*Hey y'all! This lesson is timestamped in the description box! So after you do me a solid and watch the whole thing front to back 😏 You can go straight back to your favourite shuffle anytime and start sheddin' * 🤘🏽😎
Thanks for the timestamps, easy to understand breakdown of the patterns, and as always, great vids!!!
Love that snare drum .??
Dude - you KILT this tutorial. Masterful.
Sir,what is your stick size ? :)
GREAT vid man!!! Thank you!!!!!!!!!!!!
I'm a self taught drummer, i started with punk rock. I can play, but it's very stiff and loud. Now that I'm fighting cancer I don't have a job anymore, but more time to exercise. This video helped me the most of all there is online. With the tips from the one mentioned in the video, I'm really getting better. Combined with the pills, playing drums is my best medication! Thank you Rob for making this fight more fun!
hang in there buddy!!
I’m so sorry man
Way to not lay down and give up.
Get. Into. Funk n soul! I did more rock-ish things as well and like you said loud and I could never get those ghost notes sounding perfect. I got into funk and soul (talking some old school stuff like 60s-80s) parliament, George Clinton, Otis Redding, James Brown; its so fun to play along too and it's great for feeling the music and being one with the kit so to speak
💪💪💪💪
That’s the best breakdown explanation I’ve ever seen, reduced the tempo, removed parts then added one by one and back up to tempo...
i agree
And here i am. Still struggling 😂 I'm a metal drummer normally so I've been struggling trying to build a solid shuffle. Definitely not the first thing I play day to day.
Great tutorial! Really simplified the mechanics of these great grooves.
I never knew how uncoordinated I was until I started these shuffles. all the parts are so simple until you put them all together. Ive been playing drums for years, the shuffle for me was a nightmare until now.
A total brain rewiring. The most important thing for me to focus on is the - a lang hihat, its what ties them all together. When I tried this in the past my hi hat was a spastic mental patient, thats why I could never get it.
@@donnypatoine4475 Same!
Nothing opened up my abilities more than learning to play a proper shuffle. This may sound kinda abstract or whatever but, it really requires you to have limb independence and to feel the spaces between the beats, and to not rush anything at all. That's just based on my own feelings.
Rob: if you’re not on your kit- get on your kit!
Me in bed at 3AM: on my way!
💓
xD same
Same lol!
This is great for physical leaners, too many teachers just use sheet music, please keep doing this!!!!
Yes and visual learners benefit from the greater use of illustrating the concept at different tempos. Too much verbal.instruction in music is not usually effective as 99.999% of our teacher's verbal cadence and tone is not inside or reflective of the music they are teaching.
Good groveers 🎉
I'm glad he didn't explain everything he was doing , I find it easier to just watch someone or listen to it, then I have a pretty good idea what to do, and try to copy it
exactly
Yapp. Guys who r commenting what They do only interrupt the concentration on what they r doing
Anton Maclean I’m with you on that. This might be helpful. It’s a triplet between the high hat and snare with some ghost noting in between accents. The only thing that changes between each shuffle is the bass drum part.
With you on that Anton.
Play by ear, play by sight. To get to the other side.
Also like his pattern breakdowns- 4 bars of each. He let's the drums do most of the talking. No distracting chatter
The ghost notes on Bohnam and Picarro (both borrowed from Bernard Purdie )are my challenge.
Better get back to it.
Finally someone that knows how to present a beat, I tip my hat good Sir.
But your not wearing a hat 😭 liesssss lol jk
Stan Marsh he’s tipping his high hat
Oh ho ho ho! Jolly good show Sir!
The Gadd shuffle is awesome and will now probably take over my life for the next month.
The doubles on the kick drum are so consistent. Two different sounds - light and accented - and consistently played every time. This guy's a ringer fellas 🤘😃
I could listen to that Bonham shuffle for hours!😂 For a lover of groove it's so addictive. I love Zep but Fool in the Rain would never appear in my list of favourite Zep songs. But the shuffle beat -man, it's so gorgeous!
That is the clearest explanation of classic shuffles, ever!!
Again a great lesson! I love how you play slow patterns for a long period of time!
No one else does this. It takes me watching repeated slower patterns for an extended play along session to get what’s happening. Others show the individual sticking and then go to faster speeds immediately and I have to keep trying to rewind and find certain spots over and over again where I can’t get in the groove of it. You get this a right.
A student needs to play along with the teacher at 1st
Also:
an incredible Snare drum!
Perfect Bass tuning
Great choice of Hats
I definitely agree with you on the snare drum 🥁 and high-hats!!💯👍So cleen!!
Thanks a million rob.44 year old who's being away from the pots and pans for too long.used to be tight as xxxx back in my playing days.I find your vids excellent and great exercise, keep up the great work .thanks again ,dara from ireland
Rob: As a drummer. I want to thank you. To show, play and explains clear shuffles groves.
Thats the way.
❤❤❤❤
Perfect control and examples. Porcaro's "Rosanna" is one of the hardest, but when you break it down (especially the Bo Diddley part) and work up to speed it all makes sense.
out of all the years of videos of yours i have watched and loved to learn from,THIS IS MY ALL TIME NEW FAVORITE! This helped me 1000%! got off 24 hour fire dept duty and I will be in my drum studio all weekend jamming to this and learn these the right way! THANK YOU! - Robert Read, Atlanta Firefighter & Working local Drummer.
You are an excellent teacher, and drummer of course. The way you break it down and slow it down is great. Thank you for imparting your skills on us!
Finally a guy that knows how to show what he's doing! No gab! Just business. Thanks Rob
The Porcaro shuffle changed my life when I learned it. Thanks for showing me its siblings. Loving that 12/8!
The "Purdie Shuffle" is the "Daddy" of the Porcaro Shuffle!
That 12/8 variation was slammin'
@@blazebloop8626 the Purdie is the Daddy and Mommy of all that follows :)
I absolutely love the way he breaks it down !!
Great demonstration of the shuffle beats. Simple, easy to follow.
You are absolutely the best teacher of drumming I have ever seen! I stand in awe of you brother Rob
To me this is without doubt the best 'Shuffle' lessons on youtube...love the way you break it down, thanks Rob.
Soooo usefull ! Thank you for slowing down and isolate each part. That’s real teaching !
there are many "teachers" on youtube. But Two TEACHERS stand out to me. Eric Moore -with his happy attitude, and this guy -with his intelligence.
Slowing down the tempo and isolating the parts is SO helpful. Thanks Rob - this is outstanding!
Good drumming is like magic. Good drummers, magicians. Rob is an example.
That is a great lesson and great delivery. Rob is smoother than silk man! There are other tutorials for the various shuffles but Rob's instruction is superior and his groove is killer!
Funny, likable, entertaining and detailed...one of my favorite drum teachers on RUclips!
I love how you start with the full groove and work backwards. So much more interesting that way and for me a better way to learn. Then back into the groove. Good style thanks
I know this is an old vid for you, but it was just suggested today (you're in my algorithm from your drum tuning technique which was PERFECT). I'm a multi instrumentalist (mainly guitar and vocal) but grew up on a kit (my dad is a drummer and my main influence 😊). I've shared a few of your vids to some local studios I work with and I can't say enough about how much we've enjoyed and learned from these videos. Also, your sound and fluidity is addictive and your instruction videos are more musical than a lot of the crappy bands I've had to back over the years. Sorry for the long comment and THANK YOU for doing your thing!
Love John Bonham’s shuffle for fool in the rain, that took me a hell lot of time to learn, thanks for the shuffle video Rob
Ghost notes just in time for Halloween! Love the breakdowns.
Yuplol
I not only wish drum training videos knew but that ALL training videos knew that THIS is a great way to teach! Glad I found this video today - thanks!
Your vids on shuffles are by far the best I've seen. I had to learn the Bonham shuffle back in 97 for a cover band I would session with. FEEL is absolutely the most important part. Most videos I've seen go overboard trying to explain the ghost notes and don't focus enough on the feel. That's how I figured it out in 97. I pieced it all together after finding the feel for the groove. The ghost notes are the polish. It's refreshing to hear these grooves broken down like they should be. You're making many drummers lives a lot easier and a lot more fun. Thank you!
Very impressive lesson. Best and important lesson I’ve came across. 💯
Hey Rob-
you are with no equal the best "show & tell" drum instructor on the web! I'd love to meet you sometime!
I can’t tell you how helpful this video is. I got my shuffle going smooth and it feels sooo good
I’ve been drumming for 20 years and have gotten more learning the past few months from your videos than I had the previous 10 years. You the bomb BeatDown!
Wow, The Gadd did my head in, going to have to come back later for the last two! (and practice... practice boy, practice!)
Best shuffle video on RUclips & love the breakdown ! Wicked "Killer" lesson Rob ! You & Austin Burcham are my faves !
Thanks a bunch, man. Austin is indeed the dude 💯
This is simply a work of genius. The way you break the beats down and put them back together is outstanding! An excellent teaching aid. I can get through most of them, but that Steve Gadd high hat groove is wicked hard! I will get it - eventually. Thank you Rob.
Great video, slowing the shuffle down, taking away the snare etc; really worked for me! Thanks Rob👍🏻
That rimshot on the snare makes it ring very nicely.
Dude. That snare. A&F Drums are amazing. Their snares, to me, are among the very best modern snare you can buy.
💯
This is a top shelf video. Soooo useful, the way you break them down...like a machine! Thank you, man!
I love this. Very helpful for us that do not read sheet music. I've come to these videos to see if I was doing a shuffle somewhat correct. And now I will be practicing all of these styles.
Well done, Rob. Thats one of your most beautiful and valuable lessons. Your shuffle alone sounds like a perfect musical piece. Thus this shows again, why you are at least at the top three online drum teachers worldwide.
Huge compliment, man. Thanks 🙏🏽 🙂
Preach! A real shuffle separates the men from the boys.
I played drums in high school and have just recently started playing again after twenty years. I have watched at least ten of your videos. You are truly an exceptional teacher. I’m getting my groove back and you have been instrumental in that process. Many many thanks!
That crazy Steve Gadd guy and his hand/brain twisters. I've shedded most of my shuffles through the years starting with blues and jazz shuffles and working through Bernard's stuff and all the variants of it. So while watching this I was able to tap along pretty proficiently with all of these and look forward to work-shopping them in finer detail thanks to this lesson. But that Gadd shuffle flipped my brain upside down for a sec and is JUST the type of thing I've been looking for to add to the workout sessions. I love limb confusion and getting a new piece of independence added to my vocabulary, and I've been wanting to incorporate some closed hi-hat foot/hand grooves. This is a perfect jumping off point for that. Thanks man! I love all your stuff!
I love the way this is broken down ♥ You make it so simple to understand / hear . I will definitely be revisiting this video when I'm home. #subscribed
Sitting hear playing feeling a little stale, and I get a beat down shuffle notification! Thanks man!
I've watched them all but keep coming back to this dude cause he's the best teacher on RUclips. Thanks bro. 😊
such a smooth video to learn from. No nonsense and perfect for people like myself that like to just hear the thing and follow along and then broken down incase you missed something or count quite get part of it
love this analogic tool to slow down gradually.
Oooh that snare sounds soo good! 🥁🎶🤟
really good stuff Rob, thanx 4 sharing ! ... every serious music-loving audience loves listening to a musician (who's main instrument just happens to be the drums !) that can dramatically stand-out by staying 'in the pocket' , having fun and ultimately lead the band !! I will definitely be pacing through these essential exercises routinely ! - Paul Davis, Houston TX
I love your videos and can't get enough of them. Thank you!
Your videos are pushing my drumming to the next level. Thanks a lot! Big shout out from Brazil
Wuddup Brazil 🇧🇷 Shout out from Canada 🇨🇦🙂🤘🏽
Expertly done.
It gets no better than this 👏🏼
Also, A&F snare?? Sounds wonderful!
They’re all wonderful, but this is my favorite video you’ve done. Will be spending time with this one!
Watched this again I'm going to be going over my advanced student this week and Rob I must say that you nailed all the required shuffles that certainly should be in every drummers drumming vocabulary or like you say...In your Back pocket ♩🎶🎵🎹😎♩
Best breakdown ever.
That A&F snare sounds killer!👍🏾👍🏾
Love your channel! I am learning a lot after not playing for a long time and these are fun grooves to learn. Thank you Rob!
Man, THANK YOU!!! Nobody makes it this clear, in my searching. I have tried over and over to learn these beats on youtube, and am never sure of the details. It feels like they don’t really want you to know. Rob leaves nothing a mystery. I have been playing and learning instruments for 40 years, and this kind of patient, meticulous teaching is RARE af. Respect and gratitudes, Rob. Appreciate this guy, people.
MY MAN!!! Was just talking to a friend about this very subject... And I was wondering what I was going to do this weekend..... I should have known...
The shirt says it all 👍 .....those dislikes must be from speed metal players. BTW, those Hi Hats are outstanding.
I've been drumming my whole life and this is one of the most intelligent tutorials I ever seen. This is the way to teach every type of player. The skills he has achieved are obvious. WELL DONE! I have "Subscribed" Cheers!
LOVE this vid!! This is the definite shuffle instructional!! THANK YOU!!
Another killer video!!
Thank u Rob for a cool video God bless u,
Don't know if you look at this much, but you have a great way of instruction for shuffles. This is generous - you are far cool and kind, thank you!
Very helpful how you played by taking it apart and putting it back together in slow and regular/faster tempo.
Idk why but Ive never drummed in my life but I’m still watching
You are meant to start drumming. Do it!
You re the best dude! 🤘🏻😎
excellent breakdown .... love it when you eliminate 1 hand, then the other hand, and then back -up. Excellent lesson.
12/8 shuffles rule! Thanks again for rekindling my love for these grooves. Cheers!!
Texas Groove is LaGrange. Outstanding Again
Oooft that Gadd shuffle hit me just right 💪
This is such a fantastic explanation. You’re going to help so many drummers become drummers.
Your teaching style, separating the individual parts ,has helped me immensely in maintaining the independence to learn these must have grooves. Thank you so much.
The hi-hat shuffle 😂 How have I never seen or heard this 😂
That was nasty control on Jeff's groove. Respect!
christschinwon
They all got this groove from
Bernard Purdie....
It’s Called The Purdie Shuffle...
Google Jeff.....he says it himself..
That was extremely clear and super helpful. That was a bunch of lessons wrapped up in one session
B R A V O !!! The best most cohesive shuffle explanation I have seen, EXCELLENT. Thank you so much for the video, Very informative.
I absolutely love these grooves. Would really appreciate having them in written notation.
I'm a bad student. Instead of focusing on your instructions, I was mesmerized by that A&F 'er
Don't feel bad, man. That's to be expected 🙂🥁
Thanks a lot!! Very well selected shuffle grooves, with great way of showing how to play. Master class.🥁✨
EXCELLENT VIDEO !!! I have come back to this one MORE than once Rob !!!
I play by feel already. I actually did a blues jam on Wednesday. I didn’t know any of the songs we played, but I did rather well.
I find that to be true of every blues jam I go to.
People are always going to be 'arm chair quarter backs, or back seat drivers' most arent even in a p;laying situation because they cant get along w anybody. i say thank you for putting a tag [ name on each of these essential grooves [ or beats if you like]. okiejack nashville tn.
Hey Jack so glad to see your interest in this video , I too was envied to indelve in this video.
Best breakdowns brought to you by Beatdown.. No words needed.. Awesome!
That’s a very nice instruction video. Love the way you broke that down. Great job
Hey Rob, Thank you for this lesson. I’m gonna sink my teeth into the shuffles as soon as i mastered the triplet groove that you posted. Also I wanted to ask, do you have a list of the gear you are using in your videos?
I could never play a shuffle beat to save my life. Had no interest in it. However, all those beats you played, were in all the music I've ever listened to. As I've stated in the past, where were you in the 1960's when I needed you! LOL! Great videos and you are an excellent teacher...
Marvelous! The best lesson on shuffles out there, for me at least, or for my understanding the grooves.
Excellent rob. This is one great way to study the great shuffles from the greats - bernatd, pocato, bohnam and gadd....ooooof 👍👌
