    Hey everyone, hope this video helps you out a ton if you’re planning to live in Ecuador, but regardless if you’re coming to live or just want to visit, you’ll definitely want to check out the 22 tips video I made using the information that was given to me by others who have visited and have lived in Ecuador as well as some of my own experiences myself:
    ruclips.net/video/kpTiBX60PTM/видео.html
    I also wanted to make a correction that was recently pointed out to me. In the section of totals at the end ( 17:59 ) I did say the calculations correctly but the rent shown on screen is wrong for Guayaquil and Quito. For Guayaquil the Rent cost shown is supposed to be $650 and for Quito the rent shown is supposed to be $500. Those values were the ones shown in 1:58 of the video which were the values that were determined to be the average that were added up in the totals section.
    I appreciate the understanding and I hope you keep enjoying the content!

Mine is the minimum and don't qualify for the pensionado visa. I think it's 3x ecuadorian monthly wage. Can it be $70 or 2-3 × more?? Thanks

America has become an overpriced Shjt hole life is not fun here anymore everyone is so materialistic and they forget what really matters in life. Great videos clear and to the point. Good job

      Hello, appreciate your comment!
      I’ve been hearing about life in the states becoming way expensive, which makes the idea of coming to Ecuador much more appealing. You’ll definitely be able to relax a lot more because of how laid back things tend to be, especially if you’re in a more laid back part of the country. Since I know rent is expensive in the states right now (more so than it’s ever been) you’d definitely be able to have an amazing time here with what you get from that.
      Thanks for taking the time to check the video out and gotta say, great name. I kinda read it as part of the comment and was like “uh oh what did I do wrong” 😂

      I would be careful. This place reminds me of Florida in the 1990's. Everything was super cheap, if you stayed in a certain circle of activity. Tons of people spent a lot, and millions of others lived comfortably below the poverty line, with no complaints. There was no work to be had that paid well and was easy to get as a new person. Now, it has exploded to the point, there is no cheap way to live there. Everybody pays more than they ever imagined. Yes, jobs have improved some, but I bet not so much for non-English speakers. I can only imagine America is exporting inflation to Equador at a rapid pace. You already have the early stages, with some cities having rent literally 1/4 of the price in another city. Just wait until the entire internet wants to move there. Rents will be the first thing to spike, and nobody without really strong roots, or an internet profession will be able to pay. I think these fixed income retirees are taking a huge gamble. Thanks.

    Greetings from Guayaquil. I live in the center of the city, my electricity is about $40. We use fans instead of air conditioning. We do have an electric water heater that we turn on one hour in the morning. My water is $15, internet and "teléfono fijo" combo is $30. For mobile phone I use a tarjeta prepaga, costing me $10. And our house has belonged to my wife's family for 90 years. We don't pay rent, but there are costs to maintain the house.

      Thanks a ton for the feedback. I had been prepping for that video for months, since about November investigating to make sure it was as detailed as possible. I even made a community post and a Twitter comment and I said that I could make it like my older cost of living video or like others do it, but then it wouldn’t be me and I didn’t want to make a video that was like everyone else’s. And it’s a habit of mine in my videos to deep dive into topics so that everything’s understood, that’s what all the little notes that pop up from time to time are for since if I had to say everything then the video might end up being too long (and possibly boring lol). Your videos are very informative and I really like that you emphasize that the points you are making are from YOUR perspective, your real world experiences. You go into some great detail relating your experiences and that can help people make informed decisions. Bravo for doing such a great job of conveying that.
    MY perspective is that of a senior. I am over 65 (well over) and so when I research a city, I do so from that perspective. And in that regard, Cuenca checks off just about every box that I have to check off. Besides reasonable rents and a variety of choices, there is the benefit of being a senior in Cuenca (and Ecuador in general), that being the discounts available once one gets their cedula. Tranvia, buses and taxis are all half price. You can get the Tranvia passes and reload them as needed. Tranvia in general is a great plus for a senior in Cuenca, allowing us to get around the city affordably. Even if one were to use buses and Tranvia every day of the week, there would still be a substantial savings. AND, once one gets a cedula, there can be savings on flights originating in Ecuador, half price discount for air travel. If one wanted to go from, say Cuenca to Quito, a 45 minute flight would be much more affordable; 2 people could travel for the price of one. Or taking a long distance bus trip -- same thing.
    I know you and my friend Don Shader have done videos together, and they are definitely an asset. I'd like to suggest that you consider perhaps interviewing some other seniors, not just in Manta or Portoviejo, but perhaps Salinas or Guayaquil, Cuenca or Loja or Quito. Since there's a goodly number of us either in Ecuador or planning to move to Ecuador, it would be a great perspective for a young man to talk to an older man or woman about their experiences.
    Keep up the great work., Ace!

      Thank you so much Thom for your kind words!
      I always like going in depth on topics to make sure that all the information (or as much of it) is there and useful to those watching, that’s why sometimes my uploads aren’t as frequent as I’d like them to be.
      Really love the information about Cuenca and the tranvía, I’ve only gotten to be there twice and they were such short trips that I only got to explore a small part of Cuenca’s beauty. I’ve also really wanted to do a flight video to give information on that but that would be a video I’d do when I have the chance to go to one of the airports and get in touch with someone who could give me all the information, including stuff that’s not detailed on their sites and such. Heck I would also find it useful to take a flight and recommend the one I felt was best but that would definitely be a bigger video so I’d have to coordinate it really well.
      And I really appreciate the suggestion, I will definitely try to ask a senior from a different city for their time to participate in a video podcast episode! Maybe when I get to go to Cuenca (I’m trying to get there February) I’ll do it.
      Thanks a ton for watching! 👏🏼

    Ace's costs are very real, and he is honest, compared to some vlogs where the people are just trying to sell the "cheap" dream.
    I have a house and I used a couple of space heaters all winter last year. My largest bill was just over $50. People use gas for everything they can as it is so cheap, $3 for an 80 lb bottle/ tank. I only use gas for my shower, once or twice a day and a $3 tank (twice the size of BBQ tanks) lasts me more than 2 months. I have nice, long showers.
    I live in Loja and if you are a foreigner looking for a place without mold, probably unfurnished you should not be surprised if you pay upwards of US$1000 per month for a nice apartment. I came believing vlogs I had seen and I was very disappointed at the reality. It is not cheap to live in Ecuador, it can be reasonable, but don't think you are stepping back in time. A German woman I met who lived in FL for 25 years pays US$1400 for her apartment. She feels it is a good deal, compared to FL and not having to worry about exchange rates. Err on the side of reality and avoid disappointment.

    • @GMAceM

      Thanks again for this very detailed comment! The thing with cost of living is that it’s always different depending on who you ask but I try to give as much insight as possible so that everyone is prepared.
      I had actually forgotten about the tank of gas that most people use even though some people have been switching over to electric powered appliances over the recent years.
      I think unless someone is coming with a pension/retirement under $1000, they’re most of the times going to find everything cheap here especially if they choose cheaper cities. That being said, some cheaper cities do come with possible risks or downsides. Speaking with the locals for example when we talk about buying land (just for fun because we can’t afford it lol) we have talked about how cheap it is in more “desolate” areas but that’s exactly because those areas are desolate. You won’t find supermarkets or things will be somewhat far, not to mention that the area in some cases could be dangerous, but of course while this is what we’ve talked about it doesn’t necessarily have to be the case.
      Something I find pretty ironic (which goes back into the grass is greener podcast episode I recently made) is that the thought process of buying land is very similar for people here as it is with housing in the states. Everyone here is like “I wish I would’ve bought some land when it was cheaper” which is similar to what I’ve heard from people in the states saying “I should’ve bought a house before it got expensive”. What I find sad though is that someone from the outside can come here and it’ll still be affordable (or reasonable as you said) while someone from here would be unable to buy land/house here and much less in the states. There’s a huge conversation to be had about all this at a later date but just wanted to share some thoughts as well. Thanks for watching! 👏🏼

      @@GMAceM I would use gas, but the builder really made me LOSE confidence when he installed my gas stove top!!! Electricity is not cheap here, compared to parts of Australia, but it is convenient. I don't have to hail the gas tank truck, or buy a car to have them refilled. 🤣 You are doing a great job of being realistic and diplomatic in how you phrase things. If I was going to recommend any of the several blogs and vlogs I looked at over the past two years ... I would strongly recommend your vlog. Telling people the truth might make them change their minds, but it beats having them arrive and end up hating Ecuador, not because of Ecuador, but because of having the rug pulled out from under their feet expecting things that are not so.

    My experiences: I’ve frequented Guayaquil. Taxis now run $3-$5/trip. They add up. You could quickly spend $20/day if you are going around areas not on buss routes. And $20/day may be just two trips out! To the mall for a bit of shopping and a later dinner. Eating out is still cheap at roughly $15/person in most places and depending how May cocktails. Rent in a nice neighborhood with a gated road is around $450. In all, taxis became a significant expense when added up. Some days, when it’s pouring rain or the sun is brutally hot, a taxi is best. All the utilities you mentioned are still pretty cheap, but the grocery shopping and taxis are getting expensive.

    • @GMAceM

      Taxis are and always have been a luxury for people here in Ecuador. I still remember when I didn’t have my motorcycle and I would take taxis to get around people would call me “platudo” or “aniñado” for taking one. Platudo basically meaning I had money (which I didn’t) and aniñado is used here to refer to someone spoiled or who has money. But all that being said, they are useful for the reasons you specified, and even I can’t take my parents and brother on my motorcycle, even if people do tend to drive with 3-4 people on a motorcycle.
      Thanks for your analysis, enjoy the cocktails, and thanks for watching! 👏🏼

      @@GMAceM, although I’ve ridden here in the USA on one of the most traffic congested highways in the USA for over a decade, the wife is dead set against me having a motorcycle in Ecuador. I really want one for touring. We intend to get a car, they are cheap enough now, but we will see how it changes in a the next few years. I actually enjoy the driving in the city. A car isn’t a huge expense and the money saved on the taxis is worth it.
      I do understand what you are saying about the taxis. My wife normally takes the bus to work, but my daughter needs the taxis to get to the farther university. So there’s not much that can be done. The bigger city is certainly more expensive than your area, but it is manageable for now. I cannot wait to return.

    Ace, good product. Informative, well paced and well presented. If the constructive criticism box is open, I'd encourage you to put a small flowering plant (or some such thing) in front of the window security grate visible in the mirror at 19:30. I was pre-occupied with wondering who could squeeze through such an opening. Or, maybe I have it wrong and that's an antenna since it's by the window?

      Constructive criticism is always welcome, and I actually hadn’t noticed it while recording. Well, actually it’s just so high up that I wouldn’t really take it as the place for someone to try to sneak through (though heck, when someone wants to get into your house they’d sneak in through anywhere). To be honest now that you mention someone getting through an opening, I’d be much more concerned with the window that’s like flung open in my house. Its not completely open because it has a screen to avoid letting insects get in but still. It’s not visible in the video but that’s where the lighting I got came from. And I really liked it as a recording space, just didn’t enjoy the amount of noise coming in that I had to re-record scenes for (like the helicopter, someone playing loud music and such). Maybe I’ll angle the camera differently to avoid that if I decide to record there again.

      The thing about English level is that I can’t speak for each city. Just looking at Ecuador as a whole, it has one of the lowest levels of English in the world (if I remember correctly), BUT in my environment as an English teacher, a good amount of people that I know actually know English because they need to know English in order to teach it. It all depends on who you surround yourself with but I do highly recommend learning Spanish. That way no matter where you go in Ecuador you’ll be ready.

      I always make mention of the minimum wage because it’s something I talk about with Ecuadorian friends all the time. We (because it happens to me too) stretch ourselves very thin trying to live with what we earn, even when some of us live with our parents but we make it work. We just always wish we had more to be able to live a more peaceful life and in some cases be able to give back to our loved ones. It can be hard for many here to work 2 jobs and still just barely scrape by the month so I find myself talking about wages a lot. 😅

    Thank you for the video. You mentioned the cost of rent, but I’m not sure if you said anything about the number of bedrooms, or maybe I missed it. My god. Considering the low income of Ecuadorians and the crazy cost of almost everything, how do people afford to live, eat out or go on vacations there? It may seem ‘Cheap’ for foreigners, but it’s certainly doesn’t seem cheap for the people of Ecuador.

    • @GMAceM
      @GMAceM  Год назад +3

      You’re so very welcome!
      Oh no I knew I was missing something, and it’s frustrating because it was in my notes but it was hidden in the Guayaquil rent section. But yeah the amount of rooms definitely affects the cost of rent in conjunction with all the other factors that affect it too. Even the place that reflects negatively in all the things I mentioned could end up more expensive by adding a room or two.
      And I’m glad you mentioned the low income because it’s just terrible, even though someone told me that apparently Ecuador has the best minimum wage in Latin America, but just because it is the best doesn’t make it enough. People have to work two jobs or just avoid certain luxuries to have money, or even worse which is side with corruption. You would think it sounds preposterous but just look at how political campaigns work here. Everyone tries to side with one person who’s gonna be the mayor, they go to the rallies and are like besties with the campaign group. Do they believe in the ideals? No lol, friends who have been in these campaign groups almost always say the same thing, they’re supporting to hopefully get a good position in some government office or to guarantee a job that pays better than what they’re earning but they know that the elected official is NOT gonna do what they promised. And I realize that maybe that’s just the way politics work in the world and maybe I’m just unaware of that but still, that’s why I respect Casanova (the previous mayor of Portoviejo) because he did what no mayor before him had done, he actually fixed the city, he actually made new things for the city, he actually kept his word.
      But yeah, I’m ranting at this point. It’s not cheap for people who have lived their whole lives here, even for me because I have a normal(ish) job, teaching and I’m not willing to join a campaign that I don’t believe in for money. I’ll keep teaching, making videos, and hoping that little by little I can make a change.

      The local Ecuadorian people live differently from Americans. It is normal for families to live together and adult children stay living at home and contribute to the living expenses. There may be 4 or more working adults living in a home and they pay rent of $300 per month more or less. Most people cook meals at home the vast majority of the time. However, several normal restaurants are $3 for a meal. People can go on vacations to places within the country for a low cost or to other countries in Latin America. For example, a 4 hour ride in a van here is $12 per person, airbnb $30 per night, or in other countries like Argentina, Columbia, or Peru, the cost of living is even lower and you can go there for vacation.

    Excellent video. Very informative. I was however kind of surprised that you didn't cover Cuenca as it is the expat capital of Ecuador from what I have heard on other videos. The information for the IESS premium was enlightening. All the other videos I have listened to about healthcare in Ecuador priced IESS at $70 - $80. With me calculating at 17.60% I would probably be better off with private insurance. I do have a question if you could send me an answer, or answer it here, you referenced free healthcare and IESS as 2 separate systems. Could you please explain?

    • @GMAceM
      @GMAceM  Год назад +1

      Hello Daniel, I appreciate the thoughtful comment!
      I really wanted to and still want to talk about Cuenca, but I didn’t have anyone who could immediately answer my questions about Cuenca. I like to make sure I can get immediate and detailed responses before talking about anything and the friend I have in Cuenca is normally very busy with her work. But needless to say I will definitely make a Cuenca video in the future.
      As for the IESS question I can definitely answer that but it’s not a clear answer. The best way would be using a hypothetical: assume you got hurt, hit by a car let’s say. If an IESS ambulance happens to be the ones to see you and pick you up and take you to the hospital and treat you, they can’t charge you for that because healthcare is free. The complication that you MIGHT have is that if they were to pick you up and not deem your injury to be life-threatening then you would have to wait to be attended because you’re not with the IESS and you’re not a priority patient.
      This is what tends to happen to many who want to even schedule an appointment with the IESS and they schedule an appointment that they need and the IESS makes them wait months or even a year before they will see them. That’s why most people just decide to go to private doctors.
      On the other hand free healthcare can be very congested and getting a turn could take a while as well.
      That’s why even though every worker with a contract has access to the IESS, they will either try to get an appointment using free healthcare OR they will seek out private doctors in order to be seen more quickly.
      It’s a mess to be honest and probably one of the reasons why people here think healthcare is better in other countries, even without truly knowing if it is or isn’t.
      Hope this answered your question and thanks for watching! 👏🏼

      Appreciate the kind words Richard!
      Not too long ago I answered the question about the medicine in my “Tipping Culture in Ecuador | Q&A” video, but just to give you the summarized version: when I investigated I found a site with a list of medicines here in Ecuador and that medicine was nowhere to be found. I also asked a friend who works at a pharmacy and he also said they didn’t have it. The concern I had/have is that maybe in my city it isn’t available, but that also wouldn’t justify why it’s not on the list of medicines I had found.
      I’ll look into which beach towns would both be safe and have good medical facilities because in terms of safety you’d probably have to go to a smaller town but that would also mean medical facilities that aren’t the best. You can of course find private doctors everywhere but whether they have good medical facilities or not is definitely hit or miss.

    Great video! Key question though - if one gets very sick and has to go to the emergency room, in the worst case scenario, will the public health care cover those costs for foreigners?

    • @GMAceM
      @GMAceM  Год назад +4

      How’s it going Boyd, thanks for the question!
      I think severity, luck, and connections would be the factors that play heavily in this.
      Severity because if it’s something serious, like life threatening, then you’ll probably get instant access into the emergency room.
      Then there’s luck, because if the emergency room isn’t full then you’re good, but if it is then there might be a cause for concern.
      And then connections, if you happen to have a friend or family who are doctors in the public hospital then you have a much better chance of being attended quickly regardless of whether if the sickness is severe or not. I once had to get a penicillin shot and was allowed into the emergency room quickly because a friend just happened to be working there (and it also wasn’t horribly full) but normally it could’ve taken hours for me to get that shot.
      But all of that being said, in theory you should definitely get access into the emergency room no matter where you’re from and it shouldn’t cost you a dime.
      One thing that I recently heard about though is that the hospitals are supposed to provide medicine BUT apparently they had been sending people to buy their own. The government has now been cracking down on that because that means there was corruption at play there so I’m hoping that that issue is/gets resolved.
      I hope this answered your question, sorry for the long text, and thanks for watching! 👏🏼

I was just thinking through the worst-case scenario as I have read over time of foreigners who somehow ended up with huge, huge medical bills in Ecuador and were not allowed to leave until they produced the funds. I think this means they went to private hospitals? Watching this video just confirms that we are price gouged badly here in Canada. We pay up to 90% of our wages on rent. Renting a room in someones house in a small town can be up to $1500 monthly. It is a situation of a roof over your head or food. Unless you have a few people renting a small place together you won't be able to survive. This is for the average person making minimum wage. That wage may be higher than a lot of places, but we are also having to pay out the majority of it. Electricity is average $300. I haven't taken a taxi in years, but just to sit in it before you get driven anywhere was just under $6 where I live. Then it goes up a certain amount every 30 seconds. I have been homeless a couple of times here. It is very hard living in Canada.

      I have heard that Canada is quite expensive, and I constantly hear that the states isn’t much better. If I listen to what RUclipsrs that live in Japan have to say about Japan, then it’s bad there too. It seems like each country has it set for it to be impossible to live with your wage there, while making it possible for someone from the outside with a higher wage to live in that country. Then again someone from the same country with a high wage could live there but I wonder what percent of the population has that kind of wage and what they’re doing to make it. It’s like here in Ecuador where yeah, there’s filthy rich people, but they make up a small amount of the population while everyone else is out here making due with the bare minimum.
      But yeah, Canada sounds way tough. I hope that things are going better for you now and if you think Ecuador is a place where you can have a better life then I hope you can make it here one day. If not ecuador, then I hope you can make it to a place that’s good for you.

      I rent a 2 bedroom/ 2 bath w a study apartment for $380/month. Water is about $5/month and Electric is $15. Electric is low because no heat or air conditioning needed here. Transportation is inexpensive. Try to live near the Tranvia as it is 35 cents per ride. Buses can be 50 cents and taxi rides are usually 1.50-3.00. If you ship at the meecados then groceries are very inexpensive. Chicken breast $2/lb, ground beef $2/lb. Steaks $2.80-$4.00/lb. 30 eggs for $4.50. Loaf of bread $1.50, liter of milk $1.50.

    Ubers are super cheap in Quito and Guayaquil. The taxis in Quito are crap, over charging us every trip but I argued the fares down. The taxis in Cuenca (where I live) are EXCELLENT fare wise but the drivers can be reckless at times.

      @GMAceM  Год назад

      How’s it going Larry, apologize for the late reply.
      My family in Quito definitely emphasized that taxis in Quito are not good, not just due to overcharging but also because now it’s unsafe. And going back to the overcharging, even my uncle who’s a taxi driver charged me over $20 from the airport but apparently that’s the norm and since the taxi company at the airport is kinda “special” they don’t even let cars wait for people. It’s basically they get there and the person has to be there and then the car has got to go! Not sure if you get me but I saw it firsthand where my uncle stopped for less than a minute and the taxi people were already surrounding him.
      And yeah, I can confirm that the recklessness of taxis is a nationwide thing, it’s a rush to get from one place to another to try to get as many rides in as possible.

    • @GMAceM
      @GMAceM  Год назад

      Hello Luis, thank you for your question!
      Hmm, this one is tough because you don’t generally hear about medical insurance very often here because very few people or no one has it. Heck I can’t think of a single person I know who has medical insurance other than the affiliation with the IESS which they HAVE TO get when they start working at any public or private institution. I assume the fact that most people have faith in the fact that they have the IESS or that they have free public healthcare makes them not want to get medical insurance. Sometimes it’s also weird to talk about insurance because even car insurance isn’t something that’s needed which is crazy with how dangerous the streets can be. All that being said, I’ll have to look into this in more detail because right now I can’t really say much more about it.

The general logic most people use around here is that the further you are from the city (like reaching the countryside) the worse the internet gets. What do you think about the latest news about crime in southern Ecuador? Apparently around Vilcabamba. I was thinking that what would keep me from traveling to Ecuador were all the plane changes and stops back and forth. But now crime rears its head..... :-(

    • @GMAceM
      @GMAceM  Год назад

      How’s it going Dovy!
      Don Shader had made a video talking about a specific situation in Vilcabamba and it was awful to say the least, not something I immediately expected but also not completely unexpected.
      My personal thoughts are that in the most normal “live your life to yourself” aspect Ecuador CAN be quite safe. I don’t want to jinx myself, but I follow the do’s and don’ts that I always talk about, I barely go out (only to work or to enclosed areas or to record), I only move around on my motorcycle, and I keep my nose clean so for the most part I’ve managed to keep myself safe. BUT if I were to not follow my do’s and don’ts and deal with sus individuals, then I’m sure there are countless times where I would’ve run the risk of something bad happening to me. Is it guaranteed? Nah, but I’d be raising the 30-60% chance of it happening up to a 70-80%+ chance and I’m not willing to risk it.
      Also something else that I always say is that not all of Ecuador is dangerous. Cities like Cuenca, Baños, Loja, and Galapagos of course are well known for their safety. I have heard that every city has a dangerous area but those cities are the ones where you’re least likely to run into danger, as far as I’ve heard, and then of course Galapagos is supposed to be the ultimate safe space.
      If I can make a recommendation though, I’d say that you should definitely visit for 2 weeks-1 month and analyze the situation yourself. Live temporarily in the place you’re planning on living in as if you were already living there and see what it’s like. If you can, have someone (a guide or a facilitator) introduce you to some people and interact and see what they have to say, or even allow the person to tell you the “no holds barred” reality that you might not be able to get from a video. Currently a channel member and friend (Mark) is in Ecuador and exploring things and getting to know Ecuador so he can live through the reality, and he loves it!
      One last thing to keep in mind is that I try to portray things as close to reality as possible (while being entertaining of course) so that you’re prepared, because if I can save you from any level of shock or make things a little easier for you, then I’ll have done enough. Everything else, including the final choice, is always up to you.
      Thanks for watching and I hope this helps! 👏🏼

      @dovygoodguy1296 Год назад

      @@GMAceM Well, you sound very balanced. Maybe some of those guys in Vilcabamba get too worked up. After all, living in a US city has many more risks than Ecuador. If I had to choose between the two based in this risk I'd choose Ecuador. What's more disappointing is the difficulty in actually getting to Cuenca by air. So many stops. Even up to 20 hours. If you need to go back and forth it would be a pain in the neck!! A real disincentive to coming to Ecuador cities.

    • @GMAceM
      @GMAceM  Год назад

      @@dovygoodguy1296 yeah I’m pretty sure it’s just a specific group of people who are “less than friendly”.
      And for sure, I keep up with Philip DeFranco here on RUclips and my goodness the things I hear in the states are scary. Even if I didn’t hear from Phil, my friends keep me up to date with how the economy is not good and then there’s the occasional “the states is worse” comment I get here on RUclips so I know things are not great over there at all. It’s kinda ironic though how perspectives change based on where you live because people here are dying to go to the states because they’re tired of the crime and probably more importantly the lack of opportunities. They see the $450 minimum wage (monthly of course) and see that in the states you can (this is what they say not me) make $7 per hour washing dishes, 40 hours a week for a month and earn $1000+ and they say “why am I suffering to be a jobless lawyer when I can wash dishes in the states and make good money?”
      You and I know that’s not the reality and it’s much tougher than that but it’s hard to change the dream that many have to find a better life in a different country, and changing their dream is not my objective anyways. I just want to be realistic. Like sure maybe you’ll make $1000+ washing dishes but $800+ of that goes into your rent. And then what about food? Transportation? Internet? So many things. But I digress.
      Ouch that does sound painful, why are there so many stops? Well if there’s any way to make your flight more comfortable (like those comfy pillows you can buy for flights) then definitely come prepared with those and hopefully when you arrive and have a great time in Ecuador, it will have all been worth it.

    Hey is it safe to come to Ecuador right now? The news makes it seem like there’s murderes everywhere and drug cartel are taking over. Ugh. We’ve been so excited to come visit for a trip next month but now we are second guessing the safety and wondering if it’s safe enough to go?

    • @GMAceM
      @GMAceM  10 месяцев назад +1

      Hello Zabu!
      Safety is a general big topic when it comes to Ecuador and we tend to cover it in some of the livestream and podcast episodes but all of those things are quite long so to give you the TLDR, it’s safe enough to come as long as you go to the right places (cities that are mainly touristic) and take the necessary precautions.
      When it comes to the murders you aren’t likely to experience them/be a part of them unless you’re involved with dangerous people or are actively coming to Ecuador to search for substances. Petty crime is probably the worst thing you’ll experience but once again, only if you’re not cautious.
      I make a mention of safety twice in my most recent Q&A video including what things make you more susceptible to robberies (ruclips.net/video/sat1DLI1b7g/видео.htmlsi=C1tN2qt3rKM6J1St). I also talk about things you can do to avoid putting yourself in danger in my do’s and don’ts video.
      So my verdict is to come to Ecuador for sure, just go to the right places, don’t do things that purposely put you in danger, and prepare well with the other videos on this channel or information from FB groups and such. :)

      Sometimes we do get very into the danger parts in what we say where some might interpret it as fearmongering but it’s more of a sense of fear we live through in the normal city life and it is a valid concern if someone is planning on living in some cities here. We (fellow Ecuador info RUclipsrs) have to be realistic not just for expats or those visiting, but also for those who live here (Ecuadorians overall).
      But if you’re on a trip and come prepared, you’re almost guarantee to be fine. From the sound of things, you’re definitely set to have a great time since you’ll be with guides! If you can ask them to let you try food like encebollado, ceviche, and pan de almidón (among others) please do so! They’re so good!!
      Some Fb groups I recommend are:

      Manta and Manabi Expats and Amigos: m.facebook.com/groups/323275021650751/?ref=share&mibextid=S66gvF
      In this group you’ll find people who are mainly in the Manabi area, even more so in Manta BUT they’re all really nice and some have traveled/been to various parts of the country so you can ask questions there too.

For example if you’ve watched my brother Don’s videos, you’ve seen the results of what free healthcare is like, the conditions aren’t exactly always the best. If I want a private doctor (like I call them or send them a message) to check out a problem I have, then yes I have to pay that doctor their fee. If you go to a public hospital and just want to get a general checkup, then yes it’s free. If you get into a serious car accident and get taken to a hospital, any and all treatment will be 100% free but since hospitals don’t have medicine, they may call your family to get you some (if there’s family to call) and your family will most likely have to pay for that medicine which in turn means it’s technically “not free (?)”. IESS (the government system) is technically not free since you should pay for it every month (or it gets deducted from your salary) BUT if you happen to get into a severe accident and an IESS ambulance is the one that’s called (or happens to drive by) then they will take you and they will attend you FOR FREE. Healthcare is free but paying for IESS means you can schedule appointments and such because even when I was injured when I went to get my cast removed the doctor asked me if I had IESS. I told her no and asked why and she told me that if I did I could’ve scheduled rehabilitation but since I didn’t I either had to do it myself (which I did) or go through a bit of a process with the “centros de salud” (medical centers) to set up rehabilitation appointments.
      So yeah, it’s free but it can be a bit of a mess and I mentioned the value because it’s pretty normal for most people to want to be insured just in case. Alternatively, if you want to be attended immediately then you call or message a doctor and pay that doctor or go through a severe injury and get treated for free.

    $1500 solid life
    $2000 solid middle class
    $3000 upper middle
    $4000+ KING and QUEEN
    These are monthly income and a cushion of maybe $200.

      It’s so cool that you mentioned this because I’m always telling everyone that with $1000 you’re good, but everything over that and you’d live a life of luxury. Like I sometimes have to pinch pennies but with $1000+ I probably wouldn’t know what to do with so much money. Probably just let my parents retire and have fun around Ecuador or even let them take a trip somewhere. They deserve it.
      The cushion is very important, in the interview I had on Don Shader’s channel I even said that it’s very important that the value we give you should definitely add like $500 to it just in case. I’d rather have $500 left over than to be missing $500.

      @@GMAceM Yes, you are a young man and your needs are different than say an elder like myself. There is no point on older folks coming here if they stone cold broke, there are some other countries that would suit better IMO if they are under 1k per month. I like your channel.

    Can I get the job in Ecuador I from Ghana

      Hello! Thanks for your question.
      While I can’t say if the job is or isn’t immediately available because I don’t have access to places that hire in that area, I can say that it is a job that people do here and you could do it. Personally as someone who has an AC and who knows that everyone else does too, it wouldn’t surprise me if tons of people needed their AC’s to get maintenance from time to time, BUT the problem is that most people resort to “freelance workers” (not sure how else to call them) to do things like repair stuff in general and those workers charge very cheap in general.
      Hope that answers your question and thanks for watching! 👏🏼

      I've been to Ecuador and his estimates are pretty much spot on, so I don't know what you're talking about.
