He was a scumbag though, having orgies and hanging out with people that would become murderers. Open your mind and listen to something worthwhile for a change. It doesn't always have to be rock, rap, pop, etc. Try some classical music for a change and grow up.

Fact is, Charlie was an extremely talented songwriter and a decent singer / acoustic guitar player. I have that Manson album and outside of production which sucks, the songs are all really, really good. In fact I would argue most of Neal Young's Harvest album was very heavily influenced by Manson.

Years ago when i was working at a record store a used copy of LIE came in. Bought it immediately for the novelty of it. A few actual catchy songs, some awful songs and a few that are just kinda creepy.

I don't think that what is presented here takes into account all sources on the history. Stephen Desper (whos knife story was included here) has said he recorded a bunch of demos with Charlie with no Beach Boys present. Dennis certainly had a friendship and I think Mike went to one of orgies according to Mike but Charlie was definitely Dennis's thing,

I don't think the idea of "never trusting a hippie" is good advice because being a hippie had nothing to do with the murders. The people who committed those murders were clearly mentally ill people who happened to be hippies. The hippie culture didn't commit the crime...a handful of deeply disturbed people in a cult-like environment did. Big difference. That's like saying guns kill so don't trust them. It's never the gun, it's the disturbed people behind the gun that kill. There were Vietnam Veterans who returned from the war and became hippies because of their experiences and outrage of what they experienced over there, I knew a few, should we not trust them as well? Exactly. There's more to people beneath the surface. Hippie is just a title and you could interview 1,000 former hippies and get different perspectives as to what being a hippie means to each one of them. This was more of a cult thing given Manson's immense ability to influence people around him. In that way he shares the stage with Jim Jones and David Koresh. As for Jim Morrison the best advice he needed was not to trust himself because of his escalating drug and alcohol abuse which killed him at 27. The lesson learned here is quite simple. Never trust anyone who encourages you not to critically think. That's the better advice because it actually works.

The previous month was Woodstock, so the momentum from that event would require something more impactful, and sadly that's exactly what took place in 1970. That would be Kent State University. More & more historians will point to THAT particular incident as the one single event that impacted the culture the most. A lot of people wrote off the Manson family murders, though very disturbing, as something that would happen in Hollywood sooner or later given it's rich history of scandal, and suicide & murder. It's sadly kinda of a thing when you examine the entire history. To be fully holistic about what eroded the culture it's best to interview as many former hippies as you can and get different perspectives. I've heard it all from the assassinations of MLK & RFK being the beginning of it to the election Nixon, Manson, Kent State, Watergate, and the Vietnam War carrying on till 1975 as culprits. A few even blamed Evel Knievel for some reason. Kent State though, is the one topic that I found to be mentioned the most. In my opinion it's probably bookended with the two assassinations of '68 and Kent State in '70. The filler in-between is likely a bunch of things including Manson.

Just listened to the 1st 2 songs from Manson's album for the first time...they were like live recordings in a bedroom. But if they had proper production, they'd actually be really good. I can see the potential. Like Donovan mixed with Dylan. Damn, now I REALLY want to hear that master 8-track
I'm a recent Beach Boys convert, and what I've been surprised to find is how talented Dennis was as a musician, songwriter, and vocalist. Pacific Ocean Blue is a unique masterpiece and the material from Bambu is good and quite interesting as well. 'Forever' is such a beautiful song, a rock and roll prayer, as Brian put it. "Do You Wanna Dance is a very infectious song, an early example of Dennis' talents. That other famous drummer that played in the biggest band of the '60s isn't half as talented as Dennis and his solo output definitely proves that. It's a real shame that Dennis passed away so young, under 40. I'll be 39 on Valentine's Day myself. Joel

that cover photo is a riot. they've shown the house dennis lived in which manson and his following occupied for those few months in '68. gorgeous and picturesque. i think dennis was a lost soul trying to find something that would give him meaning. i also find it interesting mike love spotted manson for the fraud and pariah he was.

I’ve been design/building, restoring, repairing and collecting vacuum tube audio equipment since the time of the original Woodstock festival. Most is for home playback, some is for recording studios (primarily tube microphone preamps and electronics for analog tape machines). I see your amplifier uses push-pull EL34 output tubes but I can’t identify what brand it and your turntable are. What are they? Also, is that a moving coil phono cartridge step up transformer behind it? I build those as well. I also modify CD players to use tubes in the audio circuitry. I’m interested in knowing the manufacturer of your gear, it’s nice looking stuff. While I do listen to CD’s, I never stopped playing vinyl. Again, great video! The Manson story has so many odd connections and that is what makes it so fascinating. I think of the Beatles trip to India in early 1968. There was Mike Love, Mia Farrow and the Beatles. Soon the Beach Boys would cross paths with Manson. Mia just finished Rosemary's Baby directed by Roman Polanski whose wife Sharon Tate would be killed the next summer. The Beatles would begin writing the songs for the White Album which would heavily influence the Gospel of Charlie. Karma in spades.

I'd recommend chaos by Tom O'Neil, he gets a lot of the myths about Manson age debunks them. Particularly the idea that the murders were Beatles inspired.
just to chime in with my opinion. no. the tapes should not be released. there is enough glorification of serial and mass murderers. we don't need more.
Ponder this, imagine Manson joined the Beach Boys. Manson's true and most precious dreams would have been made reality, no one would have been killed, and we could have had a rejuvenated BB ready for the 70's. Having been a Beach Boys fan since the 1970s, I’ve read all about this stuff. I’ve read the biographies, watched the TV movies, read all the news articles. Dennis wasn’t particularly intelligent and tended to lack judgment about pretty much everything. He was easily manipulated because he was very trusting. Being stoned all the time didn’t improve any of this. I love his music but he really needed guidance and supervision…which he never got. If the Manson tapes still exist, I’ll bet they never see the light of day. I’d also bet they’d turn out to be less good than people remember them to be. I certainly have no desire to hear them.

Dennis was never going to write a book about his side of the connection with the Manson Family. It would only mean more talk about it, when the book was published. Saying that he going to write a book was his way of trying to move away from the subject. Whatever unreleased masters The Beach Boys have with Manson as writer, vocalist, with The Beach Boys and Monson's Family supporting him will only ever be available via a bootleg, or as some marginally legal out-of-copyright process. All old contracts for the publishing rights and performance credits would be hotly disputed, any new settlement of who wrote and played what even more disputed. Mike Love would be on the phone to his lawyers at the mere rumour of the masters escaping his control legitimately. But a high quality bootleg? Maybe. Why not cover the two Flame albums and their contents? That would an interesting set of of legal knots to explain and try to untie....

the beach boys started brother records in 1966. the beatles did not start apple until 1968. yes, the beach boys were labeled uncool in america in the late 60's, but they continued to be very well respected and having hit songs elsewhere such as the UK. i have read about TWO un-released manson full albums; one of which was recorded in western studios (where the beach boys had recorded) and used the studio musicians known as the wrecking crew for back up.
@@wcgcapone carole kaye has said that manson is why she quit doing pop/rock sessions. much is made of dennis's connection to manson, but supposedly brian introduced manson to carol kaye in a LA studio. one party was entering while the other was exiting. reportedly brian also took manson around and introduced him to many in the music business. jim morrison would drive hs car to the ranch in search for drugs. joel McCrea's son Jody from the beach party movies also partied at the ranch. actress angela lansbury wrote a note for her 15 year old daughter giving her/the daughter permission to travel with 'the family'. there were many more h-wood/music celebrities other than neil young and dennis with connections to manson.

Brian never liked Manson, he found him spooky. Also, Mike Love once got a creepy phone call from Manson and challenged him to come over right now then for a man to man fight.. he never heard again.
It would be a massive migraine headache to release this material. Who would or should profit from it? The Beach Boys would look bad profiting from it because of who they recorded it with. No one wants to see any surviving members of the Manson family making money off of this, because the murder victims memory and their families should not be humiliated. There would be a lot of potential legalities as well regarding who is entitled to what. And what streaming platforms will touch this material willfully? This isn't about being woke as I'm sure some spacklehead will attempt to politicize this subject sooner or later. It's about what is the decent thing to do. It's about integrity. It's about legacy. It seems Brian Wilson is not only aware of this but motivated by it, hence he's not released the material for good reason. Even though these recordings took place prior to the murders it does not exonerate the Manson family to be given a pass to advance to Go and collect their $200. It's best, if these tapes still exist in 2023, that they remain where they are or destroy them. The music world has not been negatively impacted all these years with this material being locked away, and it won't be further impacted if they were destroyed either. The enduring tragedy of all of this is that Charles Manson was incapable of channeling some of his talents in either music or poetry into something productive that would have been a much better road to travel than the one he inevitably chose for himself, which resulted in the needless murders of several people in 1969. But that's just me.
The money could go to the victims families. It would be a shame to destroy the tapes as they are part of a very interesting time in American history. The material won't be released while anyone that was involved in the recordings is still living.

The personal opinion or conviction from the band, on this topic, is very evident in the fact that these recordings, well over 50 years old, have not been released. That's a very crystal clear intention. If it is there conscious wishes to never have this material released then that wish should be honored in perpetuity. As I stated the world as we know it has done just dandy all of these decades without their release. There is nothing to be gained that's relevant by releasing this material but their is something to lose. I betcha Brian Wilson would agree.

I still have the öriginal 45rpm single by the Beach Boys "Bluebirds over the mountains", the B side is "Cease to resist", with Manson on lead vocals. This is a different version from the one that appeared on the "Lie" Manson album.

The b-side of "Bluebirds over the Mountain" is the Beach Boys version of Manson's song "Cease to Exist" called "Never Learn Not To Love" sung by Dennis Wilson with the Beach Boys on backing vocals. Charlie is not on it at all. The single version is about 30 seconds shorter than the album version without the reverse gong at the beginning.

It's so tragic that Sharon Tate and everyone else at that house that night were guilty of nothing other than being in the wrong place at the wrong time. Manson knew Melcher had already moved out of that house but that didn't matter to him. It was the house and the people in it that represented the world keeping that psychopath down. The version I heard waaaaaaaaaaaaay back in the day was that Van Dyke Parks went to see Terry Melcher and found he had moved out. He drove off and was the last person to leave the house alive before the Family entered it. It was Melcher who had finally nixed the Manson album. Melcher was so scared when he heard what had happened he flew out the same day.
Yet according to Tom o Neil in his book chaos. Terry Melcher showed up at Mansons ranch in September 1969 after the murders and begged forgiveness!! At first Neil didn’t believe this story but Melcher confirmed it when one of the girls described the car he was driving. And he told the author that was his car !

that cover photo is a riot. they've shown the house dennis lived in which manson and his following occupied for those few months in '68. gorgeous and picturesque. i think dennis was a lost soul trying to find something that would give him meaning. i also find it interesting mike love spotted manson for the fraud and pariah he was.

Also very interesting is your audio system. I’ve been design/building, restoring, repairing and collecting vacuum tube audio equipment since the time of the original Woodstock festival. Most is for home playback, some is for recording studios (primarily tube microphone preamps and electronics for analog tape machines).
I see your amplifier uses push-pull EL34 output tubes but I can’t identify what brand it and your turntable are. What are they? Also, is that a moving coil phono cartridge step up transformer behind it? I build those as well. I also modify CD players to use tubes in the audio circuitry.
I’m interested in knowing the manufacturer of your gear, it’s nice looking stuff.
While I do listen to CD’s, I never stopped playing vinyl.

The Manson story has so many odd connections and that is what makes it so fascinating. I think of the Beatles trip to India in early 1968. There was Mike Love, Mia Farrow and the Beatles. Soon the Beach Boys would cross paths with Manson. Mia just finished Rosemary's Baby directed by Roman Polanski whose wife Sharon Tate would be killed the next summer. The Beatles would begin writing the songs for the White Album which would heavily influence the Gospel of Charlie. Karma in spades.

Ponder this, imagine Manson joined the Beach Boys. Manson's true and most precious dreams would have been made reality, no one would have been killed, and we could have had a rejuvenated BB ready for the 70's. Yeah, Manson was a psychopath but there are a shitload of those running around not killing people because they are successful and learned to channel that psychopathy toward less murdery outlets and professions. In an alternate universe we are honoring Charles Manson as one of the greatest musicians of the 20th century, while lamenting over the Cobain Cult Killings of 1993.

Having been a Beach Boys fan since the 1970s, I’ve read all about this stuff. I’ve read the biographies, watched the TV movies, read all the news articles. Dennis wasn’t particularly intelligent and tended to lack judgment about pretty much everything. He was easily manipulated because he was very trusting. Being stoned all the time didn’t improve any of this. I love his music but he really needed guidance and supervision…which he never got.
If the Manson tapes still exist, I’ll bet they never see the light of day. I’d also bet they’d turn out to be less good than people remember them to be. I certainly have no desire to hear them.

Dennis was never going to write a book about his side of the connection with the Manson Family. It would only mean more talk about it, when the book was published. Saying that he going to write a book was his way of trying to move away from the subject. Whatever unreleased masters The Beach Boys have with Manson as writer, vocalist, with The Beach Boys and Monson's Family supporting him will only ever be available via a bootleg, or as some marginally legal out-of-copyright process. All old contracts for the publishing rights and performance credits would be hotly disputed, any new settlement of who wrote and played what even more disputed. Mike Love would be on the phone to his lawyers at the mere rumour of the masters escaping his control legitimately. But a high quality bootleg? Maybe. Why not cover the two Flame albums and their contents? That would an interesting set of of legal knots to explain and try to untie....

the beach boys started brother records in 1966. the beatles did not start apple until 1968. yes, the beach boys were labeled uncool in america in the late 60's, but they continued to be very well respected and having hit songs elsewhere such as the UK. i have read about TWO un-released manson full albums; one of which was recorded in western studios (where the beach boys had recorded) and used the studio musicians known as the wrecking crew for back up.
That makes sense; The Wrecking Crew were the real musicians on most of the Laurel Canyon scene bands' albums.
@@wcgcapone carole kaye has said that manson is why she quit doing pop/rock sessions. much is made of dennis's connection to manson, but supposedly brian introduced manson to carol kaye in a LA studio. one party was entering while the other was exiting. reportedly brian also took manson around and introduced him to many in the music business. jim morrison would drive hs car to the ranch in search for drugs. joel McCrea's son Jody from the beach party movies also partied at the ranch. actress angela lansbury wrote a note for her 15 year old daughter giving her/the daughter permission to travel with 'the family'. there were many more h-wood/music celebrities other than neil young and dennis with connections to manson.

It would be a massive migraine headache to release this material.
Who would or should profit from it?
The Beach Boys would look bad profiting from it because of who they recorded it with. No one wants to see any surviving members of the Manson family making money off of this, because the murder victims memory and their families should not be humiliated.
There would be a lot of potential legalities as well regarding who is entitled to what. And what streaming platforms will touch this material willfully?
This isn't about being woke as I'm sure some spacklehead will attempt to politicize this subject sooner or later.
It's about what is the decent thing to do. It's about integrity.
It's about legacy. It seems Brian Wilson is not only aware of this but motivated by it, hence he's not released the material for good reason.
Even though these recordings took place prior to the murders it does not exonerate the Manson family to be given a pass to advance to Go and collect their $200.
It's best, if these tapes still exist in 2023, that they remain where they are or destroy them. The music world has not been negatively impacted all these years with this material being locked away, and it won't be further impacted if they were destroyed either.
The enduring tragedy of all of this is that Charles Manson was incapable of channeling some of his talents in either music or poetry into something productive that would have been a much better road to travel than the one he inevitably chose for himself, which resulted in the needless murders of several people in 1969.
But that's just me.
The money could go to the victims families. It would be a shame to destroy the tapes as they are part of a very interesting time in American history. The material won't be released while anyone that was involved in the recordings is still living.

I'd wager they'd be at peace with never having this material released. The truth is that I'm unaware of any of them calling for its release which tells us two things...they are either unaware of the recordings existence or they are aware and they do not want any part of it.
I'd wager on the latter but that's just me.
Releasing this material does open wounds. Keep that in mind.
This topic is not that black and white. It's terribly grey in this case and the consequences of releasing this material is something that would need to be very carefully examined, with attention to legalities for all involved.
The Beach Boys have crafted a very specific legacy, done mostly with great care within the fabric of American music. One of the things that holds this in place are things like perception. Artists generally have a runway in which they want that perception to take off as best as possible, with a few deviations of misperceptions to be expected...but not too many.
Releasing recordings featuring Charles Manson will create a macabre fascination with the band to just enough people to become a thing, and that is troubling because that perception of interest can begin to alter how they wish to be remembered or referenced, so it's easy to say as an uninvolved person, to suggest they should do this or that, or have this or that done after they're all dead, but it's a completely different perspective though the eyes of the artist who have their names attached to that specific work...forever as it also is with their families.
The personal opinion or conviction from the band, on this topic, is very evident in the fact that these recordings, well over 50 years old, have not been released. That's a very crystal clear intention.
If it is there conscious wishes to never have this material released then that wish should be honored in perpetuity.
As I stated the world as we know it has done just dandy all of these decades without their release. There is nothing to be gained that's relevant by releasing this material but their is something to lose. I betcha Brian Wilson would agree.

You are mistaken. The b-side of "Bluebirds over the Mountain" is the Beach Boys version of Manson's song "Cease to Exist" called "Never Learn Not To Love" sung by Dennis Wilson with the Beach Boys on backing vocals. Charlie is not on it at all. The single version is about 30 seconds shorter than the album version without the reverse gong at the beginning.
I hope this album never gets issued. Manson wasn't just evil, he was a psychopath.

It's so tragic that Sharon Tate and everyone else at that house that night were guilty of nothing other than being in the wrong place at the wrong time. Manson knew Melcher had already moved out of that house but that didn't matter to him. It was the house and the people in it that represented the world keeping that psychopath down. Dennis Wilson may not have been directly responsible for any of it but he certainly played a key role in exposing Manson to the establishment Manson would come to resent. And it makes me sick to hear a guy like Neil Young, who in my mind doesn't know when to just shut the f*ck up about anything, describe Manson as some sort of cosmic poet or whatever he was getting at. Sometimes it's best just to keep your thoughts to yourself Neil, not that discernment and discretion are strengths of yours.
From what I understand, Dennis was trying to escape from Brian's shadow and recruiting people like Manson was a way for him to do that. Unfortunately, he crossed paths with the devil incarnate, him and the rest of those mind-dead zombies who called themselves the family. It always bothered me when the girls who did the actual work of butchering those innocent people tried to pin most of the blame on Manson, claiming St. Charlie had a hold on their minds. BS. You can't commit the level of violence they did unless you have murder in your heart. It's no different than some Waffen SS soldier gunning down women and children and then claiming the Fuhrer made me do it.
A lot of great music came out of that time period but so did a lot of mixed up drugged out kids. Manson was a con-man who took advantage of weak people, including Dennis Wilson, but they all went along for the ride. As Vincent Bugliosi put it, at the end of the day all Charlie ever really accomplished was getting a lot of people killed. Let that be the cautionary tale.

Yet according to Tom o Neil in his book chaos. Terry Melcher showed up at Mansons ranch in September 1969 after the murders and begged forgiveness!! At first Neil didn’t believe this story but Melcher confirmed it when one of the girls described the car he was driving. And he told the author that was his car !
