Just started to pick up drumming and I’ve been completely bypassing drumeo in favor of your videos. The way you explain things makes so much sense! Thanks for the help you’re amazing
Drumeo might be the "Holy Grail", but as a beginning drummer (at 48!) I find a lot of their videos teach basic concepts without sufficient explanation, or they make advanced techniques look deceptively simple, again without sufficient explanation. Case in point, this topic which Mr. Brown spent 10-minutes presenting with an in-depth explanation would be a two-minute video on Drumeo. Of course the whole point of Drumeo's channel is not to actually teach drums but to push to you to their subscription website where you will presumably get the more complete lessons.
Rob: once again your videos are very helpful and practical. When I went to the US Marine Corps Drum & Bugle Corps School after Bootcamp, they taught us to NOT to Practice the Double-stroke roll with the usual RR LL RR LL Sticking. Instead, we were taught to practice with this sticking; RL--LR--RL--LR starting at a Full Stroke (Hi) Stick Height. We were told that this sticking Totally eliminates ANY Bounced Roll, and also eliminates the tendency to play the Long Roll with a Louder First stroke, followed by a softer or weaker Second Stroke as in Rr Ll Rr Ll.
Ive been playing since I was 14 years old. I still don't have a well developed double stroke. If your video helps me im coming to visit and buying you dinner!!!!
Hey bro, I've been watching your vids for a while now and must say, you're the best. I started drums about 3 yrs ago and have watched many vids and have had 2 teachers. I've picked up more from you than any others. The way you explain things in all its' detail is amazing and so much easier to follow than any other method i've used. Kudos, bro, and keep up the good work.
Rob, pound for pound, I think this is one of the best lessons the internet has to offer. I’ve always thought my doubles were really good, and I was just watching because, we’ll, it’s you, but I realized I was doing exactly what you said players do. Guilty as charged! Keep up the awesome work!
Amen brother! First minute is straight dope. Singles, doubles, single paradiddle are all you need for a career. Until you want to get some. I dig confidence.
Best drum teacher in the world.. I'm teaching myself, every time I come to this site with a problem. Rob explains it best. Thanks man, really appreciated!
I play drums when I was younger I haven’t played in like 20 years and I just got another set I’m trying to get back my the grip So I can roll better and be triplets and such I would like to learn some syncopated Chad stuff because I don’t like to play covers exactly the way that played I like to add my own little thing to him and I was wondering if you ever do that lately I’ve been playing to your drumeo drumless tracks I they’re going to be a great tool for me to practice to. But honestly I should try to get back to the basics I really love the show and the information you guys provide I think you covered all the bases when you explain what you’re doing and how it’s done So keep up the good work and I’ll be watching show me some good stuff this year everything you do is good thanks Robert
Excellent, Rob. I wanted to tell you that what has helped my doubles immensely harkens back to the 20 minute double stroke workout you posted a while back. But what I did instead was start with a SINGLE stroke on the downbeat. So what you have is: LRRL LRRL LRRL LRRL etc. (or RLLR RLLR RLLR RLLR etc.). Man, I did THAT for twenty minutes with the click, nice and even. I guess it's sort of based on something I probably saw in the "Accents and Rebounds" book some years ago, but it has definitely helped me. Thanks for all your great, inspiring videos.
Rob brown....you have hit the nail on the head...always had trouble with double strokes.....thank you for the exercise...will let you know on my progress.....
Hey Rob, I started on drums over 20 years ago & learnt by ear as best as i could.. never had a lesson or knew other drummers (lived in a remote area of Australia) .... I never knew what rudiments etc. even were - but always wanted to improve my playing. So your videos are amazing to me! I really enjoy your approach, style and have a sense of connection watching you. It inspired me to get a new kit & also use my electro kit for practice. I feel like I've improved even before I try your exercises! So thanks again, just wanted to show my appreciation. Look fwd to yr Next video! Thx mate.
Like you, I'm a self-taught (and Aussie) drummer who's played for a long time but never really practiced rudiments. Since all my gigs are cancelled I'm determined to use the Rona quarantine to finally practice some basic rudiments. I can feel, see and hear the difference after a week.
Your a wonderful teacher, thank you for sharing the information that you have had to dig out over the years with hit and misses and now your being generous to us so we don’t have to work as hard as you did as much .I use to work for greyhound corporation and their was this mechanic there an old timer who had lots of information but he wasn’t willing to share with anyone... I think that’s why I appreciate your kindness so much...
Thats how im learning, and trying to get my blast beats tighter, totally agree with this,. Im a truck driver, so when stuck in traffic, or on a longer journey, theres enough room near my gear stick, to be able to practice , using this technique, with the left arm and a stick, on the side of the trucks dash, feels the same as a practice pad. just getting the bounce even as i can, and for me , as fast as i can has made such a difference. Also, its a thing for the double kicks too, the second bounce on the kick when doing doubles/heel toe, also has to be the equal as the first, unless doing awesome things using the heel toe mixed with singles.,
I worked on my doubles at least 10 minutes everyday. My drums instructor was also really encouraging me to practice them too. I used to play at 90, now I play at 120 without hiccups. They still don't sound even, but I'm trying to get there.
@@persianskeptic4814 bruh don't worry about the accents in the begging the grip used for buzz rolling is literally the same for double stroke but instead of pushing the stick into the drum to create a buzz have a lighter hold allowing a rebound you double the stroke
No longer Mr. Brown. You are a great teacher! You are a Dr. in my Book. You are Dr. Brown. Great exercise especially to train that weak wrist and hand along with placing your fingers. Thank You!
*Here's what helped me with my doubles* - I've recorded the audio with my phone, I've put it into Audacity and played it in slo-mo. I was amazed to see that my weak hand (i.e. right, I'm left-handed) was really solid (two almost equal strokes, played in time), but my strong hand was garbage - first hit was overpowered and the second was barely audible, as I wasn't using the small finger. Thanks for the videos, Rob, they helped me a lot with improving my technique. MAKE SURE TO USE THAT PINKY, GUYS!
Saiker--keeping the pinky on the stick only keeps you from getting tension. It has no impact on your playing at all. Buddy Rich never used it and Steve Gadd doesn't use it. What your problem is, Saiker, is that you are not breaking your wrist enough. You play THROUGH the drum, breaking your wrist slightly past what it takes to make contact with the drum, and work with the rebound. Practice playing through the drum, using ONLY your middle and ring fingers, without using your thumb. What you are doing now is playing TO the drum, and not allowing a follow-through to allow an even secondary tap. Play THROUGH the drum, as if the head is really 3" lower than it is. Trust me, I have done the finger snapping YEARS AND YEARS AGO. You don't snap your fingers AT ALL when you play a double stroke roll at tempo. It simply doesn't work that way.
@@tootallforbaseball thanks for replying. I need to try that on the pad. However, I'm not sure if I got you correctly - are you saying that what Rob and other guys are teaching, the whole "throw and snap" thing, is wrong?
Saiker I have a video on RUclips as well. Search for double stroke roll in depth. I explain my concept. All of those guys play the way I describe. I used to do that very same thing 40 years ago as Rob and others, but in the end, what you end up doing is just breaking your wrist more. Snapping the fingers is not the best use of your time. Watch my video and I demonstrate the most effective method.
My first video of yours but it won't be my last. I started dreaming when I was in my early twenties had to quit due to diabetic neuropathy took up guitar but now in my early forties 20 years later. I miss it more and more so I decided to go back to it . So these little tips are huge!!! I had just started learning rudiments so this is helpful and if you have any more thoughts or classes on rudiments or anything else would be greatly appreciated.
Thank you, thank you, thank you!!! I am 55 and have been learning to play the drums since May '23. My drum teacher is currently on his summer holidays and I've been given 'homework' to do while he is away. One part is to work on getting my bpm up for my doubles. I've given this a go and it's already helping. I am thrilled!! I will now binge watch all of your videos. Amazing explanations, thank you 😁😁
I just started drum lessons today and I'm getting super excited about learning a new instrument! Finding your channel will help me immensely thank you so much!!
Back in the 60s we read magazines instead of looking at youtube videos and I can recall reading maybe in Downbeat Magazine a drummer comment on the lovely double stroke roll another drummer (that other drummer could have been Joe Morello because Brubeck's "Take Five" helped introduce Joe as a big shot drummer and Morello had a wonderful roll). He commented that he supposed the other drummer was accenting the second beat just a little more. As for me, I was having difficulty "crushing" the roll. I found playing in 3 helped me crush it. Then I went on to the crush roll in 2. I could have used your videos back in the 60s, but then, that was before you were born! Keep up the good work.
Rob you’re amazing, observing that a lot of drummers flare out their pinkie finger when attempting doubles is great. I see beginners to pro drummers doing this. Love it.
Oh man your so easy to follow along with. I'm a total newbie. JUST got my practice pad. Yours is the first video I found with the "traditional grip" and it's the first time I actually got a smooth rhythm. (my left hand seem to be somewhat challenged.) lol.
Thank you, kindly squire. I also tried using my index or middle finger to hold the stick and to my delight it’s upgraded my speed. Splendid new idea, my dear fellow. Regards from an Irish git in Hungary.
Amazing channel. Yet another advice that helps, this time it took less than a day to feel a difference in my playing. Thank you, thank you so much, my man.
Excellent video, man. Excellent. Crystal clear, laid back, easy to absorb/comprehend information. Love how you lay this down, in words and examples. Thanks for helping us all execute this double stroke clean up.
Break through moment! for me! Thank you so much for explaining this. All my life trying to get a rebound second bounce instead of emphasis on the second hit! I can't thank you enough for explaining this so I completely understood how to get out of this rut I've been stuck in for years! Bless you !!!
As a marching drummer, I can’t tell if Rob also has marching experience based on his hands but there’s a lot of similarities between the way I used to hear things during my career and the way Rob says a lot of things on video. Makes it easy for someone like me to start bridging the gap into a whole new style. Love and appreciate the middle finger fulcrum comment, I generally didn’t start hearing that until after high school and it’s a game changer, especially for double strokes. At the beginning of the video I was thinking to myself “If he says his exercise for this is double beat I stg” 😂
Lots of similarities. Middle finger fulcrum is also great for power playing, easier on the hands. Not great for playing super fast though cuz finger control is lacking. It's good to know both fulcrums.
thanks for helping inspire an old head to get his chops back... Your videos somehow take me back 35+yrs. I remember showing an uncle how the band instructor had us grip'n sticks.. He laughed and gave me the middle finger walked away.. First I thought about putting xlax in his food. Then It hit me!!
I'm just learning drums and couldn't understand why my initial hit always sounds louder than the bounce hit. All tutorial Vids up to now have just shown people playing it where it all sounds smooth and I couldn't understand what I was doing wrong. Glad to see a video that not only let's me know that it must be a common issue so I'm not on my own, but also explains why it's happening and what to do to rectify it. Thanks a million. I'll go and practice what you have shown us and I'll see you in 3 months 😆😂 hopefully I'll be able to report I have improved 😁
Rob Man, you are one cool cat. Thanks for the tips. I've been a hack for a while but think your tips will help both me and my daughter. Good luck with everything Mr. Brown.
Thanks for the tip, I've never been real good with my doubles but now I'll do like you said and practice in front of the TV or with the stereo on. Thanks for sharing.
Great tutorial! Thanks! I played rudimental style back in the day so I'm pretty comfortable with double beats but I've been looking for a good tutorial for friends who are still working on it. Thanks for breaking it down into matched and traditional, too.
If there is just one drumming you need to watch, this is it. Great video, I like the bit where you show how the stick is held and the finger action...I've just moved to trying the middle finger fulcrum and your relaxed style keeping the arms down, seems to be something in it. I still have a long way to go, so thanks a bunch for your videos.
THANK you very much. That was extremely helpful. I didn't realize how raggedy my double strokes were until how this video. Because of you, my double strokes are much improved. And getting better. Again, thank you and keep type of excerise coming.
Been playing drums since 2000 but I didn’t learn any rudiments till this past year. My singles and paraded does are strong but was struggling with the doubles. This is a great video. Thanks for the help !!!
Bro! Thanks for this i am following to a tee and so far I have a few days in and can hear a difference. Can only imagine in 3 months how much faster I will get!
Thanks a lot Mr Brown for those very effective explainations and teaching... middle finger and traditional left thumb jazz grip... best for practissing...but not in front of tv!
dude, WTF! i'm 64, been playing drums on and off for 30 years and i've never really nailed doubles until now. that simple trick of putting the accent on the second hit changed everything, now i'm getting much smoother consistent rolls. i'm not perfect yet but i definitely feel i've broke through the wall. thank you so much.
Well.... it's been over a a year (I scrolled down to find my original comment) and I have to say that this is the single best lesson I've ever seen for developing technique.. I have been doing variants of this drill pretty consistently since initially viewing this video. Especially the idea of keeping that pinky involved. Truth. It's helped me realize (IMO) that true touch and feel, the "business" of making all different drum strokes takes place in those last couple of fingers, not in the fulcrum at the front. I found it helpful to work with a metronome (slowly for the most part) and do the second tap "on" the metronome. RLLR RLLR RLLR RLLR , etc then switch to left hand leading .. Setting the metronome to 7/4 will let you switch that accent from the RH to the LH without changing the overall pattern (I hope that's clear.. try it) Also, I have to take a second to say that most unexpectedly when using brushes, I found that a double stroke (and 6 stroke roll) just magically appeared out of nowhere... all thanks to the pinky. Great stuff as always, Mr. Brown.
i just started playing drums 2 days ago and i was watching like "exercises for beginners" and i just couldn't keep up, my doubles sucked, and i searched "how to get better at doubles" and your video popped up, immediately i got it, you explain and show it perfectly, this really boosted my confidence and motivated me to practice! i hope i make it into a band one day 😖💘💘💘
FINALLY INSTURCTION ON WHATS HAPPENING WITH THE FINGERS. BEEN PLATING FOR EVER AND WATCHING MANY VIDEOS AND NO 1 EVER SHOWS THE TECHNIQUE TO HOLDING THE STICKS FOR DOUBLES. THANK YOU LAWD FOR THIS BRA DA. YES! 🙌
Nice! Great stuff and spot on! I almost never subscribe to any channels...they have to be worth it and this one is absolutely worth it. Playing for 25+ years and there are things I'm learning here. Self-taught player, by ear which is why this site helps so much! Never stop learning and always open your mind, especially when playing and/or learning music!
OMG, how the hell did no one ever show me this technique before? I've had this exact problem for a long time, with those uneven doubles. This will help a lot! Thank you sir!
Cool. Normally I play the guitar, but from time to time I love to do some (totally amateurish) drumming. Difficult to find good tutorial videos on drumming. This one stands out.
Thank you for posting this great video. I've been playing drums, for 30 years and learned so much from this. Stay safe. I'm isolating in may 20/20. Getting back to basics:)
Interesting approach with the first exercise...I've seen a similar approach where you accent the second stroke with each hand, but it was much more emphasized. Almost as if you are a robot if that makes sense. I appreciate your suggested way of doing it, seems more natural. There's a video clip of Jim Chapin talking about the moeller technique and how your grip changes when doing single strokes as you go faster. With your first example, I now see a similar thing now applied to double strokes. Good stuff and thanks for sharing!
I am a self taught drummer...I cant believe how much progress I made over the years without having the fundamentals. I am reinventing myself from the basics up. I started practicing fundamentals everyday as if I am a baby drummer and I am having so much fun. Thanks for the video man. I appreciate it. I also just discovered heal/toe...so fun man.
Hey thanks, man. Glad the videos are helping you out 🙂👊🏽
Rob, pound for pound, I think this is one of the best lessons the internet has to offer.
If you want to get some, the triple will do it. Cheers!
Excellent! Love you entire approach to realistic usable lessons. Bravo!! Mad cool.
Thanks Rob for the tips. At 61 Picking up the sticks again and I forgot so much rudimentary stuff. I got some homework .
Finally someone who uses slow motion! That was super helpful to see the mechanics. Nice seeing you on DRUMEO as well! Beatdown FTW
Thx mate.
That’s awesome, dude. Glad the videos have been helping you out. Shout out from Canada 🇨🇦👊🏽
Rob Brown wait, please tell me your from Toronto! Would love to take lessons!
Go bills!!!!!
Also, its a thing for the double kicks too, the second bounce on the kick when doing doubles/heel toe, also has to be the equal as the first, unless doing awesome things using the heel toe mixed with singles.,
Ok Rob, I've been having trouble with my doubles. Gonna try this thing. I'm going to comment in 4 weeks and report the results
2 weeks and counting
Larks' Tongues In Aspic what now
I worked on my doubles at least 10 minutes everyday. My drums instructor was also really encouraging me to practice them too. I used to play at 90, now I play at 120 without hiccups. They still don't sound even, but I'm trying to get there.
@@persianskeptic4814 bruh don't worry about the accents in the begging the grip used for buzz rolling is literally the same for double stroke but instead of pushing the stick into the drum to create a buzz have a lighter hold allowing a rebound you double the stroke
kaneki k cmon I wish I learned that, you actually made sense. I always forced doubles cause buzz rolls are forced since it require more than 3 bounces
No longer Mr. Brown. You are a great teacher! You are a Dr. in my Book. You are Dr. Brown. Great exercise especially to train that weak wrist and hand along with placing your fingers. Thank You!
Thanks man 🙂🤘🏽
Great Scott! Doc brown haha
Great demonstration and lesson. Well done and simple explained, gotta try this exercise. Thanks Rob.
Rob, man you are the best!! I have been struggling with doubles. This just open the door and the fresh air has come in. Fantastic. Thanks.
Love it.
The pinky finger should be on the stick, but it is only to avoid tension. The pinky finger has no real impact whatsoever.
John Tootallforbaseball it looks ridulous
Oh man your so easy to follow along with. I'm a total newbie. JUST got my practice pad. Yours is the first video I found with the "traditional grip" and it's the first time I actually got a smooth rhythm. (my left hand seem to be somewhat challenged.) lol.
great, thorough explanation...
THANKS FOR GIVING YOUR TIME TO TEACH OTHERS...
Rob, I got me a pretty nice DW drum set and a Black Beauty snare and your my teacher . Love the way you express your talent , Thank You!
This is fantastic! I'm forwarding this on to some of my students. Thanks, Rob! You have explained it perfectly!
Much appreciated, man. Thanks a bunch for sharing it 🙂👊🏽
I'm just learning drums and couldn't understand why my initial hit always sounds louder than the bounce hit.
Great !!
I want to see the video of double and triple Para-diddle, which are essential for drum strokes.
.
Great tip!!
I first learnt accenting the 2nd beat on Dave Weckl's first video!!
Really improved my double strokes!!
I've been learning from you for a few years now. Great technique. Really appreciated! Thanks.
Well.... it's been over a a year (I scrolled down to find my original comment) and I have to say that this is the single best lesson I've ever seen for developing technique.. Brown.
This deserves waaay more views. One of the best lessons on double stroke out there.
i just started playing drums 2 days ago and i was watching like "exercises for beginners" and i just couldn't keep up, my doubles sucked, and i searched "how to get better at doubles" and your video popped up, immediately i got it, you explain and show it perfectly, this really boosted my confidence and motivated me to practice! i hope i make it into a band one day 😖💘💘💘
Great lesson that helped me clean up my doubles. Thanks, Ron!
I never subscribe to anyone but ive been trying to fix my doubles for years and this video his helping me a lot. So you’ve earned it.
Thank you for posting this great video.
I've been playing drums, for 30 years and learned so much from this.
Stay safe. I'm isolating in may 20/20.
Getting back to basics:)
Thanks for putting this together, nicely done.
Rob is the man. Highly recommend his drum tuning vid. Changed my world.
Really good explanation of the double stroke. Thanks.
I feel like I am 16 again. God bless you/yours.
Thank you again these videos really help a lot.
Thank you so much ! The way you just described everything was the best I have ever heard . You completely understand the difficulties and are able to communicate it amazingly!
Thank you for this - I like your teaching style and the way you clearly explain the mechanics.
Thank You. I will really practice this good exercise. Thank You…
Rob, you are a terrific teacher. I wish I could meet with you in person once a week.
I wanted to thank you your videos are absolutely the best on youtube .i love the way you break everything down when you explain how to do something .thanks sean
Thanks a lot, man. Glad you’re gettin’ it 👊🏽🙂
Im on my week one of the prescription and i can allready see reasult !! Thank you soooo much doctor !!
Just wanted to pop in and say this exercise totally works. I thought I could doubles until my drum teacher laughed at my pathetic attempt at it. I spent two weeks doing this exercise for 30min a day and it completely fixed my horrible double stroke roll. Thanks, Rob!
Very nice, thanks for the clear video. And what a gorgeous kit you have!
I really enjoyed this video, you explained thoroughly without being condescending, excellent teaching skill!
Awesome. TY, this is working out muscles that werent worked out before. Seem so simple but so effective
very pedagogic way to understand real drumming rudiments ..as simple as that ...then after that i'll try your excellent schuffle lessons i saw days ago thanx for your work ...hats off ...:-)
Great Video My Brother. Control Each Bounce Speed Will Develope. The Beauty Of Playing Any Rudiment, Or A Drum Pattern Is To Play It Slow So You Can Feel It. Once Again Great Video.
Awesome lesson Thank you, Love your lessons So far. You really help me understand and make it click in my head how to practice and play the drums love it
"Are you havin trouble with yo doubles!?" Subbed.
Haha! Thanks, man 🙂👊🏽
Rob Brown no, thank you Rob. Lol. My dbls need work. I never put time into them.
been playing since 89 but this is the best instruction video I've seen. Great job from South Africa
Beautifully explained. Clear, concise and I'm guessing very effective. Time will tell but I like my chances. I'd say more but I gotta go practice this.
Doctor, Doctor!! I'm cured!! I have been doing variants of this drill pretty consistently since initially viewing this video 10 months ago and this drill more than any other thing I've done has helped my technique. Keep that pinky involved, too. Truth. I found it helpful to work with a metronome (slowly for the most part) and do the second tap "on" the metronome. RLLR RLLR RLLR RLLR , etc then switch to left hand leading .. Also, I have to take a second to say that most unexpectedly when using brushes, I found that a double stroke just magically appeared out of nowhere... thanks to the pinky. Great stuff, Mr. Brown.
"Take two of these, twice a day, and call me in three months." One of the best RUclips lines ever. :OD And a super-nice guy, too. Thanks for the video.
Great lesson .. can I recommend Bass drum exercise for next video ? 😃
