Hi, can you please tell how do we calculate the length of the first layer? Thanks
Hey, the length of 1st layer is same for all. (it’s basically your hip circumference + fullness/gather length)
@@BrownGirlDIYs great, thanks for the reply, appreciate it 🙂
Thank you for asking this question!! I was really struggling to figure out this and I have to make a three dresses in a month! This helped a lot!
@@BrownGirlDIYs I'm still a bit confused as to how long to make the first layer. May I ask what your hip circumference is and how much fullness/gather length you added on to get to 160cm?
Just trying to figure out how much I need to adjust the first layer's length for my own measurements. Thanks!
@@amysoniahueppauff3485 Hey! My hip circumference is 82cm + 78cm fullness.
I realize this is a year old. I love sharing my thoughts. I did a underwear sewing course, way back. The tutor told us, before attaching a waistband, the piece that goes over the hip from waist, you curve it. So in this case I would have made the waistband fit without gathers.that way it is flat against the body.the reason for this is so the undergarment doesn't ride up! How cool is that? So simple, who knew?? Thankyou for the gathering theory, I've often wondered how that works. 😄
This is just what I need! I've been asked to make one today at my job. So here I am taking notes on an envelope I found in my purse so I can make a bomb Pettie coat for the job
Glad to be of help♥️
I’m making my first ballgown and I haven’t been able to find an easy and simple way to make a petticoat that was easily adjustable for the length before this video, thank you so much for this wonderful tutorial!!!

Hi, I finished this today. It was my third ever project of sewing. I guess it might have been difficult for an absolute beginner sewer, but I'm very proud of my work and happy with the result. Thank you for showing very clearly how to do it.

Thank you! Glad to hear that♥️
Thank you for the tutorial! It was exactly what I was looking for!
But as I don't have a sewing machine, I'll attempt to do it all by hand 🤣
This tutorial was so good thankyou . Just another brown girl trying to DIY I have a new 1960 machine I love it 😀 and love you 😍 ❤ an actual learning resource .
Edit: if you wanted to make it puffier would you add another ruffle layer on top . Then stich the double layer together before going on to the steps you show to attach ?
Very neatly done; thank you!
Brilloant! Just what I have been looking for❤ Thank you for sharing your knowledge❤❤

Do I have to do 4 layers? I’m making a petticoat for a mermaid dress so all my measurements will start at the knee instead of the waist/hip
love this video! it’s so easy to understand thank you so much
How much fabric did you use for this? Also, thank you for the video! It is so easy to understand!
So beautifully done, thank you.🙏
Thank you dear
Thank you for watching♥️
Hello, thank you for your vidéos. Which fabric and type of petticoat is the best to prevent the wind from shaping our legs please ?
Amazing video!
Thank you!
Love this video, the music is also very chill 💖 what type of fabric did you use for tie up part? Thank you!
Thank you♥️ I have used Rayon fabric for the tie-up part.
What is the total amount of can can needed for the frills?
De COLOMBIA THNAKS BEAUTIFOL ❤
😍 lovely 😍 ....
Thank you♥️
How do I prevent my machine from gathering my fabric
Is 2pcs of 36x60 inches tulle fabric is enough for this?
Such a great tutorial including the maths! Thank you so much!!
Thank you♥️
Can you make a slit with a three layer dress??
Hey! Great vídeo! I was wondering about making one of these to use over a hoopskirt... I think the dress doesn't look full enough with just the hoop skirt ... Do you think these mesurements would work? Or should I thin it out?
(Guess anyway im gonna make one to use with other dresses, so thanks for the great tutorial!)
Did you ever try this with a hoopskirt? Im trying to work out if this would work with mine!
@@spongebobSQ0126 I didn't unfortunetely... but I intend to try it in the future, I'll let you know! (If you try it first, please tell me!)
Sorry, so for the last layer I’ll need 12 meters of fabric? 🫣
Hi. Thank you very much for doing this. I just have quick question: Do you think I can use silk as layering fabric? I mean if it’s strong enough to hold the tulle? And how should I make it if I need this underskirt be more huge? Just do 2-3 and put it on my body or make 1 huger one? But then again the silk or rayon wouldn’t hold it, right? Can you please give me some advice? I would really appreciate it.❤
I would suggest using cancan as it is very stiff and also strong enough to hold the silk fabric. Make only one..no need to make 2-3 if you use cancan. If you want to use tulle then yes you will have to make 2-3 underskirts.
@@BrownGirlDIYs Thank you! Have a nice day!🥰
I bought a petticoat after trying one on with my dress from a boutique. I tried finding the exact petticoat but it's no longer made. Now I'm worried the one I bought may be too poofy making the hem short. Is there anyway to make it less poofy?
is there really such a thing as "too" poofy ;)
Hey can u tell me which thread to use for sewing net fabrics
Same All-Purpose sewing thread which we use for sewing other fabrics… I have used Polyester Sewing Thread.
Great tutorial ! How did you get the length of 1st layer 160cm?
Hey, the length of 1st layer is same for all. (it’s basically your hip circumference + fullness/gather length)
Where can I buy so much tulle for little money? I mean 1280cm are not little. Or can I just sew smaller pieces of tulle together? Wonderful video btw :)
Yes! Cut small pieces of tulle and join them together to get the required length.
Okay, thanks
Can you add 1 or maybe two fabric on the 4th layer to make it look more fluffy, and puff . I am planing to make it 2_3cm longer than my dress in order to make the petticoat show while I am moving so I need the puffy look. Is it possible or I will ruin it?.
Yes! You can do that. Adding layers of fabric on top of a layer will make it more puffy.
How I find how long should be lenght of the 1st layer?
Hey, the length of 1st layer is basically your hip circumference + fullness/gather length
what tule did you used? hard or the soft one?
Soft one
Can I just do 2 layers- the 4th attached directly to1st.
Can it be 1 size fit all?
That will look good for short skirts…won’t work for long skirts.
Thank you so much 💓
How much fabric did u need to make this as per your measurements? Thanks! Great tutorial btw✨
Hey! I used total 11.2m Tulle of width 54”
Hey can you please tell me how to measure the length for the tie up?
The tie up should be long enough to tie a knot.
Do you need a lining or can you just use the tulle??
No need to add lining if you are making it as an underskirt. If you are making it to use it as an outerwear then add lining.
@@BrownGirlDIYs awhhh perfect thank you I’m making this for a queen of hearts costume 😭 so will this make a skirt puffy?? And would It be better to do a circle skirt or a rectangle skirt over??
@@amy9849 Yes! It will make the skirt puffy. Both circle and rectangle skirt will look good. It’s hard to choose one🥲
Hi there! How much of tulle you used in this project? And what is the width of that tulle fabric? Pls let us know. Thanks for the wonderful vedio.
Hey! I used total 11.2m Tulle of width 54” for this project.
Lovely tutorial!! I have been searching for one for soo long.. Just one question... I have to use my own hip measurments for the first layer right..? Because according to that, the last layer would be around 18 metres of tulle for me.. Is that possible.. Or did I do something wrong..?😅 (my hips are 109 cm and I doubled it for the gather length)
Hey! Yes you have to use your own hip measurement. Buy Tulle of larger width. I got Tulle of 54” width. Cut small pieces and join them. It doesn’t have to be a continuous piece unless you are making an outer skirt. According to my calculation, you will require 15.3m of Tulle. If you want to use Tulle for 1st layer as well then you will require total 16.4m of Tulle.
@@BrownGirlDIYs thank you so much! May I ask, how did you calculate the 15.3/16.4? I got something different on my maths
@@chibiviovi6914 Suppose you have Tulle of 50” width. Your 1st layer length is 109*2= 218cm and width is 25cm. Cut 1.09m of Tulle and then cut the same in half width wise. So you will get two layers of 1.09m of 25” width. When joined together will give you 2.18m. Which is your 1st layer length. Similarly, calculate for other layers. 2nd layer will be 2.18m, 3rd 4.36m & 4th 8.72m. Total 16.35m.
@@BrownGirlDIYs thank you so so much for explaining!!🥰
Hello can i ask, Overall how many tulle fabric did you use?
Hey! I used total 11.2m Tulle of width 54”
How much fabric do you need?
Hey! I used around 11.2m Tulle of width 54”
How many metres you needed for the skirt!?
Hey! I used around 11.2m Tulle of width 54” for this project.
How much fabric

Do u have online classes?
No
YOU SHOULD! 😁
Can you please make a pattren?
Hey! It doesn’t require a pattern. You can make directly on the fabric

Can I do the math using inches instead of cm?
Yes!
@@BrownGirlDIYs Thank you!
I didn't understand how we came to the length of each layer 🫡 - I wanna put it over a hoop skirt and dunno what to measure
Hey! You will have to first measure the circumference of each hoop of your hoop skirt and then add fullness accordingly for each layer
