- The cost of living in Ecuador
per month after a year of collecting costs. I love expat life for many reasons, but one of them is the low cost for the quality of life you get. Of all the places I have lived, Quito, Ecuador has the best bang for your buck when it comes to quality of life vs cost of living. It's one of the cheapest places to live in Latin America and South America, and one of the most beautiful. After a year of living in Ecuador, I'm going through the app I use to keep track of my spending, and I'm breaking down the costs to determine how much I spend on: groceries, accommodations, utilities (water, electricity, internet, phone), transportation (both the cost of a vehicle and using taxis and public transit), entertainment (going to movies, going to the bar, eating out), and others (buying things). In the end, I'll tell you how much I spend per month on average to live in Quito, Ecuador.

I'm loving all the content buddy! Please keep it up and looking forward to the next video. I can't wait to get back to Ecuador and enjoy that Quito sunset again with all the nature hikes. Cheers from Canada.
Thanks Tyler! Lately the weather has been incredible. Cotopaxi has been perfectly clear all day. You better get back here before winter hits Canada.
Thanks so much! Great video!👍🏼
I like your video, because I will come to Quito alone for a long time, your video is so useful.
Great to hear! Make sure to learn Spanish ahead of time! It will help you a lot!
Good video. Enjoyed the humor.
Great explanation and informing in brief!!! Really appreciate your job!!! Thank U!!
Enjoyed ;-) Thanks for the info going there soon, Greetings from Tampa, FL
Thanks for all the info. I’m still about a year out from moving down there. Thanks!
I've been pimping this video a bit on some FB groups. Thanks again for the data and nice production value!
I appreciate that. I think I saw it on one of them.
@@itchyfeetonthecheap I've become a cost-of-living nerd. Putting together a Google sheet for Ecuador. From multiple sources. If you'd like to see it, let me know.
Definitely. Can you email it to me at itchyfeetonthecheap@gmail.com
Thanks for the awesome advice.
Single Living in Cuenca 8 years in highrise for $450 month, no aliquota. Disregard what he said about it being more expensive for a single person. Absolutely wrong!! I live in a high quality area, renting a 3 bdrm, 2 bath new apartment with parking garage and storage in a class A building as a single person $450. I live under $1200 USD. Ecuador’s currency is the US dollar.
Uh, so how much would that same apartment cost you if you shared it with another person?
I'm from Ecuador but i live in Guayaquil. Great video. Valid information. I hope that you liked my country, of course its not perfect but it is what it is. 👍
I am loving your country. There's so much to see that I think we're going to stay another couple of years.
@@itchyfeetonthecheap Hey Ryan, great information. Do you mind sharing your full name so that I can find you on FB or messenger. I'm from India and looking to move, so want to know a little more about Quito and jobs and medical expenses etc. Thanks in advance!
@@itchyfeetonthecheap does this mean I get to come and stay with you?
@@MarkSoliday I'm from Ohio and I will be staying in Quito for a few months!
Very good & informative video about Ecuador 🇪🇨.
Very informative video! Good Job!
I appreciate how chill and not fake your delivery is.
Your work is nice and entertaining, loved the 80's sitcom bit! Can you expand your comments on other expenses such as medical needs, insurance needs, charities, and any other type of emergency expenses? Also, while understand this video is dedicated to financial concerns, could you make more videos related to other concerns such as access to medical facilities, Ecuadorian culture that should concern Americans, other considerations that should be as important (if not more) than finances before expatriating to Ecuador? once again, thanks for your production, it was educating, entertaining, and well-worth watching.
You can check out this video ruclips.net/video/umOHvUQWA0Q/видео.html which has my negatives to living in Ecuador. And this video ruclips.net/video/8vYWAOa7o6k/видео.html touches on the medical stuff. I don't have much experience with the medical industry here though.
THANKS for sharing
Great information, thanks for taking the time to detail your expenses (Quito - Quiro?)
"Bed time tuck-in." Dude, your sense of humor is great. And that subtle stuff... chef's kiss!
I think with your knowledge you should provide couple days trips around the country for these who are interested in retiring in Ecuador , people would like to see around and listening I think
Another synonym for your approach to finances is “thrifty” - super thorough breakdown= nicely done !! you must be capricorn star sign (or taurus ?? lol) the sitcom spoof was epic and the hemorrhoids graphic made me lmfao!! giving you the sub for the humor :)
Pisces!
Thanks, Gracias !
Very nice video!
I love your colorful commentary 😝🤣 I actually paid real close attention because I’ll be looking for retirement places down the road & I know I’m not staying in California! So, thanks for a great video! Say Hi to Sara for me! 🤪🙏🏻👍
Thanks! Ecuador would be a great place for you, especially if we're still here! A lot of people are leaving California. Is it because it's going to fall into the ocean?
@@itchyfeetonthecheap LOL...no...the cost of living here is INSANE! I have to shell out $2650/month for a 3 bedroom home. My Electric bill with Edison is an average of $200/month, Internet $85...you get the idea. How's that for accommodation cost?! LOL...If you don't make six figures here, you're poor, simple as that!
😮😮😮
@@TheStoneWhisperer $85 for crappy Internet, am I right?
Ecuador seems pretty cool.
It is
Great Video!! Thanks very much for this. Are the costs you talk about in this vid in USD or CAD?
USD.
Thanks!
Good stuff! Thoughts on Ecuador vs Costa Rica? Pros and cons? My girlfriend and I plan to spend a month in each place winter 2022
Ecuador is a lot cheaper. I only spent about a week in Costa Rica, so I don't know it that well but it was beautiful. I loved it. Bigger mountains in Ecuador, which comes with cooler temps, altitude problems, and better views I guess. Costa Rica is more American, I think. More setup for tourists, more expats living there.
Kool Video
That. was a very good break down of the cost. I am looking for a less exspensive home or that is not as nice. It is just a place to sleep for me..
Thanks for the great videos. I’d love to visit and or live in Ecuador. However I am paralyzed and in a wheelchair. Are the buses wheelchair accessible? I’m from the US and of course here they are. What are your thoughts of a person in a wheelchair vacationing or living in Ecuador?
I don't think they are. A lot of hills in Ecuador. Honestly, I couldn't imagine living there in a wheelchair, but it's hard for me to comprehend in general.
Great info, thanks! How does Sara like teaching there? My wife's in education and I'm starting to research international schools in Ecuador, and a few other locations for her.
She liked it. The kids have a lot of personality. They're a bit lazy though. The good schools are few and far between, and you won't make much money, but you also don't need much money there.
Great video, Go Bills!
Don’t ever loose your humor!! We NEED every laugh we can get!
Great job. Where are you now? Greetings from Dallas, Tx
Still in Quito
Good bubbles impression
I see you save money by wearing the same shirt every video, lol! Joking! Good useful videos and entertainment to boot 🙂🙂🙂

It’s smart because if he forgets to say something and has to dub it in later, he can without us noticing. And less decisions to make when filming, because it’s already stressful enough.
Thank you
Just spent about 2 weeks in Ecuador (wife was born & raised there..but hasn’t lived there since she was 18.) spent most of the time around Guayaquil (Samborondon & via a la Costa / Puerto Azul). Drove to Cuenca and spent a couple of days and did a two-day road trip to Salinas and Olson/Montanita. Not sure how traffic is in Quito, but in Guayaquil the traffic is crazy, drivers are crazier, those on motos/ mopeds, weave in and out of traffic, cut off cars & buses (well everyone cuts everyone else off for that matter), ride in the middle of the lane at 30-40 km/hr.
Es verdad. No respect
How much is healthcare/insurance? Looking at possible partial retirement am 59. To expensive here in the US Healthcare although great quality if you can afford it. Thanks again for the video!
Ed
Coming from Toronto in 2weeks. We hope to run into you!!!
Thanks, I am also frugal. So I could lead a very nice life just on my Social Security of $2 86. That means I should not have to dip into my investments/savings. Thanks again. I am trying to decide between Mexico (non-coastal area) due to wanting to return 2 or 3 times a year to USA for family reasons.
This guy made me laugh, he’s human and doesn’t like things. I enjoy that.
Hey Ryan, in this video, I did not hear you speak about health insurance or medical expenses.
Private health insurance can cost as low as $60 a month. If you get on the public one it's 17.6% of your income, but it covers eye, dental, meds, pretty much everything and with no co-payment.
Thank you for the video, I'm thinking about moving out of the U.S to Ecuador within 4-5 years, this video was helpful. Do you think a person needs to have fluency in spanish to live there?
No. But it helps to learn some basics while you're there.
@@itchyfeetonthecheap Ok, thanks. I'll make sure to learn the basics.
txs your video,i'm planning to imigrate to Ecuador.i'm from China.may i know do you live in which city in China before,Peking or Shanghai ?
I lived in Chengdu. Where are you from?
thank you,,, but i mean no need to show when you vomet inside the flash toilet🤔,,thansk for the info you gave.
Not your Lucky Day but thanks for the Video 😊
Ryan, do you have plans to upload videos on tiktok (CN)?
I don't think so. I just don't have the time, and I don't think it would be worth it. It might drive some traffic to my channel, but you can't really make money off of tiktok like you can RUclips.
stopped working for the man at 38, 15 years ago, living in baja now! not rich at all, same philosophy.
Like the Buffalo bills hat
I will be soon in ecuador ,,too late i got ticket,,I see expencive there,,Rent 400 dollars i got in Canada,,I payed in Ghana 50 dollars per month included utilities ,,big patio , ocean view,,food cost 100 dollars so let say 200 per person not bad standard that time
Great video. It shows your enjoying the country. Hope to retire next year. Couple of quick questions. The $792.33 monthly would be per person ? The $790 for travel would be for the year per person ? You feel safe driving the motorcycle. Would love to get one but people tell me driving down there is crazy. Enjoy your videos
That's right. 792 a month per person, plus 790 per person for all the travel in the year. I feel pretty comfortable on the motorcycle. I would never call the driving crazy, but I lived in Vietnam. I've seen the aftermath of maybe 5 accidents here, mainly on roads that have lots of turns going down a mountain. That being said, it's probably at least twice as dangerous as the driving I've done in Canada.
You mention the valley. What is the town you live in or the section of Quito?
Cumbaya and Tumbaco are the places that people often refer to as the valley when talking about the Quito area. There's also Valle de Los Chillos. The majority of expats live in Cumbaya though.
@@itchyfeetonthecheap Thanks for the info.
Bills Fan? I'm in Western NY, trying to find my way out!!
Huge Bills fan since I was around 6.
That’s amazingly cheap vacation expenses 👍🏾
Working for "the man" isn't all that it's cracked to be. But anywho, are you glad you left China? Also, I miss your last intro, that was my jam 😁!!!
why Glad because of China?
Am I glad I left? I don't regret it, but I do miss it.
@@itchyfeetonthecheap All the best on your continued journeys. Godspeed.
Argo dude is my spirit animal.
You're funny!
I'm confused... are the numbers at 15:47 the total for both of you, or per person? A month's groceries for two only $174? Also, no cable or internet is listed, or any kind of medical insurance. You are right, sigh, about 1 person vs 2, because 2 can split things like rent, utilities, Internet and such. Kudos for keeping up with your spends.
It's for 1 person. I mentioned internet... $28 per month or $14 each. I don't have cable or medical insurance.
@@itchyfeetonthecheap Thx. $800 seemed like a lot for rent, which is why I was wondering.
Yeah, it is. We live in a really nice complex though. Had to select a place before we even came to Ecuador, so gringo prices for sure and we only had 3 options to choose from.
In you opinion what is the possibility a 33 yo with about 200k after he sells his car and some furniture, to Live in Ecuador if he plans to work online but only earn jist guessing like 1000k a month? I want to buy real estate. Loved the video especially the 90s sitcom part 😆. It seems doable but im worried I'm missing something. Most videos I find online about Ecuador are directed to planning to retirees
I think it's totally doable. Finding land to buy might be challenging, but there's a lot of info out there about foreigners that have done it. Look up Mr Second Passport and Fall Off The Map on RUclips.
Your addons are really funny
"....frugal...." Great.... Funny..... 👌 I hear ya. ...loud 'n clear......
I'm so tired of the cold. Necesito Calor.
Nice video how much does it cost to live in Cuenca
Apparently about 10-15% less
Quito has everything including IMAX and comic book stores.. soon a subway if its not there yet
The sandwich shop or the transportation system? One is coming soon. The other is just down the street from me.
Tacky
I love how RUclips informs me that this comment was edited. I'd like to think that it once said "awesome", but in all likelihood you probably just misspelled your 1 word comment.
@@itchyfeetonthecheap Nope
Are you sure about the car prices? I think you’ll find that a brand new Toyota Corolla costs a lot more than 27k
I got the info from this site www.toyocosta.com/vehiculo/Autos/Toyota/COROLLA/15#cotizar
You forget to mention the health care insurance
9:23 Mini Cooper !
monthly health insurance?
I'm not sure. I don't bother with it.
Hey R. Are you talking Canadian or U.S. $$ ?
US.

So... You didn't usually use WhatsApp until you arrived to Ecuador?
No. In Canada I used Facebook Messenger, in Vietnam I just texted, in China it's WeChat... Also using Telegram now. Way too many messenging apps!
Buy peanuts and a ninja. Don't add oil just pile in the peanuts and blend and it'll come out just like jiff
YESHUA GOD ALMIGHTY bless you

Hi
Can I get veteran medical coverage their
I'm not sure, but you can setup an appointment with the Federal Benefits Unit in Quito or Guayaquil by e-mailing them at fbuquito@state.gov.
You can save money by not eating as often and eating smaller portions
Ayo what tf is that thing at the top of the pic at 13:39 ? 🤣🤣🤣 Are those... "plugs" that plug into your phone 🤣🤣
To be honest I don't know what that thing is or what you plug it into.
I have hemorrhoids. What do you suggest?
Poke them with a hot poker.
Excellent video! A fellow penny pincher!
As a Candian (spoiled by your health care system) though, you forgot to mention the cost of health insurance and medical care. Health insurance and medical care costs are of salient concern to those south of Canada's wall! Any inputs on that? Maybe you have health insurance covered via your wife's job?
From what I understand, you can get Health insurance for as low as $35 a month, but that's for the very basics.
Could easily be up to 75usd
How did she get a teaching job there?
Got her teaching degree, taught for 5 years internationaly, found a job ad online and applied for it.
Is this US dollars?
Yes. Ecuador's currency is the US dollar.
If you're a meat eater or vegetarian makes a difference!
The things they eat there 👀
0y I do have Hemorrhoids. How much is the hem cream over there?
You can probably put a post online somewhere and find someone to apply some for free.
@@itchyfeetonthecheap I bet.
What ??? My Wife's sister earns $400 a month including mortgage food bills and everything else and she lives in San Rafael and is a Headteacher. You have no idea....
It’s impossible to earn $400 a month in San Rafael unless she works part time even minimum wage full time is 3times that
It's good you got a girlfriend. Hopefully I can manage to get one soon too! I met a girl recently but she didn't text me back after a few days. I'll keep trying and hopefully can be like you too!

Usd. Ecuador uses usd as their currency.
Cute-z and vulgar. It's hard to keep watching your videos. That said you do present simple, clear, uncomplicated and valuable information. I'll keep tuning in as long as I can stand it. No likes and definitely no subscribe. Hmmm. Maybe tune in from time to time to see if anything changed. Apart from cute-z and vulgar I do like your presentation.
wow less than 1k for two people. this just makes me want to retire early aboard
