Rob Brown how would I apply these strokes and licks around the kit. I have been playing drums for awhile and I have gotten good but I kno I can get even better. My problem is applying the strokes around the toms and kick especially my doubles. I have control but not as well as I know I should and without that my speed is lacking so how can apply around the kit?. Also how can I get that very nice tempo watch you have? Thanks your videos have helped me in the past so I’m back for more lol thanks for your help.

Hi Rob, I started playing when I was 13, I am 66 now but never got into rudiments just concentrated on variations of beats. I can see where I have missed out all of these years. I will start practicing these rudiments you are sharing. Thank you.

Vernon Steinkamp if you enjoyed your experience than you didn’t miss out. It is so easy with people like Rob giving us great practice routines and inspiration to get better at the instrument we all love. There were no real resources when I was learning, and I definitely couldn’t afford great teaching. Drum on!

I agree with Vernon, and also have been playing for over thirty years without REALLY doing the rudimental work. Now I am and my playing feels totally different...and for the better (still feels "weird", but that will go away). Cheers!

I agree with you. Only, I started with rudiments when first started to play when I was about 13, now 53 and I REALLY wish I would've stuck practicing my rudiments because I would be really really good with them by now!! I still enjoyed playing but I can see where I would be much better had I kept up practice with the rudiments! Especially now that I have to play EVERYTHING with just my hands due to a serious motorcycle accident in 1991 that left me paralyzed from the armpits down!! I never gave up the drums though since I love playing so much! It was pretty rough at first trying to figure out how to play all the different beats and and other things that you're used to playing with four limbs and now you have to pay them with only two. Simple beats were easy but when you get into the more complex beats etc, and things like triplets and quadruplets getting them to sound the same using two limbs opposed to using four limbs that's where it got a lot more complicated!! It was almost like starting all over again. Also of course I had to switch to some electric gear so I could program a bass drum up where I could hit it with my hands etc. There's more of course but this comment is too long already and I think you get the idea. Thanks, keep on drumming and God bless you!

Hey, Rob! I just want to say that this video's opening solo around the kit, is EXACTLY how I strive and practice to be...loose, comfortable, fluid, and relaxed when playing. Your skills, technique, and, most importantly your attitude toward this fantastic instrument is so inspirational and insightful. When I'm asked, " Who is your favorite drummer?" The names Bonham, Gadd, Rich, Peart come to mind. But I answer Rob "Beatdown" Brown is my favorite drummer! You have done more for me than any other. To inspire another human being is a powerful thing, Rob.
    I Thank You.

Hey Rob. I just want to tell you i have been playing drums since 5 years old. Im now 44. I have always hated rudimentary practice and my left hand is weak. For the last few weeks i made myself start practicing rudiments to make myself better. I string together your single, double, paradiddle and six stroke role videos in each practice and i can now play things i never could before all thanks to you. Even playing in bands i never felt good at the drums and with this practice i now do i feel like im the best i have ever been. Your lessons make practicing fun. I still need alot of work on my weak left hand for double stroke rolls but i hope one day my doubles will come along. Thank you for you efforts. God bless brother.

Nice description of the 3 grips. I do mostly jazz now so developing QUIET fast singles is a goal for me. Eagerly awaiting more. BTW, I just started a $3/mo donation to you. You said you have 50,000 subscribers. If we each gave only $3/mo, that would provide $1,800,000/year. After taxes maybe only a million. I hope you can get by on that ‘cause a million ain’t what it used to be!

Rob since I've found your channel my approach to playing has hit the sky. The whole deal mate! From posture to stickings, to developing dynamics, to even tempo, to even volume, etc etc etc. I've played the same set of drums I got when I was a kid and I've used them through the years in dance bands, to covers bands BUT I've never attempted to play with consistent discipline. At the tender age of fifty, I'm rediscovering my playing and finally I'm focused on all of these things you demonstrate across your videos. I'm starting small. At the moment I've got sticks and a couple of cushions and now that I've got everything nice and comfortable I am practicing my rudiments in front of the screen. I'm not joking when I say that by following you I have advanced in a few months what I haven't been able to achieve in three decades! Thanks mate and keep the mojo coming :-)

Hey,,, don't kid yourself,,, You left out the press or buzz roll as an important skill to acquire !!!**!!1. It's a beautiful roll if played properly and is not matchable by any other sound,, I.e. A single, a double, a paradiddle , can all sound pretty much the same if played evenly,,, none of them sound like a press roll!! An amazing example of it is used by Tony Williams on one of those Lifetime recordings with McGlaughlin on it--- He goes From fff to ppp using a buzz roll-- as a fill ----So awesome!!!

10 days ago, I tried the first exercise only to fail miserably.
I poked around some more and I found out he uses the Moller Technique. And what this technique is, is it divides strokes into 4 types: tap, full-stroke, down-stroke, and up-stroke. You need to be able to train yourself to do the following:
    *R = Right hand, L = Left hand, D=Down-stroke, U = Up-stroke, T = Tap
    R(D) R(U) R(D) R(U) and L(D) L(U) L(D) L(U)
So you can then do this:
    R(D) L(T) R(U) L(T) R(D) L(T) R(U) L(T)
When you shift the accent to the 2nd note, it looks like this:
    R(T) L(D) R(T) L(U) R(T) L(D) R(T) L(U)
now I can do these exercises flawlessly. Merci beaucoup Rob Brown 🤙

I have been in a very dark place until just the last couple of days after discovering your practice sessions. I've pretty much lost all my work due to the virus and just lost my brother to cancer also. Doing just this lesson and practicing for a couple of hours has not only rocketed my speed and consistency, but it's given me focus and a fire to keep doing it. Rob, is it reasonable to start with 60 bpm?
The first exercise I perform at 90 bpm (which is something close to yours execution), but in the other exercises, I lose the accent and everything gets messed up.
I really struggle with my left hand and accents.

Start as slow as you need to. Find a tempo that you can do it consistently for a minute or two without screwing up. Even if it’s 47bpm. Your muscles need time to learn what to do to make it happen. Start there, then gradually increase the tempo as you get more comfortable. Repetition fixes everything👌🏾

Hi Rob. I'm 70 yo and have a lot of unlearning to do. Been playing drums since the 60s. Thanks for insights on single stroke roll Rob. I've got fairly good rudiment speed on some of the rudiments. Paradiddle speed 205 bpm, Paradiddle-diddle around 180-190+ on a good day but my single stroke speed AND control like you said has alway suffered. Hope to improve that with your insights you've shared. Thank you

Quite often in drum videos I see these squares of sound deadening material on the walls. Yet, instead of the entire wall being covered there are squares with spaces in between like in this video. Why is that?

Why can't I accent well with weak hand? Can't land it on 1. It's in my head/brain. It just isn't going together. I'm learning. Is this normal? Cheers

    • @BoyzNStuff
      @BoyzNStuff 4 года назад

Think Tank yea man, that’s normal. Most of us have a strong and weak hand. The way you can work on it is by practice leading with your weak hand. Start slow and practice the rudiments just like you would normally, but with weak hand lead. Eventually you’ll get more evened out and both hands will feel comfortable.

I'm a guitar player. I would like to drum to make home recordings with my guitar and bass. I got my practice pad in the mail today and started looking around for basic lessons: how to grip, etc. This lesson on single stroke was very helpful. My right hand is definitely ahead of my left for steady beat and control but Rob's comment on muscle memory struck home. I'll keep working on this until it is comfortable and steady and I can control the accents. Thanks.

….the demonstration on the wrist and accent movement-excellent. For me, I play the lowersingles continually without interruption and found the muscles build up speed naturally..l..not trying to increase speed . before your muscles are developed….allow natural bounce…..thanks

There are a couple of ways to do this. What I mean is, make it comfortable for yourself. Watch “Ian Pace Rudiments”. You will clearly see his fulcrum is his thumb & forefinger. His pinky is sticking out as if he’s having a spot of tea. Just have fun with it no matter how you do it.

Hey Rob Brown, there's a drummer who can reach 340bpm on single stroke roll, his name is Riccardo Merlini, it's good to practice single stroke roll at 300bpm with match grip, traditional grip has been banned due to the fact it can hurt your fingers, so match grip is the best way to practice single stroke roll and it's good for higher speeds.

  • @jjoneski2203
    @jjoneski2203 3 года назад

Yeah. Throw that crippled trad left hand grip right in the trash. It's where it belongs except if you have a slanted snare drum slung across your left leg like I did in 1965 high school marching band. It's a quite limited grip for anything else

  • @rewalczak74

Control is more important than speed. Take Tai Chi for example. The reason it is practiced slow is to perfect the movements. This becomes muscle memory. When you react the movement will be correct and effective. Drumming at a good personal tempo goes farther then running as fast as you can down hill only stumbling and falling. This frustration will cause you to do it wrong or give up. And after 90 days of going fast and doing it wrong you have wasted time. Thank you for your lessons.

Hey, it's a cool exercise for me being a beginner although not sure how the grip should look like, it's mentioned somehow to switch balance from 2nd one to the middle one when you strike as far as I understand, but if I use pinky then, whole hand closes like a fist. I tried to to exercises from the video with the blanket on part of the snare. There again you use'German' grip for improving your wrist or 'French' one for fingers.
Is there any movie you can learn just one grip like the one in this video with details, to avoid bad habits?

If you want to see a stellar example of the single stroke roll here on utube type in Emanuelle Caplette snare solo,,, Using German grip with some finger control of course she executes the fastest cleanest singles I’ve ever seen- especially unusual as this speed is usually only obtained through the French grip, ( Timpani)-.

Ayo, Mr. Brown, just wanted to say how much I appreciate this channel! I’m a jazz guitarist of several years now, but have always had an interest in drums and started playing a bit in the past year and sat in for the drummer in my small jazz group.
Never played a rudiment in my life and had no clue about proper technique. I decided to remedy that and start getting serious about percussion. Happened upon this channel and firstly, I’ve learned SO MUCH in just the last week. Secondly, I can’t tell you how many times I’ve seen something like “I’ve been playing 20 years and you just fixed such and such problem for me!” Really gives me the confidence that I’m starting from basically ground zero getting all the right information!
I’ve got a practice pad and some sticks and I’m ready to start really molding my playing, keep up the good work!

Yo! So many videos that I don’t know if you’ve covered it, but if you hold the sticks with all your fingers touching them, how far into your palm do you tuck it? Is it more a looser grip at the tips of the fingers or tighter into the palm? Would be nice to see on video but maybe I missed it

I clocked that shirt before you even mentioned it. One of my favorite bands. If not the favorite. It is a tossup between alice in chains and depeche mode. You have to be a certain age to have been exposed to depeche mode as they are not well know to the younger kids. Even though people have convered them they are stil not widely known. Especially in the US.

Great lesson! Only problem I have is most of these lessons suggest nailing this at slower tempos means speed will come naturally and thats not happening for me. I’ve got nice tight and fluid rudiments but they fall apart when increasing tempo, I tense up and just can’t get the speed required. I assume its all in the fingers but Im yet to see someone go into detail on that. Would love to see something around this!
