I have made dozens of these, and your video does show the most simple and inexpensive way to make this. We added lace trim, but all materials were donated, so... I also love your straightforward and humorous presentation, and showing the measurements / "pattern pieces" drawn out. The only difference with the ones we made was that we had to make ours to fit different sizes, with only the lengths differing. The way we did this was to make the waist a drawstring instead of a waist band. That way it also gathers itself, too. I have belonged to a group of volunteers who sew period costumes, among other things, for the county park district. Lots of fun, and we do the job! Good job with your videos!!
I love how you have ideas and suggestions for how to make things in an economical way. Women through history have been doing this for thousands of years. And I wanted to give my sympathy for the loss of so much in the fire. I hope the gofundme helps.
A wonderful tutorial. Concise and entertaining. A well made petticoat is a thing of beauty. Hello to the kittens 😊 Thanks so much for sharing! Take care!
you explained how to make this so well! Even my initial attempt made out of two different chopped up bedsheets turned out amazingly! I think I will allow myself to finally chop up the nice material I have planned for my actual petticoat now :D
Great and easy tutorial. I am a bigger girl and can't find affordable items in my size. Hope to go through your uploads to see if and how you made your dress form.
In the UK (and here in Australia) the equivalent cheap fabric is called calico, you can either get unbleached calico (which is usually a creamy colour though sometimes with a greyish tinge) or bleached calico (which has been bleached white). The other option commonly used for cheap fabric used to either test patterns before cutting your expensive fabric or for cheap underwear like this is old bed sheets. If you can find second hand sheets at a charity shop that's probably even cheaper than calico.
Thank you so much.❤️ We are okay, just trying taking things one step at a time and figure out where to go from here. Thank you so much for thinking of us. ❤️
Just curious where you found the "One eternity later" effect. I'm working on some videos to start my own channel and I really like that. I've seen similar ones in videos by other CosTubers.
Assalamu alaikum! I'm going to make my own bridal gown.. i think your video will help me a lot in sha Allah. Kindly tell me, which cloth you use for making this??
I used cotton muslin, which is really lightweight, but I think you could use other fabrics and it would turn out just as well. I'm glad my video will help you with your gown, I'm sure it will turn out beautiful!
Hello,I am learning to sew and wanted to make some pieces. I had a question about the gathering of the flounces. Once you pin the first panel (assuming you start on the very end right side) do you start gathering from the opposite side (left side) for the subsequent panels? And second, do you do the 2 straight line and then pull to gather or do you do a different way?
I don't usually bother doing two rows of gathering stitches. I know it's technically more "correct" to do two, but I find that one is sufficient as long as you take the time to distribute the gathered fabric evenly. And then yes, I start gathering from the right, and then switch to the left. :)
Wouldn’t it have been easier to run a running stitch on the waistband instead of trying to do it by panels it would’ve been a lot faster you can match it up from end to end with a running stitch gathering
According to google and this is what I thought, too, a flounce is generally a circular shape with no shirring and a ruffle is a straight piece gathered to fit.
“In sewing, a ruffle, frill, or furbelows is a strip of fabric, lace, or ribbon tightly gathered or pleated on one edge and applied… as a form of trimming. A flounce is a particular type of fabric manipulation that creates a similar look but has less bulk.” From Wikipedia. Great question, as a lifelong sewer, I have used these words interchangeably, but clearly there is a more precise definition.
Beginner too and I did a search, is it that flounce is like circle skirts and ruffle be like gathered skirt or pleated skirt that are gathered from a rectangle?
There’s nothing like being a seamstress working in huge amounts of fabric with several cats 🐈⬛!❤
It's a well know fact that cats are natural fabric paper weights 😂

I have watched SO many videos looking for a well explained tutorial, and yours is hands down the best! I will definitely be following this pattern! 😀
I'm impressed by your gathers, I always struggle with that.
Thank you! They weren't always so pretty, but making tons of petticoats has definitely helped me practice!
Love the kitty interruptions!

I don’t have a video for the dress form yet, but I will have one in the coming months! :)
Wonderful! You made that look easy and I know it’s not lol.
Thank you! I have definitely made a lot of petticoats, so I've had a ton of practice. XD
Thanks for all of the practical tips. 😁
My pleasure! :D
Leaving a comment for the YT algorithm. And hopefully it'll help for future videos. I love the 1850s.
Love it. I want to make one now. We don't have Joannes over here in the UK so it will be a more challenging fabric hunt I think
Oh goodness, that is true! I wish you luck in your fabric hunt!
Fabricland has white cotton at £3.60 a meter if that helps

@@caithemburrow5569 Thank you, that really does.
Need to make me one of these too
Great video!! Thank you!
Amazing detail in teaching this. I love it! Is it ok to serge the edges or will that cause any problems with thickness where edges are folding?
There shouldn’t be any problem serging them unless you use a thick fabric to begin with. With regular muslin you should be just fine.
Lovely work. I hope your back isn't aching too badly. (Saw the same wincing I get at the machine.) The petticoat came out beautiful.
Thank you! My back was definitely tired by the end, but I did get a spiffy petticoat out of it, so it was worth it. XD
You are brilliant! I am definitely doing this. :)
I just heard that your house has burnt down I am so sorry I hope you and your family are ok and I wish you the best in the future
Thank you so much.❤️ We are okay, just trying taking things one step at a time and figure out where to go from here. Thank you so much for thinking of us. ❤️
Great video. We historybounders need to stick together.

I just googled "one eternity later" and it came up. XD
I think it's from Spongebob Squarepants?

Does anyone know the difference between a flounce and a ruffle? I am a beginner sewist and have no idea.
