Dennis was a tragic figure. He had a lot of love and talent in him but he also suffered a lot from both physical abuse in his youth and addictions once he became a musician. He died completely alone, drunk and helpless. A talented and beautiful man, shame what happened him.
@jazzgal5631no one cares who the media or Rolling Stone magazine decides to deify. The Beach Boys were never the darlings of the rock press and all the better imo. Dennis Wilson was a rock star in every sense of the word.
Love this guy. Pacific Ocean Blue is a masterpiece. He was incapable of being uninteresting. It's when he blew out his voice, he truely found his voice. One of a kind creative force of nature.
It's pretty obvious he never recovered from the stuff with Manson. The guilt of not doing more to stop them escalated his drug use and eventually it got the better of him....awful waste of a great talent and man who had so much more to contribute to the world and was not in any way responsible for those obscene killings
Dennis was innovative as a songwriter, but never got the recognition he deserved during his lifetime. How sad that he later became an alcoholic and drug addict, to self--medicate against painful memories. He also had a self--destructive nature, resulting in his tragic drowning in Marina Del Rey on Dec. 28, 1983, at 39. Yet, he was the Beach Boy who put his heart and soul into everything he did. RIP, Dennis. 😭😢😿😿🎸🎹🎹🥁🥁💜🎼🎵
@Paul Forder; Thank you so much for your very respectful, yet sober and realistic thoughts regarding Beach Boy Dennis Wilson. I was deeply saddened at the news of Dennis' tragic drowning. I have always believed that he was indeed the Heart of "The Beach Boys" and it was his Heart which was true inspiration for the Boy's direction early on. Dennis' Love for his Mother and brothers was apparent through out his tragic and tortured life. Brian was Dennis' Idol through out his life, a life cut terribly short as he succumbed to his demons. In 1984, while living in Lake Tahoe, Nevada, I had the pleasure and privilege of expressing my feelings about Dennis to his younger brother Carl to which he gave me a very genuine and heartfelt "Thank You." That meeting will stay with me for the rest of my life. RIP to brothers Dennis and Carl Wilson. Both truly beautiful souls gone before their time.
Great video! Dennis was such a huge presence, like all the Wilsons. There's something beautiful about the tragic story of the Wilsons. We want to jump in and help, like they were our own brothers. Dennis' music was amazing. Pacific Ocean Blue is a powerful album. I can't believe he said it lacked substance. Probably just being defensively dismissive. There is so much soul and passion on that album. He had to have poured a lot of love into it, and really believed in it.
If you haven't seen Two-Lane Blacktop you've missed a treat. I watched it not long after it came out without even realising who the cast were. The stillness of the perfomances only becomes more profound when you learn about their lifestyles. We didn't just lose a great musician we lost a great actor as well.
Thank you for another great video. I learnt some things which I did not know before. For me, Brian was the brains, Carl was the soul, and Dennis was the Heart! It was a magical combination.
Out of all the Beach Boys it’s Dennis I resonate with the most. I am a middle child as well and I have always been cast as the misfit or black sheep in my household. I am basically a replica of Dennis in the sense of what we had to go through growing up. Heck, I even play drums and surf too. I understand Dennis and I guess that’s why it hurts me so much because I had many of those same demons. I just wish he was still alive. Or to at least be able to tell him how loved he actually is and that he’s not alone.
definitely didn't help him becoming famous and being able to get by without a lot of standard stuff that helps keep us all straight like a regular job everyday. when things come too easily when you are too young it is always a recipe for disaster. you make a mess and then can't climb out of it by the time you realize the fun you were having was a mess you don't want to stay in.
We all loved the bands of those times----but it appears, it was a very dangerous, and unhealthy life-style! Too many damn drugs...That is what destroys good talent, and... Life, in general.
Not really, Dennis picked up these 2 girls that were Manson s followers, and they introduced Manson to Dennis, Tex was already in the whole scene in LA.

The speeded up drumming at the end of Sloop John B - great.
Seems like Dennis was on the path to self-destruction his entire life.
Self-destructive behaviour is a typical characteristic result of child abuse.
