm dead.
I don't have a spang a lang ,more like a, lang a spang .ugh.
10:06 "OHHHhhhh!" Channelling your inner Purdie! I just HOWLED! 🤣🤣🤣 Faces too. 🤣
Belated happy birthday from England.
I knew you could break it down better than most, the practice pad method is perfect, thank you !!
Learning the Purdie Shuffle moved me from the depths of frustration as a novice drummer to a confident player having much more fun. It gave me a completely new understanding of groove, and allowed me to incorporate its principles into many other styles of playing. Thank God for the Purdie Shuffle!
What about thanks to Bernard Purdie?
He gotta get props👈🏿🫡
Same here 😂
I hope the people you gig with know how good they have it. Your playing can hold anything togather.
Came here a while ago, left to work on my alang, came back. Can now do it. Thank you.
You were right sir, this was indeed the purdie lesson I needed to see, Thanks
My man beat down Brown I'm telling you I've been playing drums on and off for 10 years and I always wondered how do drummers get such a tight pocket groove like that I appreciate it just this one groove helps tie everything I know together perfectly thank u your a great teacher please 🙏 keep it up peace and love brother ✊🏾
Pro drummers get that tight pocket by practicing for hours a day & then playing five shows a week & maybe a couple of recording sessions in-between...Definitely no time for another job..."on & off" wont cut it>
Been chasing this for a while, always focused on left. Gonna try right. TY
You nailed it! I recently watched a video on the history of the shuffle. It comes from the sound of a steam locomotive shuffling down the tracks. The high hat / ride cymbal "spang-a-lang" is the pistons in the engine driving the whole thing.
I've played this beat since 66. OMG! You've broken it down so that I understand what my muscles were doing. Tkx.
I'm a find that 1 dislike hater I'm a get you and do the purdie shuffle on yah.
He man
Good explanation! I have played in a reggae band for 25 years, this drum riddim looks like a halfdrop . The swing feeling is about the same. Had a workshop from
Jim Chapin ones, he talked about the muller techniek. One hit going down one in the middle and one going up. I would play the first and the last .thanx for sharing 👊
This beat confused the living shit out of me when i was learning drums in the 90's. Someone finally showed me the Bonham shuffle and then it dawned on me lol.
Man Rob, you have gotten one of cleanest shuffles
It probably helps that your last name is Brown lol 😂
Awesome because i find it easy to play a swing groove your tutorial was really great-thank you
Learned it in a few seconds once you explained the jazz swing similarity thing
Excellent lesson. This one of those things that's not all that hard to play, but it takes real skill to get it grove. Great playing and demonstrating.......
Wow! I don’t think I’ve ever seen or heard someone breakdown the Purdie Shuffle quite like that. Thank you so much for REALLY breaking things down in such a simple way. I just started playing drums a few years ago and I’ve been playing on and off since then. I recently got very serious about my playing and after watching this video, you definitely blew my mind! I was focusing too much on the ghost notes and not working on tightening up my hi-hat work. Thank you so much for sharing!
He did everything cept "splain" and the "uh ee oh ow" sound fx..
Thank you thank you thank you ! Great way of breaking it down.
Pocket!! Hope the band follows.
THANK YOU so much mate. I could do the basics of this but like you said, it still sucked. I looked at a lot of Purdie/Porcaro shuffle vids but as you say they didn't show how to do the right hand even though it's clear that this is the most important bit. It's taken ages for someone of your calibre to put this much needed video up there. Respect.
A Happy Belated Birthday Rob ,Love The Parody Shuffles ,⛪🎊🎉.
Just coming across your page.
I've been learning the basics for a year (sheet music, rudiments, beats and fills), but your content is KILLER real world stuff. Loving how you're able to take my fundamentals and now teach me to have FUN with with! Looking forward to diving into your videos!
Happy belated birthday, Rob! Don't know how I missed it. What a wonderful drummer and teacher you are! Thanks again for all you do!
Thanks a bunch, man 🎉🙂
Watching tap dancers actually helped my drumming and of course Rob.
@@RobBeatdownBrown Happy Birthday from the Shinobi ken🥞.
Once again, really helpful & clear video. Thanks so much! You are the man Rob 🤛
Man this guy grooves!! :) I love Bernard Purdie, the man oozes class and character, a total individual, out there for so long bustin some great grooves and coming up with more than a few along the way.
His instructional videos were and are so entertaining, informative and inspiring as well, I really can't say enough about how much the man himself made me feel at ease with his off-the-wall approach and very humane way of seeing things, he was a confidence booster for me and I have never even met the guy!
great explanation of the shuffle
"I know there might be some of you out there wondering how old I am. I can tell you straight up, man. I don't feel anywhere near..." INTRO! That had me crackin up, man. You're the shit, Rob. Here's to many many more years of the amazing talent you bring to the groove community.
Master Rob ' Beat Down ' Brown in the house!!+
Happy Purd Day!
That you Sir. My shuffle is coming together now. It’s rough but it will be dope with practice. I still would love you to do a DC Go Go lesson.
You did it man! My problem was the a-lang all along. Thanks! This thing was getting me down.
Thanks a lot for a great information. Cheers from Munich, Germany
Dam, dats 1st thing I thought I saw you n heard I said “oh man dats swing” n as ya know wat blew me mind dat ya wasn’t make big deal outta it ya was doin nice n easy no big work to get all dat wonderful swing sound on dos triplet! Blew my mind dats for sure! Wow, I can’t wait till later today I gonna try oh man, seemed so easy ‘looping the spangalang” wow, tanks 💥🚀💫!!!
Hi Rob! Amazing your notice about that right hand and how to use the Jazz swing as the basis for successful shuffles. Great remark! Thanks a lot!
If I had seen this video before, I probably wouldve learned the shuffle a LONG time ago. Great videos as usual. Rob, best drums teacher ever.
Thanks a lot, man 🙂🤘🏽
Always on the one
Best Purdie Shuffle lesson EVAH!!
Thanks 🙂👊🏽
Worst Purdie shuffle lesson EVAH ! ! !.
HB2U from Hungary! If i would choose one man as a drum teacher, you would be that one.
Happy brithday man. Sorry for the late b-day wish. Sounds like you had an awsome time. I've come to realize there's any old way to play a shuffle or any drum rhythm then there's the Rob Brown way.🥁💯
Excellent lesson.
I'm genuinely not exaggerating when I tell you that for the better half of a decade, I have been trying to find a way to help my brain understand and process the mechanics of this specific groove. That fundamental breakdown was so helpful, it allowed me to tie everything together. It's like I just leveled-up or something 😂
same
Love the Purdie Shuffle!
Happy Belated Birthday Brother Brown 🎂🇺🇸✌🏿️ keep the funk Flowin !
10:11 feelin ittttt
Brilliant video man, thanks so much!
Amazing content as always Rob! I was about to leave a comment on your other shuffle video asking about your super clean right hand technique, then I remembered you saying there was an important tip in this one ahaha
Rob, that new snare is killer... especially the ghost notes! Great lesson!
Happy Belated Birthday Brother Brown!
Perfect explanation! I learned a bit of this from Bonham and Picaro, but you’ve got the magic dust to help us get it right!
Love you man!!
Thanks man 🙂✌🏽
The hard thing is to talk and make ohhh sound at the same time haha. Thx for a Great channel man!
happy belated birthday from australia buddy, you crack me up mate, lol, thanks for all your tips.. cheers
Happy birthday Rob, that's my mommas birthday too! You're awesome!
Great advice! I’m gonna go practice now!
Another great lesson
Tank you so much now I have better understandig waths is all about by the way happy birthday
Delivering yet another smooth beatdown. Very nice
Your pocket is pretty deep and I loved Bernies groove watched his lesson on it many times always kinda reminds of Fool in the Rain 🥁
I don't remember if Bonham's shuffle in "Fool in the Rain" is based on the Purdie shuffle or if it's a case of convergent evolution.
Haha thanks for the shout out forgot to say props for the traditional grip some say it doesn’t matter yet the ghost notes just aren’t the same with matched IMO 🃏
My dude, you are the best kinda dope!!
Pretty new to drumming; Never really understood this shuffle business. 😅
Don’t want to discredit anyone; the seed was definitely planted, but your video really unlocked things.
PS: for any kids reading my note: dope was a metaphor; stay away from drugs! 😳
Thanks my dude!!
Thanks so much for this!!
Happy Birthday!
Spang, alang. My teacher at school used quite a few words to get the groove. Do,whac,k-do was his spang, alang. Whac being when you slap the snare. Only an idea for you as your Steve Gadd chop was a lot easier with the chicken, biscuit thing.😁👍
My high-school percussion teacher just used 1, 2, a, 3
Hey man, love your vibe, love how you pointed out the ride hand as key. Love those Yammies and how they sound. Positive +++
Dude!!you the brotha love!!
Thanks! merry Christmas.
Another absolutely brilliant video Rob, thank you.

Hey mate. Happiest belated birthday wishes. Here's to many, many more and keep the beat breakdowns coming. Cheers from Brisbane, Australia ;-)
Great Rob love it
That Purdie stank face is to die for.
Fantastic Rob ! The bass drum sounds great ( John bonham sound ) Have you changed the bass drum set up for the shuffle ?... psThanks a bunch . Inspirational
No changes
. Same heads and tuning. I just shoved the mic inside the port about an inch
Happy Belated bDAY from Japan!!
I do need help with this one because I have been playing drums a long time and the Purdie Shuffle still gives me trouble and makes me look like a chump..thank you..can't wait to practice this way..love the Tee
Ehh you don't look like a chump. It is a tricky one. Just give it time dude ✌
After not playing drums for nearly 20 years i recently picked up the sticks again. I discovered this guy after trying to figure out how to play doubles properly and now im on the way to being able to shuffle properly. Love this channel!
I'm not a drummer, but I have a drum kit. One time I was teaching myself a rhythm, and my left hand unintentionally hit a few perfectly placed ghost notes that sounded awesome and totally elevated the feel.
I couldn't willingly replicate them. I had to wait until they happened by themselves, and to this day I still have no clue how to hit those tiny ghost notes intentionally.
So yeah! They're called ghost notes for a reason. The ghost of a drummer pushes down your stick ever so slightly to hit those groovy notes! 😝
You are the ONLY one that properly honed in on THE key item! I am buying a sweatshirt for this one reason alone!
Ron, took up the drums again after 55 years. Your lessons are great! The tips on the Purdue shuffle really worked. Couple more months and I’ll be on the road looking for groupies...Do groupies dig 68 yer old guys?
50 year old groupies do! 😄👌🏽
All I can say is damn! I have been way overworking this thing. Thanks Rob! You taught an old dog some new tricks...again!
Sounds kinda like the beat from zeppelin's fool in the rain.
Yep very similar apart from a slightly different kick and the hi hat bark on the offbeat triplet bit (hard to get that in there I find)
Makes me feel guilty for not having a Yamaha kit.
Great video BTW...the way you sound isolate your room...would that be enough for an apartment on ground floor with only neighbours upstairs??
Today’s lesson was taught by Rob ‘Shuffledown’ Brown. Excellent lesson.
Super excellent. "Shuffledown" sounds like a funky breed of long haired sheep
Left hand: AINT NOTHIN BUT REBOUND
10 or so minutes in:
"Dang it, Beatdown!" I mutter under my breath as I go for my practice pad because the kids are asleep. My wife glares at me as I spangalang on into the night, my right foot occasionally tapping out a Bo Diddly on the dining room floor. Once more, she cannot get through her TV show without the maddening "TAKKITA-TAKKITA-TAKKITA" of hickory on gum rubber. Once more, I shall end up sleeping on the couch.
Beatdown done got me again.
Knock down ur looking good Bro.. Been here from 10 thousand.. Now OVER 102 an GOING.. Thanks u helped me a lot
Rob, I have a question for you : what is the equivalent in French of Spang alang ?
Lol. The left hand tips were the beat part. Hes right
awesome lesson, thx 🤘👍
Dude you’re awesome. Great drummer, even better teacher. Thanks so much bro your videos are making me fall in love with music and drumming.
Happy Birthday sorry I am little late!
Late is fine as long as you’ve brought wings 🍗
