Dr. Beatdown is one of the best instructors in the internet today! I see he has taken Many tips from Chapin and breaks it up into pieces for us to understand and apply. This man is the new age instructor for the world! He deserves a better following!
If there was a RUclips Award show you would win the Best Drum Channel category...without question. Thank you for taking the time to do these videos for us.
I started drum lessons at 15. Now 58 years old and still playing. I had an incredibly talented and technically proficient drummer as my first teacher, and he was a hell of a nice person. He was also the worst drum teacher Ive ever come across! I wish he'd been as relaxed and inspiring as you are. My wish is that every drummer, regardless of age or ability, finds their way to your pages. You represent the very best attributes of your craft. My thanks for sharing your knowledge, enthusiasm and wisdom with us all.
yeah, this dude has the most important quality teachers can have....patience. and he keeps things slow and easy to learn. i have been banging away for years and these tips are very helpful and eye opening, great job bud!
Not only for guys :-) I'm having a really tough time trying to figure out fills. I always panic for some reason and begin to rush and make a mess of it all and lose count. And this is the absolute best video I've ever seen. Tomorrow I will start with practicing these fills. I learn pretty quick so I should be well on my way.
Hi Rob, Thank you..well I think you are the one that is going to take help me take my playing to another level. I will give you an update next week.😊 May I send you one of my videos?
@@RobBeatdownBrown Hey, another chic drummer here...and she could have written exactly what I was about to! I actually stopped the video after your 1st pattern to leave a message about how awesome it is so far. I haven't even watched the whole video yet but I am already impressed. I had lessons when I was 12 ish, now 48 and getting back to them seriously now 😃
As a 63 year old semi beginner (started at 60) I really get a lot from your videos. I will work on the "developing your weaker hand" techniques and these fill stickings. Thanks from Bellingham WA!
Watching your videos truly helps me understand exactly what ive been doing for 45 years....So glad ive been able to find a teacher like you...You get it...mostly i GET YOU! GIDDY UP! 😎
Wow. I’ve watched a lot of people trying to teach drums on RUclips, but none of their methods are as effective and easy to follow as this guy’s. Thanks Rob.
I've been playing since I was ten years old and I'm in my 30's now...I moved to another state and hadn't played in almost 10yrs. I had gotten a bit rusty. These fills and the other vids you posted have really help me to get back in my groove now thatI'm back playing again! Thank you for actually TEACHING!
Wow, what a fantastic lesson. If you give a man a fish, you feed him for a day. If you teach a man to fish, you feed him for a lifetime! I got so much more out of this video than countless other "beginner fill" videos because you're teaching me how to come up with new fills on the fly from the ground up, and you showed me how to practice them effectively on a loop. I'm practicing all 5 patterns with a metronome on the up-beat. I will never freeze up when it's fill time, ever again (hopefully)! Thank you Rob
Ray Zins he’s sharp. It really makes me realize that all I ever had going for me was smooth delivery and very steady rhythm. Was born with it. I don’t know anything about technique or terminology. I have talent that I have never been able to harness. I still love to play.
OMG! YOU have given the best guidance to drum ZEN! It feels incredible when I use the fills. LRRL RLRL. The last one in this video. You in one video, taught me the next level. I've been playing and trying to learn since 2015. And have been stuck, but kept trying. You gave me the cool confidence that was not not present. I was thinking of quitting. Total new level reached, What a great feeling !!!! Thank you!
Best teacher that I never even met! your drumming took me into the 6/8 & triplet realm a year ago without feeling like an idiot. what a gem this your content is.
I'm a grandfather who loved drums as a child but wasn't in the budget then, but now my grandson at age 2 has an incredible passion for drums and drum sticks. I think this video is great for teaching bi-generational students, thanks!
Outstanding stuff, Rob. You are making better drumming more accessible for the large group of “just OK” drummers! All this stuff is clear & doable. The importance of the foundation of sticking vs the color & texture of the voicing is so fundamental - thanks for pointing out the order of priority! Likewise, your tutorial of kick drum pedal technique (+, 0, -), was clear and easy to grasp& practice. Many thanks!
Just getting over my 3rd shoulder surgery in 4 years. Been drumming 40 years and I feel like I'm starting over(almost). This is a great lesson for competetive grooving. Doing these fill for just an hour and i feel way smoother and in control. Thanks for all your vids bro. You are appriciated.
As a fairly new drummer looking for good instructional videos, I can now say I found my "go to" guy!!! I learned more than just a few drum fills today and I'm feeling rather excited about it - SUBSCRIBED! Thanks, Rob.
I'm a self-taught hack drummer for sure--have played in many cover bands and at my Church here in Point Loma--and felt just nowhere-- looked up drum lessons youtube--you're awesome--keep teaching!
Been playing bass for about a year. My ADHD really keeps me from reaching my full potential on the bass, although getting good, I had to take up drums so I can push myself to stay in my studio. About 3 months ago I bought a used drum kit and decided to watch a few of your tutorials and a few on using double kick pedals and I swear I've been playing 4-6 hours a day during the week and weekends I'm in my studio 14-16 hours unless I have something goin on... everyone thinks I'm lying when I say I've been playing 3 months if that! Thanks man your video shows are all most people would need to actually become a drummer. Cant say I didn't have experience with beats because I'm also a DJ/engineer so I'm fluent with beats and counts and timing/measures and etc but I just wanted to give you some love back! Keep it up!
I never had a drumming teacher. I learned to play without the proper techniques. What I just watched gave great insight in what I am missing. Very encouraging and informative.
I don't know if you will see this comment, but I just saw this video for the first time, as I only recently found your channel. I am learning so much from you. I am about to turn 65 and I've only been playing for a little over a year. I've never had lessons, I just learn basic beats of classic rock songs and do the best I can. I am only now learning about the importance of sticking and I think it is going to bring me to the next level. I got my Groove Responsibly T-shirt yesterday and wore it to band practice last night. :)
Self taught drummer here. I’ve always been good on a groove, but my sticking is horrible when it comes to fills. This video was super helpful. Not only for fills, but for motifs for solos as well. Thanks Rob. You’re the man!
Love em all! Simple yet versatile and creative. Will be trying all of them, especially number 4 as I normally tend to avoid any stickings that leave me with left hand on Beat 1 but it is interesting enough to help me work on this! Thanks Rob!!
I am a left-handed,but play as a right handet...I'm pretty I play with churches and groups but I'm not professional with it.but this video just made me really realize that the sticking does make a difference..I developed a right handed way of playing over the years so I have that same sound but either I'm single stroking it or double bounce it..but it sounds jus like this video..I never really practiced left handed playing..but this video showed me a technique to playing..now my right leg needs lotsa practice I can't get the fill using the foot pedal..but..it sounds the same with what I do..u can bounce or slide my foot on the pedal but I can't control it to play a fill with it...I thought bout trying a double pedal for awhile but haven't yet..but again this video showed me something to practice
Dude, awesome video again, I hate rudiments normally, not only did you put the accents clearly on the dark/light areas, you straight away put them into their usefulness within a grove... can’t wait for my practice day! 😂 (I’m a twin dad/NHS healthcare prof in UK, so drumming time is in super short supply). Thanks man, Ben
THANKS! First thing I did was message my cousin and told him, "Hey, I saw the title of this drumming video and the first person that came to mind was YOU! " I wanted to be there support his endeavor. 😬
Hey man, I really like not only your style, but also your easy to understand instructions! I am 64 years old and have always wished I could play drums. I have two young boys ages 3 and 6. And I would really love them (or at least one of them) to follow and learn from you. Your instructions are not only slow and basic, but also explained very easy to understand! Thanks man!
Rob man once again you read my mind. I use these all just jamming, it's when I start the think about my next few phrases I get caught up. Practicing the actual sticking mechanics I think will free my mind... Instinctively selecting one depending on the next phrasing..... And Plus 1 for the far right side crash.. I stumbled into the need as I do a good bit of floor tom work naturally. Having a crash and a splash far right allowed me more flexibility in connecting to new Phrases, as well as that reset to the snare is less manic..... If you do a clinic in the Washington dc metro area, or Atlanta Georgia area after this fall I'm in the front row.. Jah Bless
I've been playing my whole life but am self-taught and missed out on a lot of the fundamentals. This is SO helpful and I'm already seeing changes in my playing. Thanks so much!
I love your style , so far you are the best online teacher I have come across and glad I did. You make it look so easy. I really appreciate the exploratory style. Thank you.
I love that you provide more than an adequate amount of time on each fill to give the viewer enough time to catch on. Thanks dude I really learn a lot from your vids.
Thanks rob you are a great drummer and a great teacher. I will probably be stuck at beginner intermediate for the rest of my life, but much of what I pick up is from you. I'm am thrilled that I get to play some every day no matter where it goes. Every video of yours I watch gets me back @ the kit .many thanks.
You are my drum teacher from day one bro and you're always coming through with great instruction. I'll try and work #1 in tomorrow when I'm up behind the glass.
Hey this is huge. As a new drummer, I've been trying to learn many different charted fills and have struggled to memorize them. I'm amazed how different these each sound by just changing the sticking on a common fill. Then spreading the fills across the kit opens up a whole new repertoire again. This is transformational yet easy to learn. Thanks!
Ok. I subscribed and I’m not even a drummer., but the way you teach, makes me think I could. Does that make sense? Anyway, love your channel, keep up the good work. You are doing a wonderful and important service for anyone that wants to learn. Cheers
I've been playing drums for 40 years and I'm still learning. you are a wonderful teacher. Thank you for your hard work and these wonderful videos. I do appreciate it I'm sure everybody here watching those too.
True, but when need a carpenter to get a job done you don't care that there are master sculptors and designers put there. A carpenter will do the trick.
I drum mostly for my own recordings and until recently, I’d never really taken it very seriously. (I didn’t even understand why drummers learned rudiments.) Your approach is so organized and you evidently know how to “speak” to the so-so drummer. So glad I found your channel.
Just discovered this guy today. I’ve watched only two of his videos and he has answered so many questions I’ve had that no other instruction videos could! This is my main man going forward! Love his personality too!
I just started drumming and went on RUclips to learn some basics. A lot of the people on youtube are kind of pretentious and seem to talk down to you. I love your videos. I keep coming back and you seem to sincerely enjoy helping us beginners!
You are amazing man. I just bought a $25 drum kit and within 15 mins I can play basic. You are the man . Soooooooo much in love with you and your personality . Keep up the good job mate
Please definitely more videos for OK players. I learned to play in church and I learned by ear. First time I’m actually watching a lesson. And this lessons are just so easy to follow. And yes I’ll be getting my t-shirt. Thanks and please keep it going man.
I've beem working on my left hand ability all week, then came across this fill video - great stuff! I will be working on fill #1. I just like the sound of it. Also, what I really appreciate about this material is that it is professional level instruction that is not played at 1000 BPM! Some professionals present great fills, beats, etc. on RUclips, but they are played as examples that are way too fast. Every good drummer should know that the best technique has to be learned slow before its brought up to speed. Rob -bless you for your excellent instruction. It helps me keep my chops up and is really improving my playing! Keep up the good work.
AWESOME! So simple! I've been watching videos that would make sticking easier for me.....and you've done it! Great teaching! We need more drum teachers/instructor that can teach like this. Keep bangin'!
All of them!!! I played drums as a kid, never had a lesson though - you have no idea how helpful this video is for folks like me!! Finally dusting off my kit (it’s been 16+ years!) and just ordered my L80’s and RTOM black holes so I can play after the kid goes to bed... SUBSCRIBED.
At seventy, I just started playing drums. I bought a kit and can't begin to tell you how I enjoy your lessons. You are a teacher Mr. Brown. Thanks so much. Peace, Just Sam
My dude, your vids are amazing. I'm a guitar player fed up with corona boredom and just got a Roland td1-dmk and these videos are the bomb. Keep it up!
As a beginning drummer I'm trying to learn to keep a beat with some style. Your teaching technique starting with the easiest and going forward works for me. Thank you
I started drumming years ago life kept getting in the way. I'm still a beginner but simply enjoy drumming for my head. Only now I have a two boys that like playing instruments. I have seen this fellow before I'm glad he is still one here teaching. You want your kids learning from someone good. ;- )
Hey Mr. Ropb Brown. So Beautifully explained to pick up each of the Fills. Will practice all and pick up . Thank you for the lesson. Would love to stay in touch as I progress with my drumming skills. Hope its not too late in life. I am 58.
3 and 5 for sure but going to work on them all, lovin all the content you out out haven't played since high school, now a friend has gotten to get into his band, after 15 years without playing, I'm learning things from you I never knew or ever thought of, thanks for all your help
as a 61 yr old 'drum owner' (really a guitar player), THANK YOU, i will practice all of these so i can impress anyone who will listen till they confiscate the kit. You're a great teacher, what a cool lesson for me, and how can a 'less than OK drummer' learn how to double stroke the kick drum? best to you!!
You are an awesome teacher! Been playin' drums for about 6 weeks now (since NY quarantine) and just lovin' it....never knew at 42 I'd develop a passion and a fueling desire to learn to play. I am going to get on the kit with the first one! Thanks!!
TOP
Great job Rob, I've been playing for over 50 years, always looking for something different, kind of a spin on a paradiddle and I like it, glad I ran across your video , very nicely put together, most videos have too much talking and not enough playing, but not yours,Thank You
Hi Rob You are a great drummer and teacher , I have never thought about that , in Drum fills , sticking is more important and always comes first. Thank you for your explanation of drum fills. Please do more videos for us.
This is excellent. He’s not showing off, he’s actually teaching.
Sheri Luévano don’t you mean ‘beats things down’? 😂🤣Oh my sides, but yes he’s a fantastic teacher.

Good for u sir! Keep at it
Best drum teacher on the internet. Period. Just my opinion. Thank you for these videos.

Judging by the meters on the mixer, are you only running overhead mics & a snare mic? Quality is pretty on point man
You're actually a very good teacher don't stop doing what you're doing some people are honestly meant to teach
This will make my drum students "feel good" about themselves 🙆

Bro I’m a just ok drummer. Normal people tell me I’m good and I’m like if you were a drummer you’d know I’m not shit lmaoooo.
RIGHT?! It's like, thanks but....
Advanced players... U have my permission to leave the room"
And I cried
all will help me Thank YOU for your time
Just discovered this guy today. I’ve watched only two of his videos and he has answered so many questions I’ve had that no other instruction videos could!
This is my main man going forward!
Love his personality too!
Too good Boos. I am 58 years old but have unfulfilled passion for drumming. will certainly follow the advice to learn the fills.Thank you very much.
I just started drumming and went on RUclips to learn some basics. A lot of the people on youtube are kind of pretentious and seem to talk down to you. I love your videos. I keep coming back and you seem to sincerely enjoy helping us beginners!
I was a beginner once too, man 👊🏽🤓
You are amazing man.
Great video. I love how he has the focus on the basis to build upon. Like he said, being able to do these fast will make it look really good.
From all the channels about drum, you are the best teacher 🙏 thank u Mr Brown
You just earned a subscriber! 30 years of practicing paradiddles and ruffs are going to pay off. Excellent video.
A very honest and practical approach to lessons. Makes me want to shed right now.
Just begging and I love your lessons. Easy for me to follow and understand. Appreciate you.
Yes Sir...thanks for these musical pearls...Gods continued Blessing on your ministry
You want your kids learning from someone good. ;- )
I'm a raw beginner, this is sick! You're a great teacher, easy to follow I love your style . Cheers.
Hey Mr. Ropb Brown. So Beautifully explained to pick up each of the Fills. Will practice all and pick up . Thank you for the lesson. Would love to stay in touch as I progress with my drumming skills. Hope its not too late in life. I am 58.
After seeing this video, I now see this fill all over the place! Thank you
3 and 5 for sure but going to work on them all, lovin all the content you out out haven't played since high school, now a friend has gotten to get into his band, after 15 years without playing, I'm learning things from you I never knew or ever thought of, thanks for all your help
as a 61 yr old 'drum owner' (really a guitar player), THANK YOU, i will practice all of these so i can impress anyone who will listen till they confiscate the kit.
Thanks!!
Thank you I really need to work on my sticking ty beatdown brown
Thanks!
