Hi Johnny, Thank you. I like the emphasis on the 12 equal pulses instead of thinking in term of beats and subdivisions. Hi, this rhythm is knowned as Afro Cuban 6/8 because of the way the peoples playing it used to count the music. But in fact it's 4/4, 6/8, 12/8... whatever you want. It just depends on the context, the way you want to write it, and the way ou want to count it. But it's all subjective. The absolute fact is that you need 12 "'pulses" to complete the pattern. Don't worry about that too much.
I cant help but count it as 4/4 triplets. 1(and uh)+a 2+a 3+a 4+a or "tri-pal-let" 4 x over.. Is it tradtitionally a fast 123456,223456 that's being counted? If you get this id appreciate it. Ive played many compound tribal rhythm meters but I guess never occurred to me the more jazz oriented 6/8 works as well
Hi Ned, You really should count it like you feel it. Even in the same band, different musicians like to count and feel the same song differently. So in the end it really doesn't matter much. At least it's my opinion :)

Hi P.naik, the visual is 100% accurate, but on some computer or configuration sometimes the audio is out of sync, maybe the 60fps is not well supported in your configuration.
Hi Hatchet_Jack DrumHack, in this kind of 12 pulses rhythms, you can play the "12/8 Clave" which is : XoXoXooXoXoo You can have fun rotating this Clave and you've got 12 possibilities, the more useful ones are often the five with a stroke on the first beat, but the 7 others are great too to add complexity as the first beat is silent.
Drumset Fundamentals ...Thanks for Your Reply! Are you saying this is Played over a “12/8 CLAVE” ? With your “X o” chart, i am interpreting that this is the SAME as a 3-2 Son Clave, Correct? I have heard this cymbal Pattern played ACCENTING the Second Stroke of Both Double Strokes that occur on the Bell. > > > > > II: XoXoxXoXoXox :II . Your High Tom “helps” me hear that in your Example. With your High Tom, I am hearing a 3-2 Rumba Clave: XoXooXoXoXoo. That Audibly “Fits” Under /Inherently in Your Bembe. So I guess I’m disagreeing (not hearing) Your “12/8 Clave” Answer. DF Wrote “ XoXoXooXoXoo “. That goes AGAINST your High Tom stroke. A. Dear DF, are You SURE the 12/8 Clave Pattern you sent me is the Correct Answer? B. Who or Where is your Your Source for your Answers? If it’s Conversations in Clave by Horacio Hernandez, He is Wrong with some of his Terminology. I Love Him as a Player, But there are Mistakes in His Book. He told me as much when he signed my Copy of his Book at PASIC a few years ago.
Hi Hatchet, I don't think we disagree, Rhumba Clave & Son Clave are not 12 pulses rhythm. So technicaly if you play any of them over a Bembe, you'll go over the bar etc... The closest rhythm in 12 pulses to a clave is the one we talk about. Then there's 12 rotations possible to play it. (Your answer is just one of them too). I was not talking about particular rules or tradition when i said that this rhythm can fit. There's surely a "rotation" more suited to sound traditional. My point was that all 12 rotations of this "12/8 Clave" can give very interesting musical explorations over somebody playing the Bembé. This "12/8 Clave" Rhythm got some very strong properties even when rotated, it's a very good candidate for a guitar line, bass or anything over this rhythm. I think the confusion was due to the name, Rhumba Clave & Son Clave are not appropriate names for a 12 pulse Clave.
Hi David, i'll try my best to continue this video series, but unfortunately the new monetization of RUclips consider my channel as a spamming channel. Consequently i didn't get any revenue anymore from my channel which require a lot of time and work after my day job. So i have to figure out new solutions to keep sharing and help peoples practicing.
That's a shame. The visualization is highly helpful. I wish I had stumbled upon your channel when I was learning to play Songo years ago. I feel like I could learn any style this way!
Hello, the time signature is not an "absolute truth"; you can write a rhythm using a different time signature. Bembé is often referred to as an "Afro-Cuban 6/8" rhythm, that's all.
Hi Nenad, initialy i planned a lot of grooves, but RUclips new monetization system, just turn me off. I spend a LOT of time on this channel and now they demonetized me. With my musical band, family and day job, i can't afford to put as much time as i did with 0 revenus. I hope you understand. Maybe in the future i will upload some more if i have time to spare but i can't garantee it. RUclips new rules just suck.
Hi, thank you. No it's not. You got the reference pulsation at the top left. So the 12 pulses rate is 360 BPM, But the way we use to think about this type of rhythm is a 4/4 pulse subdivided in ternary which mean the main pulse is mainly thinked as 3 time slower. so 120 BPM.
Hi Sebastian, No i don't have a tutorial, To sync everything i did a lot of scripting, so i can change the BPM without reworking everything. It's not that hard if you do some research on After Effects Expressions, you can start by programming simple movements etc...
@@DrumsetFundamentals Thanks man, check my result: ruclips.net/video/iB-xi_MbFB8/видео.html I only have Premiere Pro so I used Algodoo to program the movement. Let me know... Is not perfect was difficult to sync.
if you play a chromatic scale ascending but only accented the Ride cymbal bell pattern you'll get a major scale and same thing descending, phrygian. just a funny coincidence i thought
Hi, it's something that is also mentionned in the Toussaint book. I don't think it's a coincidence at all. In one case it's about how to optimize notes and silences, and in the other it's about frequencies used and not used. it's kind of the same problem really, with the same type of mathematical answer.
Hey there, just love this drum groove, awesome job here ! Do you think that I could buy/use this one on a short video ? I'm currently experimenting some kinds of "Carlos Santana grooves" on the bass and this rythm pattern fits perfectly ! I'd obsiously mention and link your channel with it ! @@DrumsetFundamentals Thanks for the comment !! Yeah i know, i must get myself some proper recording gear, i've been doing it this way for many years already but i'm getting truly annoyed by the fact that my sound quality is sh*t ...! Anyway, great idea on buying a bass !! It'll complete your rhythm section perspectives ;) Good luck on your way through practice !
Hi Stanley. I think the best way to figure out how a circle sounds like, is to count the "dots" and play the written strokes. Start slow. Then you can do the same for each limb until you got a better understand of the coordination and interactions between the 4 patterns.
Hi Kurt, I never indicate 4/4 or any time signature. A rhythm can be expressed in any time signature, Some just make no sense. This rhythm is in 4/4, 6/8, 12/8, 12/4, 3/4 whatever you like.
I have waited all my life for an instructional video without somebody talking at the audience. Bravo.

With your High Tom, I am hearing a 3-2 Rumba Clave:
XoXooXoXoXoo. That Audibly “Fits” Under /Inherently in Your Bembe.
So I guess I’m disagreeing (not hearing) Your “12/8 Clave” Answer.
DF Wrote
“ XoXoXooXoXoo “. That goes AGAINST your High Tom stroke.
A. Dear DF, are You SURE the 12/8 Clave Pattern you sent me is the Correct Answer?
B. Who or Where is your Your Source for your Answers? If it’s
Conversations in Clave by Horacio Hernandez, He is Wrong with some of his Terminology.
👍👍
Fantastic method...One question, is this pattern useful or "playable" on "Afro Blues" (santamaria)?
Hi Guillaume, yeah it's perfectly playable on Afro Blues ! Thank you for your comment !
Thank you for answering..it's very kind of you...I'm gonna play this in my jazz school workshop!
Have you considered creating a rhythm wheel drum machine
More grooves please!
This rhytm is in 4 time so in 12/8..no?
why à 6/8 ?
Thanks
Hello, the time signature is not an "absolute truth"; you can write a rhythm using a different time signature. Bembé is often referred to as an "Afro-Cuban 6/8" rhythm, that's all.
@@DrumsetFundamentals ok!! Tanks.. your vidéos are very cool to understand rythms
good
Do you have any more of these, apart from seven grooves listed here? If yes, how can I obtain them?
Hi Nenad, initialy i planned a lot of grooves, but RUclips new monetization system, just turn me off. I spend a LOT of time on this channel and now they demonetized me. With my musical band, family and day job, i can't afford to put as much time as i did with 0 revenus. I hope you understand. Maybe in the future i will upload some more if i have time to spare but i can't garantee it. RUclips new rules just suck.
Did you make this with video editing or a dedicated software? Would be interested in purchasing. Thanks in advance.
Great groove!! But is faster than 120, isn´t it?
Hi, thank you. No it's not. You got the reference pulsation at the top left. So the 12 pulses rate is 360 BPM, But the way we use to think about this type of rhythm is a 4/4 pulse subdivided in ternary which mean the main pulse is mainly thinked as 3 time slower. so 120 BPM.
Excelent!! Thank you very much!
Hi I want to know how you make this animation, and which program do you use?
Hi Sebastian, you can just read the description.
@@DrumsetFundamentals yes thank you, do you have any tutorial on that? It is awesome how you sync everything
Hi Sebastian, very cool, and you did it fast ! congratulations, well done !
if you play a chromatic scale ascending but only accented the Ride cymbal bell pattern you'll get a major scale
and same thing descending, phrygian. just a funny coincidence i thought
Hi, it's something that is also mentionned in the Toussaint book. I don't think it's a coincidence at all. In one case it's about how to optimize notes and silences, and in the other it's about frequencies used and not used. it's kind of the same problem really, with the same type of mathematical answer.
if every melody played in 12 edo can be converted to 19 edo, then the same can be said with 12/8 to 19/8 too! @@DrumsetFundamentals
Would it be ok to use this in a song?
Hi RobRevert, It's ok, just credit it.
Kumasi dude
hi i cannot recognize the 6-8 ,
how do i count the 6 here?
Hi, Every two dots.
the bass drum? Like one round = 1 count?
Hi Evert, theres 12 'dots' by cycle. If you want to count the rhythm in 6, Count every 2 dots. If you want to count in 4, count every 3 dots etc...
wow Thanks! It is not immediatly hearable but it's there. Amazing how all these different countings fit togheter
this one is so hard
Yeah
I would like to hear this with the hi hat replaced with a wood block
Hey there, just love this drum groove, awesome job here ! Do you think that I could buy/use this one on a short video ? I'm currently experimenting some kinds of "Carlos Santana grooves" on the bass and this rythm pattern fits perfectly ! I'd obsiously mention and link your channel with it ! (btw, that'd be on instagram). Thanks for letting me know what you think !
Cheers !
Hi Lilian, that's cool for me, do it ! Please send me the link, i would love to see the result !
@@DrumsetFundamentals Thank you so much ! Here's the link : instagram.com/p/CBvynWHohJY/?igshid=m5051l84gozj Sorry for the sound quality btw, i can only record with my phone...! Hope you'll like it !
Hey, very good bassline and groove ! The sound quality is not great but we can still feel the vibe ! By the way i just decided to purchase a bass to learn it a bit better. Thank you for the link !
Thank you, i wish you all the best on your musical journey too !
I suggest you break down each segment of the beat and play them for two minutes each
Hi Stanley. I think the best way to figure out how a circle sounds like, is to count the "dots" and play the written strokes. Start slow. Then you can do the same for each limb until you got a better understand of the coordination and interactions between the 4 patterns.
nice app
The wild part is if you can tune out parts of the beats, the pattern seems to shift
Partiture no?
I like it but maybe bc im a former saxophonist i prefer a normal part.
My keyboardist send me that link last day.still i trying 😂
Poly folks
why says 6/8 it seems 4/4
Hi Kurt, I never indicate 4/4 or any time signature. A rhythm can be expressed in any time signature, Some just make no sense. This rhythm is in 4/4, 6/8, 12/8, 12/4, 3/4 whatever you like.
