Dr. Landy was CLEARLY abusing his position and committing serious breaches of ethics. BUT.... without him Brian would've VERY LIKELY continued on the path of drug abuse till he died. Yes, Brian could've kicked his addictions on his own but that would've been a very slim possibility due to the many past and present unhealthy emotional problems (not all of them due to Brain I might add). THE TRUTH? Brian Wilson's life is FULL of people, who were double edged swords for him. Dennis Wilson was supportive and loving. But also, at times a bad influence. Mike Love was a collaborator and his other half, in terms of song creation. But, also jealous and hurtful. Murray instilled discipline and the love of music. But, also very harmful to him. And sadly, NOT JUST with words. As with all of them Brian, loved and still loves them. Each one of them helped and hurt Brian in equal measure. Brian Wilson's biggest problems stem from the people in his life who made him who he is and continues to be. Family and friends are the best and worst thing you can have. One of the challenges you have to face. David

Don’t give Landry any credibility! Brian Willson suffered permanent, lifelong damage because of him. Landry’s actions went far beyond negligence-they inflicted severe physical, emotional, and psychological harm that Brian will carry for the rest of his life. While Brian needed help, Landry’s methods were not only inappropriate but destructive, leaving Brian worse off than before. The damage Landry caused is undeniable and unforgivable, and his involvement should not be excused or overlooked.

He was so mentally ill and confused he dedicated the book to landy, yet when he watched the movie he said he was panick stricken watching the scenes of landy and felt like it was real all Over again and was scared shitless!!!
Very interesting. Makes the Wilson/Landy thing a lot more reasonable perspective than made by the usual PR - one of those things where it was complicated. Good stuff. Make more of it when you have the time.
I’m so sick of hearing people excuse Landry by claiming he ‘saved’ Brian. He didn’t save him-he broke him. Landry manipulated Brian emotionally, isolating him from real support and making him feel like everything wrong was his fault. He humiliated him, tearing down his self-worth in the name of ‘therapy.’ He deprived Brian of his autonomy, treating him like an object to be controlled rather than a person in need of care. And then there’s the physical abuse. Landry starved Brian-yes, starved him-as part of his so-called treatment. He stripped Brian of basic human necessities, leaving him weak, vulnerable, and in constant pain. This wasn’t just neglect; it was intentional cruelty, and it left Brian with lasting physical and emotional damage. The effects of Landry’s actions didn’t stop when Brian left his care. The damage he caused is permanent. Brian’s health is ruined, his body scarred by the abuse, and his mental health irreparably harmed by the trauma he endured. The worst part? Some people still call Landry a hero for this. Let’s not forget the truth: Landry’s actions were so appalling that he lost his license to practice as a psychologist. His methods weren’t therapeutic-they were abusive. He failed Brian in every conceivable way, leaving him worse off than when he started. Yet, despite all the evidence, people continue to defend him. The idea that Landry ‘saved’ Brian is an insult to everything Brian went through. Starvation, humiliation, emotional manipulation, and complete disregard for his well-being-that’s what Landry brought to the table. Brian deserved real help, not this calculated cruelty disguised as care. It’s time to stop giving Landry a free pass and start holding him accountable for the suffering he caused.
Great video as always, thanks for posting... wonder if a video about the Ramones might be worthwhile? Slightly different style of music and time period from your usual stuff, but their history makes just as compelling a story as any of your other work - a story of addiction, conflict, mental illness etc
