Thank you guys. My wife and I have bought our first ever EV since the Harrogate show, significantly this is after 40+ years of driving. Onwards and upwards.

To help attendance, I would suggest having one at the begining of the summer and the other at the end of the summer! The 2 shows in the UK I feel were too close to one another! I walk around the car stalls and found most did not know anything about bidirectional charging, or had very limited knowledge.
The general knowlage about the products on their stands were average to poor. So many of the people suposedly selling or premoting the vehicles knew little about them. I would have expected the people to spend perhaps a couple of hours getting to know what they were selling. One stand (selling a power diverter simalar to the Myenergy Eddie) who knew little to nothing about it. Would I buy one? Err an unbranded Chinese "product" for £275.. against the eddie for maybe 50% more.. well thats a no brainer. House fires frequently cause a bad day.
@@williamarmstrong7199 I wondered that as well. The exhibition hall had maybe 15 different stands with their version of a charging point, a couple with a box or two extra to 'integrate' things. Now, aside from those with industrial-level 3-phase AC and fast/rapid DCFC chargers, which really knew their market, I wondered how many of them would be around in 5 years or so. I'm not sure there's the interconnection standards out there yet, and if those on the budget end would even software-patch that sort of thing in the future (or would it be like Android phones, where devices get abandoned after maybe 2-3yrs). The Myenergi system makes much more sense at the moment, especially with the libbi home battery including an inverter for solar PV - connect the panels directly to it, one less thing to try to sort out. I ALWAYS look forward to the Double R's Show; sounds like a good name for a podcast in its own right.😅 Highly entertaining, never failing to be hilarious and informative.
If you're still wondering about the potential savings with an EV, consider this. In 2017, we purchased a used 2014 Nissan Leaf. Since then we've driving about 80,000 miles locally and our total cost for maintenance and dealer visits is about 500.00 plus tires. Five years with no brake repair, no tuneups, no oil changes. Think about it.
I am a happy EV owner (Hyundai Ioniq), but let’s be honest, to really offset the purchase cost of an EV (even 2nd hand) compared to an ICE, the running costs aren’t enough. You have to include the resale value, which, even at 50-60% of the original purchase value, will leave you better off than holding on to an ICE car that won’t be worth much in 2-5 years time because no one will be able to drive anywhere with them without being charged, taxed, etc.
I suspect that clever podcast Roger mentioned where they talk ecomics of renewables is The Energy Gang. Coincidentally, Jigger Shaw is a former host of The Energy Gang. Really great conversations happening there.
Over four years ago when I bought my Kona E here in Québec I only noticed the occasional other E V on the road, now they are everywhere and from every known manufacturer ( except the Chinese brands). Plus, circa 95% of our electricity is created from renewable sources, mainly Hydro. The transformation is staggering !😮😅

13:44 Robert, there's a 200-mile zone that belongs to neighbouring countries. That's an awful lot of undersea territory, any body of water that's less than 400 miles wide is owned, which leaves the centres of the Atlantic, the Pacific & the Indian Oceans.
International waters are two thirds of the ocean (and 50% of the earth's surface area) - that leaves a lot of scope for potentially less-regulated activity!

@@judebrown4103 I understand that 🙂 Sociology is just a big interest of mine so I'm always thinking about these sorts of questions. Historically there's been a lot of silly stereotypes about women and cars, and I suspect Robert's comments are in light of that (that he's aware of the stereotype, not believing in it). We are both of an age that would recall when those stereotypes had more cultural strength In any event, I'm a little shocked that my Ice Warrior avatar didn't automatically suggest my femininity 😛
@@crowfoot1199 I know what you mean, I'm of Robert's vintage too and I don't think he believes in the stereotype either but is clearly aware of it, I think he has a daughter and I always think dad's of daughters 'get it'. Personally I've experienced the effects of that stereotyping at the sharp end having been the second bus driver in London who wasn't a man, back in the eighties. The goggle-eyed looks you got on climbing down from the cab having taken someone from, say, Finsbury Park to Smithfield was priceless.😂 Now of course we're two a penny and no-one turns a hair, thank goodness. Edit: nearly forgot, I use my little mobile phone and wasn't aware of your marvelous avatar until you mentioned it.👏😄 ( I'm not familiar with these things so if there is a particular symbolism I'm probably missing I'm afraid! 🥴)
I keep thinking "if I provide services to the grid, I'm using up some of the lifetime of my battery." But then I recall that some batteries can outlive the cars they're in, and batteries can often degrade from calendar aging before they degrade from use. Sooo, there is actually an opportunity for grid (and microgrid--personal/behind-the-meter) services to more efficiently use this material and energy! Now, how do we measure this battery usage, to confirm our accounting? It's clear BMSes (in cars and otherwise) need a total-energy-delivered "kwhr odometer." (They should also have a total-energy-received meter and it should only ever read, as a system health indicator, marginally greater than the delivery kwhr-odometer, but I don't want to belabor this.) TLDR we need to be sure our cars have kwhr-odometers generally but especially when involved in v2g.
for information, you can swap iPhone batteries for new ones. Either in person at an Apple Store or via mail. It costs £50-£70 depending on the phone model and takes 45-60 min. I have been holding on to two 4 years old iPhones that have undergone a batterie swap each.
So Tesla aside, some of the other manufacturers seem to have a pretty rapid drop of in range as the battery ages, how would vehicle to grid affect that?
Solar is getting bigger - exponentially, as the manufacturing costs of solar panels has dropped 95% since 2010... and our government is now pursuing hydrogen. What fools. The cost of a kWh of electricity in the UAE is 7 pence. UK is over 60 pence.
We need solar PV subscriptions for EV Charging, fixed rate for 25 years cheaper per kWh then we pay now. Large Shared Solar is 50% cheaper than solar on your roof....
12:23 I have yet to see anyone take up the challenge but it *IS* possible to recycle Diesel fuel, even if it was recycled to start with (& yes, recycled materials are used as Diesel fuel). Oil refineries are that sophisticated & have been for decades, possibly a century or more. The problem is that even on full throttle what goes through the combustion chambers is less than 7% fuel & when the throttle is closed it's pure air, it's _uneconomic_ to recycle not impossible.
Well its all good and well this V to G. But as long as CCS is not accepted as defined standard and just based on protocols and no infrastructure is readily available and supported by energy companies it will remain 10 years away. V to H is a lot closure. It is a great idea… just not enough government / regulatory push behind it. … still hope it comes though.
How do you get there? EV Autonomy Reduce the global fleet by 60-80% At that point, "new" vehicles aren't needed (or viable) RECYCLED (refurbished) vehicles become the way to a zero carbon transport system.
Dangerous game. What looks like a desert is teaming with life. After giant sucker machine drives over it actual desert. So they will obviously do it. Progress 🙄
A totally irrelevent comment re yours about the doors - when you were little, your parents told you off for slamming doors. When you had your kids, you told them off for slamming doors - - now you get a car, and when you get in or out, what do you do? - Slam the doors! - - - - The nodules on the sea floor are mostly manganese -there is a fiction book about mining them, the title escapes me, but it explains how they got there. - - - Talking of meeting the people, how about coming over to the other (West) side of the Pennines, next year? - - - - If the Far Eastern cars are going to have a big impact - they need better brakes! 🙂
Hopefully the future is fast, exciting and affordable. Calling JBS the Former CTO of Tesla gives a lot more credit due than the debatable, "temporally inaccurate" moniker of "Founder".. Well - all the jetsam in former tips are technically reclaimable, but there is no way humanity is going to totally stop burning and digging stuff up... any decade soon - we still have to prove the theoretical circular Energy economy is valid in reality (materials can be circular. solong as pyrolysis and repolymerisation is on the table - Energy is more challenging) .. While ever China, India and Indonesia (etc...BRICC +ZA/SA/etc) are still increasing their "footprint of burning stuff" - and all the other energy stream options - Geo thermal, hydro gravity, mass gravity, pebblebed nuclear - with deep geological disposal) the trajectory tells the lie.
Cars are dumb assets because they remain parked 95% of the time. We could provide socialized transportation (which is more energy efficient) at a tiny fraction of the current privatized cost. And V2G is dumb because it puts the onus of societal energy storage on individual consumers which 1) is a waste of lithium, 2) is a cost more efficiently owned in bulk by one entity - the state, and 3) lithium shouldnt be used for grid scale energy storage at all. What we need is huge state over investment in solar and wind which will drive energy prices close to zero (and sometimes even negative) which both kneecaps fossil fuels and drives the economic incentive (ie energy arbitrage) for cheap grid scale batteries like compressed air or thermal sand batteries. Efficiency is moot when prices are low. (Which is why nobody cares about the inefficiency of ICE vehicles)
Sorry, that's hogwash about nothing else being like cars sitting most of the time unused. That applies to a huge proportion of the things we own. And that's actually the whole point of owning your own car and letting it sit. The point is that it's ALWAYS right there waiting for you to jump in and go with no notice whatsoever. No apps, no phone calls, no relying on anyone or anything else. It's about the certainty of being able to go when and where you want. How about your winter coat? Do you wear that every day? Or does it hang in your closet untouched for at least 6 months out of the year, and only in use for part of the time even on the most bitter cold days? Maybe you should get rid of that coat and "just hire one when you actually need it"?!?!?! Yeah, I didn't think so... That's just the tip of the iceberg. There are dozens of other, just as compelling, reasons to own your own personal vehicle(s) outright.
The reason we don't have any British owned Car manufacturers anymore, was attitude like that & complete disinterest from the Thatcher government in UK Manufacturing, for decades. And people saying, 'Why not manufacture all our goods in China', and buy Iphones made entirely in China, we don't need to manufacture anything anymore. Well that's worked out well for us hasn't it. We are looking at the Total demise of UK Mass Car manufacturing. And the UK turning into, Singapore on Thames. You don't see, the streets of German towns & cities filled with foreign cars, they are mostly German. Try going to Wolfsburg, sometime...
22:48 but how do you know your audience is mostly male skewed? How do you know my sex, for example? As far as I can tell, that info isn't anywhere publicly available. Given how women can face increased harassment online once it's known they're women, I would bet there are a lot of women who prefer to keep that hidden. So I suspect there are more women watching than you think!
Unfortunately, the success of the EV will never be a reality if batteries are supposed to be the defacto method of producing electricity to propel EVs. In short, batteries suck and they will always suck. They are too heavy, to expensive, too long to charge, with limited energy density. The bigger the battery, the heavier the vehicle. In other words, a self eating watermelon. Batteries in time, may improve and be viable but the technology continues to suffer from the nuclear fusion promise, always thirty years away. The only hope for mass adoption of the EV is to find a more efficient way of producing electricity. Folks like Llewellyn and many of his guests, unfortunately have bought into the creepy Musk battery sell job. If we do not succeed with hydrogen or some other means of producing electricity more efficiently, the EV will forever be relegated to a niche market. Unfortunately, the mouthpieces trying to sell the EV are limited in their knowledge of the subject with a terrible lack of foresight. They then become easy prey to the snake oil salesmen. While I continue to hope for the success of the EV, we are currently caught in the grip of unscrupulous pied pipers dictating the dialogue.
Why do you waste your time trying to push this utter nonsense, 'Donald'..!? You MUST know it's complete bollocks....!!? ...it may be the case that, in an idealised, fantasy fairyland world which doesn't exist(well..maybe in your deluded head.....!!?)...we'd have a much better system for propelling motor vehicles along the road! But we HAVEN'T.....what we DO have is batteries! ... and so, batteries will be used to make cars go - for the FORESEEABLE future!! So you'd better get used to it, dude.....
@@donaldespeut2042 One, I can and do make fuel for my EV on MY ROOF! Two, both gravimetric and volumetric energy density of batteries have already improved to the point that they are being used in AIRCRAFT! Three, prices on batteries have dropped drastically with advances in both technology and production processes. Four, hydrogen requires massive infrastructure to manufacture, transport, and store. Five, stating nonsense such as "the EV will forever be relegated to a niche market" borders on trollism, which is where I believe your intent lies. So, I do know more words, all of which demonstrate that never, and I mean never, have I read a post as replete with error as yours.
@@timower5850 Mister, you are one of those people who live in fantasy land. Batteries are so far from being an adequate electricity provider for the EV is pitiful. I am a great advocate for the EV but I am also realistic. For example, the current level of the battery technology puts the EV out of reach for the majority of the public both from a cost standpoint and all of it's other deficiencies. Your point about them being used in aircraft is ludicrous. For electric powered aircraft to become viable needs electricity generation far beyond what is currently capable form batteries. The developers for electric powered aircraft are desperately hoping for better technology. What I am afraid is happening is the amount of money being invested in battery technology at the expense of other potential alternative. Unless there is a profound breakthrough in battery technology that at a minimum, will achieve halve the weight, half the cost, and at least twice the energy density, we are kidding ourselves. Your point about Hydrogen can be resolved with adequate investment and badly needed for electric aircraft. Your regurgitation of the whole issue is evidence of your limited knowledge of the issues involved. Stop being 'Musked' and open your mind to other needed possibilities.

We are both of an age that would recall when those stereotypes had more cultural strength
In any event, I'm a little shocked that my Ice Warrior avatar didn't automatically suggest my femininity 😛
Great podcast. Sure I actually walked past in this video. However mining the ocean floor for cookies concerns me. And need to be addressed carefully
what is the piece of audio equipment on the table?
I keep thinking "if I provide services to the grid, I'm using up some of the lifetime of my battery." But then I recall that some batteries can outlive the cars they're in, and batteries can often degrade from calendar aging before they degrade from use. Sooo, there is actually an opportunity for grid (and microgrid--personal/behind-the-meter) services to more efficiently use this material and energy!
Now, how do we measure this battery usage, to confirm our accounting? It's clear BMSes (in cars and otherwise) need a total-energy-delivered "kwhr odometer." (They should also have a total-energy-received meter and it should only ever read, as a system health indicator, marginally greater than the delivery kwhr-odometer, but I don't want to belabor this.)
TLDR we need to be sure our cars have kwhr-odometers generally but especially when involved in v2g.
Go on, say the "E" word. (Without him, we wouldn't be at this point, UK, or China)
for information, you can swap iPhone batteries for new ones.
Can you go and see the Arc Vector one day please?
12:23 I have yet to see anyone take up the challenge but it *IS* possible to recycle Diesel fuel, even if it was recycled to start with (& yes, recycled materials are used as Diesel fuel). Oil refineries are that sophisticated & have been for decades, possibly a century or more. The problem is that even on full throttle what goes through the combustion chambers is less than 7% fuel & when the throttle is closed it's pure air, it's _uneconomic_ to recycle not impossible.
"Two gentlemen in our age shouldn't be talking about 'the end of life' " 😂
Tony Seba said in 2030 he expects car sales will drop by 75% due to robotaxi
Said "that" in 2030
(Unless he's travelled *back* from 2030! Might explain his uncanny predictions?)
He actually said "the global car fleet will reduce by 75%" (I think it was actually 80%)
.
At that point there will be no "car sales" to individuals.
Bring back scrapheap challenge build a wind turbine 😁
Well its all good and well this V to G. But as long as CCS is not accepted as defined standard and just based on protocols and no infrastructure is readily available and supported by energy companies it will remain 10 years away. V to H is a lot closure. It is a great idea… just not enough government / regulatory push behind it. … still hope it comes though.
We would need a whole lot less copper if we did away with grids altogether...
Let Roger know it's not
JB "Strooble" 🤔
I'm having my dinner lol continue Mmm dog baba
If we have to destroy the planet to drive cars then i say give up cars
How do you get there?
EV
Autonomy
Reduce the global fleet by 60-80%
At that point, "new" vehicles aren't needed (or viable)
RECYCLED (refurbished) vehicles become the way to a zero carbon transport system.
Cookie is an American thing says the guy dressed like that 😂
Mind you he does look a bit like a Queenslander.
Your discussion sounds like an Advertisement for Apple lol!

Yeah ..... blindingly obvious really.....I use my mattock about 4 times a year - but I wouldn't be without it..!!!

A world record podcast for name dropping. Tedious and pointless reading of names. Otherwise, brilliant.
Catchphrase missing Disappointing
Only ignorant people keep using the word "basically"
Never, and I mean never, have I read a post as replete with error as yours.
@@timower5850 Is that all the words you know? Kindly explain yourself.
