@@BPe-ie9je I actually have considered it before! There would be a lot of planning and prep to do if I were to take such a big move though but it’s always on my mind as a great place to live. I’m kind of worried though that I’ll get the same idea that I talked about in my Quito video.
I could not have said any of that better my brother. Hang in there because this will pass. My favorite expression in life is "this too shall pass" and Ecuador is better than most people realize and we will survive this "crisis". When I get back (soon) lets do a live stream together.

One advantage Ecuadorians in Ecuador could be interpersonal relationships and community (for mutual support and aid) -- we don't have any real sense of community much anymore in the hyper-individualized USA. And it is getting increasingly difficult for US Americans to afford to live -- most US Americans aren't thriving currently at all.
I have heard about how individualized everything is over there and I can see it online even more every day with people seeking out online communities and creating parasocial relationships in order to feel like they’re a part of something. Over here it’s not at that level yet but with the advancement of technology I’ve felt like the usual interactive society is little by little being less and less interactive.
As for thriving, it definitely feels like the money you make in the states can take you much further outside of the states and that’s unfortunate.
I second this! It's sad because where I'm from we used to have a lot of cohesion and community. Some people don't want to admit it, but all the foreigners the government has brought in have really broken down community where it is now hyper-individualized. I am talking about 99 to 1, foreigners to locals at the minimum. So I'm not talking about a few foreigners on the block saying hello to you. 99 to 1 is just too much of an imbalance and it was not responsible for the government to put this on the people. We never wanted it and we suffer under it.
I would not wish that for Ecuador. Imagine if Quito only had 20% Ecuadorian people as residents, and other places 10% were Ecuadorian. The Ecuadorians would then be more individual, walking alone in a crowd of foreigners.
That's one thing I really liked about Ecuador, when I lived there for years, which was the cohesion. Even though I was an outsider, a gringo, it was clear I was in a home (as a guest) and not just some cut up marketplace for the whole world to invest. I know with the influx of certain foreigners into Ecuador recently, and maybe world powers wanting their hands on your country, it can change. I hope it doesn't. I hope Ecuador stays Ecuadorian and stays the home to Ecuadorians.
I am Ecuadorian and find it very hard surviving, I started my own busines some years ago, I ran my own business and had a hairdressing salon unfortunately it did not work out for various reasons. Then I became an English teacher and the salary was too low. I could not live on that income at all. I own my house, I have been trying to sell my other properties to pay my debts and stay afloat. I have found that people who are interested in buying my properties unfortunately do not have the money to do it. The potential buyers are all relying on bank loans. I was never before in such a terrible economical situation as I am at the moment! It is quite sad and depressing! The tourism industry has been badly affected!

Thank you for taking the time to talk about your situation. It’s unfortunate but this is what many people are going through. In my house, my mom has a similar situation where she studied to become a hairdresser and she does nails as well (I think she would be a beautician?) but she hasn’t had many people who hire her for these things so for the most part she is unemployed and has been for many years now. My dad, brother, and I are the ones who try to do what we can to hold up the house but it is tough and it gets tougher as the economy gets worse.
Also as a fellow English teacher I can relate that it’s just not enough, not unless you’re teaching all the time and that burns you out very quickly.
I hope you’re able to find buyers for the properties you have and that the situation gets better for you. Stay safe and take care!

I just recently starting following your videos. I first discovered Amelia and JT. I arrived here on 12/17/23, met a great bunch of expats in Cuenca and have just spent about three weeks in the Galapagos. I've shared a couple of your videos about the current drug fiasco with friends back home along with all of my amazing adventures here. I can't say enough about how much I have enjoyed, my time here, the people, the food, the wildlife. It has been an adventure beyond my wildest imagination. I hope to come back soon and would like to meet you one day. All the best to your, your family and Ecuador.

As a born US citizen this is a good informative report for outsiders like me !
But unfortunately even if we're from different countries everything is connected..
For example when the US was in a Great depression in the 1900s , so was other countries because we was .
I'm 26 from Wichita Kansas in we have the same problem.. you can go on indeed in find over 9,000 jobs frequently but most businesses won't hire people without experience even if you have a degree..
In that puts you down because where do you start if no one gives you a chance?
The cost of living is increasing here , inflation is real . Minimum wage is $7 in Kansas most homes cost $75,000 or more !
Living in the States isn't a promise good life . I am grateful & blessed because i was born in the US but we all have problems , we all have obstacles , we all have different perspectives/perception of life ..
No health care , yet immigrants in California have health care ! So each State & city is different .
I wish the best for all of us , stay strong , cherish life !

Wow... $75,000 for a home. Where I am the AVERAGE price for a home is over $1,000,000, I think it's getting closer to $2 million now (which is outrageous and no local person can afford that who doesn't already own a home). So I guess it really does make a difference where/which city one is in. Definitely cost of living is something to consider.

Thank you for giving me a better idea of what life is really like for Ecuadorians. I understand why people would look for jobs in other countries as the local salaries just don't provide the purchasing power needed to live a decent life. I hope that things will get better.

💯 accurate everything you said! I'm Ecuadorian and was part of the group of people that got the Senescyt scholarship to study anywhere in the world. I did my Master degree in the UK and when I returned to Ecuador it was almost impossible to find a good job (a frustrating time). Some years later my partner was offered a good position in London as skilled worker and we both came together. Here in London I got a job completely related to what I studied in just 1 month, sometimes I can't believe it 😮!
Unfortunately, even though the country is so beautiful! I don't think we will ever be coming back.

Hola Ace! Thanks for another fine video. I have been saving for a trip to Ecuador for a year. As a retiree on a fixed income my funds are limited, but it is still less expensive to visit Ecuador than to try to travel most places in the US. Besides, I have wanted to see Ecuador forever! I almost cancelled recently due to reports from there, but am coming on February 1st now as originally planned. In my own small way, I want to support the economy there and the people whose livelihoods rely on tourism. Your honest and direct videos are unique for helping people like me understand life there better. I am Ecuadorian. I live in the US for 50 years, this is one of the difficult times my beautiful native land have gone through, but we will rise stronger, and will serve as an example to other nations, that when people stand up for justice, God is on your side. I will go visit in a few days to celebrate high school reunion. I will not miss it for anything. The goos ones are more!

Thanks for posting this honest message. I've been to Ecuador and thought about retiring there, but desperate people do desperate things. It's sad because 'la gente' are people I'd like to live around, so to see them suffer through no fault of their own really is disturbing.
My wife and I were in Quito, actually having lunch near the Palace, when the city went crazy for a minute. We loved Quito and we will definitely be back.

@gmaceM I am really sorry about what going on in Ecuador. Near the end of covid I spent a month on the coast in Montainita and fell in love with it the people and the friends I made. I pray for you all that things will get better soon and life returns to the Tranquilla life I found during my time in Ecuador.
Regardless of how things are I’m also always hoping for the best. Nothing is guaranteed but with the efforts being made by the current government to make things better I feel that in due time and overcoming hardships that things are gonna be just fine.

The most dangerous places in the USA are those that do not allow the open carry of guns. We have a bill of rights that secures our right to bear arms and defend ourselves. In the American "Wild West" of the 1800s,, there was actually a very low rate of murder. The USA and Switzerland probably have the most guns per capita. They are probably the least invaded countries, also. Mexico has very strict gun laws, which keeps the criminals with guns safe to kill others. Because of corruption with police, there are many vigilantes taking back their communities in Mexico. They have obtained assault rifles like the drug cartels have obtained. To stop the Russian invasion of Ukraine, Ukraine handed out machine guns to their citizens. Maybe Equador should try arming local militias to protect their own communities.
Good video! It's hard to know where to live. Sometimes we dream up that by moving, our problems will be solved. I'm glad you mentioned that while the wages/salaries are higher in the US, so is the cost of living.
I lived in Ecuador for a long time. I'm sure people looked at me as a gringo and assumed I had money. I definitely benefitted from being a native English speaker and being able to get certain overseas jobs, but I wasn't wealthy. I only made about $800USD/month (which I know is almost double min wage there) and some months even less, some months a bit more. It was enough though to rent a very nice and large place, that could fit a couple people, and I might just be eating and sleeping a lot of the time, and not spending much more, but if I was careful with spending, I could make it. There was a lot less stress for me in Ecuador when it came to finances. I knew I would have a roof over my head at least and some food.
In the United States, Canada, and some other English speaking countries now, there has been a lot of inflation just these past few years, with rent prices especially, and on basics like food. In the city I'm in, rent has almost doubled over just the last few years. It is almost impossible to find a place to rent for under $1100 a month, and probably you'll be paying closer to $1400 for a tiny place. Half or a third of the size of the places I was renting in Ecuador. To get the places I had in Ecuador here in North America, could cost me easily $3000-$5000/month. You go and get two bags of groceries here in North America where I'm at and you're spending $100 easy now.
It really does depend on one's financial situation. I think if you're making $1500 or more in Ecuador, then you're having a pretty good life and probably will have a better life than you can in North America if your plan is to work a regular job in the US or Canada, and live in a city. I'd say, at least in expensive cities, you would need to make around $4000/month to live the same lifestyle that $1500/month gets you in Ecuador. Give or take a bit. Rough estimate. If you will come to North America and work in a top profession, and get a very high salary, then okay, you'll upgrade. Otherwise, if you're planning to work at a coffee shop, or another sort of regular job, you'll be living smaller in a North American city than you are living in Ecuador if you make $1500+ now.

This is probably one of the realest comments I have ever seen on my channel. One thing that’s missing from the comment is a decent wage, with that Ecuadorians would feel more incentivized to stay and do a good job and not feel the need to fall into the tendrils of corruption.

Thanks a ton for taking the time to comment and having the desire to contribute to the country. I think the best ways to contribute are to both interact with the locals and make local purchases. I’m generally a big advocate of not overspending on tech and stuff because that can be exorbitantly priced here, but for everything else (food, furniture, etc.) it’s definitely great to buy from a mom and pops store or see if you can find people who make things locally. I love seeing some of the interactions in expat groups on Facebook where I’ve seen that there’s support for the locals who make posts maybe selling an item or service so maybe you can consider joining some of those.

Let's take this further as a new member. I work part-time. Don't necessarily have to although I have nothing against a little more money. I consider myself semi-retired. BUT, I have worked since I was 11 years old and though I don't want to work 40-60 hours/week anymore, there are a lot of hours in the day. I want to be involved in life. In America I have volunteered and worked in prison programs, worked with addiction, done work with the homeless, sometimes paid but often as a volunteer. Spending all day on a bench or the beach is too much like death to me. Part of my enjoyment of life is being of service. I would love to hear about how people my age who want to stay and be a meaningful part of the community can volunteer in meaningful programs. All I hear is cheap living and safety. I don't want to pass through and I think there may be others like me out there.@@GMAceM

Don’t have a lot of specific information about that other than the fact that a friend who’s family runs a shrimp farm has always run into the “people sneaking in and stealing” but that’s just a “normal” problem over here.

How can your friend only be making half of the minimum wage when the government mandates a minimum of that certain amount must be paid?
There are always workarounds when it comes to wages. For example there were a lot of problems for Ecuadorians when businesses started hiring Venezuelans because they would hire them for cheaper even if that wasn’t legal. The thing was that since some Venezuelans were here illegally they couldn’t complain about wages and that’s why businesses would hire them. As for my friend, I think it’s because she’s working with the “facturero” (receipts) and when you work with those your just make receipts for the amount of time you work or what you charge for that service. I don’t think it’s fair for her though because she works normal working hours and is definitely not being compensated adequately.

Indeed it is but as with most things, there are always workarounds. Sure it’s great when we talk about the beneficial ones like getting a process done faster or something, but very few people like to talk about the bad ones like underpaying or cutting corners on building infrastructures.

Indeed I am! Don’t worry about it, I think since I don’t talk about it at all most people (Ecuadorians included) have various guesses as to where I’m from and I would’ve talked about it before but I wanted to do so in a more “get to know me” style video. For now, I think it was important to know so it’s all good and I’ll probably give more details at a later date.
