As a self taught drummer at 60 years old ,when I watch you videos I clearly see why I have skill gaps in certain areas , but at 60 I’m still learning . Thank you.
It's never too late to end each day better than the last.
@@MariaWulfMusic at 60 I’m not trying to compete with anyone with my playing , RUclips will show you really fast that there are 10 year olds that can clean you clock . I’m just trying to enjoy finding answers to why I could never play certain things . This video gives me insight into that . Thanks.
Keep learning! You're awesome!:DD
I am a self-taught drummer too. Great to know you are one of me too!
Me too go ladies
This is amazing. So many vids basically tell you to do finger techniques, but don't actually break it down.
This one video, 50 years ago. Would have changed everything.
Share it to those children you know so they won't have to echo your sentiments
Oh, I am SO feeling that
Or, maybe availability of RUclips 50 years ago would have changed everything.
Yup
This information has been available for at least 50yrs. The problem was finding a teacher who taught it.
I was a self-taught drummer in my younger days. I haven't played in years. I'm 71 years old now and I bought a drum kit and I saw your finger exercises. The left-hand pinky exercise was sad due to arthritis. But as difficult as this was, it caused me to see how much work it will take to even become a mediocre drummer. But I'm sure that with practice and hard work I can learn to play again. Thanks for showing me where I need to concentrate my focus. Any tips would be appreciated.
I’ve been playing for 20 years and this video was extremely useful in helping me break some bad habits. Thank you.
I've been a drum teacher for years and have never heard of a lot of this advice. Thank you for these amazing tips; I'll have to show this video to my students!
My finger technique is terrible, this is the absolute best video I have accidentally stumbled across. I wish I'd see this 3 years ago when I started playing. Thank you.
finding good instructors on youtube makes me so happy. people that thoroughly explain every step with the why and the how is just amazing
Yeah it's hard to find quality videos like this. I subscribed instantly. Happy drumming my friend 😄
From a lady to a lady, thank you! Your technic is very useful. Great channel.
This is by far, the best lesson on basics on sticking and practice regimes. So simple and yet most practical. Very well presented. Thank you. 🙂
Thank you very much. I'm glad you're liking it.
Love the no frills, no backwards baseball cap, style here. These are the exact technique lessons my teacher taught me years ago. I was looking for a good refresher. Found it. Subscribed.
Wow this is probably the best I have seen in this topic. very clearly explained! Thank you. I can’t wait to see the traditional grip!!!!
Agreed. 1000%
This is an amazing channel. The level of detail is awesome. Thanks for enabling comments so that I could thank you for creating these thoughtful lessons!
I appreciate the support, Chris.
So good I was waiting for the sales pitch. This channel is super awesome.
I don't even play drums but I kept watching. Good video.
Yup :))

Looking forward to the upcoming practice video!
Wanted to thank you for this video and the press roll video as well. It seems like you explain things fully and don't hold back info. So glad you randomly popped up in my videos.
Very clear demonstration! Thanks a lot!
I have my first drum lesson tomorrow and I'm so glad I found this video before I get into the habit of playing any kind of technique. Otherwise I always find out about something like this years later 😄
I LOVE this video and I keep coming back to it. Thank you!
Thank you for this. I realized I was practicing control and rudiments in French grip and then when I actually wanna play, I play American grip. Now I can change it.
This is probably the best and most practical way I've seen it explained. Good job!
This was amazing!! Thank you so much for sharing and being so clear and concise on every detail and warning!!
Your lesson is spot on! You explained every challenge there is to developing finger technique and how to remedy it. I look forward to seeing more of your videos. Thank you!
Thanks a lot Maria! I have watched loads of videos to isolated my fingers but yours made the different! So easy to follow and amazingly explained! You rock!!
Informative, to the point, smart, no BS, no commercial sell, pro level. Thank you.
Just wanted to stop by again and say the adding and removing fingers exercise is SUPER helpful. I remember someone talking about this exercise on reddit. Didn't think much of it at first but wow, just been doing this two days and I'm astounded by the results. Please make more videos like these!!
I love this video, keep coming back to it and point others to it.
Thanks Maria!
This is fundamental for high end Buddy Rich level performance. Thank you so much for this. Super complex control starts here. These are the pillars for high end performance.
Amazing thank you! It really makes sense and I have loads to try now
So very thankful for this lesson here Maria!
Best finger-tec Video ever.
You puttin it down to Earth
Thank you so much👍
Maria, thanks so much for these great videos. Very helpful!
Suddenly I visually understand french grip and translate this to the kit. The flat wrist vs dangling/relaxed wrist. That genuinely made my head tilt to one side and it clicked. Time to practice this. Amazing stuff. Subbed
Great presentation, thank you!
Thanks for explaining every detail of each exercise so well !
Thank you so much for taking the time to explain finger control. Many people basically just tell ya to use your fingers off of the rebound... These exercises should definitely help my weak hand! Thanks!
Just stumbled upon this lesson. Great info on finger control, which I struggle a lot with. Subscribed
What makes this video so excellent is that you continually show the stick and finger action when you explain. thank you will practice …
This is exactly what I have been looking for. I really struggle with finger control. I can't wait to start with these exercises. Thank you
Thank You, Maria! I needed to see this and I need to practice this. Great video. A keeper for shore!
Maria kudos for keeping it so simple! Amazing work and great execution on technique! I’m sold on you…my first subscription! Thank you!
Fantastic! You covered everything in a thorough and useful approach. Many great ideas with all the finger’s being incorporated. Kudos!
This class is awesome! I play timpani / timbales drums and this was very helpful. Thanks Maria 👍🏼
I'm in year 5 of my drumming journey and thank you so much for this video. I feel like this is really gonna help!
🎉thank you for the most concise demonstration I have seen!
As a previous professional violinist this focus on technique really rings true for me. I began playing drums 4 years ago @60. Thank you so much!
I have been going through a lot of courses recently but never could have the benefits i had from the first time i watched yours , so helpful so practical .
Plz keep going , looking forward more of this .
Wow! Hands down the best finger control lesson I've ever watched! Thank you!
Great explanation! Thank you Maria!
Thank you!!!! I have been meaning to address this challenge for years and I will use this lesson to help me!!! I appreciate you!! 🥁
Awesome exercises, thanks for sharing!
Wow! Superb instruction and demonstration. Subscribed! I'm going to study and practice this diligently, reviewing often.
This video is just great! Thanks so much.
For the last 2 months, I've been wondering how to actually practice this. This is the only one that breaks downt he mechanics and how begin training it. Thank you, I really feel like my drumming will improve with thi.
I just bought a practice pad and some sticks. I've never tried drumming before so this was really informative. Thank you.
Thank you very much for these great tips! Great channel!
Thank you so much for uploading this, i have a lot to fix in the foundations of my drumming and this is so helpful
I don't have any musical instrument practice except acoustic guitar for 6 months and i always find myself watching a ton of drum videos. It looks so fun and honestly i think i really want to try. Thank you for this video because it will be awesome to practice this when i get some stix on my hands.
I am struggling with finger dexterity and control, much to learn and practice. Thanks for the lesson, it's brilliant.
Thank you for this!!! Really!!!! Helps me a LOT!!!! 🙏🙏
This is brilliant! Thank you for making this video.
Excellent, fantastic! I hardly see or find other drummers that preach hand control which is the most important technique to master
Excited to try it out! Thanks!
I never seen a Video so well done!! thanks so much, I will start to practice in this way
This video was so excellent and informative. I'm just beginning working on my finger technique and will surely follow all your advice here. Thank you so much!
This is such a great video. I can’t thank you enough for your content!
Excellent lesson and information. Thank you.❤
Thank you! Saved for later, as an amateur bass player, and MTB rider.
Seems to be useful for me too. :)
I’ve watched so many videos trying to figure out how to play double and triple strokes and all these other teachers just say “use your fingers”, “watch my fingers”, “just use finger technique”. THANK YOU for actually explaining how this magical unicorn technique is used❤❤❤
Very good instruction every drummer needs to practice
Reminds me of my first class. Beautiful memories🙏🏻Lots of practice every day🥁❤️
I love this! My teacher gave me all this stuff too. It's absolutely priceless knowledge and you deliver it in a really clear way! Pinkie is the strongest finger!
Great video. Thank you
This is an excellent lesson, so, so useful. Thanks!
I have had lessons from a city orchestra percussion leader, another guy that only put me on stick control on snare, only. I lost interest in him, I was 11. Lessons from a decent teacher from a music store, and also from a multiplatinum celebrity drummer, and maybe someone I am spacing out, then I worked in a music store with a daily visit from various pro's that would hang out, do clinics, and many drummers on a daily basis, still it was this video that finally showed and explained this technique and how to practice it. Great lesson, thank you.
Well - just excellent instruction, ideas and exercises
Thanks for the drum lesson I've been playing since the '70s and took a break for like 25 years working on the road doing sound and then now I'm getting back into it in my early '60s and this is a technique I only remember from timpani in school but you made it a lot more simpler which that makes it great so more speed more control thanks I just ran across your channel a few months ago really enjoy the in-depth teaching thank you very much
Finger control is awesome. I was fortunate enough to sit under Preston Thomas's exceptional teaching, in college, after to many years of not using finger control.
WOW! I really appreciate your class, because with a few minutes for a few days I have considerably improved my way of playing, because I see that it is not the use of the arm/wrist but the fingers.
Your class is a treasure for us beginners!
And I am already one more subscriber to your channel.
Until the next class.
Thank you very much.
Thank you so much for this video!!
Just a quick note to say Thank you so much for this video. I am returning to drumming in my late 50's after trying in vain to get past the basic rudiments back in Highschool. I vividly remember my music teacher passing me cause I could fake my way (with wrist control) through the tests. He said, you're doing it wrong, but I'll pass you anyway. I never understood how to use finger control until now. Also loving the upside down stick trick to help build/train the muscles. Thank you again and I'm looking forward to checking out your other videos. All the best. paradiddle paradiddle paradiddle paradiddle...... 🙂
I'm just learning, at 57, so am also very pleased to have come across your channel. I'm now a subscriber with you as my new teacher - thank you 😉
Thank you so much, Maria. As others are saying, this video is an eye-opener and so different from the other drum channels in the world. So much details so easy to understand. All we need to do now is practice.................... which probably is the hardest part. Thank you from the far east (Tokyo).
Wow! Totally what I need to learn and teach my brain to coordinate. Can't wait to get the feel for it, esp to bring my left hand into more confidence. Great lesson! (btw, I was the first girl drummer in Baltimore County schools at 10 years old - back in 1970. Just got an electric set - due to space limitations - and loving it!) I will be watching EVERY one of your lessons!
Great Video! So well explained and simple technique. Will practice this for the next week and see how much it helps. Thx!
Another great lesson! Thank you so much for doing these! Looking forward to the traditional grip exercise.
Thanks Greg, this is good inspiration to get started on it.
I learned why I was having trouble with traditional grip in 3 minutes from Maria that I did not learn in 3 days of various other videos. Wow! So these are the fundamental mechanics essential to quicker progress? My left hand says, "absolutely." Maria, you're awesome!
Thank you SO much! This was eye-opening for me, and really helpful. Just started learning to play drums at age 56, gah, appreciate your taking the time to go through all the techniques.
Been playing for years, but this video has made my stick work SO much cleaner in just a few weeks. Thanks!
Wow! I could really see what you were doing. I’m looking forward to doing these exercises.
I’m just starting with drum lessons at age 60 and was already noticing how I could only go so fast, using my wrists.
Maybe these exercises will keep me from getting arthritic, too.
The things you worry about as you age…
Thank you much!!
Pretty awesome lesson, thank you...
This is awesome exercise. Thank you
Amazing!!! This is what I really need right now because I’ve been playing only 2 weeks, I definitely need to practice my fingers control and your video is just a gift for me! Thank you so much, Maria 🙏🏻❤️
This is great detail. I'm working with it now. I studied with a finger control teacher (Freddy Gruber) so much was familiar, but you laid it out. But, like others, I could have used this video 50 years ago.
I have to admit I'll be using the pinky fulcrum next time out. Just to freak out some band mates.
This was a very good demonstration. Thank you.
Very good instruction and demonstration- Thank you
I stumbled across this vid after following the RUclips recommendation rabbit-hole... I confess that as a drummer of several decades, my first instinct was that I *didn't* like the cold clinical approach of this video. However, after watching it for another minute, I came to appreciate your approach here; it's clinical but very useful/applicable.
Some of this utility comes through in watching you accidentally click your sticks. There's no (little?) editing being done to clean things up; it's a *practical* lesson. There's a ton of detail about how to practice, both in what is presented intentionally and some in what's not.
Kudos! This is super helpful.
I have the same pad as yours and had the exact orange like discoloration. All you need is an orbital sander with 220 grit and move in circular motion all the time. It will go back to the creme color when new. Mine is a second hand, from the year 2000. Lately I did what I recommended you and looks in great condition. 👍🏻
Outright brilliant! Thank you very much.
Oh my goodness, this is a great class! 😃 I'm a complete beginner... only 3 days into learning! Thank you so much for sharing your knowledge! I will practice this a lot because I haven't figured out how to keep my hand from traveling up the stick; my guess is I'm not holding the thumb/finger pivot point secure enough.
Thanks so much, so useful.
