Hi Robert: another great episode, and one that highlights the same arguments that I have every other day and with a host of different people. It really is staggering that residents of an enlightened town like London can still be so wedded to their cars that they are not prepared to entertain doing things differently. Everyone is a “special case”, and everyone justifies (in their own mind at least), why they must have and more importantly CONSTANTLY use a car……..Yes there are situations and cases where this might be true, but does that mean my neighbours MUST drive to work or drop their kids off at school, even when we are talking about a distance of less than half a mile in both these cases? The congestion in London is now epic, or perhaps more accurately disastrous, depending on your point of view. No-one goes a anywhere fast anymore, and these lumps of steel, glass, and plastic that we use so much to project our egos with, now litter every free bit of space in the greater London Area, making our quality of life quite miserable in some cases. That’s before we even get started on the pollution angle, and yet the opposition to the expended ULEZ charge has become so vocal in various discussion groups I view, that I wonder if in truth it really IS me that has it wrong. NO, the plain truth is that this situation is at the saturated self limiting stage. This can’t go on because it has become counter productive….and that is now, when a huge number of people work from home. Goodness only knows what the road network would have been like if we returned to pre-covid levels of commuting by personal transport. As you said in the episode, it’s no longer about what car you drive, but whether the era of personal transport truly has peaked, and whether governments are far sighted enough to again start planning and building cities around PEOPLE, and not cars. Of course the whole energy debate is far wider than just the damn car, (and yes I do drive when I absolutely need to), but perhaps I have pontificated enough for now…….
Big city dwellers do not need personal transport. However everyone else is not so "lucky". Electric cars last A LOT longer than engine cars and costs are falling rapidly. There is no reason why everyone (except big city dwellers) should not have their own transport. The issue is road space - cities don't have any.
There are 1.24 cars per household in the UK. How many cars are there per household in London? There are 0.78 cars per household in London.
I moved to London from the South West countryside where public transport is patchy to say the least; had always needed a car and when I got there realised I could sell it as the transport system in London is amazing and so much faster than a car to get around! I moved back to the countryside recently and had to get a car but only use it for essential trips now (my nan has dementia and I would not be able to visit her for example if I had to rely on public transport around here) but walk and cycle still where I can. I dream of the rest of the country catching up with London's public transport infrastructure; it is a 30 minute drive to the nearest train station and there are no buses to be able to get there, so you have to drive, and then if I wanted to take a train north I have to go to London first then head up! Which seems ridiculous and that is not even touching on the ridiculous cost of trains and bus travel for rural locations, only the well off can afford to use them............

Its weird to think as the largest producer of iron ore, aluminium ore, lithium ore, second largest in copper and 6th in gold, along with one of the most skilled workforces on earth, Australia is one of very few nations that has plentiful supplies of everything needed to produce entirely indigenous electric vehicles, but we dont. We dont even incentivise them.

@@Peoplestariff Not really, Australia had a car industry and it collapsed because it couldn't compete with cheaper imports. The problem is that even some grunt doing really basic assembly on a production line is earning stupid wages each week courtesy of the unions. What the unions failed to realise with their constant push for higher wages was that all of their members would soon be out of work...

Super. This is what is needed.
Talking of compact heat pumps, I have just fitted a Shoebox heat pump from Kensa in Cornwall. It is also designed to fit in a kitchen cupboard and is a ground sourced unit. Kensa suggest that a good application is in blocks of flats/apartments with a single large borehole supply for all the units dug while the ground workers are doing the foundations and the individual customers taking care of the electricity supply. Ingenious. Ground-source efficiency without the fuss.

I love the passion Robert. Could you do some stories on companies which have implemented a true circular economy. I believe BMW can now recycle their cars, and Rip Curl are recycling their wetsuits. The companies are the ones who profit from this consumption of their products. Should they not be the ones who need to manage the pollution that is created by them.
All very good but what are the recycled materials made into and what is the cost in CO2 emissions and the money to do it?

IRONICALLY RARE DOES NOT MEAN RARE
"Rare earth minerals" are badly named (not blaming you Bobby) as they are not rare and can be found nearly everywhere. They would have been better named "sparse earth minerals" as they exist in many, many places around the globe but as a very small percentage within each ton of rock or dirt we dig up.
China has a near monopoly mainly from investing in the mining, refining and mining rights for rare/sparse earth minerals.

I suppose I should point out both that the oil industry presumably still uses Cobalt from the same sources available to the battery industry and that there was apparently (?) little or no restriction BEFORE the battery/ EV manufacturers signed a new code to halt the practice (2018)?

I reckon sodium ion batteries will be used in a lot of small cars, especially as their reliability and production scales up. Anywhere that has a lithium iron phosphate is a candidate to use one of these. Presumably costs will be a lot cheaper too in time because the chemistry is cheaper.
Have been considering getting a few for my bicycle. Never made the jump to Li-ion (still using NiMH). So may get some weight savings.

Thank You, Robert. Again it was an eye opening show. I used to love cars (still do) and I thought that the electric car would save us from troubles, but since the last decade, now I know that just what you have said is true , sometime the best car is no car at all.
I think the sodium ion batteries will generally be used for home storage, fact. But I actually think that there are a lot of transport use cases where they will be popular. Especially very short route commercial, bin lorry's, community service buses etc where speed and very long range are not important. Costs, reliability, and long life are.
If they reach same energy density as LFP batteries then they would be extremely vital in mass adoption of Ev's as the price of EV's will be same as petrol vehicles.
@@manjeetkolte8601 agreed. I have seen some reports of reaching density parity in development but that's 18 months ish off shipping. Going to be ubiquitous I think
Sodium ion batteries will be good enough for 99% of cars. They are way more robust than lithium ion batteries, so you can get rid of most of the thermal management, which will free up some space and weight.
They'll never quite reach the range of lithium ion, but let's be real who needs 1000km range? 500 is way more than enough.
At that point it's about cost and there sodium batteries will be king.

I do enjoy these breaking news items thanks. The first graphic was for metals only and doesn't include coal. So is it true to say that iron ore is 94% of what we dig up or is it 94% of the metals we dig up. How big a box is coal compared to iron ore? It's exciting to think that at some point, the coal box will disappear!
Iron metal does not exist without coking coal. However, the world does not need a total removal of all carbon dioxide emissions. Regardless of the global warming theocracy, we should stop burning coal for any other reason. It kills millions every years. We should also stop burning the best materials resource the world has ever known - oil. When we look at safety and emissions one power source stands above everything by at least a factor of 10. Nuclear power is The CLEANEST AND SAFEST energy source we have ever had AND there is a solution for the irradiated "waste". We have the technology to turn that into energy.
We must assume that at the moment,coal would be considerably more than iron ore as coal is used to turn that iron ore into steel. That is the metallurgical or coking coal. Much more coal is lower carbon content and is classed as steaming coal and is used for electricity generation. That is where the majority of the CO2 in our atmosphere has been added over two centuries. 🤔

Thanks Robert. Batteries: Its like being in the early days of the combustion engine when trying to find a garage that might stock petroleum spirit was a bit epic. Things changed fairly quickly - particularly after Henry Ford's model T. The infrastructure to support these vehicles followed suit. One can applaud Tesla for putting in their own infrastructure to get their cars charged - which in turn boosted sales and so on. Smart thinking. Its inevitable that the irritations of EV ownership are going to be addressed - simply because those who come up with better solutions are going to be leading the sales.
Petroleum is a by product of getting jet fuel and diesel out of crude oil. As petroleum demand goes down it will become a problematic waste with negative value. It won’t go away

@@theairstig9164 You can always burn petroleum to make electricity, with which you can fuel electric cars. And before you say anything: Yes that is a step in the right direction, as stationary power plants and electric cars are much more efficient than small motors in combustion cars.
Also with time we have to switch jets and all diesel machines to e-fuels anyway (where batteries aren't feasable).

Considering the last sentence it likely pulled that number out of its ass. It never admits when it doesn't know something but tries the next best source.
Like when it said Mars had a few billion citizens.
Is that weight the battery cells or the battery pack - big difference. You also need to factor in removal of engine, clutch, fancy gearbox, fuel system, exhaust system, emissions control - an endless list of c**p used in engine powered cars that EVs don't have.
Seems about right for battery energy density on a pack level. Robert mixed up pack density with cell density in his comparison. Tesla has not reached 200Wh/kg yet on a pack level.
reference the 'Murican Chevy Bolt 64 kWh pack (NMC) is 960 lbs. so as rule of thumb, all NMC chemistry in existence averages 13-15 lbs/per kWh (ref: use 14 lbs as a multiplier) and fortunately this figure INCLUDES the weight of the steel or aluminum structure because not unlike classic Lead Acid chemistry, battery material with that level of density unfortunately can't just "hang out" in free space nor attach itself to a vehicle designed to drive down the road and pass crash tests, using something innocuous like "Velcro" or "Zip-Ties". because: REALITY, because: PHYSICS.

I know this is hard to do, but i would love to see more regular episodes of ABN (again). Iirc, like 4-5 years ago, this was actually true then. Most of us here love a good bobby rant and his take on recent developments.
As for sodium batteries, there is too little known about them at this point. They seem real, unlike solid state batteries (looking at you toyota), but they are kept under wraps it seems. I have not see anyone show off some raw cells and play with them. For instance, what does the charge/discharge curve look like? How many C can they currently charge/discharge? Can it sit at 100% or 0%? What temperature range is possible?
Yeah so far you are right with sodium batteries, but soon BYDs sodium battery car will be on the market and so you'll see a tear down soon enough, I suspect.
If you can trust the manufacturers they are way more robust than lithium ion batteries. So charging with much higher currents at much higher temperatures with a lot more cycles.
Only thing worse is the energy density, but I suspect they'll be good enough for most cars. Maybe not for a Porsche Taycan, but for everything else.

Or that for the last year we have complete data 2021? Evs as a whole only consumed just 24% of all the materials mined for world wide that then go into those so called heavy dangerous polluting ev batteries. 🙂

When I watched idocracy so long ago now? I believed it was barely disguised political satire. Not that I was viewing a quite prescient historical documentary of future America. 👍🏻

Even though I've worked since 1981 for (mostly) companies that provided services to oil and gas companies, I do not want to drive to work. I will take public transit if at all possible. It's irritating though, when the one-way commute takes only 20 to 25 minutes in a car, but takes 85 to 90 minutes on public transit. Yes, I can read or listen to podcasts, but 3hrs spent on commuting is a lot, when driving wastes 70% less time. And I can still listen to the same podcast while driving.

Excellent show, putting down all the negative reasons not to own an electric vehicle! On the side of energy issue, I watched a video yesterday on a man that has created a small individual owned nuclear power plant designed to power large factories! Expand that to small communities and they easily resolve the contrived energy issues!
Sadly, you mentioned a MG shown in the diagram behind you. I’ve always wanted to own a MG, but what I read that they were being produced in China as apposed to Britain, well it kind of let the wind out of my sail! I still like them, but it just seems so wrong to build them elsewhere!
Imagine being able to buy a stand-alone battery pack, the equivalent of an extra fuel tank. You could put it in the boot, or on the roof rack, or better still, in the caravan or boat trailer thus solving the towing/range problem. Just plug it in the way a trailer or van plugs in to carry the signals for lights and brakes.
My Dad worked in a molybdenum mine. That part was painful. Say molybdenum, aluminum, linoleum three times fast. 😂

That sodium battery car, is that the one BYD just launched or a different one?
Also yeah the energy density isn't quite as good, but the battery is much more stable and not as susceptable to temperature or high currents, so you can charge it super fast and get rid of a lot of the battery cooling, which frees up space and weight.
No BYD one is not lauched yet .(hopefully in a few days)
That car was developed by Sihol a joint venture of JAC and VW. The battery was developed by HiNa, who have been deploying Sodium ion batteries as grid storage since 2017.

Slight nitpick, the Tesla Roadster battery figure is for the whole pack, the 4680 figure is for individual cells. Still, about a 50% improvement in energy density in 14 years.

Robert...interesting bit of automotive trivia is. That BMW made one of the first or the first production EV's. Early production U.S. EV's
from the 1890's on were mostly adopted by women. No surprise there as the Nissan Leaf's early adopters were mostly women.
I find it much easier to comprehend range when the conversion is 'miles per kilowatt,' not 'kilowatt hours per mile.'

Push batteries to 15 - 20 years? My terrible old Leaf was made in 2012 and while its terrible range to start with is about 60% its still going. The massive improvements since seem set to have them last for 500,000KM.
When life of a battery is being talked about what is meant is always the battery falling below 80% capacity. So your leaf's battery has been dead for a while, by that metric.
That being said, current NMC batteries will "live" more than 15 years on average (as in stay above 80%) already. LFP batteries will already last 45 years, theoretically.
The UK is part of Europe Robert, it's just not in the EU.

Ever since I was a little kid in the 80's and saw a solar car in the educational kids magazine Highlights I have wanted one. I believe that one was the GM Sunraycer, 1987. However I have it in my head that it was more of a wedge shape so I may be wrong a about that.

Great episode. I'm now particularly interested to hear about advances in battery technology in terms of energy density, weight and raw materials used. The idea of the new generation of batteries which will increase the range of cars and hopefully storage capacity of home batteries. Having already got solar, batteries and an EV I hope more people will get on board as the technology improves. As for cobalt mined by children, it needs to stop and we need to know how most is mined and where. Also let it be known that alternatives to cobalt are on their way.
