As a self taught drummer at 60 years old ,when I watch you videos I clearly see why I have skill gaps in certain areas , but at 60 I’m still learning . Thank you.
@@MariaWulfMusic at 60 I’m not trying to compete with anyone with my playing , RUclips will show you really fast that there are 10 year olds that can clean you clock . I’m just trying to enjoy finding answers to why I could never play certain things . This video gives me insight into that . Thanks.
Love the no frills, no backwards baseball cap, style here. These are the exact technique lessons my teacher taught me years ago. I was looking for a good refresher. Found it. Subscribed.
My finger technique is terrible, this is the absolute best video I have accidentally stumbled across. I wish I'd see this 3 years ago when I started playing. Thank you.
This is an amazing channel. The level of detail is awesome. Thanks for enabling comments so that I could thank you for creating these thoughtful lessons!
I was a self-taught drummer in my younger days. I haven't played in years. I'm 71 years old now and I bought a drum kit and I saw your finger exercises. The left-hand pinky exercise was sad due to arthritis. But as difficult as this was, it caused me to see how much work it will take to even become a mediocre drummer. But I'm sure that with practice and hard work I can learn to play again. Thanks for showing me where I need to concentrate my focus. Any tips would be appreciated.
All I have rn is a drum pad but getting an electronic kit for Christmas, but have been watching TONS of videos on drums and technique, and this is by far one of the best ones out there. Thank you for sharing!
I've been a drum teacher for years and have never heard of a lot of this advice. Thank you for these amazing tips; I'll have to show this video to my students!
Been trying to get confident playing metal faster and I’ve never seen such a great break down of the finger techniques, also didn’t expect adding the pinky in. Thank you for making this video!
I have been going through a lot of courses recently but never could have the benefits i had from the first time i watched yours , so helpful so practical . Plz keep going , looking forward more of this .
thanks so much for sharing! this is really good. you've made me realise where my bad technique I've developed over the last few years has come from now. I will work on my control again as per your suggestions! Something like 50 years of playing and instead of improving I've been deteriorating. Thankyou! So excited to try this out tomorrow!
It's my first time here and I took less than a minute to understand you really are an exellent drum educator. Thank you for your work and greetings from Italy.
I've just discovered your channel from this amazing video. I'm sitting here with my practice pad in front of me learning things I should have known years ago! Truly excellent, your pace and presentation are spot on for me. I'm an intermediate drummer who is going back to basics to correct many years of self taught bad habits. I've subscribed, looking forward to your version of the video for traditional grip. Keep up the awesome work, and many thanks! Nick, London UK
Thanks, Nick. I really appreciate the feedback because it helps me to know what's working and what's not. I actually go into detail on some finger control exercises in my Traditional Grip Exercises, here: ruclips.net/video/Z9g7nv3PCrg/видео.htmlsi=_MB5skN3vi80bM9k. I also finally made a follow up here: ruclips.net/video/pupvjo-Qycs/видео.htmlsi=burdHOFr07ZZoaB0
Thank you! This instruction is what finally made me understand (and feel, which is the most improtant) the reason why my left hand was unable to even get close to the right hand ability when doing 3 or 4 consecuituve note patterns in the first page of stick control. I have been trying to address this for some weeks now, and now I have a clear path for practice. Will keep focusing on these excercises. Really hope that another gem of a video like this pops up in the future.
Thank you for this. I realized I was practicing control and rudiments in French grip and then when I actually wanna play, I play American grip. Now I can change it.
Just wanted to stop by again and say the adding and removing fingers exercise is SUPER helpful. I remember someone talking about this exercise on reddit. Didn't think much of it at first but wow, just been doing this two days and I'm astounded by the results. Please make more videos like these!!
Thanks for watching, James. The panels are from a company called Felt Right. They're super easy to use, just peel and stick. They come in lots of colors and sizes too.
Hi Maria, one day you should make a video about, which sticks you play with and why. It's always interesting to hear about drummers preferences in this respect.
such a good video. I'm just starting to pick up the drums again, but still a beginner. Thank you so much, you have just saved me an enormous amount of time and confusion
I don't have any musical instrument practice except acoustic guitar for 6 months and i always find myself watching a ton of drum videos. It looks so fun and honestly i think i really want to try. Thank you for this video because it will be awesome to practice this when i get some stix on my hands.
Thanks a lot Maria! I have watched loads of videos to isolated my fingers but yours made the different! So easy to follow and amazingly explained! You rock!!
Just came across this video now. I feel such a connection with this lesson as I'm currently being held back by speed/dynamics due to my bad technique. I should have watched this one before the one on doubles! Thanks for sharing such a valuable lesson.
I have my first drum lesson tomorrow and I'm so glad I found this video before I get into the habit of playing any kind of technique. Otherwise I always find out about something like this years later 😄
Thanks for this. I’d like to see you speak about stick rebound more. I get what you’re saying, but wrist technique and even the arms can take advantage of the upstroke as well as the downstroke.
I am also interested how you apply this to the kit. Moving around the drum kit involves moving around to different playing surfaces. This is where up and down (wrist) strokes can happy the drummer move around and play multiple instruments at the same time :)
Thank you Maria. I'm a fellow instructor as well and it's great to finally see a drummer who knows exactly what to do, how to do it and explain it so anyone can achieve it. Too many self proclaimed pros swamp the Internet with misinformation. It's refreshingly good to see someone presenting the correct way. Anyone reading this comment, understand this video is the end of your search on how to gain finger control. Do exactly what Maria says and you'll gain much finger control. Thanks again Maria!
Can’t express how much I appreciate this! I laughed out loud when you said some drummers have to switch to French grip to play finger technique, that is EXACTLY what I’ve been doing! Time to practice this for the next 10 years 🙏
Thank you, I'm glad you're finding it helpful. Having control over this technique is really useful when playing fast tempos and when you're needing to use more sensitivity on jazz drums.
WOW! I really appreciate your class, because with a few minutes for a few days I have considerably improved my way of playing, because I see that it is not the use of the arm/wrist but the fingers. Your class is a treasure for us beginners! And I am already one more subscriber to your channel. Until the next class. Thank you very much.
Seriously, in just the first 3 minutes I found out what they have not mentioned in other tutorials. Its all about the thumb roll snap back. The other tutorials just say let it snap back, Im thinking, "well it doesn't". So you show that it takes the additional action of the thumb roll back I think will be a game changer for the technique. I really do appreciate this video!!!!!
Thank you for this great information! I just picked up drumming again after decades off and this is one area I am really weak at. The perfect video at the perfect time!
Two reasons why I subscribed. First and foremost...you did NOT ask me to. Nothing is more annoying than people who say, "please, subscribe and like!" Drives me crazy. Next, your content is very helpful. Playing now for about 3+ years I'm learning speed is really difficult to harness without some good technique. It takes a ton of practice. And you really break it down making it fun to learn.
Thank you so much for that lesson. Really cool tips, your right elbow going upper than the left one helps me a lot to not feel guilty, joke aside, thanks master.
I'm a metalhead and all (free!) finger technique tutorials online from the metal people don't even come close to detail and usefulness for a beginner as this one. That's a treasure.
Wanted to thank you for this video and the press roll video as well. It seems like you explain things fully and don't hold back info. So glad you randomly popped up in my videos.
Your lesson is spot on! You explained every challenge there is to developing finger technique and how to remedy it. I look forward to seeing more of your videos. Thank you!

The video with no nonsense and no show off.. only teaching .. just great
This is amazing. So many vids basically tell you to do finger techniques, but don't actually break it down.
finding good instructors on youtube makes me so happy. people that thoroughly explain every step with the why and the how is just amazing
Yeah it's hard to find quality videos like this. I subscribed instantly. Happy drumming my friend 😄
FINALLY, a "teaching video" that actually HAS TEACHING. WELL DONE. KUDOS
This is by far, the best lesson on basics on sticking and practice regimes. So simple and yet most practical. Very well presented. Thank you. 🙂

What makes this video so excellent is that you continually show the stick and finger action when you explain. thank you will practice …

Wow this is probably the best I have seen in this topic. very clearly explained! Thank you. I can’t wait to see the traditional grip!!!!
Agreed. 1000%
