Just a tip from my Irish grandmother - always put a peeled onion in the boiling water for the potatoes. Discard when potatoes are done. It really adds a lot of flavor.

I love that idea, I usually toss in whole garlic cloves and mash along with the potatoes, but I like the onion tip. Thank you. 😊
The pleasure is all mine! The onion doesn't add 'onion' flavor - it really adds an umami-like taste. You're mashed potatoes will have an unknown (except to you) depth of flavor that will really make a difference. I thought everyone knew this!
Good tip, Irish grandmother! You can also make a sort of extract by simmering onion, as well as things like garlic, bay leaf and white pepper corns, in the milk, until the milk is infused with all those flavors, then goes into the potatoes.
Here's a tip from my grandmother. Don't pour the potato water down the drain, it contains nutrients and flavor. Use it to make gravy for your meat and/or potatoes, bouillon can be added also. If not making gravy, reserve and refrigerate or freeze for use in soups.
I just want you to know ever since I discovered your channel a few months ago, I have made many of your dishes and all have been delicious! You have an awesome cooking channel...., and my husband thanks you too lol.
I always use evaporated milk. My On and Grandmother always fixed mashed potatoes that way. I think it adds a lot of flavor to the potatoes that you really can't get from milk or heavy cream. Now I want some Meat loaf, mashed potatoes gravy, and green beans! Lol!!
Awesome awesome content. I just bought everything from the store. I’m making my parents this dinner this week. Thank you very much. God Bless you & your family.
This video was awesome. I always wanted to know how to make gravy from broth that actually tastes good! Who knew my mom fed me "shocked" potatoes for 30 years! 😁 I'm guilty of serving them myself. Never too late to learn something better!

What an easy-peasy gravy recipe. It looks like I am going to try your gravy pretty soon. I like your idea of two different broths, a nice touch. Thanks Angelica! Have a nice day!
Great gravy recipe, simple. And the chick and beef stock great idea! .....cold day, comfort food Sunday, Mama’s meatloaf and gravy. Sweet potato mashed and peas. Thanks Mama!
I'm so glad that I came across your channel yesterday looking for Mac and cheese! Now I am looking at your mashed potatoes and gravy video! Next, will be your meatloaf! Hello from Fall River, Massachusetts! Keep up the good work!
Just saw this video. And naturally I got into the kitchen and started peeling potatoes. As I'm mashing the potatoes, I add room temperature salted butter. If any body wants them saltier, they can do it on their own. Then evaporated milk (makes it creamier). And am going to make that gravy. Looks great. Want to try these out first. Will let give my opinion after my taste test. Thank you.

Yum! Evaporated milk is definitely a great choice. Nice! 👍
I normally use heavy cream in my potatoes and I see you put that in the written recipe. Looks delicious! Thank You! I’ve never used kitchen bouquet and will definitely try it next time. I also let my flour brown and when the gravy is up to temp. I’ll add a Tbsp of heavy cream.
I love all your videos and I LOVE a good Meatloaf. I will be making this recipe, soon. FYI: if you take your grates off your stove put them upside down inside a ziplock bag with about 1/2 C ammonia, leave them over night you will be amazed how easy they are to clean the next day. Anything that is enamaled can be cleaned this way. I used this method on my old stove all the time, I even poured ammonia in the "wells" and covered them over with Press 'n Seal plastic wrap, left it overnight and the wells wiped clean in the morning.
OK then! Well, when can you move in? The meatloaf cinched it! You can have a big sunny room a beautiful antique bed AND a pony!!! ❤️❤️❤️❤️waiting...😆‼️YUM!!!!
Thank you so much for the very detailed and informative step by step guide on how to make mashed potatoes with gravy!!! This has to be my top most favorite recipe and video on RUclips! ❤
There's something I do to make a quick chicken gravy which is really good and it's so simple. I just put 2 cups of chicken broth, and I add a teaspoon of Dill and then some cream or milk if you want maybe a quarter cup and let it boil down just a tiny bit, and then serve it over your chicken... it's absolutely delicious.
Gochujang Mamá, I'm impressed that, in addition to the Mexican and Asian food you cook, you make this kind of garden-variety, white-bread American food - meatloaf, mashed potatoes & gravy, peas - you really have range.
Hey, not sure where you are but here in the UK mashed potatoes and gravy are things we cook most days (though not with meatloaf which is virtually unknown here). Some people make a fancier gravy if they are having a roast meat dinner, using the meat juices, flour and stock but 90% of the time we have some kind of "instant gravy granules" in the cupboard. The best known one is Bisto but there are many others to choose from - chicken, beef, turkey (around Christmas) and even vegetarian. They nearly all look as good as yours when they are made up but still taste great with mashed potatoes. Gravy browning, does exist in case the roast dinner one comes out too pale.
i always wondered what was in the mysterious 'brown gravy.' i recall being at a hardee's on a road trip in the south and asking what kind of gravy was on the mashed potatoes and the clerk said "the brown kind." we yanks were amused by that, as we know of gravy as being chicken or beef, not just a color. but now i know it's kitchen bouquet that makes it brown, it makes more sense!
Tried ur recipe. I'm African so I used our kinds of seasonings n boy oh boy, was it gud! Thnx a million. I chopped up some habaneros too n added to the meatloaf.

Looks delicious and very satisfying. I love that you know about Kitchen Bouquet. Many have never heard of it. Try it on a pot roast. You’ve taught me a lot. Merry Christmas to you and your family 🎄🥰
Wow this lady is like a master chef confined to her home making gourmet dish’s in small batches during the pandemic the meatloaf is probably pretty ass kicking also !!
I never usually like this kind of gravy but yours looks delicious. I like how it is not thick. It has a great consistency to it. Will try your recipe for the meatloaf, mashed potatoes and the gravy.
Growing up my grandma never told anyone her secret to her brown gravy. I was 24 before she told me her secret was Kitchen Bouquet. I made meatloaf and mashed potatoes before the hurricane hit NC. I made my gravy using bullion granules. I made a mistake and grabbed to chicken and tomato instead of chicken. It turned out fabulous. I use a lot of evaporated milk too. My husband prefers when I use it in potatoes, he says it makes them creamier.

Gosh, I am glad you are safe. I know all too well how scary hurricanes can be. BTW happy mistakes are the best sometimes even in gravy. :)
We did better than others. We didn't lose anything but power. We have a soggy yard. But less than a mile from our house is under water. I'm glad we have power back, because having 2 preteens and no internet wasn't going well. We're so thankful right now. Mathew devastated our county, and now Florence is too. If you see Lumberton, NC I'm 20 miles north of there. I cant get to my 24 yr old's house. I cant get to half my friends. The roads are blocked by water, power lines, trees, missing road and the National Guard. My husband and our 12 yr old went and volunteered today and almost couldn't make it home because they closed the road to everyone but residents.

Oh gosh! That was us during Hurricane Harvey. We were fortunate to temporarily lose power, but no flooding. Half a mile down the road houses flooded horribly and roads were blocked all around us. I unfortunately had family on the other side of town that lost cars and houses. It was madness. My heart goes out to you and all affected. 💖
I donated to one of the fundraisers for Harvey. I donated 4 Sam's Sized cases of water. A church group was trying to fill a semi to get down there. The Cajun Navy has been here doing rescues. I can honestly say we did a lot better this time, than we did with Mathew. We had nothing during Mathew. We were recovering from a house fire 6 months prior. My husband worked nights, I was in cosmetology school, we had zero time to prep. But I had a gut feeling, so I've spent months getting supplies, propane tanks for the camp stove, turkey fryer and grill, gas for the generator, charcoal for the smoker, we were set. Only 2 things I forgot, oil for the storm lamps and batteries for the camping lanterns. And since we were so prepared, I plan on donating to one of the shelters. We may not have much, but I don't want to see a family go hungry, not when I can help and we thrived through this.
Love the gravy Tip... I have always made my tatoes that way and yes they are great, add some fresh parsley flakes for a bit of flavor. Just an extra Tip.
Growing up, my mom always used Kitchen Bouquet for making brown gravy. I never knew otherwise until I was in my 30's and someone laughed and said, "No, that's what the meat/pan drippings were for...(duhh... don't you know how to cook?!)" Glad to see other good cooks using the " gravy browner in a bottle"!
adding salt at the start of cooking, as well as cloves of garlic, both to your usual taste, allows the flavors to absorb into the potatoes as they cook...I find I dont need to add as much salt while mashing them and the cooked garlic dissolves away...definitely going to try the onion next time! awesome cooking, this christmas my family is going to have a TAMALE making party! Ojas away!🤞🏻👍🏻 I am Mexican Irish...Maria Murphy, lol....and Kitchen Bouquet is the secret my mom told me! makes stews look so good, too!

Mouthwatering! And thank you for the tip about heating up the butter and milk. I'm sure that really helps to keep the potatoes nice and hot.
Smart Blonde Heating them keeps the potatoes creamy & not gluey.
I love the flavor evaporated milk gives mashed potatoes! …another yummy recipe with excellent tips for a new cook! 💗 Thanks!
What an easy-peasy gravy recipe.

I like your idea of two different broths, a nice touch.

My favorite American meal. Except we have green beans instead of peas. Green beans with sauteed onions and garlic, salt and lots of pepper, yum yum.
When I made this last year for thanksgiving, I added flour to thicken it more. It came out super good and it was all gone by the end of the night 😭🫶🏼
Whoooaaaa.... that was amazing. I asked about brown gravy for the meatloaf and in moments it appeared. Thank you!!!!!!!!!!
