I think the biggest change we've seen in the last few years is that concept cars now serve the purpose of gauging customer excitement about a new design. Rivian is an excellent example. As was the Honda E. They showed off the cars, the public reacted positively and they said, glad you like it because guess what, you'll be able to buy this vehicle in a few years. In some cases companies may even feel pressure to build something that was never intended for production (as is certainly the case with the VW dune buggy).

If we took one of today’s four door saloons back to the NEC in the early 80s (when Isla St Claire was singing on a podium - I remember it well - I also remember those fluffy things with eyes, and those hats made from thin cardboard with a spiral cut in them - anyway, I digress) would we look at it in wonder as one of those out of this world concept cars?

Concept cars are a test bed to include all cutting edge elements. Each pushing boundaries in what could be done, not necessarily on what should be done.

I’ve traditionally seen concept cars fulfilling many different roles. The outlandish concept cars set the vision. The more traditional forms are for gauging customer interest and the near-production build cars are for testing - build, supply chains, real-world handling etc. As the lines between tech and engineering get even more blurred it’s fascinating to think what else they may be used for. Love the idea of beta testing and how concept cars can lead to new relationships between ideas-factories (yes, I just used that term!)

Can these preproduction cars be sold to any museum guaranteeing they will never see a public road? This is a serious enquiry

I was surprised they didn't bring in rapid prototyping as part of the concept car development cycle.

It's a shame the talk had to end there as I liked the idea that smaller car firms would run as more of a BETA type arrangement rather than the traditional here's our product and this is the eye watering amount it is going to cost you to buy.
The idea of a low production car as something you rent so that the real cost of the car could be recovered over a much longer time scale enabling the price to the customer to be reduced without running at a loss. The manufacturer gets cars on the road and real world feedback.
There's going to be the issue of longer payback on the product which will require patient money backers but it has to be better than just selling a product at a loss until sales increase that seems to be the financial methodology we see now.

I hear Hugo say "Beta test" in the context of his non-rhotic accent and hear "Beater test". As in, "we're going to have these customers beat on the cars for a while." 😂🤣😂😆

Perhaps its the skeptic in me but I've never been a fan of concept cars, because I'm not a fan of false expectations - and in my experience they are rarely a vision of "what we (designers) want to see" but rather "what we think could be interesting, if there were no limits" or sometimes even "what we think people think would look futuristic". What I feel car manufacturers are generally missing in concept cars is to show what's probably technically possible within 5-10 years - because the average Joe won't know that in as great detail as those experts, who know some of the technologies that are only missing the mass-manufacturing technology. If the reality of upcoming products are mediocre, then you shouldn't make concept cars more fake - you should aim to improve the real thing.
