Let's not forget how absolutely incredible Piper at the Gates of Dawn was. That was basically the first album of it's kind, and it still sounds unique and brilliant to this day. Such a unique blend of rock, psychedelia, folk, and pop was unheard of for it's time.. and really hasn't been done nearly as well since. Plus the transformation that they were forced to go through post Syd's departure is in my opinion the greatest turnaround and evolution that a band has ever undergone. It took em' a few years.. but when they finally found their sound... well.. the rest is history.
I feel extremely fortunate that I was at the In The Flesh tour at Olympic Stadium. It was the ultimate concert for me (never surpassed) and as a result, Animals is my absolute must Pink Floyd album. I remember sitting with my friend, Hugh, and wondering what the hell was going on (the pig was parked up to our left btw). Dogs is a masterpiece and one of the best crafted guitar works of Gilmour. From his opening haunting acoustic chord progressions to the double lead guitar tracking to the killer solo. It really sets the mood and plays well with the lyrics and sentiment of the song. IMHO the only modern day song close to the feeling of Dogs is Porcupine Tree's epic Anesthetize from their Fear of a Blank Planet album.

I was at the July 3rd 1977 show at Madison Square Garden in NYC. To this day it remains the best rock show I have ever experienced. Absolutely mind altering.
Dude, you're making me sick. I missed that show at the Garden because I just graduated from high school and a few weeks before blew all my money to buy a scalped ticket to see Led Zeppelin (Physical Graffiti Tour). Biggest regret of my life missing that show.

Excellent album. Loved hearing it brought back for its anniversary on Roger’s tour a few years ago. I’d thought I’d heard it all, but I was pleasantly surprised by how much I learned about this era of Floyd from this video.
how sad is this? FOR MY BIRTHDAY..... a friend bought EXPENSIVE great seats for Roger Waters' THE WALL at Madison Square Garden. I was super-excited bc I love VISUAL spectacles..... and this was going to be VERY SPECIAL.........but the day of, I had a routine (fake) court date bc police and judges are crooked..... (i was charged with speech criticizing Emperor Bloomberg!)........and my COURT DATE was only supposed to be 5 minutes..... "Not ready for trial; let's come back to court in one month".........no big deal.....but then they did something NEVER DONE BEFORE: THEY THREW ME IN RIKERS (world's biggest jail).....FOR 3 WEEKS (!!!).......with NO arrest or even ALLEGATIONS of wrongdoing!!!!!! OUCH. Law Enforcers have ALWAYS been the TOP EVIL IN HISTORY, from Nazi Germany to Stalin's USSR!
I worked on the European version of this tour- as merchandiser. The first few shows were not very together and they took a few days off, sent the crew and equipment to Antwerp to rehearse the cues to a backing track while the band went back to London to rehearse. I was very pleased to get this gig because I had been watching the Floyd since 1967 at UFO and Middle Earth but the sound on the first few gigs, Dortmund in particular, was very ragged. By the time they got back to England to do the shows there they were spot on.
If you're an Animals fan, you'll love the Wish You Were Here Experience Edition. It has the "rough" beginnings of Dogs and Sheep performed live before these songs were refined in the studio.
@@culloden23 Dave sings it fast because there's more lyrics. Roger saw/heard the issue and edited the lyrics for the album. It's great listening either way.
Pink Floyd has one of the most interesting history’s of any band. Most bands don’t survive the things they did to become one of the biggest bands in the world!!!!!
Calling Richard Wright’s contributions as “complimentary” is a grave disservice. He was a major musical force to the band’s sound until Roger’s dictatorial style kicked in.
Thank God I found Pink Floyd in my young teens around the late 80s...they have been in my life ever since and always will...all the solo stuff too...amazing...long live the Floyd!!
fantastic video. the bit about the album cover is crazy..so much trouble you had to go through before photoshop haha. animals is a brilliant, timeless album, the kind that demands many listens and gets better every time.
From "Dark Side of the Moon" through to "The Wall"...no band that I know besides Led Zeppelin has ever created such a musical statement over 4 consecutive albums. These guys were brilliant together as far as the music goes. Unfortunately Roger wanted total control over that aspect of it too which basically put an end to that. I saw 2 Pink Floyd concerts without Roger being there and they were both awesome. The effects and everything were very well received by a Detroit audience and it proved to me that one man don't make a band great, they all have to do it for it to be great. Roger was left out of that party.
I don't know, while they may not be given credit they deserve, ELP should be mentioned, Yes' Yes Album through Tormato or even Genesis' Nursery Cryme-Trick of a Tail. Especially Yes and Genesis' lyrics. But then, one could argue the same for Rush.
@@vitoguido3258 I love "Yes" and Peter Gabriel, both with and without Genesis, but neither of these bands came anywhere close to having the kind of impact Floyd has had. You ask someone like my dad- who unfortunately passed a few years back- who Yes or Peter Gabriel is and he would've had no idea- he played bluegrass music and hated rock, pop, etc.- but he knew who Pink Floyd was. MY mother- same way- her favorite artist is Ann Murray- but she knows who Pink Floyd is, everyone does. When I was a kid growing up in the late 70s, early 80s- I knew who they were before I even started listening to music. I already knew who they were and was curious to hear their music because I had heard so much about it through pop culture, my older siblings, etc. I had never heard of Yes though- or Peter Gabriel- in fact the only other musical talent I knew of at that age was Zepplin. They were just as talked about, just as large of a part of pop culture as Floyd was.
@@stoneysdead689 Hence why I mentioned the lack of credit due. However, while Floyd's early stuff is interesting, to say the least, Dark Side of the Moon through The Wall only accounts for 5 out of like 14 albums. While their presence was certainly felt in the mainstream, Yes' and Genesis influence was just felt throughout the Prog world at large, in my opinion and the body of substantial work to offer far exceeds that of Floyd. Still, at the end of the day, I'm a junky for all of it.
Thanks vinyl geek, I went to that tour in 1977 at the Anaheim Stadium in California 😜 it was raining, then the rain 🌧 stopped and there was a double rainbow 🌈 then Pink Floyd came on stage and performed! 🐖🐑🐕 also attended Pulse Tour at the Rose Bowl 1994 in Pasadena! 🌒😎 and David Gilmour at Hollywood Bowl 2016!!! ❤️😘
One of my favorite lines in a Floyd album is on the song sheep. 'Wave upon wave of demented avengers march cheerfully out if obscurity, into the dream'
Roger sounded like the most insufferable person ever the way he behaved toward his band mates and the crew during that tour but I don’t blame him for getting pissed off at fans letting off fireworks which does ruin the experience and puts other people in harms way.
Constant touring and being away from your family will make one quite jaded and miserable. Being on the road is great when youre young but as you get older youre pretty much over it.
Nicely done. This confirmed all the rumors that I heard many years ago before the web and RUclips. Some of your report about the shenanigans of the flying pigs had me cracking up. Thanks for your work. Great job.
I love how in-depth your analysis was of the album and the following tour. I was surprised that you left out the third encore of the Montreal concert, where Gilmour walked off the stage and left Snowy White to play guitar alone. That was probably just another thing that led to the tension surrounding the making of The Wall.
WOW...ok... For those of you who blame the bands "end" on their "egos", it's pretty obvious there was only one ego that split them up. MY hat's off to David, Nick and especially Rick, for tolerating Roger as long as they did. If it weren't for his ability to write the lyrics so well, they probably would have said F*** this much sooner.
Considering that he also wrote music better than they did and faster, they really didn't have an option. The guy may well have been a total ass, but considering the shoddy quality of the records they made without him, it's hard to fault him.
It's so hard to watch people talk about a band with none of the band's music in the video. I understand that Pink Floyd music might be outside the budget of a youtube channel, but it's still a bummer.
Pink Floyd is one of my absolute favorite acts. What's really weird is that the last Pink Floyd album I ever bought was wish you were here. And with the resurgence of vinyl the last decade or so and all the talk about acts from those days I've been doing a lot of soul searching about why I don't seem to have albums from some of my favorite acts. By the way for some background, I graduated from high school in 1972. But I think I found the reason. In the early part of the 1970s I became a bit of an audiophile, culminating with me building my own dynaco 400 amplifier and a pat 5 preamp. And that followed with me becoming a Hi-Fi salesman in 1976 through 1982. The stores I worked at also had an album selection and I was able to crack open albums from time to time and listen to them and use them to demonstrate systems. What happened was my musical taste temporarily changed to focus more on classical music and "audiophile" recordings. This is also when I became a huge fan of bands like return to forever. And then in the '80s I started raising a family and focusing more on surround sound systems for movies and stuff like that. So around 10 years ago I started picking up where I left off. It's kind of comical that suddenly I am trying to collect all those old Pink Floyd albums and a lot of the stuff that came out after 1975 from bands I liked but I never purchased their stuff. By the way, the one exception would be genesis. I bought everything they ever produced except for calling all stations. Watching comfortably numb on the pulse DVD still brings an emotional response from me. The music coupled with the light show is one of the most tremendous examples of live music I've ever experienced. Meanwhile, I'm just starting to get into animals.
No it’s pretty close being as the wall and dsotm are seen as some of the greatest albums of all time. And this album isn’t completely original like their others are. It’s based on animal farm the book
I’m a huge fan of Rogers ,and I can’t deny the artistic presence of the rest of the members of the band , especially David G virtuosity. But if you look at the Rogers solo albums you might be able to see why he is pink.
And yet he wasn't Pink. He didn't sing the majority of the material, and David wrote ALL of the guitar virtuosity, which is 90% of what hooks you into listening to Floyd. Roger was an incredible lyricist, and an average musician. His solo albums were awful, and The Final Cut was the worst PF album next to Ummagumma.
I just got a record player for Christmas and I’ve just been goin crazy with listening to vinyls and getting them and such. I’ve already had a huge love for music but these vinyl’s just makes me have more love for music i can just put my phone down listen and look at the art on the vinyl cases and such.
I bought Animals in 1988 after hearing the album at a friend's house , at first I didn't really appreciate how good this album really was until one night I went to Hammerjacks in Baltimore MD and saw a band called The Machine ( a Pink Floyd tribute band ) perform the whole album . This band was so good and they didn't just sound like Pink Floyd they even looked like the guys , me and my friend took some acid before we went in the club not knowing anything about who was playing that night and had never heard of this band before but boy what a great show these guys put on the only thing I wished they would have played the album in it's original running order , after that night Animals became my favorite Floyd album and perhaps one of my all time favorite albums of all time
Animals is one of Pink Floyd’s best and one of the easiest to analyze. And Roger. A mad genius you can never fully get behind his actions but an individual you can never fully condemn
I missed the Cleveland show on this tour. Whhaaaahhhh!!!!!! But made up for it by seeing The Wall at Nassau Coliseum in February 1980. Up to then, the best show I'd ever seen! And remains the same to this day!
During a solo tour of the Wall in Philadelphia he stopped before comfortably numb and told the story of how the song was conceived and said he played better that night than he ever had
You My Friend Are a wealth of info! Love it. I have always like and tried at the time, those old days ,to break into The Floyd. It won't easy breaking that Beatles Stones Mold. I photographed the classic cover for Pink Floyd from on top of a 4 story block of flats south of Battersea Park Road. Camera: Sinar P Professional with 65mm Super Angulon wide angle lens. 5"x4" Kodak Daylight Ektachrome Film.
Amazing! Beautiful work!!
Excellent! We're you working the day the pig slipped her mooring?
@@peterhlinka4789 Yeah waiting to shoot the final image. It was a real shock watching it disappear up into the clouds before it was into the position we needed.

I can only imagine the fright of it resonating all the way back to the desks of the bean counters. Thanks Howard, for sharing this epochal moment in Floydian history.
Only recently did I find out it was Waters getting pissed off and then spitting on the fan. I still have the show booklet but alas, my t-shirt has long been gone. Wonderful memories indeed, including the quadrophonic sound.
I graduated from high school in 75. I was in huge fan back then, but I learned more about this band in this segment than anything I’ve heard throughout all these decades. Thanks for putting this up; it was very well done!
I don't see Roger as an ego. I see him as a visionary with social anxiety. He has a brilliant creative mind.
Yea it’s the classic Paul vs John scenario
Dogs is a masterpiece and one of the best crafted guitar works of Gilmour. From his opening haunting acoustic chord progressions to the double lead guitar tracking to the killer solo. It really sets the mood and plays well with the lyrics and sentiment of the song. IMHO the only modern day song close to the feeling of Dogs is Porcupine Tree's epic Anesthetize from their Fear of a Blank Planet album.
im a huge floyd fan You only hear about dark side, the wall, and wish u were hear, but their earlier, and later albums hardly ever get spoken about, david gilmore is one of my top 5 favorite guitar players, i am sincerely thankful for this upload....
Meddle is a musical masterpiece as well.
For me #1 is Jeff Beck...... #2 is very closely followed by David Gilmour,
(basically INTERCHANGEABLE )
‘If you didn’t care what happened to me, and I didn’t care..for you’ classic ✊🍻
Dude, I love your channel, it's one of the best things on youtube. I mean that sincerely, but I just need to point out it's *exacerbated* not exasperated. Anyway, your channel is freaking fantastic and I hope you're producing content for many years to come.
This is my favorite Pink Floyd album.
All of the Pink Floyd videos on this channel are historical treasures. Thank you!
Awesome documentary! Many thanks for using several of my concert photos taken on July 1, 1977. ET
Wow, I thought I knew a lot on this subject with all the articles I have read but there was a ton I didn't know. Thanks for the in depth analysis. Pink Floyd is my #1 rock band bar none. When I listen to the great music on this album and The Wall I always have in the back of my mind that they were falling apart and not getting along. It makes it bitter sweet as opposed to Meddle and Dark Side of the Moon.
This is my go to album for camping while around the fire with my buddies. After that, AIC Jar of Flies. This occurs almost every weekend out here in the beautiful Colorado Rockies. Life is good!
Animals has been my goto hangover cure album since mid 90s. Highly recommended.
"Not ready for trial; let's come back to court in one month".........no big deal.....but then they did something NEVER DONE BEFORE:
THEY THREW ME IN RIKERS (world's biggest jail).....FOR 3 WEEKS (!!!).......with NO arrest or even ALLEGATIONS of wrongdoing!!!!!!
Middle Earth ! Those were the days. Do you remember when it was Electric Garden ?
Roy Weard, what an experience !
My favorite Floyd album, and who wouldn't want to hear it in concert with surround sound haha!!!
Gotta say, this is a fascinating documentary and so well put together.
If you're an Animals fan, you'll love the Wish You Were Here Experience Edition. It has the "rough" beginnings of Dogs and Sheep performed live before these songs were refined in the studio.
Raving and Drooling and You Gotta be Crazy
I like You Gotta Be Crazy sung by Dave. It’s faster and has a simple but effective Roger bass line.
@@culloden23 Dave sings it fast because there's more lyrics. Roger saw/heard the issue and edited the lyrics for the album. It's great listening either way.
Color me impressed! I usually expect to bail on such "think pieces," but this presentation was well-informed and well presented. Thanks!
Possibly my favorite 'Floyd album .
Thanks for a great review.... I was there....Dark Side live in ‘73.....Roger is a musical genius.....Pink Floyd live were like no other band 👍🏻🥂
My personal favorite Pink Floyd album.
Pink Floyd has one of the most interesting history’s of any band. Most bands don’t survive the things they did to become one of the biggest bands in the world!!!!!
Fantastic stuff. Love hearing the story of how greatness is achieved. Animals ranks as my favourite Floyd album
best unofficial documentary, well done.
Dude, these Animals episodes are gold. Gold! [subbed]
So much I did not know! Floyd is one of my favorites. You narration and emotion throughout was stellar. Keep up the great work!!
Roger was Genius,
David was Brilliant,
Richard was Complimentary,
Nick was a Driving Force.
Together = Magic Carpet Ride...
Love the vintage themed set. Subbed.
Excellent video. Enormous amount of P.F. info and all of it was very interesting. Thank you vinyl dude.
hasn't this video been uploaded before or am i insane?
Was thinking that myself.
Yeah just in two separate parts
You are correct
I think this is a merging of a Two-part series a few months back.
Its as recycled as this poseur influencers aesthetic.
Thanks for this great video. I was at the June 25, 1977 show that you mention twice. What a concert!
Animals is pure art, one of their best.
fantastic video. the bit about the album cover is crazy..so much trouble you had to go through before photoshop haha. animals is a brilliant, timeless album, the kind that demands many listens and gets better every time.
Wish we had a recording of one of these shows
you gotta be crazy is on youtube. they were playing Animals songs on the previous tour under different names
ANIMALS IS A MASTERPIECE!! ⚡️⭐️Hellz Yeah Eric!! PLAY LOUD!!!
The guitar solo at the end of “Pigs (Three Different Ones)” is the angriest expression of emotion in guitar playing ever, IMHO.
Just revisited 'Animals' recently... This is such a cool breakdown of the album. Thank you and keep em' coming!!
One of my favorite lines in a Floyd album is on the song sheep.
'Wave upon wave of demented avengers march cheerfully out if obscurity, into the dream'
The best Pink Floyd album; the music, the art work on the cover, the sentiment, the lyrics.
There has also been talk that the band had discovered the delights of South America's finest powder.
@@Ontariosound Not ground coffee?
@@Ontariosound I would be willing to bet that wasn’t the only recreational substance they were partaking in at the time.

Nicely done. This confirmed all the rumors that I heard many years ago before the web and RUclips. Some of your report about the shenanigans of the flying pigs had me cracking up. Thanks for your work. Great job.
THIS VIDEO BEING UPLOADED HAS MADE MY DAY YES GET INNNN
Roger had the songs... the others had excuses...
Very well written & informative- great work!
Meanwhile, I'm just starting to get into animals.
who was trained not to spit on the fan
Apparently not
Ok. That’s pretty good.
Who was trying to get on the stage
Who was sedated by trained personel
Who had arrived to the show on his own
You are an amazing host and a true news reporter. Unbiased
Hot take, this is their best album, and it isn't close.
Agreed
No it’s pretty close being as the wall and dsotm are seen as some of the greatest albums of all time. And this album isn’t completely original like their others are. It’s based on animal farm the book
@@Greggers1516 the wall is damn near unlistenable start to finish. DSoTM is fantastic. I just find myself listening to Animals more than any of them.
@@alanpreston1822 Gotta disagree. The Wall is a masterpiece.
@@Greggers1516 Animals being based on Animal Farm is what makes it my favorite. I fuckin love that book.
I think I love Animals almost as much as you! I enjoy the in depth look at the album, and your video on The Wall as well.
I’m a huge fan of Rogers ,and I can’t deny the artistic presence of the rest of the members of the band , especially David G virtuosity. But if you look at the Rogers solo albums you might be able to see why he is pink.
The only good solo album from Roger is The Final Cut and that's because Dave and Nick play on it.
Amused to Death is a Vocal on today's topics. I mean man saw the future.

Meds have made Roger feel much better since the 1990's.

One of the best albums ever! Love hang’n with friends listening to this album
I missed the Cleveland show on this tour. Whhaaaahhhh!!!!!! But made up for it by seeing The Wall at Nassau Coliseum in February 1980. Up to then, the best show I'd ever seen! And remains the same to this day!
Love the content brother keep it coming!
During a solo tour of the Wall in Philadelphia he stopped before comfortably numb and told the story of how the song was conceived and said he played better that night than he ever had
