Bossa Nova (Hi-hat) - Drum Groove

- This is the standard Bossa Nova drum pattern. It's presented using the clock or rhythm wheel method to facilitate the understanding of what is played by each limb. This is also very useful in understanding what different grooves have in common or not.
I designed the Groove series to be a complementary approach to traditional musical notation. It presents some advantages in understanding the structure of repetitive rhythms. The geometric shape of the rhythm is immediately visible and its properties are easily recognized.
My goal with this series was to create a learning tool where the musician can spend more time practicing the rhythm and less time trying to figure out what to play.
To create this video series, I'm using After Effects for all the animations and Ableton Live to record, sequence, and process the drum sounds.

If you want to learn more about the usefulness of this representation, there's a great book by Godfried T. Toussaint called "The Geometry of Musical Rhythm".
Ive never seen this diagram. I really like it, very simple to understand
Tvz😠😣😈😆😇😐🎆🎆😉🎆😀🎆🎆😐😐🎋📘😃😐
And to remember !
Agreed. I’m a music therapist, working with children with autism. They are visual learners and this illustrates the beat so well. Thanks!
Yesss
What is this called?
This is the best visualization of drums I have ever seen in my life.
Yeah this is unparalleled in it's ability to illustrate the rhythms of each component.
After trying to learn this from videos and teachers for a month, this has been the most successful thing after 1 day.
Hi Jeremy, that's amazing, but it will not replace a teacher obviously :) ! i'm very happy it helps you !
That doesn't suprise me Jeremy C. Sometimes people can over complicate these things. I will be covering world rythms also and actually find these videos the most helpful too. Simple but extremely effective. Delighted you got it down buddy!
Hi Whelan, i will keep an eye on your channel ! i didn't know it, i'm always interested when people try to simplify things ;)
Please do. I've gone ahead and subscribed to your channel. Maybe you can do the same and that way we can keep in touch. Absolutely and it's always good to trade useful tips and information. Keep doing what you do and you will aid a lot of people. Chat soon 😀
I did subscribe, i'll look at your content this week and let you know what i think ! thank you !
God bless the person that created this! Learned it in 10min! My drum teacher never even came close...
Thank you Chris !!
Please tell me how you were able to coordinate the cross stick and bass drum!
@@gpbr-uk it just takes time. Limb separation
@@gpbr-ukOnly the first 2 double-kick has the snare hitting together. First double-kick, snare hits on the second kick and the second double-kick, snare hits on the first kick, the rest is separate. Not sure I sentenced it clearly but yeah just do it slowly and one by one
@@gpbr-uk try to do both separately while listening to the video sound than feel the beats and feel when they go together and when not... Because explaining and understanding intellectually is hard to the body reproduce... But if it helps you the bass drum starts on 1, than beats every A and 1 if you subdivde:
"1" e and "A" - "1" e and "A" - "1" e and "A" - "1" e and "A" :|
The sticks goes on
"1"e and a - 1 e and "A" - 1 e "AND" a - 1 e "AND" a - 1 "E" and a :|
I don't even play the drums but I had an amazing time trying to coordinate on my kitchen table. I got it after about 15 mins. I have new respect for drummers!
Ahah ! that's great if you did it in 15 minutes ! you may think about getting a drumset ;)
Thanks for the encouragement! :)
@@4c00h get one?
If you got this in 15 min, you should definitely buy a drum set dude
Totally addictive to watch. Playing the instrumen I do, I am pretty much anything but a drummer, but it’s captivated me.
This is the greatest teaching tool I have ever seen. God bless this person.
Woah, first time seeing this kind of visual. Makes it easier
Feel the power of Brazilian Music! Thank you for share this groove, I used in my acoustic guitar class!
Wanna learn how to play Bassa Nova and I don’t regret clicking this video at all! Learn it in 2 3 mins and play it til the end, easy to understand! Thx for this!
Came here to use as backing track, i instantly understood the drum pattern with the representation, big thanks
This is best visual tool I've ever seen, hands down.
Nothing else, particularly in linear format, comes close.
This is pretty mind blowing. 😮. Thank you. This effects the mind more than most might realise. Love it!!
this gives me nostalgia from 2 different games at once and I love it
Agree with everyone. You reinvented a very lovely wheel. As a guitar player and singer it’s great get these ritmões solid. Thanks
A video that's very nicely done. Thanks for posting it.
I'm and oldie :D ... but I feel the circular rhythm displays are often most useful for folks who are not familiar with the 'dots'n'lines' notation. I found I was still counting out loud (with the video set at half-speed): ONE-and-two-AND-three-and-FOUR-and... one-and-TWO-and-three-AND-four-and...
I suggest it might be handy to include a conventional 'rhythm line' (with the rests and so on) that's synchronized with the circle, if you can do it (depending on who your audience is for the video). Having both notations would likely be helpful when describing claves, rhumbas, etc.
This has changed my game, thank you.
Circles are tabs for drummers. Best notation form ever! I love it
A simple yet comprehensive method of instruction. Fantastic! Thank you!!
god bless this channel
ah ah ! thank you ! :)
amen
Jamas había visto esta forma de graficarlo, así es muchísimo mas fácil entenderlo y aplicarlo, muchísimas gracias desde Chile!
This is fantastic piece of the puzzle. This combined w counting and drum notation....i finally got it around 1am after practicing much of the day. Looking forward to how well it gels overnight 😂
I learned to play the beat after the first 2 days thanks to you!! 🔥🔥
This is really helpful because as an 11 year old my laying drums it is really hard to understand playing bossa nova with notes so this helped me practice, now I can freestyle bossa nova with ease yhanks
that kind of diagram is so useful to not only learn a rhythm but also to understand it, thanks so much for this
This is the best resource I have found. Took me an hour to learn it, after many years of trying and failing.
That's amazing !! i'm glad it was so useful to you !
this is really nice, thank you! great for all musicians too not just drummers. I'm a guitarist and this helped a great deal. bossa nova felt a little elusive before this.
Best notation ever. Thanks for this.
Not just useful for drummers. This has helped me practice bass. Thank you :)
Спустя 1 неделю- получилось))
Thank you, after 1 week’s- complete))
That's great ! have a lot of fun now !
This visualization was what made the beat click for me!! Thank you so much
Wow , 1/2 hour im pretty close ! Ty, the visual just explains it in my tiny bean brain
Fantastic! I've never seen a beat visualized like this before. Wow.
Very awesome diagram ! Better than notes !👍
This format is essentially perfect.
Exactly what i was lookin for. Subbed!
Awesome channel! I love the way you visually break down the beat. It's the first time I see this approach and It's really helpful. Thank you.
Im a guitarist. You drummers are insane
took me 6min to learn this:O
im practicing bass to these, they are amazing thank-you!!
using a circle and shapes is quite unique...to me anyway. Seems logical and natural. Genius
Great, exactly what I was looking for. I even draw the cross-stick-circle on my own on a paper, but I took me quite a while 🙈 So finding this was like YEAHHHH
These diagrams are damn brilliant
this is a 10/10 quality video, great visuals very helpful, and great sounding beat very enjoyable to play along to! Thanks for sharing!
Hi Nicolai, thank you very much, i put a lot of effort into this serie, so it can be both a learning tool and a play-along drumtrack for musicians, i'm glad you find it useful ! :)
太好了 希望多出类似的视频。超喜欢 可以好好学习了🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉
God bless you, Learned it in 5min!
Parfait, il faut bosser quoi... Merci, finalement ils vont peut-être me garder dans mon groupe de jazz.
Brilliant illustration!
simply awesome representation - thank you!
Exactly what I needed to practice guitar to thank you
Took me 30 seconds to figure it out again. Thanks for the fresh up. Needed it.
図形で考えるとフレーズ構成に違った角度からアプローチができておもしろいですね。
This is just A.M.A.Z.I.N.G! Thank you so much for publishing these didactically great drumset series. It's super helpful, you clarified my confusion in a sec 👍🏼. Will you do also videos for Samba, Cha Cha, Rumba,, Salsa... ? 🙏🏽
Hi myfabal, i'll do more latin grooves, i'm finishing a "big" project for the moment, after that i'll have more time for my youtube channel, and do more grooves, thank you !
@@DrumsetFundamentals 🙏🏽 Great! Looking forward to that :). Lot's of success for your «big» project 💪🏼

Normal: Bossa Nova
1.75: Samba
Damn, you're right :0
very useful diagram. i also found it easier to mentally split the 3/2 as two different phrases.
Awesome diagram...makes it so easy to visualize! Thanks so much for creating this... you gained one more subscriber!
Just realized how well bossa Nova and nu metal mix
Sometimes lyrics and melodies get in the way. This is so peaceful. You just got a sub.
i learned this in just one day now i just gotta add the hi hat :)
Such a fun beat. I had to come back to remember all parts. I forgot the bass beat
I’ve playing drums for few years and i thought i was alrdy good but damn it was so hard at start as a metal/rock drummer, but this is very good pattern for improving better technique and indepence, and of course learning new genre
This has been extremely helpful. Learned it in less than a day.
Hi abshertaylor, Thank you for your comment, this is great !! I hope it'll open some new musical landscapes to your playing !
The visuals help me so much.
this was so awesome. it really helped me dial it in and learn the beat with my body!
This video style and idea is amazing, thank you very much
Thank you Mister Stereo, i'm working on a lot new material, but i need to solve some minor issue with the programming. I'm glad you liked it
simple but wonderful music!!
Thank you Andrei !
Thank you so much DF !!! Im so happy with this and I REALLY LIKE IT !!!
Very helpful & UNIQUE !
Ooooh I finally got it. Lol. Those wheels helped me a lot. Thanks
Great! Love the visualisations of how the groove is constructed. Good job👍
wow this is a very helpful vid, thank you. Diagram is a great idea and very easy to follow!
could you please use this diagram to show some polyrythm drum beats
It is hypnotizing!!!
Yes, I got this better even though I learned it 60 years ago by an old drumming teacher.
Wow this is rlly amazing! finally teehe i found it xD
It was really helpful, thanks!
Hey mate, that's awesome, I agree with the comments below that this visualization of the beat is revolutionary. Is there an app for this? How did you do that?
Yes, most excellent!! 🙏
Thank you! Very helpful!
This is taking me some time. Seems so simple but really screwing with me lol
This method is fab
I had never thought about it
A tremendous help.
I couldn't count this right if my life depended on it, but to see it? Wonderful...
Batidas do coração 💓
Wow! Maka ma brain so happy.
This is amazing! Thank you! :-D
Thanks for share! ❤❤❤
Broooo the hardes thing is that I can’t get the bass drum part, like everytime I do it and is start to do the hi hat then my leg starts spazzing just like the high hat
me too, after a WHOLE 15 min trying.
Drumming SHOULD be easier...right?
LOL
@Kaden N:
Try leaving the bass part out untill you are comfortable with the hi hat and rim shot part. Keep that going then try to mouth (mimick it verbally) the bass part in for a few minutes. Then while still playing just hat and rim, see if you can sneek in Kick over the mouthing part. If that does not work after 4 or 5 attempts, stop walk away for at least 5 mins. Then listen to the arrangement for 3 to 5 mins. Do not attempt to play it in this time frame just listen. Then take one more small break.
Come back to kit sit down and listen while mouthing out part simultaneously for 3 mins. You will now continue mouthing the part as you attempt to play it.
I was taught this way and was told, if you can mouth it, you can play it. Good luck! Let me know when you start playing it.
@@chezchezchezchez See the comment I left for Kaden to try.
Follow it exactly how I instructed, you should be able to play it if you follow it as I explained it. Good luck!
Muchas gracias lo aprendí súper rápido
Muy muy bueno y gracias saludos 🇨🇱
I'm so bad at this
but this diagram is just too good to be true
Need 10-hour version!
Wow love the diagram!!!!!!
Excelente grafico explicativo! Gracias
This is amazing....thank you!
nice visual. different way of thinking music and spacing between notes.
Great, Like a TAB for guitar, really good idea!
