I have lots of Cuenca content on my site. I hope you're there for Independence Day and All Saints Day as it's a very special time and there should be a parade this year I think. They used to have it but slowed things down after 2020, but if so it's really spectacular. I also have a lot of videos of day trips from the city, you can take a bus or Andres has an SUV if you want a guide.
Hello Ayngelina, I really enjoyed this video. You mix culture, history and food/drink. I like it a lot. Is raw egg ok in Ecuador? In Sweden we do not have salmonella but in many other countries they do, including in USA. You look great in that dress.
Hi again Ayngelina, Libby and I were watching this video again, she still has to go to 10 de Agosto and try the levanto de muertos! But my question here is, what are those white, round egg-like things in that Super Cholo drink at Chiplote?

Ecuador has such an interesting history, especially with the different Indigenous cultures. A lot of people assume it was just Inca, but actually there are so many different cultures that still exist today.
@@ayngelina I'm only almost one year here , My favorite spot is Cerro las Monjas it has the best Cuenca view , and for food I like de locro de papa served by Cafe de Ñucallacta
@@ayngelina We stopped into the Panaderia Patrimonial Todos Santos first and picked up a loaf of raisin walnut bread, some Christ's knees and some faux bagels. Then we went around the corner to Panaderia Todos Santos to get the cheese bread. All of it is so delicious. It's much lighter than I expected and the flavors are so subtle but tasty. We met some friends over at Casa de la Gallesina and ended up walking around to various little shops and tried several things. It was all delicious. Thanks for the recommendations.
Great video. Lots of changes to the Temple of the Sun. I lived quite near there in the 90's and it was undeveloped then. Also, the Mercado Diez de Agosto is much more modern and brighter now.
Great Job Ayngelina! Once again you've presented details of Cuenca we haven't seen or been aware of previously. We're so glad you gave a shout out to the Panadería Todos Santos. We remember roughly where this is, however recall it being somewhat tucked away. They point it out on the Bus Tour, however even then it may seem elusive to find later. I think it's right off La Calle Larga, however do you know the cross street? Thanks for your hard work!
It's Mariano Cueva y Honorato Vasquez, if you go to the Todos Santos church that's the cross street. I'm going to put all the addresses for places in the video in the description. Normally I do it before the video goes live but we went to Quilotoa (still here) and wifi was dicey so I just wanted to make sure I didn't miss an upload.
Well done video Aynge. Very familiar with Cuenca as I visited there for the past 12 years or so to visit my father-in-law who passed away last year. Love the various types of bread as well and the cleanliness of the town. It can get very cold sometimes, with ice on the windows at night. I solved that problem with a small ceramic heater I took with me from NY. I don't know if this is still happening there but air pollution was becoming a problem there, not only from the vehicles' exhausts but from blowing up the mountains nearby for construction material.
Just discovered your videos early this morning, and I have been binge watching for the last 8 hours straight. I am planning on going to Cuenca from Fort Lauderdale between October and the end of the year. Can you give me some info on how much it will cost to stay at that hostel?
They have three houses and the rates depend on duration and time of year but send Andres a WhatsApp message saying you saw the videos and it’s the fastest way to get a quote. And I hope you find the videos helpful 😊
And his WhatsApp is in the description of my videos. I don’t make a referral fee but I put it there because so many people have asked and end up staying there.

Hi Ayngelina, this sounds like another outstanding and well thought out video. We have a question. How can we best support your channel? Specifically, is it a bigger help to have live eyes on your premiere or views, comments, and likes after the premiere? Thanks for letting us know.
That's a really good question. If you watch outside the premiere there are ads and I make a very small bit of money from that. The most important factor I think is that people like comment and watch in the first three hours
I really enjoyed your video. You are very knowledgeable about Cuenca and that is awesome. When I retire Cuenca is near the top of my list to visit and spend some extended time. Oh and visit San Bartolome. Thanks for the video.
I don't know what other places cost but you can't beat this location. If you're looking for something at La Casa Cuencana they have a variety of rooms and Andres could help you with pricing as it depends on length of stay etc +593 987 11 95 50
I am thinking I might need a stay in Cuenca for a week, but would need a place that is ok with birds in cages. Ideally screening on windows 😎 . I like the size of that place for a short-term stay 😀
Sending videos to a new friend who is considering Costa Rica. I am interested in showing why Ecuador is the best choice and you help that endeavor greatly!
I compare Ecuador to Costa Rica a lot. It's much cheaper, it has all the same nature and beauty but it has the strong local culture which I think is missing from Costa Rica because all of the businesses are run by foreigners who want to make vegan, gluten free cafes for surfers and yogis.
As always, I love your editing! Great vid! BTW, is the camera with which you took the pictures in the museum the same one you use for recording? The quality of picture and the autofocus is great! My favorite tamales are those of the "La casa de la golosina" as well! And first time I see the "chachi". I'll try it next time if they have it.
So we weren't allowed to take video in the museum so I took photos with my Google Pixel 3. The camera I use for video is the Sony ZV1 which was meant for blogging and I love it. The only issue is that it's not really wide so I hacked a Chinese wide angle on top to give me a bit more options.
@@ayngelina It's amazing the photos and videos that phone is capable of. An optical zoom lens is about all it lacks to be semi-pro. Well, manual focus too (but that's just software). It can really do justice to a scene within its range. The 6 has some optical zoom built in and it helps expand that range. Shocking how far things have come since the first digital camera we bought, like 1.4mp iirc. That thing brought back images from Ecuador. We knew they weren't near as good as film but a heck of a lot cheaper. 🤯
@@elgringoec you know the funny thing is I have been publishing my website for 12 years and in that time I learned it was not the quality of photos or proficiency in writing that made me successful. It was my willingness to share the most personal side of my travels. And so when I first started regularly shooting videos in 2020 I wanted to focus on storytelling. After a year I moved from shooting on my phone to a camera but I have zero desire to upgrade to a pro camera because I think in video my success will be the same, simply to share the most honest part of my life.
@@ayngelina That makes sense. They say every picture tells a story (or at least one musician did 😂) and that a picture is worth a thousand words - and while there's truth in that, random pictures unaccompanied by stories are of limited appeal. Your stories make the images far more meaningful and enjoyable.
@@ayngelina I loved smelling it every morning since it seems a bakery was on every block. I absolutely fell in love with Cuenca and all of Ecuador. You are doing exactly what I've wanted to do since I lived there.

The todo santos bakery used to be my grandmothers house, it had a garden in the middle of the home and the entrance of the bakery used to be the sala and the closed door was the actual entrance to the home
Hello Ayngelina I'm Gabriel from Philadelphia living in Guayaquil you can come over to Guayaquil soon it's very awesome the city most biggest in Ecuador 🇪🇨
Weather is pretty much spring like all year round. But in rainy season it can be sunny all morning and then grey and rainy through the afternoon. Sometimes it can rain all day but that's not common.
Hi Ayngelina, can you confirm something for us? We will be there in Cuenca in a few weeks. We've heard that while you can't drink the water from the tap in Quito, you can in Cuenca. Is this true?
Yes it’s true. Some locals drink water from the tap in Quito but Andres never did but it’s well known that the water in Cuenca is safe. The source is Cajas national park and the city runs the water system. As well when you arrive in Ecuador please drink twice the amount of water you normally would to avoid issues with altitude. It’s totally normal to feel tired, out of breath and even a little queasy but water will help alleviate that. I find after 5-7 days I’ve acclimated but count your glasses of water and make sure it’s at least one an hour two is better.
I usually put the prices in the video, honestly at all of these huecas (hole in the wall restaurants) prices are usually under $2. This is why I usually share traditional Ecuadorian food, if for some reason I don't like it then I'm not out much. Are you on a tight budget?
Sole source of income for a family of five so it is a little tight. I’d really like to visit there one day and hopefully eventually retire there. Thanks for the information and the video.
@@joshuataylor1642 good food in Cuenca is quite affordable, moreso than other towns. If you eat traditional and don't need "food from home" and know how to cook you can do it quite affordably. But it really depends on the ability to adapt.
Ayngelina generally speaking I eat about anything and like most of it, unfortunately. Of all the videos I have watched the only food I have seen that might be an issue is I don’t really like plantains which I hear are a staple in Ecuador.
@@joshuataylor1642 Food is very regional. So yes plantains are a staple on the coast because they are plentiful. But in the Andes the principal starch is replaced with potato and various forms of corn, in the Amazon yuca. And rice is common everywhere.
Hi Ayngelina! Thanks so much for your video. It was very educational. Cuenca is on my short list for retiring to. Actually, I'll still be working remotely, so I have a very important question. Is the internet there reliable, Or does it drop due to various weather conditions? Is the quality different on the weekends vs the week since it may be used more on weekends. Thanks so much for your response!
So this is a bit of a complicated question. Yes there is definitely good internet...depending on where you are. There are several coworking places that have lightning fast wifi if you need it. I found weekends some of my RUclips lives would cut out because of where I was. You need to ask where you're staying to do a speed test because the old historic buildings have very thick walls and so it can be tough. But it depends on neighbourhood and if you need to stream. But regular wifi is always fine.
@@ayngelina Thanks Ayngelina! I day trade the market so would need streaming internet. Would hate for it to drop if I'm actually in a trade and can't get out.
Prices range but are usually a few hundred dollars. If you are interested in the Casa Cuencana you can book directly with Andres. I included his WhatsApp number in the description
What about your bathroom? Do you have your own or do you share? I lived in Cuenca for six weeks in the summer of 2019, in an Airbnb, and I absolutely loved it. Considering retiring there someday.

@@ayngelina I'll love Quenca too but, I'll love all of the country 💕....have you spent time in the Loja/Vilcabamba area? I resently spoke to one of the girls in the Equadorian embassy in London..she's from Quito but, loves Vilcabamba and, urged me to hurry up learning my Spanish...will do...course is here on my table next to me...😊
@@Jetmab04 yes if you look early on in my Ecuador videos I have a video on Loja and another one on Vilcabamba. There is definitely more English in Vilcabamba because it has such a big expat population but I don't think we encountered any in Loja.
Very interesting. The thing about the museo PumaPongo, and for all museums, is that it is wrong to think you can visit the entire museum in one day. It is good to say, 'ok, today I will visit the section on money history in EC' just visit that part, then leave to come back another day. I've done this in all the big cities, and don't get burned out after a few hours. After visiting museo Pumapongo, I learned that EC was occupied in 1940 by Peru!!!! I was shocked. Most Ecuadorians don't know this. Anyway, I can go on, but won't. I love birds, but neither have visual equipment, etc. so feel as though I am lost here.
Yes because it's free it makes it a great place to visit whenever you want. The relationship between Ecuador and Peru is challenging, when Gran Colombia broke up Peru thought they would acquire Ecuador - but the people here had a very different idea. In some videos I share Peruvians have been a bit aggressive about comparing the two countries. I love both and just wish we could recognize they are similar but also very different and move on.
Batalla de Tarqui in 1829 as well as several other times in history. 1941 Peru acquired almost half of the territory of Ecuador, which became northern Peru.. There was also a battle for the Galapagos.
@@carlosespinoza2453 the Civil War was fought by the Inca in Southern Peru vs the Inca in Northern Peru and Southern Ecuador. The purpose of sharing this is because many people feel that the Inca were always united and that wasn't the case.

Hi Ayngelina, just wondering what kind of drone you use for your videos. We are returning to Ecuador for visit this summer and are considering bringing a drone. We'll be traveling through out the country.
I use a DJI Mini 2. A drone is complicated here. There are so many regional airports in cities like Cuenca making them no fly zones and the coast can be very windy so you need to get up early to fly them or sometimes just before sunset works. Some people have been able to unlock Cuenca to fly on certain blocks but I've never been able to find anywhere in the historic district that allows it. I also gave up in Latacunga but was able to unlock in Esmeraldas, you'll need an Ecuadorian phone number to do so as you have to receive a text so they know who you are in case you fly anywhere you're not supposed to.
@@ayngelina Thank you, Ayngelina. By the way, when you're in Quito again and have a chance, you might want to check out Heladeria San Augustin. It's across the street from the church of San Augustin which subject of one of the many "leyendas" (legends) in Quito. The Heladeria is family owned and has been for well over seventy years.
Hi, thank you for your video. It's very helpful. :) I'm going to visit Cuenca soon, I'd like to find out how quiet it is in the area where you live (the historical part of Cuenca as I understood), do you hear a lot of noise at night? Is there loud music and a lot of traffic at night? Thanks in advance. :)
I find the busiest night of the week is Thursday. But the historical buildings have such thick walls. if your bed is next to a window facing the street you may hear people exiting the bars but a lot of places are built with the rooms farther back. It really depends where you stay. Some people say the historical district is loud but I don't find that to be true.
Wow, thank you so much for this video! My gf kind of ran away from the US in 2015 because of how she saw things were going back then. She basically lives in Cuenca now, but comes back here to the US over our holiday season for a couple months. She actually first ended up in Cuenca at Casa Cuencana! She found out about it from watching Frank and Angie's $300 a Month Cuenca Rentals YT page, are you familiar with them? Anyway, I visited her there a couple times, walked Hermano Miguel towards centro many times! Then a short block the other way to Calle Larga and up to Mercado 10 de Agosto, what a perfect location to explore downtown Cuenca! I could go on an on about being there, that whole Hermano Miguel area, that is true CUENCA! You video reminds me so much of my times there, thanks for posting! :)
Loved your video and touring the Cuenca Historic district with you. May I ask - where do you get your hair cut in Cuenca?, i like your haircut. Also, I do subscribe to your channel and can't wait till next video on Cuenca.
I still haven't found a hair stylist yet. It's part of the reason I wear my hair long, I'm too lazy to find someone to cut it. I've had my hair coloured a couple times but didn't quite like it.
What a a delightful place to live in...are you planning to live here temporarily or for a short period?.....I'm amazed at your report....I hope to be there soon....Your video was grand...
It's difficult for me to plan. I'd like to go to Mexico for the month of May and then I'm heading back to Canada to see my family over the summer and likely back to Cuenca.
Nice video! Well shot and edited, do you mind sharing what type of camera do you use? and also what type of editing software? These videos look very well produced! By the way, i also have a question about food, is there a "Food Truck" scene in Cuenca as they do in Quito for the past 6 years or so, i think they opened or allowed Food Trucks in Guayaquil now, so, was wondering if Cuenca has food trucks and where exactly are they located and what type of foods do they offer? Thanks for your time and keep up with your videos! will keep watching
Thanks so much. My primary camera is a SONY ZV1 and secondarily a GoPro Hero 9 and DJI Mini 2 Drone. At one time Cuenca had lot of food trucks and even a container park, but not anymore probably because it wasn't cheap. To be honest, I don't think they are needed. The food trucks had burgers for $7 when you can get them for cheaper and better in huecas. Cuenca's food scene is a bit different, you can find high quality food for less money in Cuenca in huecas. Also the traditional set lunch of almuerzos is much better in Cuenca. Huecas in safe neighbourhoods are hard to find in Guayaquil, they exist but are much more expensive. And in Quito a lot of them didn't survive the last two years. Cuenca is definitely a food city, and is committed to traditional food at inexpensive prices. I also have a video on Cuenca huecas on the channel. I also have a vegetarian video that will show you almuerzos in Cuenca. Vegetarian are much more expensive (under $5) but you can go as low as $2 for an almuerzo in Cuenca and have great food.
@@ayngelina Thanks a lot for the detailed reply! Very good to know that Cuenca had a food truck scene at one time, yes, you are right, prices are def not cheap in Food Trucks sometimes. My mom lives in Cuenca, i actually watched your "Huecas food video before and shared it with my mom. She was happy to see it as she is neighbors with the lady that sells sanduches de Pernil, i forgot the name of the store, "Dona Piedad" i think , but we used to buy from Sanduches del Mono when it was popular in the 80s and 90s. Senor Luis died about a decade ago or more, the niece took over and she actually rents a spot in our house in the corner of Juan Jaramillo y Miguel ANgel Estrella, the 3 story house in the corner is where my mom is retired now. She likes there and we also have a small house in the outskirts of Cuenca, in Banos. If i ever make it back to Cuenca, we can maybe have some coffee or those cool cocktail drinks i saw you drinking. Be safe and take care! Gracias!

You look great in that dress.

Oh I'm so glad you enjoyed it!
Great video. Lots of changes to the Temple of the Sun. I lived quite near there in the 90's and it was undeveloped then. Also, the Mercado Diez de Agosto is much more modern and brighter now.
I think when you return you'll notice a lot of differences, especially with infrastructure and the roads.
I was in Cuenca two years ago & it was a nice experience.
Any other favourite spots in Ecuador?
I havent noticed an issue with pollution but they may have cracked down on that. And yes in October it was definitely a bit chilly
Great video, love Cuenca
Me too. What are your other favourite spots? I'm always looking for new ideas 😊

@@ayngelina
It's amazing the photos and videos that phone is capable of.
@@ayngelina
That makes sense. They say every picture tells a story (or at least one musician did 😂) and that a picture is worth a thousand words - and while there's truth in that, random pictures unaccompanied by stories are of limited appeal. Your stories make the images far more meaningful and enjoyable.
Nice memories for me. Thanks!

Hello Ayngelina I'm Gabriel from Philadelphia living in Guayaquil you can come over to Guayaquil soon it's very awesome the city most biggest in Ecuador 🇪🇨
I have a few videos from Guayaquil if you go back a couple months !
Do they have a lot of grey wnd hazy weather there?
Great video but could you give prices on the things you buy please? Trying to justify a trip eventually
@@ayngelina
Thanks Ayngelina! I day trade the market so would need streaming internet. Would hate for it to drop if I'm actually in a trade and can't get out.
Do you need video streaming or just regular streaming of data

And as for your question about the Inca, just Google Inca civil war.
@@carlosespinoza2453 It fought against Gran Colombia, of which Ecuador was a district.

Oh thank you! I actually have an ice cream tour on my wish list for Quito so I'm going to add this to it!

I find the busiest night of the week is Thursday. But the historical buildings have such thick walls. if your bed is next to a window facing the street you may hear people exiting the bars but a lot of places are built with the rooms farther back.

That was a huge cocktail! - how much? Here in Plano, TX they are so small and cost you an arm and a leg!
The Super Cholo? It's $6 and from 4-9pm it's 2 for 1.
Cool vid - tks!
Thanks so much!
great video
Thank you so much. More to come!
Would you send me a note of the best area to live, I arrived today for lookin for rentao a charming and not to large house…would you help me? I am at Salinas
You're looking to find a place in Salinas or Cuenca?
Would love to see prices (rent? Cost of bread, etc…) included.
That really depends on where you go and when you buy and how much. For food I do mention the prices but I don't on accommodation or tours because there is never one set price here.
@@ayngelina I can appreciate that. It would be nice to know a price range on apartments such as yours.
