      I really appreciate the feedback! There are tons of times I’ve wanted to make short videos about those things to showcase some things that may generally not be shown in other videos but if there’s interest in it (and I’m seeing that there is) then I’ll definitely do it. I really appreciate the suggestion because I’m always trying to make the best content and that’s why I put so much work into it but I’m glad to know that small showcases like that are also of interest.

    Electronics are crazy expensive can be 20 to 30 percent more expensive unless its a Chinese brand phone etc you can't get in the US, Then it might be affordable or less than US prices. In Ecuador and Colombia, I can't believe the prices of clothes washer/dryer. They can be over $1000 USD in some cases for things back home that would be $300 to $500

    • @GMAceM
      @GMAceM  2 года назад +3

      The price difference is absolutely nuts. Personally in order to have a TV and air conditioner I had to buy brands that I’m not even 100% sure where they’re from. Part of me would understand the price jump if people were earning American or more salaries but that’s absolutely not the case and I’m really surprised sometimes with how much some people are willing to sacrifice to have these things. For example some friends in order to have a car they’ll pay it off using credit but that’s like 5+ years they’re getting themselves into and even then those monthly payments aren’t cheap. Thanks for watching! 👏🏼

      Import duty, having to balance costs with how many go missing en route, etc. Transport costs to different places ... lots of reasons. Australia was like that in the 1980s, and anything American was so heavily taxed by the gov't ... books by 100% to keep the British ways current by making American methods ... the enemy. LOL Until Aussies could fly to LA and go shopping. Then they LOVED the USA. 🤣🤣

And so glad you explained the potato chips and helmet; I'm new here and was a bit confused. haha The only issue for me is all the sound effects and screen text that flashed so fast it was unreadable unless I paused, and then I had to reverse again to listen to you. Hello! Thank you so much, I’m glad you enjoyed it!
      I like adding things to my background that resemble Easter eggs, I feel it makes the experience more fun and it certainly helps when explaining something, the chips are definitely a great example of that. I even made a community post foreshadowing what the video was going to be about which made it like a “can you guess what the video is about” kind of situation. As for the text I do admit that I went a bit overboard with it this time, but that’s because there was so much I had to remove in the process of editing I just hoped that anyone who was curious enough or wanted more details would go back and check the text out. And the sound effects I always feel help enhance the experience and show a bit of who the person behind the video/edits is, even if they were frequent I hope they helped make the video more entertaining to watch! :)
      Thanks a ton for watching and I hope you enjoy the rest of the content and this community! 👏🏼

    Believe it or not Ecuador has the highest minimum wage in Latinamerica, so you need to put it in context. Loved your love for Ecuadorian food! It must also be noted that Portoviejo is not one of the main cities, hence the lack of things to do for entertainment and the streets state in the past, it should never be the case but it's to like all the country is like that. I agree with you on the lack of respect for police, that's sad. The reason tech costs more is because of absurd high taxes to protect the national products, it's not that the vendors take advantage of you. It's completely normal that you can't find an american snack, or American sports, it's like wanting to play ecuavolley in the States! haha.

      Hey there, appreciate for the feedback!
      I focused so much on Ecuador and comparing it to the states that I didn’t think to compare to the rest of Latin America 🥲
      It makes me sad that the capital of Manabi wouldn’t be considered a main city, like if I hear “this is the capital of X” then I’d instantly assume there’s a ton to do, but here’s hoping it keeps getting better.
      Oh boy the police, just heard today a policeman got robbed in Guayaquil, like what? 😩
      True, but I saw someone complaining the other day on a tech item because it was marked up almost double the price, like I understand wanting to make money but let’s not exaggerate lol
      Hahahaha but I miss my American snacks and sports, and the few times I find them believe me I enjoy them to the fullest

    I mean… to be fair, you live in a provincial town. Many of the things you mentioned are nothing like that in Quito, Guayaquil or Cuenca… even a city like Ambato, which is surprisingly not small and has some very interesting areas. The culture shock is much bigger if you’re in a town like portoviejo.

    • @GMAceM
      @GMAceM  Год назад +1

      Totally agree, I have no doubt in my mind that my viewpoints would’ve included other shocks had I stayed in different cities. I spent time in Guayaquil and a smaller amount of time in Machala when I arrived so I have an idea of how they were at the time, and with all the news I see and hear from friends and family living in Guayaquil and other parts of the country, even now I’d still find shocks. But that’s the beauty of a video like this and the opinion of each individual, it’s not going to be the same for everyone and everyone’s opinion/point of view is valuable because it gives anyone coming more insight into things they otherwise wouldn’t have known.
      Thanks for watching! 👏🏼

    You left out customs for items shipped to Ecuador. I have the same issue in Ukraine. I have to keep the total cost of the item PLUS its shipping to UNDER 100 USD or I get slammed with absurd customs duties and fees. Your mention of "fees" in the Ed System is the same here, low wages the same amounts, and gov't jobs are hard to get b/c that is where most of the corruption is. Even locals with MBA's earned in the West cannot get gov't jobs here. Tech is overpriced but even going into the EU does not help. Same thing. So from what you have described to me there would be no real surprises. Oh I forgot the cops aren't much better here. Some are darn good but most I avoid like the plague and I was a Deputy Sheriff in the U.S. Enjoy your vids. Keep up the good work.

      Hello! Thank you for your comment.
      I do agree, there are places that are much better than others but I can never not highlight the things that have happened to me as well as others because they are the experiences that we have truly had. In other words if the opposite narrative were told by someone living in a place that you mentioned, then people coming would have no idea of the hardships they could come to experience as well. Every story needs to be told in order to get a full understanding of the situation. One day I do plan on hitting up places that are “promised lands” as I’ve come to call them so that I can also give their half of the story. I will take precautions of course no matter what because that’s just something that I feel should always be done. All that being said, some things have changed (slightly) where I live while others not so much.
      As for the situation with the project and meet up, it sounds interesting so if possible I’d like it if you could send me more information about that through my business email which is in the about section of my RUclips channel. I always like to have the maximum amount of information before agreeing to anything.
      Once again I appreciate your comment and thanks for watching! 👏🏼

    If you are bringing children check out what the OECD says about the Ecuadorian system. The words are good, but ... the university in the city I live in ranks 7,700+. They pump out people with degrees that "sound" impressive. He's giving you an honest "hint" about what the education system is REALLY like. Arithmetic can be difficult for people with degrees, like dentistry. Tricky concept.
    Do not expect people to really help you with the language. It is not like Spain where the gov't has classes for all ages available in even small towns for really cheap prices to help foreigners of all ages learn. You are not going to find someone to help you out unless you spend your time with other foreigners. The locals might think they are helping you and then they get bored with it and leave you to finish the thing you don't know how to do. Different countries, different ways of doing things.
    I live across the street from a motorcycle cop ... everything he says is true.
    I live in the city said to be the centre of music and culture in Ecuador. Good luck with that. It's like the education system, and ...
    One of the things I knew before I came to Ecuador is where to find Ace and his honest take of life in Ecuador.
    There is NO civic mail delivery. Do NOT expect to get any snail mail, it doesn't exist and never has. Couriers ... 🤣🤣🤣🤣It will cost you US$100 to have a single document, a piece of paper, courier with DHL from the USA. IF it arrives.
    IF you can get a credit card with a bank then IF you use that card to purchase something it can be sent to a PO Box in FL and the bank will have it brought into Ecuador ... for a price relative to size and weight, on top of whatever S&H you have paid in the USA ... It's not straightforward to use couriers within the country either.
    Before I came here I would have listened to Ace and thought, oh yeah, that doesn't seem like such a big deal ... The cumulative effect of these things is ... more than you can likely imagine, but if you come here, you won't have to wonder if you have lost your marbles, you can just listen to what Ace is saying and no it is NOT your imagination and it is not going to change any time soon.
    I like this guy, he is not trying to kowtow (suck up) to the locals here, he is being honest. I wish he had been vlogging when I was listening to the crap some others put out there.

      Hello Christopher, thanks for your questions!
      In terms of gyms, if Cuenca is anything like Portoviejo then they’re not that expensive. Over here you can get a membership at a decent gym for about $30-40 a month or $1.50-$2.00 a day. If I had to speculate how much that would be in a city like Cuenca I could imagine it being maybe $50-80 a month. Either way I’ll look into it and make a video on the topic. When it comes to food there’s a lot to look at but markets definitely sell it cheap and fresh. I feel that it should all definitely be manageable at $1640 a month with a frugal lifestyle but I will be making a more detailed cost of living video soon so maybe that could give you a better idea or you can also check out the previous one I made. :)

    • @GMAceM
      @GMAceM  Год назад

      Hello Laila, thank you for your question!
      At the time that I had made that video, yes the mailing system didn’t work. At the time it had gone under due to being underfunded (or so that’s what was known). I also tried not to long ago to get some documents/mail from google and had been waiting for months (since January) and nothing arrived.
      Currently it seems to be up and running again though I think it’s in the hands of the private company “Servientrega” but I can’t 100% confirm that. What I did try to do to further investigate is go onto the official site but it seems to be outdated and a link that needed to be filled out to be able to send things was unavailable (it timed out). I tried to do further investigations and the possibility to send items from another country to Ecuador does seem to be possible but the “official” means seem to say that that service is for Ecuadorians living outside the country and even then they have to register online and go through a process. That leads me to believe that if you want to send it as a foreigner you have to use a private delivery company and most likely go through a courier service, which I find to be easier anyways.
      And even easier than that is having someone bring it over although depending on what you’d like brought over the price will vary.

      Hello Kent! Sorry for the late reply but appreciate the feedback.
      Honestly when I made the video I was playing around a lot with the movement and such of text, short form content and the YT tips I’d watched seemed to point to faster moving things but recently I’ve been getting more of the hang of it and limiting extreme movements or text that flies by too quickly.
      Either way if you ever have any more feedback I’m glad to hear/read it and thanks for watching! 👏🏼

      Thank you for your question!
      To be honest there isn’t really a sort of “college” here, there’s just “Universities”. I’ve been told there is a difference in places like the United States between the two. But if that’s what you’re looking for then yes, public Universities are free for Ecuadorians and even for people who aren’t from Ecuador. If you have any other doubts or questions let me know.

    Actually Ecuadors math is more advanced than what it is in the United States. My two Cousins came from Ecuador and when they started school in the United States they were promoted to a higher grade because the Math in the United States is behind by a mile.

      ... the United States, or Florida? I was shocked to see people pulling out calculators to work out a 15% tip, to the penny. Not good at arithmetic and not good at the concept of a gratuity.
      I had a high school educated adult here give me a bill to repay. The three tiny objects added to $3.00, exactly. I was surprised to see the total was $11.98. I wish I could make this up. I could say the person was trying to cheat me, but I suspect he was cheated by the vendor. I also have contact with many people university educated who take time to add things like $2 + $2 + $5 + $5 to get $14... second year architecture, family owns a store ... Another kid is in 5th year architecture. I think it goes downhill were addition is concerned. Avoid studying architecture? Probably not.

I just always talk about the experiences I’ve lived through because that’s my point of comparison, it’s a good way to let everyone know what I lived through and what to possibly expect! dude. the temp is very dependent on the altitude. The condition of streets of five years ago is irrelevant. The educational system which you experienced many years ago is also irrelevant. Also, at least in the USA, failing students continue to be processed thru the system. Re wages, your show is viewed primarily by folks who already have their money/savings and do not depend on working for Ecuadorean companies or who work remotely; the disparity between EC wages and foreign income is a main attractant to many expats/immigrants. The best part of your show is the "I was lied to" comment - revealing that one must do their homework, visit governmental, etc. websites, avoid the glossy travel magazines and those who hype.

      @GMAceM  Год назад

      Hello, thanks for your comment!
      Yeah doing your research is definitely a must, but when you’re a kid being forced to come by your parents you don’t really consider research that much, at least I didn’t.
      Honestly temperature is confusing because my dad was recently in Quito twice in these past 3 months and both times when it was supposed to be cold, it was hot. I also made a community post where I showed the screenshots of Quito where it was sunny at 1-2PM, and by 3PM it was raining cats and dogs. At this point I’d rather say that temperature just depends on the day you happen to be there.
      As for the condition of the streets you’d think that it’s irrelevant but in some places it really isn’t. Even here in Portoviejo I know people who have been complaining since I’ve known them (5+ years at this point) that they fix every street except theirs. It’s crazy but I’m glad that at least there is and has been progress.
      Education is just unfortunate. As someone who’s a teacher I don’t think it’s fair to those who try their best to have to see how those who don’t somehow pass. And it is true that most who come have their money and wages but I also know a case of someone who wrote me directly asking me about work in Ecuador, I’ve even seen comments on some videos about the same thing. Everyone’s condition is different so I try to help as many people as I can by informing them about what I go through and how to solve it whenever possible. These are my experiences so definitely things will vary for everyone.
      Thanks for watching! 👏🏼

    I enjoy your videos as they impart good information. But the thing that almost made me stop watching is the lighting fast texts that flash on and off the screen. I know you said below that you expected those who were interested to scroll back to read them. May I suggest that if we're watching the video, it's because we're interested. But they are difficult to watch and impossible to read. Better not have the text at all.

    • @GMAceM

      Hey, I appreciate the feedback!
      This editing style is one I’ve shifted away from a bit. I’ll still add informative text on screen but now it lasts much more time (as seen on more of my recent videos). I was still figuring out what works best and there is a lot of YT strategy that needs to be taken into consideration when making a video but I think I’ve found a rhythm that works. I have contemplated not having information on screen at all but I feel it takes away from the information maybe some people do want to go back and read or screenshot later on. I could also always say the things that I usually make into text but if my videos are somewhat lengthy now, they would only become unbearably lengthy by saying all the things that are written. That’s also why I made my podcasts where I just deep dive into topics and not worry about how long they are.

      The situation with the police is so strange, I remember them being the ultimate symbol of peace when I was in the states and now I just don’t get why they (some not all) decided to do things that make you doubt their purpose. And some police are pretty cool here but I want them to be effective and cool. Like they’ll stop people for literally nothing here to get money out of them but ignore crime happening right next to them.

      “Nowhere is paradise” is probably the realest thing I’ve read today. I always think that no place is perfect because even perfection itself is defined differently by people. But just to be clear, I don’t think the USA is perfect and in that same sense I don’t think Ecuador is perfect or that anyplace is perfect because I’m sure no matter where you go, you can find fault in those places. But when I highlight the faults or even the strengths of a place it’s not to make any place look extremely bad or extremely good, but to speak of a reality. I’m sorry for the loss of your best friend and I hope everything’s alright but that’s the reality you lived through where you’re at, right? Does that mean if someone else goes they’ll live through the same thing? No, of course not, it’s not guaranteed, but by talking about your experience you prepare people for a possibility, and that’s what me and others who talk about Ecuador are always trying to do. I appreciate you telling me about these things because maybe it seems like I make one thing look really bad or really good but to clarify, that’s my experience and I’m here to tell it so that everyone’s can have a more complete idea of Ecuador before coming over.

      Hate to break it to you, but there are LGBT parades throughout Ecuador's cities. It must be because it's a democratic country which respects personal freedom. There are always places like Russia which don't have LGBT parades or personal freedom, as we do in the US and Ecuador. That might be a better fit for you.

      Those are the questions that everyone here asks themselves all the time. A lot of people just resort to taking precautions, you know being street smart and avoiding things that could be considered to be dangerous. And we all know it’s not consistently dangerous, but it is annoying to have to go out and worry that something could happen in places or moments that it shouldn’t.

      @@bibekghatak5860 I’ve seen that the trust in countries authorities just keeps dwindling as time passes, especially in the states where the situation with the police is concerning but for different reasons than here. The worst part is that there doesn’t seem to be an end all solution for how things are because you get rid of one bad actor and another takes their place. That’s why even in presidential elections or even just the mayoral elections that recently passed, everyone just hopes that the person who wins does something to help. Everyone will complain but when all is said and done if the person (mayor or president) was terrible they most likely end up fleeing the country.
