*Just how many game changers can I give y’all in one year?!! Plenty. That’s how many 😉 Trust me, man. Watch this entire video…do these exercises correctly, and you’ll have a seriously smokin’ single stroke!*
Rob Brown how would I apply these strokes and licks around the kit. I have been playing drums for awhile and I have gotten good but I kno I can get even better. My problem is applying the strokes around the toms and kick especially my doubles. I have control but not as well as I know I should and without that my speed is lacking so how can apply around the kit?. Also how can I get that very nice tempo watch you have? Thanks your videos have helped me in the past so I’m back for more lol thanks for your help.
Hi Rob, I started playing when I was 13, I am 66 now but never got into rudiments just concentrated on variations of beats. I can see where I have missed out all of these years. I will start practicing these rudiments you are sharing. Thank you.
Vernon Steinkamp if you enjoyed your experience than you didn’t miss out. It is so easy with people like Rob giving us great practice routines and inspiration to get better at the instrument we all love. There were no real resources when I was learning, and I definitely couldn’t afford great teaching. Drum on!
I agree with Vernon, and also have been playing for over thirty years without REALLY doing the rudimental work. Now I am and my playing feels totally different...and for the better (still feels "weird", but that will go away). Cheers!
I’m a 55 year old woman who wanted to play the drums when she was young but never was allowed. I started drumming a year ago (taking biweekly lessons as well) and am now working on the rudiments 😁. Looks like I started just in time 😉.
I agree with you. Only, I started with rudiments when first started to play when I was about 13, now 53 and I REALLY wish I would've stuck practicing my rudiments because I would be really really good with them by now!! I still enjoyed playing but I can see where I would be much better had I kept up practice with the rudiments! Especially now that I have to play EVERYTHING with just my hands due to a serious motorcycle accident in 1991 that left me paralyzed from the armpits down!! I never gave up the drums though since I love playing so much! It was pretty rough at first trying to figure out how to play all the different beats and and other things that you're used to playing with four limbs and now you have to pay them with only two. Simple beats were easy but when you get into the more complex beats etc, and things like triplets and quadruplets getting them to sound the same using two limbs opposed to using four limbs that's where it got a lot more complicated!! It was almost like starting all over again. Also of course I had to switch to some electric gear so I could program a bass drum up where I could hit it with my hands etc. There's more of course but this comment is too long already and I think you get the idea. Thanks, keep on drumming and God bless you!
I'm only 22 but I've done the exact same, in a band and I can't even do a roll but can play in time and have a good variation of beats, I just learned from playing along to songs
Hey, Rob! I just want to say that this video's opening solo around the kit, is EXACTLY how I strive and practice to be...loose, comfortable, fluid, and relaxed when playing. Your skills, technique, and, most importantly your attitude toward this fantastic instrument is so inspirational and insightful. When I'm asked, " Who is your favorite drummer?" The names Bonham, Gadd, Rich, Peart come to mind. But I answer Rob "Beatdown" Brown is my favorite drummer! You have done more for me than any other. To inspire another human being is a powerful thing, Rob. I Thank You.
Well said. I heard a song where the drummer was doing a two beat (double time) at 150 (300) beats per minute. He is doing this for at least 5 minutes with ease. I go straight to Rob for advice on speeding up my singles strokes. Thanks Rob.
Hey Rob. I just want to tell you i have been playing drums since 5 years old. Im now 44. I have always hated rudimentary practice and my left hand is weak. For the last few weeks i made myself start practicing rudiments to make myself better. I string together your single, double, paradiddle and six stroke role videos in each practice and i can now play things i never could before all thanks to you. Even playing in bands i never felt good at the drums and with this practice i now do i feel like im the best i have ever been. Your lessons make practicing fun. I still need alot of work on my weak left hand for double stroke rolls but i hope one day my doubles will come along. Thank you for you efforts. God bless brother.
Wow!- I'm a beginner- (aged 59) finally fulfilling a dream to learn how to play drums. Have been messing about on a beginner e drum kit for two months and have just got a practice pad/snare stand to learn the rudiments properly. I love your clear, crisp presentation. The biggest compliment I can pay you at this stage is to say 'you make rudiments fun'! Sincere thanks from U.K.
Dear Rob, I don't know if you're the best drummer but you're definitely the best drumming teacher I've found. I have been practicing your rudiments for not even a month and my skills have already improved a lot and I am a 38 years old beginner. I finally grasped the proper hand technique. Thank you and chapeaux bas to you my friend.
Im a 66 year young white dude and i love this man !,i could watch him play all day and hes a great teacher like billy cobham masters at this way of teaching not boring thanks
Hey there Rob, I just want to thank you mate. I've been a drummer for years but never really practiced rudiments, I mean I've tried but I never seem to progress or get much better. I have been in a very dark place until just the last couple of days after discovering your practice sessions. I've pretty much lost all my work due to the virus and just lost my brother to cancer also. Doing just this lesson and practicing for a couple of hours has not only rocketed my speed and consistency, but it's given me focus and a fire to keep doing it. You've helped me in alot more ways than just improving my drumming and I really want you to know your way of teaching is awesome.. keeep it up . Daz
Rob, Just wanted to say not only do you have mad skills on the kit, but explaning/giving lessons as well! My hero! You've inspired me to get back to the kit! Im an "older new drummer" if that makes any sense... lol! Thanks for all you do!
Rob I have been playing drums since 1989. In the few videos I have watched so far, you have changed the way I play. I am becoming a much better drummer because of you.thanks man.
Love you, Rob! You're the best! Most teacher's videos are promotional, blurry, full of omissions. Watching your tutorials just like seat in front of real teacher. Best for beginners! Thank you a lot for providing this for free! God bless you!
Thanks Rob, this is the best explanation of single stroke control and development I have seen. Other drummers' videos make me feel stupid for not understanding what they're doing.
So the Canadian grip is like the American grip, just much more polite, and stickier from the maple syrup. :) Gonna practice this for two days straight by a lake in upstate NY. Singles, my pad, the lake, and nothin to do but get better.
15:24 does anyone else think it looks like rob is holding his arm behind his back and someone else is playing. Rob’s posture is insane. My favorite online drum teacher.
Rob since I've found your channel my approach to playing has hit the sky. The whole deal mate! From posture to stickings, to developing dynamics, to even tempo, to even volume, etc etc etc. I've played the same set of drums I got when I was a kid and I've used them through the years in dance bands, to covers bands BUT I've never attempted to play with consistent discipline. At the tender age of fifty, I'm rediscovering my playing and finally I'm focused on all of these things you demonstrate across your videos. I'm starting small. At the moment I've got sticks and a couple of cushions and now that I've got everything nice and comfortable I am practicing my rudiments in front of the screen. I'm not joking when I say that by following you I have advanced in a few months what I haven't been able to achieve in three decades! Thanks mate and keep the mojo coming :-)
I used to go to drum classes but I didn't have a kit back then. I recently had my own kit, and now I am coming across various issues I never thought about back then. But this guy has solutions to almost all of them. Thanks Rob for making my life way easier. You're such a practical guy. Keep it going.
I’ve only been playing for a year and ive been extremely discouraged with my single strokes lately. I wasted way to much time focusing on speed thinking id sound more impressive but its videos like this that motivate me to practice the right way and to stick with ot slow and steady. Thanks a lot for the work you put into these videos bro
History of self-taught kit play, 30 year break. Now retired and bought Roland V-drums and a practice pad. Working on rudiments for the first time and this video and your others really help! Thanks so much for the gracious gifts Rob.
wild bill I hear you. I took a 40 year hiatus and am trying to get my chops back. Rob your vids are the best ever man. Can't tell you how much you have helped keep 'em coming man.
Hi Rob. Talked to several drummers, and watched many videos about drumming. You're the first person I've truly connected with. Your explanation and examples are perfect for my way of thinking. Thank you for all you do. Keep up the great work!!!
I started playing drums about 20 years ago. Never took tuition or practiced rudiments. Unsurprisingly I hit a ceiling very quickly, was never really happy with my chops, got frustrated and eventually stopped playing. I know now the reason why - not having the structure to practice with purpose and really work on my weaknesses. Back at it now, inspired and ready to pursue my goal to become the drummer I always wanted to be. Singles, Doubles, Single Paradiddle - every day.
Love what you said about spending that little extra $ for a proper t-shirt and support the band. Bootleg merch is something to be ashamed of. Like watching a hard-coded korean sub cam of a movie instead of going to the cinema. If you like it, support it!
This showed me that I can't follow a tempo without accenting notes. The second pattern (accent on the e) is one of the most difficult things I had to do in a while. Also, counting out loud the 1-2-3-4 is so hard it's making me sweat!! I think I comment every one of your videos Rob, but honestly , I always feel I have to comment to make you know you do top tier quality teaching.
Hi Rob. Thank you very much for sharing your drum knowledge. I started playing drums around 10 years old and played until I was 21. Discouraged by the quality of my kit and the fact I lost the use of my left leg due to a motorcycle accident, I stopped playing. I'm back! 34 years later and enjoying your videos immensely. You make the lessons interesting by explaining the mechanics behind all the drumming techniques. You are relatable and fun to watch. Thanks again.
I recognize this is an older video, but I still have my bit to add. I've been a guitar player of nearly 18 or 19years ( started so young I didn't really have a great focus till much later lol ) but, my dad has always been a very level headed accomplished drummer. So I grew up just having fun making noise on a set. But this year he surprised me with a nice vintage kit that I really like. Iv been exclusively practicing these excorsices and developing my double stroke roll on the pad. My dad and I really like your channel, and this has been a great journey to embark on in tandem to guitar. Thanks for all you do here! My only focus is to groove responsibly!
Man, this lesson was amazing: simple but very effective for developing the single stroke. Thanks for your patience and the good information. This is priceless.
I have been playing drums for quite some time and I have learned from many teachers, masterclasses, videos, seminars and so on. You are so good at teaching Rob ! Your lessons are simply awesome ! Thank you so much.
I’ve been playing for almost 4 years now and this dude a has helped me improve so much in the past months with speed and control thank you sir I appreciate you
Ayo, Mr. Brown, just wanted to say how much I appreciate this channel! I’m a jazz guitarist of several years now, but have always had an interest in drums and started playing a bit in the past year and sat in for the drummer in my small jazz group. Never played a rudiment in my life and had no clue about proper technique. I decided to remedy that and start getting serious about percussion. Happened upon this channel and firstly, I’ve learned SO MUCH in just the last week. Secondly, I can’t tell you how many times I’ve seen something like “I’ve been playing 20 years and you just fixed such and such problem for me!” Really gives me the confidence that I’m starting from basically ground zero getting all the right information! I’ve got a practice pad and some sticks and I’m ready to start really molding my playing, keep up the good work!
Dude I finally pieced together a kit after more than 15 years of interest in drums. Since then I've found 2 folks on RUclips that make sense to me. You're one! I love your style and love to learn. You make it easy. Keep it up bigdog and ima keep watching
Your lessons are great Rob, you have a good balance as a teacher between raw information/explanation. Ive just realized how much i underestimated the singles ( i have a great paradiddle diddle, for example but my 32nd singles are crap!) 3 of you vids from singles to rolls can make a very useful routine. There is so much info out there, and self taught guys like me usually get themselves lost as far as how to practice, and how to organize practice time.
Thanks Rob. I have not played in 50 years but I still got my Ludwigs. I am feeling the need to jump back in and I very much appreciate your help. Please tell me about your watch. I am thinking that would really help me stay on beat.
Hey Rob, greetings from Germany. Just felt like leaving a message after watching tons of your videos. I'm probably one the oldest guys watching your your stuff. But even after playing drums for over 40 years, there's alway something to get from your stuff. So I just wanted to thank you for the really great an inspiring videos you're putting online. When ever you come to Germany, let me know so I can buy you a beer. Cheers, Sameh
Been in drum retirement for a few years recently bought an electric kit and started to get back into playing and your videos have inspired and educated me like no other on RUclips! Fantastic channel I love the incredible detail you go into, I feel like a more accomplished drummer already and I’ve only been watching your videos for around a week!. Keep up the good work!
Nice to see another Torontonian! Really appreciate the breakdowns in the lessons. You make it more for the lay person starting out which is absolutely phenomenal because not all of us are proficient in the language of music. Have been dreaming about drumming for years and years and years, and I finally went out and bought a pad and some 5a's. With your lessons i feel confident that with enough time and effort I will get there.
Nice description of the 3 grips. I do mostly jazz now so developing QUIET fast singles is a goal for me. Eagerly awaiting more. BTW, I just started a $3/mo donation to you. You said you have 50,000 subscribers. If we each gave only $3/mo, that would provide $1,800,000/year. After taxes maybe only a million. I hope you can get by on that ‘cause a million ain’t what it used to be!
My Band director Mr. Ormsbee always said quality over quantity. There's a reason his bands almost always got blue medals at competitions. Probably the most influential teacher I ever had.
Cool stuff! Rob, I like your channel! Thank you for being here for the world! Also I'd like to share with all who reads this comment section... Add to these two more patterns. 1 - "one e AND a two e AND a three e AND a four e AND a". 2 - "one e and A two e and A three e and A four e and A" (big letters for the accents). And over this you can play eighth singles with your feet like regular RLRL. I use this as a warmup every single time. Then when you feel comfortable with it just move your accents around the kit. If you're a beginner you'll get your first drum solo by the end of the month. (Don't know if there is a video on this here. I've just subscribed))))
Thanks Rob. I’ve gained so much from your lessons. You delve in depth on many topics others take for granted that everyone knows. I like the fact that you take time to explain things in depth with a great teaching style. I’m a fan that’s close by in the Falls, and really appreciate what you’re doing.
This has been one of the best videos I’ve seen if not the best on explaining and going into detail with technique, knowledge, etc. I’ve been watching them all the past week and yours has been the best in my opinion. Thank you! I’m a subscriber now! 🙏🏼
OH MAN.... first I left a comment by your traditional grip video.... then I spotted this one. THIS is great! Once I hear a few rounds I can actually keep up! YEA! Oh thank you for these.
This is AWESOME!!!! Been drumming for 25 years but my technique SUCKS!!!! I truly feel like this will help me alot, starting from the basics. Thank you for sharing the knowledge.
Can't thank you enough for all the material you're providing Rob. Thank you thank you thank you thank you thank you thank you thank you thank you thank you thank you thank you thank you thank you!
Noticed the DM shirt right away! I was attacked by a couple of non-DM Fans at the "People are People" tour. They were jumping sections and getting our group's way. I got a security guard to kick them out. They came back later to attempt to give me a beat down True story. Another awesome video on rudiments. I've been playing for years and still learn a lot from you. I learned the set straight off and skipped a lot of rudiments.
Thanks Rob, this is invaluable information that I'm passing onto my students. Single Stroke roll is by far the most important rudiment to learn, thanks for breaking this down and making it understandable and fun to learn.
2 minutes in and had to subscribe. You got some crazy groove brother! Definitely looking forward to developing my singles. I leaned the push pull technique and immediately got my double strokes down, but felt I'm skipping a step. Thank you for your amazing advice. You're the man!
Everytime Everytime I see one of your videos it helps me get 💯🙏💯 better before the video ends thanks so much ❤️👍😎 for your help man 👊 please keep doing what you're 💯 doing 🙏 thanks
I've had two teachers tell me that the three rudiments to learn are the single-stroke, double-stroke and flam because a paradiddle is just two singles and a double. But I can see where you're coming from because by that rationale a flam is just two singles but it's still so important... Heh, music can lead to so much discussion. Love the videos man!
Like the american grip is a perfect blend of two great grip style , I find your instructional videos to be a perfect blend between strict discipline and relaxed groovin' . Gracie , marci beaucoup
10 days ago, I tried the first exercise only to fail miserably. I poked around some more and I found out he uses the Moller Technique. And what this technique is, is it divides strokes into 4 types: tap, full-stroke, down-stroke, and up-stroke. You need to be able to train yourself to do the following: *R = Right hand, L = Left hand, D=Down-stroke, U = Up-stroke, T = Tap R(D) R(U) R(D) R(U) and L(D) L(U) L(D) L(U) So you can then do this: R(D) L(T) R(U) L(T) R(D) L(T) R(U) L(T) When you shift the accent to the 2nd note, it looks like this: R(T) L(D) R(T) L(U) R(T) L(D) R(T) L(U) now I can do these exercises flawlessly. Merci beaucoup Rob Brown 🤙
This helps me a lot. Especially the last part where you alternate... breaking that same old same old muscle memory. Im trying to make this the year of getting to the doubles down by backing up and starting out with those cool alternating singles. I really appreciate your hard work !!!
Would love to see a side shot of this, you know, for us real newcomers to the drums - just to see how your pinky/ring is interacting. Don't get me wrong - this is an excellent lesson, & for free too. Thank you. Day 3 of my Drum Adventure and I am now subscribed.
….the demonstration on the wrist and accent movement-excellent. For me, I play the lowersingles continually without interruption and found the muscles build up speed naturally..l..not trying to increase speed . before your muscles are developed….allow natural bounce…..thanks
*Just how many game changers can I give y’all in one year?!! Plenty. That’s how many 😉 Trust me, man. Watch this entire video…do these exercises correctly, and you’ll have a seriously smokin’ single stroke!*
BTW, LOVE this shit!
Rob Brown hay Robb what watch is that called
That's the Soundbrenner Pulse wearable metronome
dude i think the most important part of this video, you kinda flew right past it! putting the fulcrum on the middle finger?! whaaaaaaaaaa?!?!!?
Rob Brown how would I apply these strokes and licks around the kit. I have been playing drums for awhile and I have gotten good but I kno I can get even better. My problem is applying the strokes around the toms and kick especially my doubles. Dude I don’t know if people can see it but damn you’re humorous as hell. Great lessons man. I’m subscribed.
Doeven Ong dude, I laugh so hard at rob. He is fkin hilarious.
But hell is not humorous.hahaha ,I crack myself up.
This dude is the eldorado of drumming lessons. So much benefits out it its insane. And easy to understand.

Rob: "AMERICAN GRIP"
me: thinking that he will explain how to hold a gun
You are by far the best drum instructor on the scene today!
THIS CHANNEL IS A GAME CHANGER
"Keep those quiet notes nice and quiet" was great advice. It's surprising how difficult it is to keep the non-accent notes consistent. Great exercise.
My singles were a disaster until I saw this. You take the mystery out of learning this stuff - best drum tutor on the tube, thank you Rob Brown.
Rob, you are currently my all-time favorite drummer. Thank you for your awesome videos. Btw.....Depeche Mode, kicks butt.
Thanks a lot, man 🙂🤘🏽
Dang. Your playing kicks so much ass. And i agree. Mode is fantastic. 🥂✨
I like that you show the finished ' product ' at the beginning of the vid .
It's inspirational ; We can see what we're working toward from the start .
I feel like I have alot of gaps in my drumming lol, I can do more advanced things than this but it took me a while to get this down lol
I have seen players who can play fast ,just don't ask them to play slow ,they can't for some reason.
You will find your way ,pigeons all ways do.
I hear you. I feel like some of my skills are decent, but some are definitely pretty basic at this point.
That's why it's the hardest rudiment.
Same! I got really screwed up with Moeller and rebound dependent so here I am…. 😂
Im a 66 year young white dude and i love this man !,i could watch him play all day and hes a great teacher like billy cobham masters at this way of teaching not boring thanks
How is 66 young, and cool
It's one thing to have a lot of chops, but it is another thing to sound so grooving and musical like you do. Thanks Rob!

@@jamesjackson5418 Cool. I'm from the area. Hope to get back there real soon

I’ve searched for so long for a good drum instructor on here. Now I’ve found a great one. The wait if the search was completely worth it.
History of self-taught kit play, 30 year break. Now retired and bought Roland V-drums and a practice pad. Working on rudiments for the first time and this video and your others really help! Thanks so much for the gracious gifts Rob.
rob, not only are your lessons very comprehensible, but the skills develop very quickly with practice
Mr Rob, I'm back into drumming after 30+ years away from the kit. Love your lessons, best teacher BY far! Thanks & have an awsome day!!
wild bill I hear you.
Rob is a likable guy. I have never met him and know him but I feel that he is a friend of mine. He gives us very good lessons. Thanks, Rob!
I love your style of teaching .. always simple but never easy.Thank you.
Thanks again.
thanks Rob .. I started playing a few months ago, I'm 45 years old .. and your lessons make everything practical and stimulating
Mr. Brown, wow.! Your finesse is absolutely outstanding. Thank you.
Man, I did s quick search for technique. Dozens of drummers. Watched yours, your technique and explanation are spot on! Thank you!
Hey thanks a lot, man. Glad you’ve found the videos helpful 🙂👊🏽
Dude I finally pieced together a kit after more than 15 years of interest in drums. Since then I've found 2 folks on RUclips that make sense to me. You're one! I love your style and love to learn. You make it easy. Keep it up bigdog and ima keep watching
Great no frills teaching. all solid instruct rudimental practice tips. Really like the teaching style.
Rob, thank you for what you do. These lessons have been super helpful in re developing my chops. You are a true professional.
I also feel that I am making progress with him
Thanks Rob...I'm on it. Year of the hands, baby!!
Finally! Someone breaking down the mechanics of the roll effectivelly..bravo Rob!
Great analogy using that 105mph fastball concept
Rob, very impressive... I've been playing drums for 50 years... love what you're doing.
Great lesson Rob, my singles always need working on ,so these exercises are definitely needed
Great. Another direct, simple, clear lesson. Thanks!
He teaches simplicity and I'm very thankful
This has been one of the best videos I’ve seen if not the best on explaining and going into detail with technique, knowledge, etc. I’ve been watching them all the past week and yours has been the best in my opinion. Thank you! I’m a subscriber now! 🙏🏼
your a very good teacher - I like you and what you do, best regards from the north of Germany
OH MAN.... first I left a comment by your traditional grip video.... then I spotted this one. THIS is great! Once I hear a few rounds I can actually keep up! YEA! Oh thank you for these.
Love the shirt. Rest in peace Andy Fletcher.
The more you teach me the more I realize I’ve been playing all these years wrong!! I shoulda took lessons but I’m learning now!!! Thank you BDB!
🎶❤️🎶
You are a great teacher. I'm going to support you as soon as I can.
As a newbie! Your lessons are awesome, Thank you for your encouragement and support!💖
Rob, you make the complex understandable
Thanks Rob, this is invaluable information that I'm passing onto my students. Single Stroke roll is by far the most important rudiment to learn, thanks for breaking this down and making it understandable and fun to learn.
Ive been practicing this for about a week and a half and i have noticed a HUGE jump in control, speed and dynamic range! Great exercise
Wicked 🙂🤘🏽
This exercise is going to come in very handy for me. 👍🏼 Thanks for posting with a matched grip again also.
You always seem to "hit" the nail on the head. Back to Basics !! Thanks. Can't wait till the next video comes out.
Hi Rob! Thanks to your video I try to use middle finger as fulcrum opposed to index finger - whole new feeling and control. Thanks!
You need to be able to train yourself to do the following:
*R = Right hand, L = Left hand, D=Down-stroke, U = Up-stroke, T = Tap
R(D) R(U) R(D) R(U) and L(D) L(U) L(D) L(U)
So you can then do this:
R(D) L(T) R(U) L(T) R(D) L(T) R(U) L(T)
When you shift the accent to the 2nd note, it looks like this:
R(T) L(D) R(T) L(U) R(T) L(D) R(T) L(U)
now I can do these exercises flawlessly. Merci beaucoup Rob Brown 🤙
Right, before you watch this you need to see the Vic Firth vid entitled “Grip and basic strokes”
Learning a lot from your videos, BUT those depeche mode shirts, men.......you rock!!! Thanks and cheers from Mexico!
I think I get where your going with this and I'm more than happy to follow along. Thanks for your help dude.
….the demonstration on the wrist and accent movement-excellent. For me, I play the lowersingles continually without interruption and found the muscles build up speed naturally..l..not trying to increase speed . before your muscles are developed….allow natural bounce…..thanks
GreaT LESSON. Definitely helps tapping the foot.
Thanks immensely Rob Brown for such great teaching! It was so nice working out under your tutelage!! Have started following you a while back!
Now that I am a member of drumeo, I will Lord willing follow you on drumeo too.
Thanks rob this works for me as soon as I tried it . Just feels good from the start no tension in the muscles
Another fantastic video from a throughly decent man, Rob Brown....Thank you.
Glad you made these lessons. I need them just like this. Thank you!
You're the real deal Rob! Thanks.
Super Helpful!!! Seriously helping my left hand clumsiness
Excellent vid, ty for providing high quality instruction, perfect context, and great lol embellishments...
