Unanticipated benefit: I got an electric car 2 years ago and appreciate the cleaner air in and around the car. On the occasions when I travel in an ICE car I'm painfully aware of the smell of exhaust.

A couple of weeks ago my ID3 went to the VW dealer for an inspection. The next day my colleague took me to work and back in his quite young Ford Focus Fusion diesel. I was car sick. In my entire life I have never been car sick. His car was relatively quiet and smooth for what it was, but to me it was cold, noisy, it vibrated, and the manual drivetrain was jerky and uneven - and he's a smooth driver. Honestly, it shocked me because I was looking forward to chatting with him. Later, he took me back to my dealer. I couldn't wait to get back in my BEV.

Fantastic conversation. I was struck by Robert Safrata saying he noticed how clean the air was when he went skiing for the first time. I was reminded of all the other things we have to hunt out because of the effect we have on the planet, crystal clear waterways, truly dark skies where we can see the breathtaking beauty of the Milky Way and just places where you can't see anything man made. We should all be able to enjoy these things, perhaps we will if we continue as we are now.

I think everyone should get to experience living amongst nature, even if it's just for one month. I lived in a wooden lodge, in 60 acres of meadow and woodland, overlooking Lyme Bay on the South Devon coast. It was priceless to just be able to open the front door and go for a walk amongst the heather, trees and long grass, watching the butterflies, bats, owls, buzzards, deer, foxes, slow-worms, wood peckers. The seasons came and went, no two days the same. Total bliss

1:14 I love the two Zappis at work. I really do. So simple to use. So reliable. I plug my ID3 in and go inside to work. Sometimes 80 or 90%. Occasionally 100% [naughty]. I come out at break time and it's already over. So I sit in the car and turn on the heat and seats and within seconds I'm toasty. And I can see the Zappi already putting in the tiniest bit more again to compensate. So, during 28-30th last week I popped into work because this year was my time in. Only the barrier that the Zappis are behind hadn't been lifted [WHAT???]. The guy whose job it is had the week off, dammit. And nobody else had been arranged [typical]. So I was left to struggle with ONLY 150 MILES in the battery until Jan 3rd. [ONLY, he complains - I'm not, I'm totally joking]. But I did miss my Zappis. If you have a driveway, get one. They're brilliant. It's a good idea to have an electric car to go with one. Or it isn't much use. 😊

An unanticipated benefit is that I can argue that if he misses his bus we will have to use more dirty fossil fuel to drop him off at school (although that would have also been true had he missed a diesel bus).

Not just that, but "affordable" in the used market too
I've wanted solar panels since a kid tbh. I also barely drive so a 2011 Toyota Yaris suits me perfectly, because crucially the insurance is cheap on that car and it's quite cheap to buy
I used to have a Toyota Prius and I deliberately downgraded because I figured that I don't use it all that often, so I may as well get something cheaper, albeit less efficient, but the insurance difference means it's worth it
I do however figure that as I've bought my house, I've already been looking into ways to make it much more eco, essentially using PassivHaus principles without going fully PassivHaus
People may say to me "Well, how can you say you think that you're doing good for the environment if you've still got an ICE" and I'd respond with this
"First of all anything that humans do industrially means there is a negative impact to the environment. Electric cars do a lot less harm, but it's not even a neutral impact. It's still negative
Secondly, given I barely use my car, a better direction of my available funds, is something where I spend most of my time given I wfh for 3/5 days
In that sense, I'm removing the biggest use of carbon from my lifestyle, which is tbh, my house
I've also got an electric bike, so having a non EV car doesn't truly matter. I also live not too far from a major city, and the trains here are absolutely fantastic despite technically being "Cheshire" which is known for being rural.
I keep watching these shows, because they do give you some ideas. I'm just hoping that the council will approve my plan to put solar panels on top of my attic (flat roof)
If they do, then I'd have 8 solar panels facing south, as well as my current 8 that face east.

I grew up close to the Lakeview coal generation plant in Toronto area and we had smog alerts all the time, some windy days you'd see dust blowing off the pile of coal and that pile was huge, the size of a couple football fields and 10 stories tall I'm guessing, The days the ships showed up to restock coal with their conveyor belt pouring on the top of the pile was insane.....pretty bad right. His comments on Alberta are reasonable but incomplete.
There is resistance to renewables and EVs in the UCP (provincial) government, and in the rural areas dependent on fossil fuels (convoy origins, F’ Trudeau crowd), but there is strong EV adoption in the cities, many wind farms in the south, a huge boom in solar farm installation, and geothermal plants in development thanks to smart industry. Even some pipeline companies are building renewables. The province is even in a coalition for SMR reactors.

British Columbia has lots of hydro power. They can also sell it to Washington, where it is ultimately sold to California for a lot more money than the get for power in Washington! Thanks for providing us carbon free power! Exporting power means bringing in income from selling that power!
Each MW of power generated from natural gas or coal takes about $38 in fuel and maintenance. So the 14,000 MW of solar power generated in California is making 532,000 MW of power daily, X $38 = $20,216,000 in daily fuel cost not needed! Or X 365 days $7,378,849 a year in fuel they do not need to purchase! So more fuel for everyone else, and this will lower the cost of fuel for everyone!
However California still uses 8,000 + MW of power each hour overnight and when the sun goes down. 1,000 - 3,000 MW can be made with wind power right now. Still that 8,000 MW per hour X 12 hours per night, that is 96,000 MW X $38 = $3,648,000 spent each night on fuel! So $1,331,520,000 on fuel each night for a year! What California needs today is more wind power! Lots of it, like 18,000 MW of rated power to be installed over the next 10 years! At that point, California should have enough wind power to sell excess power 24 hours per day!

36:40 RL made the comment you can charge at home while you sleep. Fine for those with off-street parking that don't live in terraced houses or blocks of flats. For EV to make sense in the UK you need a roll out of chargingvstations on a greater scale than fuel filling stations ever were.
Another point - where are all the metals required to go net carbon neutral from 2030 going to come from. An at least 4 fold increase will be needed according to the International Energy Agency and could be even more. It can take up to 12 years to bring a new mine on stream from first pegging the claims and then there is all the environmental impact,I know, I have been in hard rock metalliferous Mining for the past 40 years.
I have no doubt the climate is changing and CO2 is a contributing greenhouse gas, but in my opinion renewables are not the panacea they are made out to be. Nuclear Small Modular Reactors will be ideal, but again development has been stymied by the NIMBY crowd and the anti nuclear lobby.
The worst part is if you dissent in any way from the UN IPCC and Govt "climate religion" you are castigated.

Some pundits estimate that for a linear decrease in the price of EVs, you increase the market exponentially. Besides, many of the alternatives are superior i may ways for static applications. They last longer, can be cycled between 0 and 100% with no damage, are safer, are made of cheap, readily available materials and all they lack to be cheaper than Li batteries is market share.

In Victoria, Australia, electric vehicles are taxed at three times the rate of petrol vehicles. A litre of petrol is equal to 9.1kwH. Electric vehicles use around (18.2 kwH) per 100 km (or better). The same car running on petrol and using 18.2 kwH equivalent in petrol would pay 85.4 cents per hundred km. Instead, of paying 85.4 cents per hundred km, the electric car is taxed at $2.50 per hundred km, almost three times the rate of the petrol car.

No one knows the true carbon footprint of an EV, so an independent study has not been done that I know of , happy to read one if there is one, please send a link.
You would need to calculate what the carbon footprint of all the mining is for each component the aluminium, , cobalt, lithium, etc etc , the mining of these elements and the shipping of these elements, then you will need to calculate the carbon footprint of the manufacturing of the battery and the shipping of the battery, and of course the carbon footprint of the car itself and the shipping of the car to its destination, you will then need to calculate the carbon footprint of the recycling of the battery and the car itself.
EV owners have very little interest in Climate change if they are happily driving cars made in China and Shipped to the UK : )
The shipping of one car from China takes 5000 litres of bunker diesel, equivalent to 83,000 miles driven in a VW golf diesel.

When 'conservatives' complain about costs of forging ahead with sustainable development including such aspects as energy and transportation, it never occurs to them that they're spending MORE money on healthcare & social welfare benefits as well as LOSING productivity/GDP & tax revenues to pay for all of the above. Once those initial investments have taken place, those societies will GAIN financially and socially because they're no longer forced to finance unnecessary expenditure on the aforementioned; a basic lack of joined up thinking in other words.

Exactly. This video content is fake news. Canada is a massive producer of fossil fuel. This idiot does not count the emissions at the power station chimney which is more than from the car exhaust. Very few countries have river for hydro. Norway is supplying most of northern Europe with oil and gas. Without Norwegian fossil fuel Northern Europe would be in the dark and at a standstill.

I love all of this EV evangelistic twaddle. It's becoming more like another Brexit debate everyday. The reality for me is that after waiting 15 months for my EV to be built it's now actually going to be more expensive to run than the petrol car that it supposed to replace! There will be a very nice Audi Q4 up for sale in March this year. The UK government need to get a grip on our energy infrastructure and pricing now (not in 2040).

I suspect that there is a strong correlation between people that are pro-Brexit and those that are anti-EV. Basically they are people that can't hold more than one thought in their mind at one time.
Despite the rise in electricity prices, EVs are still far cheaper to run than comparable ICE cars, particularly if charging at home or work, less so if wholly reliant on public charging. The anti-EV brigade tend to compare the cost of running the most economical diesel cars with the public charging cost of an EV, failing to take into account that EVs are far more pleasant to drive, have far better long-term reliability and far lower servicing and maintenance costs. Although public charging hassles, redress the balance a little.
