  • In this episode, Fully Charged Show’s CEO Dan Caesar steps back into the hot seat again to talk about the success of Fully Charged LIVE South in Farnborough and everything you might not know about the upcoming Harrogate show, the first Fully Charged LIVE show up North ever!
As Harrogate is hotting up, Robert talks about his recent trip to Norway, the FT’s Future of the Car event, V2G and there’s some gleeful confusion about the difference between the McMurtry Speirling and Munro EVs, which are both pretty excellent in their own right.

Your observation regarding 'bad actors' and 'nonsense stories' pushed by organisations and people with vested interests caught my attention. I couldn't agree more and, like you, I have noticed that they are coming through with increasing regularity as the profitability of fossil fuels comes under threat. Not only is this an incidious disinformation campaign, but tragically it's succesful with some sections of society. The conservative parties of Australia have been passed masters of failing to support the production and use of renewable energy. We are indeed fortunate to have people such as yourselves and so many others around the planet, who help to keep the discourse balanced, thank you!

50:37 Gentlemen my heart skipped a beat when you were discussing the viability of freight containers filled with batteries. I see so many ways these portable power systems can be deployed during natural disasters, backup for hospitals, or command and control operations. They would be filler for gaps in car charging routes through under developed areas. I am hoping that Polyjoule continues to develop a more energy dense chemistry to go with their no cooling requirements.
Thanks so much for your efforts in bringing us this venue for energy-related dialog.

Please keep us informed about new stuff. Not only is it interesting and uplifting to see what may come, but it also gives these start ups valuable exposure which just might be the difference between success and failure.
You touched on a point I had never thought of concerning battery swapping. Of course they can be very gently charged can't they? I think batteries are robust enough that most wouldn't benefit (but would from the ten minute swap), but for some sectors, as you said, UBER and taxis, it could extend the life of the battery from perhaps eight years to.....forever.

But RE the solar panels on car discussion: Would you pay *extra* for a car with solar panels or would you rather put that money to better use?
The panels are not free even if included in the price.
They will add complexity to the vehicle, making it much more costly to repair when damaged - not to mention more likely to be written off in an accident. This will likely push up premiums on cars that contain them, as it's something that insurance companies will have to factor in to their costing.
They will also likely not add much range in places like the UK, where the amount of time spent in direct sunlight is likely to be very low.
Of course there will be exceptions to this depending on where your car is usually parked when not in use, but mostly it is a gimmick for this part of the world, as they will be sat in the dark.

Sadly will not be with you at Harrogate in my new MG ZS EV, which is a great car. On longer trips I’ve taken to keeping a tally of EVs by just counting the green stripes. I’m noticing already that the count keeps rising steadily, and that the variety of models I spot keeps going up too. On a typical two-hour journey it is usually 20-30 EVs total, of which around 50% are Teslas, but maybe that’s because they are so easy to recognise. A very unscientific survey, I know, but it keeps me amused on a long trip. Have a great show in the North.

I like the idea of PV on cars, but I also recognize that there may be a better place to put PV panels. For example a panel may generate more energy if it is on the roof of a house, and that energy could then be sent to the grid via a net metering setup. If a PV panel is on a car that is parked in the shade or is on a fully charged car in the sun, then the panel is not being used to its full advantage. We need to use our limited resources to best advantage.

Thank you for the great videos and content.
Solar panels on cars seems like a really interesting possibility. You even see this as an option on the up and coming Toyota Prius Prime. The laws of thermodynamics tend to nullify a lot of what seem like good ideas.
How much gain do you actually get from solar panels on a car roof when you take into consideration the offset of the extra weight that it adds to the vehicle, the loss of energy as the energy is passed from the panel and through the system to the battery and finally the loss as that energy is again discharged to drive the car (battery to electric motor(s) to the drivetrain). After all loss throughout the system occurs, is the energy gained worth the added cost and weight to the vehicle?
I do like that the new Prius Prime seems to be using the solar panel's enery gain to power small accessories in the car and offload those from the main battery pack. This seems like a much more feasible usage, if the added weight is not to significant.

**WARNING** … if I see you at Harrogate … look out for an old guy with a black Fully Charged cap on, who might just approach you and give you a big Bro-Hug! Truth is I got solar and a BEV before I got hooked on and became a subscriber/supporter of the Fully Charged show. Now have a Powerwall and a Tesla and continue in a quest to reduce our carbon emissions and save more energy. However, several years before all this, I recall seeing some journalist or other coming to Robert’s house to talk about your love of the EV (you had your old Model S at the time) and renewable stuff. Who was that and what programme, I cannot remember. Anyway, that stuck in my mind and, for me too, you continue not only to be a huge influence and resource on all things electric, but above all that and the cr*p that’s going on in a fossil-fuelled world, you provide such an enjoyable relief with your self-deprecating humour and humility. Long, long may your messages of ‘Fully Charged’ / ‘Everything Electric’ / ‘Stop Burning Stuff’ / ‘Stop the FUD’ continue to have its huge influence on those who still doubt and on saving the human race from self-combusting … !!

@@rogerstarkey5390 Not at all. The Model Y is an SUV with a bigger frontal area. And the greater grounds clearance also causes more drag. Whereas, most modern estates have great aero efficiency, much like the custom built Model S estate that was lighter and more aerodynamic than the Model S it was based on.

Unless the price comes down by at least 20% were stuffed. BYD has been a disaster in mainland Europe because of the ‘car stealers’ (dealers) + Import duty + VAT. That was a fiasco. Carbon capture, hydrogen and bio fuels can all help towards net zero, providing they’re done responsibly. The problem I have is that every time I’ve looked at them it’s taken me to the feet of the oil and gas men. Carbon capture = Oil industry using the captured carbon for fracking and flushing out oil. Hydrogen = over 95% of hydrogen produced produced by the oil industry. Bio fuels = only 7% of your gas tank containing ethanol, so that “green fuel” requires 93% gas/oil. Having said all that there is some fantastic work being done. UTAH for example are building the worlds largest Electrolysis plant (need that to produce green hydrogen) and I believe they’re powering that by solar and wind. Pink hydrogen is going to have to be made (yes, cleaner than green hydrogen). I see the future as mini nuclear power stations rockin up on large transporters and powering steel works etc etc, and airports - hydrogen for planes (the ‘Pink” mini nuclear powers the electrolysis plant then they use the hydrogen for the planes). The critical thing for hydrogen is that it’s close to where you want to use it, storing and transporting hydrogen a nightmare. Really impracticable for cars and even lorries (Tesla?). So yes, you can and should use all of these green ‘powers’, and there are excellent conditions to use them, but we’ve got to wake up to the oil and gas industry because they’re going to hold everyone back. Profits before progress and health. The problem of course will then become more acute if a country has been ‘talking the talk’ but not ‘walking the walk’ as they end up in an economic crisis. Exactly what Legacy motors are heading towards. Not good on a whole number of levels. Excited about the changes, a little concerned at the greedy causing mayhem.

@@russellvatcher4753 No, but I think bamboo is a fantastic source of materials. It grows fast it can be turned into so many things. Its outside is hard because it has silica.
I know of one highrise building in Sydney made from mainly engineered timber. It went up faster and with less disruption to surrounding buildings and roads. It wasn't the first in the world, I think there is one in Chicago and a few in Europe. They are made in factories and then put together on-site. Burning Hydrogen in Small Engines is just nuts. But in large shipping maybe. Biofuels made from algae is a must for flying long haul. The algae can be grown in saltwater so it won't take the land away from growing food.

    • @rogerstarkey5390
      @rogerstarkey5390 Год назад +1

The trouble with Hydrogen for shipping?
      .
You (still) need 3x the green energy to liberate it.
      .
That "liberation" must be available either on board (where does the energy come from?)
      Or
At any port the vessel may visit.
      .
The local grid generation at those locations must be sufficient to support production AND that grid must be "green".
      .
The vessel (unless I'm mistaken?) Will still need a "battery buffer" between the fuel cell system and the drive motors.

If I understand correctly, when used for land vehicles, transport of hydrogen from place of production to place of use, requires about 20x the volume of road tanker capacity to move the same energy as fossil fuels?
That means, unless it's produced at the dock, a similar increase in capacity is required with associated road traffic, pollution (?) cost and fleet maintenance.
It also means 10x storage volume on the vessel (!)
      .
Then I noticed you specify "BURNING" hydrogen in small engines....."
Are you suggesting these ships use an internal combustion engine?
      .
That's taking an inefficient storage medium and applying it to an inefficient drive unit.
It would be well below 20% overall system efficiency.
      .
Use in large vessels actually *magnifies* the problem!

@@rogerstarkey5390 Yes, it takes a lot of energy to split water but in time we should build a lot of extra none greenhouse pollution generation. Sth Korea and Japan are steering their countries to be all in on Hydrogen. I think for storage and transportation it will probably be in the form of ammonia as it is easier. Also, ammonia is wildly used in manufacturing. Ammonia can be used as fuel in diesel engines that power those huge ships, the NOx problem is solved by injecting small amounts of ammonia into the hot exhaust.
Of course, this will take time and a lot of money to do. Maybe New ships will be built with small nuclear power plants. But something will have to be done as shipping has a large pollution footprint.

It "gives back" 5 units (discounting storage/ transport losses)

But hydrogen is going to be a thing as I have stated Sth Korea and Japan are going ahead with it. I'm not arguing for it, Jesus Christ. But if it is going to happen then it has to be transported and it is easier to move it coupled with nitrogen! Ammonia is moved around on our roads now. But I suspect that if the show were held near Edinburgh, you might be complaining that it should be entitled "Fully Charged Scotland" or "Fully Charged Central Belt". As for "a bit less South", well Yorkshire is about half way up the British mainland, so isn't in the south by any means. The fact is that there are probably about 15 million people living within a couple of hours of Harrogate, and maybe 5 million within within a couple of hours of Ingleston.

The even darker secret is that using green energy to liberate hydrogen is still dirty, since it requires three times the green energy to (for instance) move a comparable vehicle a given distance.

Result? Two parts (66%) of that energy could have been used to directly displace fossil fuel generation elsewhere on the grid.

Hydrogen from any source results in the grid remaining dirty.

All of which contributes both directly & indirectly to carbon emissions from the soil & supply chains in addition to killing off the microorganisms in the soil that perform a crucial role in water & nutrients uptake by plants, most of which are food for humans & animals alike.
Despite what many proponents of these fuel types would have us believe, they're essentially just a continuation of the business as usual model that so many companies & individuals have vested interests in.
