  • Robert is joined this week by The Fully Charged Show’s CEO Dan Caesar to discuss what they both agree was “the best presentation ever given by Tesla!”.
Unveiled at a recent investor day at the Giga-factory in Austin, Texas, and subsequently shared globally, Tesla’s Masterplan pt 3 outlined, amongst other key themes, their far reaching plans for a ‘fully sustainable Earth’.
Both concluding that it was 4 hours well spent, Dan and Robert pick through some of the highlights of the presentation and what that means for the global energy transition.

But the depth of Teslas know how can’t be matched by the old car manufacturers. Old OEMs use SO MUCH parts from suppliers. They really couldn’t show interesting things for 4 hours.
But I agree, it was a great presentation that showed what Tesla really is. A technology company.

I watched Tesla's Investor Day in manageable chunks after the fact. Quite apart from all of the information the Tesla team imparted, I was quite shocked to discover how little the analysts present seemed to be excited, or even that interested, in what was being presented.
Okay, it was a very long presentation on top of what had already been an extensive tour of Giga Austin, but you'd have thought that the nitty gritty details of how Tesla viewed the sustainability transition, how they planned to get there, and what its impacts would be, both from a company viewpoint and a worldwide perspective, would be of considerable interest.
As Robert said, all they really seemed interested in was what the next big shiny thing would be - like a flock of magpies; go figure.

For it's size, the Model Y is incredible value and after watching Tesla's investor day, I'm not all that confident some of these other makers will be around to honour warranty issues or supply spare parts in the next 5 years. Too bad Rivian, Ford and VW couldn't make an effort and I suppose of it wasn't for the Tesla owners club Tesla would have been absent too. The transition away from fossil fuels is the biggest economic disruption in world history. I understand fully charged has only limited funds but maybe a friendly state or federal government or even a council could subsidise Fully Charged next year to make the show massive. Great interview/chat. As someone who did watch the whole 4.5 hour Tesla presentation (while doing a bit of simple wood working and cleaning up the shop; it would be a bit of a stretch to sit through the whole event without any break) I think you did a good job of highlighting the key moments and "take-aways'. BTW, the $30/month unlimited charging for some Texas Tesla owners is for overnight charging, when the grid has (often, I assume) more wind power generation than demand for energy. Like you, I found the presentation to be very interesting and insightful and hopeful - as the explanations of the real viability of renewable energy are. I'm in Canada, BTW, where we are slow to ditch fossil fuels and we are also subject to tremendous fossil fuel industry lobbying about our "Clean oil"...whatever figment of marketers' imagination that is.

I agree that was possibly the best presentation I have seen from Tesla, the developments they are making in efficiency will mean they can produce more cars cheaper in less space, the cars are also likely to be more reliable. I think now the main hurdle for EVs is their initial cost price and Tesla is going to solve it, they can do production at scale.
You didn't talk about the dry battery electrode process that is now starting to significantly scale up and which is a massive saving in factory space and reduction in water use.
I am super interested to hear more about their lithium refining. I think they will feature that in future, I think what Elon was hinting at was that they can develop battery grade lithium from lithium deposits that weren't considered of a high enough grade before. I am keen to see what develops in that space.
I too, at this stage, am not as excited about FSD & Optimus Prime as this has proven to be a harder problem than Tesla thought, they have admitted that a lot of their lines of development plateaued, Elon promised FSD to be working years back, I know they are often late and while they do keep improving we can not be sure that they will succeed. What happens when a human is driving is a very complex thing and while AI can do surprising things, but it does not replicate human thinking, AI can never rely on common sense. I'm not saying it won't happen but I also don't think that it is a given that it will happen. For Optimus to work they need to solve FSD, whereas to get the next generation Tesla factory in Mexico working they have already pretty much solved all the problems in principle, so i think there is a clear path for that to happen.

You mentioned the person in charge of the EV charging infrastructure but then ignored what she said? Tesla cars will be integrated into the Super Charger network as you travel!?! So you set you destination, then your car sends that information on to the Super charger network which then allocates slots to you at various charger sites along your journey while at the same time being aware of and doing the same for other Teslas currently charging at those sites or on their way there. This means no queues for charging and no range anxiety if you drive a Tesla on long journeys.

      What nonsense "you lot" type.
You're assuming that every charger in the chain will be 100% functional at the time you need to use it.
And, if you were held up by traffic then who's to say this "slot" won't be taken by another driver, equally concerned about charging his vehicle?
And there's sufficient "electricity in the wires".
      And it's not too cold.
There is no future in battery powered cars and never was.
That battery tech is/was but a mere step on the way.
I have to presume you're still at school and understand very little about cleaning up the planet's atmosphere.
There's an environmental catastrophe looming as in when the ice melts and the coastlines change out of all recognition ... and you and poor old Robert are still droning on about "cars".
The notion of electric "any form of transport" is excellent but the power supply via battery isn't and never could be.
Given the percentage of EVs across the planet "we" are just about coping with the recharging thing as it stands. What do you suppose will happen when all the vehicle stock on the developed part of the planet becomes electric?
This magnificent new battery factory allegedly to be built in UK is not building batteries for ordinary vehicular use at all.
The batteries to be produced are destined for storing energy from renewables. It is alleged that some research will be for high performance batteries for high end vehicles. Why?
Would there be sufficient capacity to charge cars and service the domestic load given fossil fuel appliances are being phased out by design?
Never forget that together we can drive batteries off the roads.

Re. Unlimited charging for $30 per month, then you could drive the equivalent of once around the world for $70 dollars.
Vis If a Long Range Tesla Model 3 with an EPA-estimated range of 358 miles per charge were to travel around the world, it would take approximately 70 charges (24,901 miles / 358 miles per charge = 69.5 charges).
If you can charge your Tesla Long Range Model 3 every day for a total cost of $30 per month (which is equivalent to $1 per day), then the cost to travel around the world once would be approximately $70. This estimate is based on the assumption that it would take approximately 70 charges to go around the world once, and each charge costs $1. However, please note that the actual cost may vary depending on the cost of electricity in your area and how much you drive the car.

It's sad to hear that lobbyists are managing to get governments to slow the transition down. As an EV owner for nearly six years now, I have seen things improve and then decline again. The issue is not with the cars but with the uptake of them going faster than the infrastructure required to support them. It is another example of Tesla showing how it should be done and the rest of the industry ignoring them. I had a conversation with a hotel owner recently when I enquired why they didn't have car chargers. Their response was that they couldn't afford it. I explained that it would be another revenue stream and they looked baffled. Misinformation had won here too, for the moment!

Anyway point is maybe a bit of a publicity drive here to get more than those of us who are already converts interested and informed by your programme. Is a TV advert beyond the realm of possibility, maybe for the fc live shows? Perhaps you have one in the pipeline or perhaps the cost is prohibitive but on those occasions when I have shared episodes among my six Facebook friends I always get at least one response! I see the govt are "investing in green tech" or some such , tick...then they say "specifically carbon capture" and my heart sank and thought that we need more people in this country to realise the weakness of that kind of investment and to ask for the right kind and more British viewers of your channel would encourage that. Or maybe it's a case of you feel, as you've just said at the end, that viewing figures are doing well by word of mouth and the huge expense is not a viable use of funds.
    Really great presentation, thanks👍

Just needs some tweaks to night time camera warnings, false information and perhaps the wiper s/w at night not being sensitive enough. Other than that it drives well. Needs air suspension though or a good set of Koni shocks to smooth out the UK potholed roads. Compared to the EV competition it is streets ahead.

One question raised in my mind by the big Investor Day presentation has not been addressed by any commentators as far as I know.
Tesla pointed out a major advantage of the car's computer during assembly is that every electric or electronic part can be tested as it is installed so, if faulty, it can be replaced/repaired/tightened immediately before other parts are in the way. This is possible because the wiring loom extends throughout the car. This procedure means that the construction history of the car is contained within it and stays with it during and after manufacture.
In future, the car will be assembled in segments that are combined in the final steps of vehicle assembly. This allows many steps to proceed simultaneously, thereby increasing speed, but adds some complications. Each segment will need separate wiring with power and computer diagnostics. Maybe the power and diagnostics are part of the station where the segment is being built. These segments are: front casting and drivetrain plus instrument panel, rear casting and drivetrain, battery and seats, left side panel, right side panel, doors etc. These pre-painted, pre-built segments must then be fastened together to make the car (but NOT by welding now). Apparently lots of bolts and gaskets or caulking will be needed to fasten the segments together. The wiring loom sections will need to be plugged in to each other and the testing histories combined and retained by the main computer for testing of the total car.
This new procedure should make for faster assembly and more cars produced. But these many extra steps and complications are not present in the current methodology. Will the move from welding to fasteners cause problems? Will the test history be in the ‘Tesla cloud’ or in the segments or in the car’s main computer somehow? I’ll be interested to see how Tesla’s engineers solve each of the issues raised by this new procedure. I expect they will or already have.

This presumption that Tesla will move from Welds and glue is just a best guess. There are other design options to consider such as clever interlocking and the Glue and Weld technology isn’t going to be sidelined in many places where it currently exists either. I’m sure the Crew are fully aware of the challenges and are currently conquering them one at a time. That’s the kind of people Tesla employs …

Found Elon a bit arrogant toward bidirectional charging. Floating a point that if you pull the plug out from the car the house goes down. We’re not dumb, we see after that, it was mentioned in 2 years it will be available. But should be available now to provide power during natural disasters or emergencies. Elon seemed to be totally against the idea.

    • @rogerstarkey5390
      @rogerstarkey5390 Год назад +1

His point was absolutely "On the money"
Can you predict when a power cut will occur?
(Whether it's due to "natural disaster" or "emergencies" (specify)
      or
      grid deficiency?)
      .
      That'll be an emphatic "NO".
      .
Once that conclusion is established, the next rather simple conclusion *should* be
"So, I can't guarantee that "the car" (AKA "battery") will be at the premises when the "emergency" occurs?......"
      .
Then, the "smart person" (maybe a ten year old?) might ask
"So what's the point of "a backup battery" that doesn't provide guaranteed backup?"
      .
The phrase "Chocolate Teapot" springs to mind.
      .
      Plus,
Let's make an assumption that the owner of an EV
      (AKA "not effective backup battery")
Might be smart enough to have at least some solar installed?
But they use the "not a backup battery" for work, either "on the job, or commuting.
That means (obviously?) That the NeBB (car) isn't Available to top up when the vast majority of solar is received?
So, the solar powers the home, but there's excess.
The "system" offers the excess to the grid (if it's working)
The grid has (let's say it's 2025?) 5 million homes doing the same.
It doesn't need the energy since coincidentally there are 5 million homes NOT using grid energy.....
But they take the energy anyway!
      How?
They offer a very low "we'll take it if we must" price, and they channel it to THEIR battery storage!
      .
When the "NeBB" owner drives the NeBB home, the sun is low, there's little solar input.
      They plug in.
The grid starts selling them back *their own energy* at the "you really need this!" price.
      Win for the grid!
      .
      This is where you say
"AH! BUT.... The NeBB Powers the house (if it has enough remaining) and only asks for Grid energy overnight.... Off Peak!"
      .
OK, so "Peak" (18:00 to 23:00?) Is no longer "Peak", because you removed the home from the grid?
      .
BUT between 23:00 to 06:00 there are a lot of homes (and NeBBs) needing energy!
      .
The utility decides there is no "off peak", just a flat rate over 24 hrs.
No gain for the NeBB owner.
      .
The utility may even find they just don't have enough Battery during the day to store the "5 million home excess".
In that case, they require "other generation" sources specifically fired up overnight. That's going to be "Peak cost energy"
      .
Of course, there could be a power cut at any time day or night, so you may be left with a NeBB which has powered the home to 11pm, then has no input overnight.
      Choices?
Deplete the NeBB, then maybe don't work the next day?
Or, don't power the home, leave enough in the NeBB to get to a Supercharger, and charge at some point during the day..... (Late for work?)
      Dilemma.
      .
      Alternatively
      With a static battery?
      All bases covered.

Your take on the importance of the changes to assembly are spot on. But it goes one step further. Not only is it less steps it allows for more room, which allows for more robotic assembly & less complex robots.
The next generation platform could have a order of magnitude less human labor per car. This is what Elon wanted when he imagined the “alien dreadnaught” factory that lead to production hell. The robotics were too complex to build the vehicle at scale. Their solution was to design a platform from the ground up to have fully automated production. The next generation platform will fundamentally change how all volume automakers produce vehicles. Those that don’t change will be absorbed or supplanted by those that do.
