The fastest way to get faster on drums:
►Drumeo.com/faster/
Drumming can basically be broken down into two things: singles and doubles. Most things we play are just a combination of these. Like a golfer working on their swing, a drummer needs to be working on perfecting these two strokes since they apply to almost everything.
Note spacing and consistency are your tickets to reaching the next level in your playing. If your double strokes are threatening to-well-give you a stroke, here are five ways to stave off the sloppiness. And they really work!
0:00 Introduction
1:46 Accent the second stroke
A concept taught by pros like Dave Weckl and Thomas Lang, practice accenting the second stroke of each double. Use your full wrist motion to get each one clean and powerful, and get comfortable with how this sounds and feels. Start slow and focus on that accent - it’ll naturally start to even out as you speed up.
3:16 Practice with locked grip
Since it has little to no rebound, practicing on a pillow (or the soft arm of a couch) is an incredible training exercise. Hold your sticks so the end in the palm of each hand (without gripping too tightly). The stick should function like an extension of your arm rather than being allowed to pivot. Now every stroke on the pillow is a result of your wrist movement. If you do this for five or ten minutes a day, you’re going to start noticing massive improvements.
5:26 Displace your doubles
To change the feel and orchestration around the kit, rather than playing square/regular doubles (RRLLRRLLRRLL), play inverted doubles (RLLRRLLRRLLR). Work that around the kit with the bass drum on every quarter note. Start with the right hand leading, then practice with the left. Get used to switching between square doubles and inverted doubles and see how the sound changes. It’s a more musical way to apply what you’re working on.
10:00 Use the note value tree
Practice cycling your doubles between quarter notes, 8th notes, 8th note triplets, 16the notes, 16th note triplets, and 32nd notes. Try it with the metronome at 60 BPM.
14:50 Study the roll rudiments
Whether you realize it or not, you’re always playing rudiments. If you want to unlock more possibilities in your drumming, work on the 5 stroke roll, 6 stroke roll, 7 stroke roll, 9 stroke roll, 10 stroke roll, 11 stroke roll, 13 stroke roll, 15 stroke roll, and 17 stroke roll.

@Aisake Tukia I agree
And he does this so effortlessly
Unreal to watch as always!
No
Don't we live in an amazing age where we can get great free drum lessons? Thank you so much!
inktloos I was a professional drummer for my first few years of adulthood (before life took a radical turn) and, growing up in rural Australia and poor, my only access to music was collecting old tapes to record jazz from the radio, and sitting in a hot tin shed imitating what I heard. Now that I've returned to drumming as a passionate amateur in my early 40s, the resources utterly blow my mind! A completely different world.
yes indeed thanks so much
You are so darn right...I just watched the whole thing too and thought : how nice for these guys to give you free lessons...and good lessons too.
Literally thinking the same dam thing. Can not express the appreciation for all of these drummers here and other channels. I feel like we get the how to pull a rabbit out of a hat videos for free. But most importantly the encouragement and knowledge.
I can’t get over how cool that drum set looks (and sounds)
🤘
Totally agree.
I wanna know the exact model so bad
I endorsed this kit for a couple of years. Its the Peavey radial bridge pro 1000 set, the first drumset without lugs, the tuning screws went directly in this thick wooden ring at the top and the botton of the shell. With this technique they could make the shell only 3 mm thin. Two extremly annoying facts let the kit die. First, the drummers around the mid- 90s didnt accept the look of the drums and called it car rim, toilet seat and Second, the constructor of the set, Steven Volpp and Hartley Peavey got into a big fight and ended their corporation.....I am so sad i had to give it back, it was outstanding but i didnt have the money back in 2004…
@@andreasbreitwieser1449 I remember Bobby Rock did a demo in tracy CA some years ago. He had this big beautiful colorful peavey kit.
I literally need this so bad.
Agree, I need it as well
@@gilventura6820 I know right easy to do hard to speed up
Same
@@jonathanbormann5077 yup
What's a Double Stroke ??? Just kidding.... These guys on RUclips (Jared and others) scare me Man. I'm 69 years old and just got back into playing drums (if You can call it that ), after a 50 YEAR layoff... Got a cheap drum kit for XMAS from the wife, who knew me when I played in the garage band that never left the garage... zi was making an inquiry that I MIght go to a music studio to play the drums "to get it out of my System" So She got me a Gammon Drum kit . Now I'm hooked again. It will be great for my upcoming retirement before my arthritis gets the best of me.... I play along to MY Music (CCR, Petty, Meloncamp, Zombies, Stones, Beatles, Hollies, even Linda Ronstadt [You will be surprised at how good she was], Eagles, etc... ) in the basement , trying to keep to the beat of the music without missing too many . Charlie Watts , Ringo , yeah.... That's about my pace. Can't even Touch : Baker, Moon, Copeland ( a little maybe !!!), Piert (Whoa Baby), and many many other great Drummers .... But the name of the game is to have enjoyment and fun playing . Hopefully, with more practice and Muscle Memory , I'll become better at it ... Happy Drumming all - stay well in this madness.
The editing with those Fast to Slowmo doubles was 🔥🔥 🔥
I definitely neglected double stroke practice for way too long when I first started playing. It takes time but it’s so worth it once your technique develops!
yep it only took the stress of an audition being a week away lol
This pillow sound more good than my bass drum
*better
@@Jerry-bb6cu did that make you feel good??? I mean better?? How many languages do you speak or write...? Ignorant....you probably speak American?
Pure gold! Material for practicing essentials for the rest of your drumming life served in less than 20 minutes.
Thank you, Jacob!
I started playing drums because I got plenty of time to play during quarantine, this helps a lot specialy for me as a beginner to improve my skills and techniques. 🤘 I could say that I'm addicted to learn more on how to the play drums.
I'm pretty nasty with singles. My doubles however, been practicing push/pull method forever and just recently started fast rolling with my doubles. It feels great when it starts working.
If you want to get better with singles, I'd say you should learn how to play blast beats and apply them to whatever music you listen to (doesn't have to be metal), and start practicing along to faster music in general. In my opinion, the best band to play along to for developing speed (in fills, in beats, in double kick) is Slayer
Sammy Loehnis By nasty he meant he has good singles. It’s like saying he has sick singles lol
@@jonathonstewart1436 Oh haha
Am I wrong or is Dave just playing two singles? I mean the difference is basically he accentuates the second stroke but he isn't using some special technique like push/pull right?
THIS VIDEO WORKS!!! I've been using the first technique for the last 2 weeks and already see improvements in my double stoke roll. Thanks for the content.
Hey Drumeo, I watched this video 2 or 3 times to really understand how you worked the wrists, sat down begind the kit for 30 minutes, and expanded my playing speed about three times! Thank you really, didn’t think I had that speed in me, and I feel super great and thankful! You guys are awesome!
🤘
“And my playing began to sound sound really really funky”
NEW DRUMMER: That’s right, I play funk
Dude 🤣
You will find out fast, you don't 😄
I don't think you know how good of a teacher you truly are, Jared. Maybe you do. This was so helpful. Thanks.
I have been drumming in a very noisy punk band 18 years now and we really only use single stroke rolls. So I never learned to play and apply doubles well. This is helping me so much - in 5 minutes I am seeing improvements. ❤
1:41 ... I’ve been playing for 35 years. I’ve never heard this before. Makes perfect sense. Thank you so much!
Can't tell you how much I appreciate these lessons as I'm getting back into it after over a decade of not playing. What a great teacher, and he is so humble! there are a lot of god complexes in the drumming sphere and it's just real refreshing when you find a great teacher who is down to earth with you and normalizes the struggles you will overcome as you improve!
I loved watching these exercises. Very helpful for an new-to-intermediate drummer who desires to improve.
this lesson is gold! im working on my doubles this week and already feeling more flow. this will help alot for sure
I recently subscribed to Drumeo almost solely because of Jared's free lessons. What an amazing talent and teacher.
Great lesson. Much appreciated.
absolutely amazing technique. don't think I could ever do doubles that well.
Very useful. Thanks for taking the time to make the video!
As always Jared, another great lesson. Thank you!
Thanks very much! This one was an eye opener for me.
Amazing lesson!! Thanks a lot!! Let’s keep on top of those important things!! Always...
You teach drumming Just exactly the same is my drum teacher taught me 30 years ago practicing on just a pillow and a metronome this is a very good technique to being a successful drum player. Thank you brother for the lesson.
Awesome breakdown, thank you
Whoa !! 80s flashback with that Peavey radial kit ! It's actually quite striking !
Thanks Jered. I really appreciate your lessons.

Absolutely the best drum channel on youtube
Awesome lesson! I am so frustrated with my doubles and will definitely incorporate these into my practice sessions! Thanks man and love the set and Paiste cymbals.
Same, agreed..
and yeah, I got the paiste signiture cymbals about 10 months ago, insane good sound.
Your drum set and drumming is amazing... I love it

This is a great lesson. Thanks 🙏
Thank you I really needed this
I really did enjoyed. I'll be 65 next October, and I bought an electronic drum set to learn drumming. Thought I play congas, I wanted to learn play the set. I use doble stroke on congas as well.
Thanks for your tutorials, you are a good teacher.
Nice job! Thank you 🙏🏼

what drumeo free lessons used to be a decade ago ! great lesson mr.Falk !
This is gold👍🏻
I love this channel.
Cheers Jared. You the man
The timing of these videos is always right after me realizing my weakness in that area. Just yesterday I was complaining about my doubles because I was so certain they were on point on the pad but when I got to the kit something was off.
That 1st fill is a fantastic fill...it builds...very very cool brother.
Thanks man! Great information! I’m still working hard to accent the second note of the double stroke 🙂
Great video a lot of youtubers just go into technique this seems to cover all the bases thanks drumeo dudes :b
Thanks for teaching
Thanks Jared!
beautiful drums..
this helped so much! i always wrote off the roll rudiments as a joke and never practiced them before this.
Twenty five years of playing drums I always enjoy going back to re-enforce technique on rudiments. Thanks Jared.
Thanks bro needed this 🙏
Thanks bro💯
Thank you so much
Thank you good lessons
I love the sound of double stroke roll but when you do it, its really not that easy. thanks jared!
Thanks! Ik really needed it this was the piece that I missed 🥴
I've been practicing doubles almost all day, I need this so bad right now 😍
This guys kits always sound great
I wanna play that set!!! That thing is so cool!
Your videos are incredibly helpful! Thank you. Sadly I can’t play my kit where I live only at practice so I play on pad and kick pad but you can practice this anywhere
Awesome, love you Jared 😁
That kit is something 😮😮😮
Thank you.
Incredible intro man, that sounded so beastly
Good information with great ideas. Now I just need the ambition I had when I first started drumming.
Good show!
This guy is GOOD ! 👍🏼👍🏼
Drumeo your vids Are killer thanks for the valuable tips and lessons I appreciate this more than you know.
Brilliant Video 👌🙏🏼🤩
I have watched almost all your lessons sir...And it had helped me a lot and I just can't be thankful...I always dream to come in drumeo studios and give once a lecture...
Thankyou sir for helping us so so much...I also bought your best beginner drum book...Really a crazy fan of you...thanks from my bottom of my heart..
Love from India
Thanks for your support 🤘
good stuff ty
I’ve been drumming for about two years...it’s hard to progress when your dyslexia interferes with your counting and also a learning disability that makes it hard to process things. I’ve been on the verge on quitting but still keep on wanting to learn and improve.
For someone with dyslexia you sure do write and spell very well! Good on you mate.
If you have a passion for the drums and haven't quit yet, even with the disabilities you have, I think you will enjoy the rewards of your hard work even more when you see improvements.
Remember, there are different kinds of learners, and one of the main ones with drumming is kinesthetic learning, or learning by feel. When you practice, really try to feel what the sticks are doing.
Also, if you feel the timing, you don't have to count in your head or out loud.
Keep at it, I wish you all the best on your drumming journey, I hope this helped in some way.
MetaGordy thank you for your support, English is me second language my dyslexia impacts more my reading and counting like I had stated bu I agree with the feel when you play !!!!
Listen to the beat of your heart. That worked for me.
Find your natural groove and ride it with all your heart
wonderful,,,thank you
I'm trying to do the double stroke fast roll that Danny carey does. Sooo haarddd. Thanks for the vid
Great lesson..!
