Mike Love is the Beach Boys version of an embarrassing old uncle
Thanks for watching
You're wrong- that's too easy...
He was an essential part of their sound, just as important as Wilson on a lyric level. Love-bashing is passe', move forward amicably
@@randalclarke5487 He was essential, but he was often an insufferable, arrogant douche. And he was not the genius that Brian Wilson was, something he seemed to never realize or accept.
Yes, the drunk, arrogant old uncle everyone hates to see coming.
@@randalclarke5487it's just a damn shame he couldn't sit and think for a moment, contemplate during his 'mediation' that he WAS and IS essential, and understand that is enough. He contributed lyrics, brilliant lead vocals in the early surf songs, and was absolutely essential to the harmonic structure with his incredible bass parts... Why couldn't that just be enough. If he'd just shut the fuck up he would be universally loved. Jealousy and money grubbing was his downfall, no doubt in my mind
I love Carl as much as I love Denny and Brian. He had a quiet, grounded, beautiful warmth, charisma, and aura. That voice was so perfect! Carl is the ONLY reason Kokomo is even listenable. His vocals are so pretty and smooth!
♥️
No one on Earth, ever, has loved and admired CARL DEAN WILSON,more than I. RIP, rock and roll angel.❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
That HOF speech is such a drag. Mike just trashing all those other artists sucks man.
That, and him swiping the microphone from Brian during his speech. What a jerk.
Also rip Carl. Man had a voice of an angel
When the late great David Crosby had a Twitter account, I asked him what he thought of Brian. "Wonderful musician and person."
That’s so very nice to hear.❤❤❤❤❤
Carl Wilson is one of the most underrated singers, guitar players, and songwriters in the history of rock and roll.
Thanks for watching
He certainly was. A kind, gentle person as well.
Carl Wilson inspired me to take up the guitar. 😎
People love saying that. How can that be? Worldwide hits, floods of cash, and plenty of praise. What more could a musician ask for?
@@Mandrake591 i think the word underrated is really accurated, i mean have you seen Carl ever being mentioned among the greatest singers, by bbs fans for sure but by the general audience i haven't.
No Wilson Brothers = NO BEACH BOYS.
Carl was a conscientious objector during the Vietnam War.
The brothers kept Mike around ...that was their mistake.
Thanks for watching
I love Beach Boys gossip
Me too. I am sooo.glad me and my cousins and sibs aren't under such scrutiny. Everyone makes a fool.out of himself at one point but Mikey did it on camera so we can make fun of it at any time.
Thanks for watching
Well there's plenty of it to be had.
Shout out to Blondie Chaplin! He's still rocking out! And so is Al Jardine! ❤❤
Carl was the voice of reason and sanity in an otherwise erratic and egocentric band
Not always... do some research, he wasn't always top notch, just saying there's a certain mythos surrounding Boys
@@randalclarke5487 Out of a 36 year career, Carl had just two years (1977 and 1978) where his performances ran from okay to iffy to a couple that were completely off the rails, due to personal and band problems, alcohol and drugs. In the other 34 years, his performances were top notch. Despite that, I believe @impalaman9707's statement is true. And I also believe he or she has done the research.
@@1401minstrel Thank you. Carl's humility, maturity, and work ethic were consistent for most of his years. He picked up the slack when others wouldn't. And Brian also said Carl had the best ear for music besides his own, and trusted his opinions completely
From the very 1st time I saw them, 8/64 in Denver at the old Downtown Auditorium Arena, Carl became my very favorite member of the group. From then, to 11/97, I saw The Beach Boys 25 times. And, in those times, it was Carl who I really came to see. Sadly, I missed his him during his solo years of late '80, to early '82. I really wish I had seen him when he was " solo" . In the summer of '76, when they came to Denver & the old Mile-High Stadium, I was lucky enough to get backstage for a few minutes, & meet Carl . He was incredibly gracious, we shook hands, & he asked me my favorite BB's song -------" DWB " -------& then he had to move on. it was less then 5 minutes, & unfortunately I forgot my camera, but it was a moment I'll never forget. ----------PS : i also saw DW with Karen Lamm----Wilson. She was a blonde babe, & every guy was staring at her. I could tell, DW loved the attention the 2 of them received. ------------------MJL< 76 y/o
Mike Love has always been the most unmitigated douche in all of modern music. I grew up with the Beach Boys and have always thought that of him.
I don’t even dislike him, anymore. I just feel embarrassed and sorry for him. It must be agony to look back at his behavior at the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony.
This channel is exactly what I need right now! If you made a video on Al Jardine I could die the next day happily 😂
My love for Brian and distaste for Mike doesn’t prevent me from acknowledging Love’s contributions vocally and on occasion lyrically as well.
PS: Side notes😂
I love how you slipped in all the jabs at mike, he really is a piece of work.
Its all in jest. I have nothing ole mike
@@filmretrospective5334 that’s fair but the ways he has continually attacked Brian who with out a doubt has mental issues is really disappointing disgusting (not cursing would have used different words if not for abiding by the language mandate which is reasonable). Adding a sentence to a finished song from Brian should not give you 50% of the royalties. That’s why I think Mike is an awful person.
@@user-lj2my3vb3unot to mention all 1,000 marriages. Yep- a real religious zealot.🙄🙄🙄🙄🙄🙄🙄🙄🙄🙄🙄🙄🙄
Mike Love will never have my sympathy. The dude's an egomaniac. And it's probably a front due to the fact that he wasn't as talented as his cousins.
Mike and Carl were awesome. They got along very well.
Love them
Well Carl was. Not a fan of Mike love
Love was a complete Buffoon and still is!
Carl and Mike had rocky periods in their relationship, particularly in the 1970s.
@@1401minstrelLive from Knebworth - case in point.
Van Dyke Parks was homeless when he met Brian. Brian immediately got on the phone to Murry: "He's going to need a fully furnished apartment. And you need to put him on the payroll as of today, for $500 a week--" Then he looked at Van Dyke and asked, "Would that be enough?" ❤
Always good to hear your input bobbibaker
Brian also told Murry Van Dyke would need a car. What a guy!
Van Dyke said all he asked for was a new Volvo
Been a BB fan since 64. Didn't care for Mike then and still don't. It was all about the Wilsons and still is.
Don't forget Alan.
steve
Thanks for watching
Wilson brothers r the beach boys i love them
@@tereasacofield6109and Al Jardine❤
Mike is a good song writer and singer but is a pain in the neck now
Ricky and Blondie were from South Africa.
Thanks for watching
Carl had a voice from the gods (and I’m atheist)!
He did
I've seen a number of your videos and your work is so interesting 🤔. Thanks for all the effort you have put into these fantastic stores.
So nice of you
mike love and carl wilson legendary.
I love the sidenotes about Mike Love's five marriages. LOL!
Carl Wilson grew up from being a pudgy kid to a major musician and consummate professional. It's so sad that lung cancer got him so young.
Brilliant!!
Thank you.
Mike Loves numerous marriages speaks volumes about the type of person he is behind closed doors, quite different from on stage
Love the side notes: damning with (not so) faint shade😅😅😅😅😅
You forgot about Thump Wilson
Love thump
Fun fact: Mike Love's nephew is NBA star Kevin Love.
@Film Retrospective Fantastic video. I love how you deliver and explore the focus of your videos.
As a life long Beach Boy fan, the behind the scenes are sad to hear. I think anyone can understand the how and whys of the Wilson brothers and Mike Love's relationships.
But, the clear jealously of Mike Love towards Brian is embarrassing. Yes, Mike has a point when it comes to wanting more credit for the writing of the many legendary songs. What I and so many dislike, IS HOW, he's gone about it.
Mike Love is supposed to be into peace and harmony. Yet, his actions have prove otherwise.
Carl Wilson deserved so much better from both the Beach Boys and the music industry. As with Dennis, he could've and SHOULD'VE become big in his own right. But, OF COURSE, if that happened Mike Love would've found more reasons to be bitter.
David
Thanks you. Always good to hear
“Side note” 😂
Mike is an embarrassment
Thanks for watching
Indeed. Imagine trying to be in a band with him.
Whoa! Whoa! Whoa! Stop! Is that a cigarette the all-perfect mike love is smoking at 8:37??
I believe it is
Everyobe smoked back then.
Both good lads - Two of the nine heroes!
🙂
Hero’s 😜
like because of Mike's rant
guy's crazy
Mikes great
As great as Brian Wilson is, without Mike's lyrics, those songs would never be as revered as they are today.
A few songs
Side note: Good stuff. Crazy how disfunctional this band was
You’re doing the dark lord’s work ❤
Me too
Greatest HOF speach ever -
Jimi was spot on -
Carl had such a wonderful voice. too bad he was a smoker, lost an older brother because of the same reason
Lost my paternal grandmother the same way. What they don't mention is how PAINFUL lung cancer is! Knowing that Carl toured while dealing with lung cancer and chemo makes me respect him as a consummate professional even more than I already did. I was lucky to get to see The Beach Boys in 1995, and they still sounded great.
Mike Love's acceptance speech would have made him a good wrestling heel!
Mike Love - what can one say ?
Thanks for watching
Maybe you mean John Phillips
Yeah i realised that when i watched it back. Don't know why i said john Williams.
Who?
I can't dislike Mike. In his way he has as many issues as Brian.
Lol mike is a funny dude
What fame and money can do to people.
How did the rest of the band avoid Vietnam?
Bruce allegedly got out by putting on skinny jeans, makeup and pretending to be gay
@@daniel.holbrook That's dedication 'I'm not sure I could go that far.
@@barrycuda3769 Hmm, dressing in drag for half a day or potentially dying or at least life-long trauma. That sure is a tough pick…
@@nikokaapa I think I'd have a go at being totally blind 'with a white cane and dark glasses.
@@barrycuda3769 That takes some acting skills I think :D
Mike's perfect pitch and Carl producing for Ricky Martin ROFLMAO ok my dude we got something here lol
Thanks for watching
Mike had perfect pitch? I'd call it monotone. It worked when it worked within Brian Wilson's superb melodies but Mike's voice gets annoying quickly.
I'm guessing it's not the Ricky Martin you're thinking of. It was the son of Dean Martin.
Carl produced Ricci (pronounced Ritchie) Martin, son of Dean and brother of his future wife, Gina.
One of the greatest moments in rock was Mike Love flexing on and challenging all the "mop tops" during his HOF speech.
Such a beligerant and unprecedented terrible take from the king of terrible takes , Micheal Edward
There’s a reason he’s hated
Thanks for watching
Don’t care for their involvement with the Maharishi at all. The Beatles had a negative influence on The Beach Boys by pulling them into meditations. This ruined both groups. When the Beatles left, The Beach Boys should have also. Mike has been married five times and the Maharishi years must have destroyed his marriages. Do not like that Mike tried to sue his cousin, Brian. Family should have been able to settle matters together out of court. The lives The Beach Boys were living certainly took a major toll on the music they could have written and produced. If they had continued living regular lives, there is no telling where their genius and creativity would have taken them. Just wish things had turned out differently.
Thanks for watching
Rock n roll superstars do not live regular lives.
Big mouth love zero
Leroy is still my favorite.
Thanks for watching
Compared to the other hand members who had thick healthy growths of hair, Mike looked like a bald headed buzzard. 😢😮
Mike is both overrated ( in his mind) and underrated ( to the general public.)
Love mike
This is the correct answer. He is an absolute cad, but unfortunately that overshadows his legitimate contributions, vocally and even lyrically on occasion (his rewrite of Good Vibrations for example).
I’m Team Brian all the way, but some credit is due to that idiot Mike.
Mike Love, the Donald Trump of front men.
Thanks for watching
Bingo
Baldness must run in Mike's family, most likely hìs father's side. 😢😮
Even as a kid I never liked Mike love.
Thanks for watching
I hope people who have bought Beach Boys concert tickets since the end of the 50 year reunion tour knew it wasn't really the Beach Boys from that point forward. Or maybe better said, if they didn't know, they weren't true Beach Boys fans to begin with. To me the Beach Boys ended with Carl's death. On the other hand, Brian Wilson and his great band, and with Alan Jardine and Blondie Chaplin, exemplify the glory of The Beach Boys.
Brian is retired now.
@@ronfowlermusicYes. His wife is recently deceased. 🙏 LOVE and MERCY.❤
Mike Love is a good frontman. He is the only in the group who can do that. Opinions don’t matter.
Carl “frowed” up from too many milkshakes
I know, i cant believe he slightly mispronounced a word.
Thanks for watching
Eugene Landy was a real FROOT LOOP as far as I'm concerned. 😢 😮
Mike Love should have punched Elton John in the face.
thanks for watching
Jesus Christ is real love, goodness, hope and the universal king !!. And yes the Biblical Jesus Christ is very much real.
