Cumbaya & the Tumbaco Valley - Where the Expats Live in Ecuador

  • Expat living in Ecuador has become more and more popular over the last decade. Americans looking for a beautiful and cheaper place to retire come to Ecuador to enjoy life. One of the most popular places for an expat to live in Ecuador is Cumbaya - located in the Tumbaco valley just outside of Quito proper. It's away from the hustle and bustle of Quito. The altitude is lower and it's usually 2-5 degrees Celsius warmer. The main square, Parque de Cumbaya, is a beautiful place to sit and enjoy Ecuador's amazing weather. A lot of Ecuador's upper class live in Cumbaya and commute to Quito everyday for their work, but it also has some authentic Ecuador charm, especially along the main street.
Further east from Quito is Tumbaco, another great option for people looking to live close to Quito, but not in the city. It's even warmer in Tumbaco, with pretty much ideal growing temperatures, which means a lot of amazing locally grown fruits and vegetables. It also feels a bit more Ecuadorian, less expat, more middle class.
Overlooking the entire Tumbaco valley is Ilalo, an extinct volcano. Ilalo volcano is my view. I see it everyday and it always seems to look different. In this video I decide to ride my motorcycle up Ilalo, along a road that I've always wondered about, to see if I can get an amazing view of Cumbaya and the valley. I don't really know the way, but the journey will be awesome.

Interesting to see tumbaco and cumbaya. Whenever I’m in Quito it’s always “over there” and our hosts never thought it worthy of a visit. It’s always Ambato or other local market towns that we end up at.
I appreciate your going into the geologic and historical background if the places you visit; it really adds a great perspective to wherever you’re at.

This was so nice to watch. Memories for us from when we lived in Lomas de Monteserrin in Quito 2016-2018. We would take the bus down to for the movie theater. Really good bread store down in Cumbaya too! Hope to be back soon. Awwww I miss that bird sound!!! Such a sweet bird I don't know what it was called but it always sounds like it's whistling at you.

At 13:22 on the top left of the inage you can see that pointy mountain. Its called "cerro la Marca" wich means the mark. It is called like that because it used to be an ancient reference for native people that wanted to find "mitad del mundo" the place where equator line is. It is located north of the monument where the real equator is.

hi there, can you tell me more about the coldest and cheapest place(cost of living) monthly rent, utilities etc.. in Ecuador?

    • @Maroma5361
      @Maroma5361 3 года назад +3

You can live in a nice apartment for around 400-500 dollars in the city of Quito. Of course you can get cheaper but 400 is like middle-class. Utilities are cheap. Power would be 5-10 dollars per month per person, water is cheaper. If you’re looking for a cold place there a lot of towns in the andes colder than Quito, but Quito has several neighborhoods that are cold. All Houses are made of concrete so they are fresh even in hot days. No need for a/c.

I only had it for a year, but I didn't have any problems. It's 250cc. I drove it up mountains with 2 people and luggage. It's not super fast but it gets you where you need to go. Max speed is like 90 km/hr I'd say.

You should have asked me this last night as I was walking from Quito to Cumbaya down the side of a highway because my Uber canceled 15 minutes before the 8:00 curfew, cars whizzing by me as I thought about how covid19 probably doesn't care what time it is... or when I went to the grocery store, which was packed because it was Friday and no one is allowed to leave their house on Saturday and Sunday. "Let's get everyone to go out at the same time instead of spreading them out. That will help curb covid." To answer your question, I'm frustrated with how poorly this country is run.

      @@itchyfeetonthecheap
I feel you, and I'm sad that you had to experience that. We all know we have incompetent politicians. But, on the other hand, there is not a single country that has taken COVID-19 seriously, each and every one of the countries failed a simple task, that of not being overconfident. It's not just the politicians of our country, it's just human stupidity at its finest.
Remember when doctors, scientists and WHO were telling people that covid-19 was not so dangerous, later that we should not wear masks because they did not protect us at all, French doctors even promoted the use of certain drugs not studied and even Trump promoted its use.
This pandemic only showed that no matter how many scientists, literary professionals, historians and postgraduates we have, we will always be overconfident, we feel invincible but we are a failure because as a society we do not make decisions together, each one lives in their own world and many opportunities are wasted. It did not matter how this pandemic made us suffer in a similar way to all countries, it did not matter that we finally have a common enemy, we continue to see each of us as enemies rather than help.
Even when choosing our leaders, generally most humans and ecuadorians are no exception, choose our leaders based on passions, Lenin has never been intelligent, regardless of the ideology he chooses at any moment. But even acknowledging that he was an idiot, many people chose him, because they saw in Correa, a demagogue leader whom to idolize, and it almost happen again, this time with Arauz.
To think that we can have a perfect politician is utopian, first the people must be more reasonable and less passionate, rather than asking those who govern them to be reasonable for them. Even now that Guillermo Lasso has won the presidency, Correa's lovers still want to tackle him in every step he takes. That's the moment when you realize that the real reason we don't have great leaders is because great minds know that ruling an ignorant, selfish and passionate country is shooting at oneself. Conservative populists such as Trump Followers in USA or Leftists Correa's followers in Ecuador do not live or let live, because they believe in democracy, just until the very moment that the one who wins is not a populist and demagogue or he simply doesn't comply with their excentricities.
Werever you go, you'll find stupid people with stupid leaders, but focus on the places were even being sourrounded by stupid people and politicians, you can find after all that you also feel good with your life. As ecuadorians we don't even get a little bit frustrated in long terms not even with all the bad things that we experience daily, we know that life in Ecuador is good after all the things, and we will fight to always make it better. I know that you have a really open mind and I'm sure you will understand this one day.
Wish you, Ryan and Sara the best, on your next adventures.
I know that you are just trying to finally figure out what living in this world is really about, and Ecuador is a must on that journey.
