  • In this episode, Robert talks about some current news stories floating around the internet. He discusses the UK’s charging infrastructure on target for 2030, Lithium exports from Australia, new Toyota EVs and there’s a particularly amazing rant about an article claiming that heavy electric cars are going to make old weather worn multi-story car parks collapse. Hmmm, Robert doesn’t quite agree, largely because on the whole, they are significantly lighter!

Abour women's interest in electric cars - I'm 86, I've never driven a car, nor am I likely to, but I'm a huge fan of FULLY CHARGED - for me a most exciting voice of the coming world of EV. Keep up the good work Robert - every enjoyable minute of it. Elizabeth in Ireland

One of the 7% of your female regular viewers. I love to geek out about all the clean energy tech and love the rants about poor reporting and green washing. I have used information from your show many times in conversations with skeptics. Just want to say in my house which I share with my engineer husband, I am the one pushing us to electrify and convert to clean energy. My husband knows about you and your show because he hears me watching it.

Why are there so few of us? I’m no engineer and I’m over 65 but I too love this. Have installed maximum insulation, solar, air source heat pump, heat pump water heater, leased on EV (Bolt) and bought a Tesla model Y when GM called in our lease but had no EV to sell us and REFUSED to sell us our own leased Bolt. Not sold on the Y but had literally no other EV available to buy. Never going back to an ICE vehicle. Have charged the Tesla in 15+ minutes on trip up north while shopping-got a notice yo hurry up and unplug. Lol, never able to do that in the Bolt. Have only ever charged anywhere except home a handful of times in the past 3.5 years. Tesla too spaceship for my taste and dislike I Musk intensely but I am done with fossil fuel.

In my case it's the other way around. My wife listens to this while I'm watching the videos, and I'm the one pushing the electrification. I still need to do a little convincing, but she loves her electric car, and from the first moment she wanted to trade her gas-driven car.

Not sure that you are accurate about BEVs being lighter than ICE powered cars, as EV versions of ICE cars weigh more than the petrol or diesel powered cars. This is mainly because the batteries are heavy if they provide enough range to cope with customer's demand for a decent range between charges.
It takes just minutes to fuel up an ICE car, but up to an hour for a similar distance in a BEV car.
Public fast chargers can be very expensive to use...some charge 98p per kWh...that's about 4 miles of travel or 24.5p per mile...not good..!

Can't wait for our very own FullyChargedLive this fall. It will be a chance to make the point that Canadians are following the lead of the rest of the world in moving to renewable energy, limiting the use of fossil fuels and converting to EV's. We too really need a small electric "City Car" sooner than later. My VW e-Golf isn't getting any younger and they aren't making them anymore and won't import the VW ID.3 for us. Rant on Robert!!

I did 950 miles last week going to fully charged north in a car with a range of 100 miles, every charger worked except the one that was ICEd by 5 cars... My bladder and range is in perfect harmony 😀

    • @therealjetlag
      @therealjetlag Год назад +1

This! How many people need to drive longer than their bladder can stand? I keep hearing about this mythical required range of 1000 miles before someone will consider an EV. Really? How many people drive 1000 miles without stopping?

    • @stevezodiac491
      @stevezodiac491 Год назад

@@therealjetlagto charge a 60 kwhr electric car takes over an hour when empty on a typical 50 kw rapid charger, a piss takes sbout 10 minutes. How is your bladder retention relevant ? I drove 300 miles home from Fort William the other week. I stopped twice for ten minute pee stops towing a caravan. When I arrived home I had 1/4 tank left. If I had an EV6, I would have to have a much smaller caravan than my 7.5 metre 4 birth fixed bed and I could only cover about 120 miles max with that, meaning that I would need to stop overnight somewhere. Electric cars are a logistical nightmare on long journeys as you well know. I have had an electric car as well for 7 years 2 months and through bitter experience, I would not countenance long range driving in it. It is a nightmare.
It has now lost 1/3 rd if it's original battery capacity and range after 34k miles meaning that when it prematurely, compared to an ice car, does not have enough viable range, it will be scrapped as it is not economically viable to change the battery. How is that environmentally friendly.

I plug my car into a regular 220/240 v 10 amp socket in my garage, charges overnight nice and slow, I get about 80 miles in 10 hours - I don't even need a high power socket installed. It's been 3 years and it amazes me that most people still think you need a special socket to charge a car, you don't unless you drive more than say 60 - 70 miles a day. On road trips you use public chargers

    • @bluetoad2668

Re the parking lot story. Electrify did a similar piece. They found the original source was a guy saying "are parking lots capable of withstanding modern cars when they were originally build for lightweight Ford cortinas" . Also found some guy who was part of British parking association had stated there were car parks banning evs. Electrify researched this and the parking association confirmed no car parks had ever banned evs or had this concern raised.

Yes ,as an ageing Aussie bloke I enjoyed the rants . Here inOz we have been told that our power bills will rise by 20-30% this year and it’s mainly to upgrade the grid. We were told the same thing about ten years ago but then they called it gold plating the grid. We have the highest rate of rooftop solar panels in the world but the energy industry sells less but wants more for it. Delays in approval and connection are part of the game.🦘🕊

Drax B - Robert thank you for highlighting the madness of this project. What is obscene about this is the cost of the subsidy is added to electric bills paid by industry and consumers. I.e. anyone who uses electricity from the grid (almost everyone in Britain) is subsidising this project. But if you want to raise your blood pressure even higher look in to who else burns biomass fuel and gets large rebate cheques. These are not terrace houses - but mansions and large buildings such as hotels, a few golf clubs. It would make a good subject for an investigative journalist to get the list of claimants who receive the Government rebates for burning biomass. Note there are a few projects where the biomass might come from waste wood which would otherwise end up as landfill or being simply burnt to get rid of it.

Fantastic rant Robert, met you yesterday at the end of the last day of Fully Charged Live Show in Harrogate UK.Told you about my 2014 Nissan Leaf Tekna that I resurrected from a write off 29k on the clock, now done 133.5k with 10 out of 12 battery bars still left and for the past 3 years I've charged it up to 100% with my Nissan Granny Charger about 5 to 6 times a week. I have loved owning it over the past 6 years even though compared to more modern EV's its range is limited, it still caters for my everyday needs, 50 mile return journey to work in Cumbria and back and still had 38% left in the can, so to speak.
Range is no longe an issue these days, what is everybody waiting for!
Drove my dream car at your Show yesterday - Tesla Model 3 performance, I couldn't believe it, I showed the team a picture of my Licence and they let me out on the road ON MY OWN!!!!!!!!!! for 30 minutes.
Of course I had to put my foot down, not very much I might add, and had the same reaction you did with the Model S Ludicrous acceleration test "What the F%$@%k"!!!!!!!! It completely blew me away, thought my Leaf was quick off the mark, but that was blisteringly fast. Anyway :-
I Know you are a very modest guy and I'm sure you have heard it all before, Loved you as Kryten in Red Dwarf and Love your role in changing the world to sustainable clean energy.
looking forward to perhaps seeing you in Amsterdam later this year.
been caring for my mum and dad since I moved in with them 14 years ago, mum was the last one to go last year at the fantastic age of 95.
My daughter Mia 22 (has ADHD and Autism whom loves driving in the countryside) and me at the slightly scary age of 63, have booked our first Holliday in 10 years in Tuscany Italy September this year. We are going to drive there and back in an EV to heighten the adventure - However I don't think doing it in the Leaf is a good Idea for obvious reasons. Want to do it in a Tesla Model Y long range.
Do you know, is there anywhere that could rent me one at a reasonable price for 15 days as I'm doing It all on a shoestring budget with enough left not to have to scrimp on the Holliday while we're there.
Anyway as always, if you have been, thank you for reading.

At 40 minutes into your video, you mention something that should be your lead article! That is the people in charge saying "I don't want solar and wind power connected to the grid" and yet they are the ones in charge of connecting power to the grid and selling grid power. This is a HUGE problem in Minnesota in America, where the people in charge are saying "We need to study your connection to the grid for a year, to make sure nothing will be overloaded". So they might allow one connection to the grid. And if you apply for 3 projects in the same county, they will say "We will have to study each project separately, and once one is connected, we can start to study the next proposed project in that part of the grid". Like we can not combine two studies, or get it all done at once? It is just a process that they put in place to slow the connections to the grid to such a snails pace, taking 5 - 8 years, making the. company that was installing home solar systems go bankrupt because they would not get paid for the $20,000 system they install until it was grid connected (and that should be done in 15 - 30 days, but was delayed over 600 days). I agree it should be criminal to subject people to such long delays.
If I was in charge, I would bring the president of the power Utility in Minnesota to court, and demand they connect some solar systems at a certain rate over the next 6 months. And to provide a report of the number of systems connected each month. Then hold the President of the Utility in contempt of court for not meeting the connection rate of solar systems to the grid. And to make that person prove that connecting more systems is actually causing a problem in other states, such as California, or other places. I guess after spending a few days in jail, the President of the Utility will either quit, or start to allow solar installations to take place. And with no evidence of the grid crashing when a solar system is connected, they will keep connecting the systems to the grid.
When the President of the Utility will not get filled, have the Judge serve a search warrant for the Utility, and go to the Personal Department, and have them open the books. Find his salary, and then place him under arrest for being the highest paid person at the Utility and the one who is in charge, and the person to be held in contempt for not connecting solar systems to the grid. Funny how quickly you will find out who is now in charge, and the highest paid employee, and that person is the one in contempt of court? Then jail all of the people making over $125,000 a year, and then let them discuss who will be the "Fall Guy" who will stay in jail, and who will be the not fall guy and go home to his family. And who will be the one who is actually going to make sure there are 50 - 100 new solar connections to the grid each week, until the backlog is done! And anyone wanting to connect a system to the grid will be told "Yes, We can do that, might even have the approval today!" Have a policy of in by 9 and have your approval by 4 the same day!
It is funny that a Utility company can allow the connection of a brand new 800 KW 480 volt 1,000 amp connection to the grid almost anyplace, if you want to "Buy" power. However to connect a 5 KW solar system where you plan to sell a small amount of that power to the grid, suddenly the grid might have something terrible happen if that was allowed.
In reality, my friend has a 5 KW system on his tract home in San Diego CA. Lets say the tract has 500 homes, with refrigerators and some air conditioners, and other average loads. Say the average load to his track of homes is 1 KW per home in the daytime, His 5 KW solar system will reduce the load of his tract of homes by 5 KW, from 500 KW to only 495 KW. Lets say it is a hot day, and the load to each home is now 2 KW average, as they run air conditioners. Then the load to the tract of homes is 1,000 KW or 995 with his solar system working. The power company can not justify that the solar system is going to crash the grid!
California now has about 14,000 MW of solar power installed in the state! The base load is about 24,000 MW of power during the daytime, so many times they have more renewable energy than they actually need, on a windy day. So they can sell that excess power to nearby states. Sometimes the nearby states also has to much power and does not want to buy the excess power, even if the price is really low.
At night, California usually is importing about 8,000 MW per hour from nearby states. If they had more wind power in California, then they could become a state that does not need to import as much power at night. That would be a great thing. However there are roadblocks in the way, because the people selling power want it that way!

Renewable is a deceptive word. You pointed out well and did so quite well. The word we looking for is emission-free. We need to stop burning things plus we need to sequester existing CO2 in the atmosphere by growing trees! Not cutting them down. NO wood chips, firewood, etc. We need to Stop Burning Things! It's awfully simple isn't it? And it's cheaper!!!

I'm still a very young guy, and I've only been driving for a few months. I currently cannot afford an electric car of my own, so I'm rattling about in a 2008 mini hatch. I try and drive it as economically as possible of course though. The thing is, my dad drives a BMW i3, which I've had to move around a few times, just to get it out of the way of something. Even just moving the car out of the driveway is such a radically different experience to a little petrol car, and it's so much nicer.

If I talk casually to people who aren't in the EV bubble it does seem that the things people were saying five years ago are still being said (low range, batteries won't last long etc) - more education required. Mindset is also an issue, a friend said she has been caught out a few times. I encouraged her to keep her car at 80% charged rather than charging when she is getting low which is what she would have done with a petrol car. Having said that I went back to petrol a few years back because I missed having a convertible (ten year old SLK so low purchase price - limited budget) and financially that has worked well because my old Zoe ZE40 has collapsed in value since then.

Just to clarify the comment on Tesla selling 'shit loads' of cars. The Tesla model Y was the best selling car (including EV and ICE) in Europe Q1 2023. Quite amazing for an EV only company that doesn't advertise. In addition the BEV market share in Q1 2023 in Europe was 13.4 % , now comfortably over the crucial 10% level - this means we'll see huge disruption over the next 2-3 years with ICE companies under enormous pressure - the ICE vehicle market collapse is about to become the big story with so much money tied up in manufacturing infrastructure and in the cars themselves (second hand values?)

Bit late to this one but always happy to hear Robert articulating a lot of my views far better than I can. Recently a friend bought a petrol car and said the salesman told him electric cars are 'not sustainable'. I wanted to point out that perhaps the salesman had a slight vested interest as his company was tooled up to manufacture petrol cars and that if he sold you one they would continue to profit from the frequent maintenance etc., I decided in the end that he probably didn't want me telling him the vehicle he'd just spent over £50k on was soon going to be obsolete so I bit my tongue.

I've been saying for decades now...that we need small cars with super fast recharge times and recharging while sitting at stop lights.
This is already possible today using LTO cells, what is missing is the fast recharge infrastructure.
I agree the 4x energy density is a game changer, which is what Lithium batteries were to lead acid, and I am so disappointed that we have not got there yet after a decade now after lithium, we have had very minor progress.
I remember when JB Strabul built his EV 944 porsche and a pusher trailer when we were on the EVList, before Tesla, I heard about his recycling startup, did not know he left Tesla.

Maybe ask the UK Power Networks who run and maintain the National power cables. Wheen built, most homes are a 30amp or 60amp fuse . To use more electric you may need to upgrade either to 80amp or a 100amp or more fuse, esperlly if using a powershower and home charging a car.
