Slip On Through: The Beach Boys song, because their harmonies are so smooth they slip right through into your heart. Break On Through: The Doors song, because they break into your brain like a burglar and force your head to bob uncontrollably. Both amazing songs, but different songs and bands.

I think a more in depth review of Surfs Up would be really cool, like how The Wall was covered. A song by song review, a video about the making of the album and Carl taking leadership of the band, and something else like what was going on with Brian at that point
I picked up "Sunflower" during the late 70s when I was trying to complete my collection. I put it on the turntable, and the music blew me away. I couldn't believe it was sitting in a $1.99 bucket. For me its Friends. On another note, you're actually the guy who made me consider listening to the beach boys with your pet sounds review. Before that everyone told me that they sucked. Glad I found out the truth.
@@41moose Actually, I think The Beach Boys and The Kinks are more analogous. The Beatles are far beyond both bands (and I love both bands). Both did brilliant work and both did some real crap. Both provide a strong sense of place. Both had ambitions beyond their grasp.
I think That's Why God Made the Radio deserves a spot on this list. All the surviving Beach Boys along with key sidemen made an album that is consistently enjoyable. There are lyrical nods to the early fun in the sun along with more mature subjects of aging, mortality, and loss. It's a beautiful album that I keep returning to and a fitting bookend to an unbelievable career and legacy. Give me a thumbs up and comment if you agree.
I agree that it was a surprisingly good fresh effort in 2012. It doesn't make my top 10, but not far out. I rank That's Why God Made the Radio 12th, so still well into the top half, and for me higher than Love You, Smiley Smile, and Friends which made his top 10.
I just listened to Sunflower all the way through for my first time. I’d skimmed through the album and All I Wanna Do is one of my favorite Beach Boys songs of all time, but damn! Sunflower is great and one of the few albums that I can sit all the way through without skipping a track.
The beach boys were a band full of potential held back by the american music industry, their manager (their father) and mike love. If Brian Wilson was just left to do what he wanted to do they might have been able to reach the heights and popularity of the beatles. But pet sounds is a perfect album and I am very happy for it being in my life, that album alone makes the beach boys one of the greats for me.
@@Jackson-jd1um but he didn't stop it from doing so. The only thing he really changed on pet sounds was the lyrics to hang on to your ego. Brians drug abuse and other stuff is the reason smile wasn't finished
Great list and I would have All Summer Long in my top 10. Nice to see you've discovered the late 60's/early 70's albums when the band wasn't selling as much. Lots of great stuff there.
If the beach boys replaced Student Demonstration Time with (Wouldn't it Be Nice To) Live Again (which was planned by dennis to be on the album) it would've been the perfect album for me. People dislike Take a Load of Your Feet, but personally I think it compliments the album well unlike SDT.
I love this band and I think that 'their non hits are overlooked. The sad thing with albums like Surfs up and Sunflower are many of the songs left off due to "Beach Boys politics"! The two Dennis Wilson tracks not on Surfs up is a crime! They were always a band that could shoot itself in the foot at the drop of a hat!
I can’t explain why, but The Beach Boys Love You is just my favorite album ever made. It is just so strange but also pure and sweet and completely sincere in a way that only Brian can be
Beach Boys Love You wasn’t even close to being Dennis’ last hurrah. LA Album (1979) would be considered that since Dennis’ songs from the Bamboo sessions were put on here since he pretty much gave up on that solo album for a variety of reasons. And that’s the last batch of songs Dennis would release before his death. Love You was mostly a Brian Wilson solo effort.
Learned a lot. Now I'll have to pick up Sunflower and Friends. They sound like my cup o'tea! Btw, I'd love to see you do the same discography review thing for one of favorite 60's bands, The Monkees.
For me the greatest Beach Boys song and one of the greatest songs ever written. They did a great job in adding it to the "Bed Montage" in Love and Mercy (my favorite part of the movie).
It's a tough one - Surf's Up is pretty inconsistent and throwaway up until you get to the last 3 songs, the 3 Brian Wilson songs. That suite of songs is so ridiculously profound and introspective and transcendental they kinda carry the rest of the album. Genuinely think Surf's Up is the greatest song ever recorded
Yep that song deserves a shout out. Not only in my BB top 5… I really believe it’s one of the greatest songs ever recorded. Hyperbole? Maybe, but it is a perfect song and it truly sticks to your soul
Wild Honey, Sunflower, Surf's Up, and Holland are all excellent albums that are too often forgotten. I think 20/20 and Friends are pretty damn good as well, though more uneven.
I think Brian Wilson’s “Smile” is addictive listening. The album is like a musical puzzle you can get lost in and the melodies stick in your head forever!
Strictly musically speaking, from around 1964 to 1974, The Beach Boys could almost do no wrong. My personal top picks would be: 1. Sunflower 2. Friends 3. Pet Sounds 4. 20/20 5. Today 6. Surf's Up 7. Carl & The Passions 8. Summer Days (and Summer Nights) 9. Holland 10. Love You
This is a great list and I'm so glad you love Sunflower so much, but I think Holland really should've been on the list. I would rank them: 10: Summer Days 9: Smiley Smile 8: Love You 7: Wild Honey 6: Holland 5: Surf's Up 4: Friends 3: Today! 2: Sunflower 1: Pet Sounds
Sherry She Needs me was recorded in between the 15 Big Ones sessions and the Love You sessions. It was a rerecording of a song from the Summer Days sessions called Sandy. The song Sandy hasn't been officially released and only appears on the Unsurpassed Masters bootleg. Sadly, that version never got a lead vocal, but other then that it's pretty much done. As for Sherry, that was added to the Made in California box set with a new remix that adds the original backing vocals to the fade. Both Sandy and the original mix of Sherry She Needs Me can be found in amazing quality on RUclips. Remember, Sandy was first, Sherry was second. P.s. Brian later recorded it as She Says She Needs Me for his album Imagination
Pretty good list, I gotta say. Man, where is Holland? Holland is a pretty solid top five for me. Even though the best of, say, Surf's Up reaches more stratospheric heights, I would say there's really not a bad song on Holland. Dipping into the Beach Boys extended universe some, I would certainly give high marks to Dennis's Pacific Ocean Blue and Brian's That Lucky Old Sun. I can respect the decision to not include SMiLE. That said, if I had to choose one favorite body of musical work of all time, that honor would have to go to SMiLE. Wow, it's just sublimely inventive, yet still conveys classic beauty. For me, it doesn't get better than SMiLE.
I have to agree with your assessment of Summer Days, it's like Brian wrote California Girls which is a top tier song then rushed a bunch of filler material to release an album. That being said I really do like Let Him Run Wild
Man I was really hoping you’d include the smile sessions as an album in and of itself. But I understand why you didn’t, great list I, glad someone finally shed some light on their brilliant post pet sounds/SMiLE era albums.
I can't believe I just found your channel! great stuff man, I love the decor and the vintage vibes. Great list, too - The Beach Boys Today! is such a fantastic album, plus, it contains a historical moment - Please Let Me Wonder, the first song written by Brian under psychedelic influence. It's so remarkable because up until that song, the album is slowly ramping up in harmony until it finally breaks free of the surfing sound in Please Let Me Wonder and a whole new landscape of slower and richer ballades is introduced.
There’s a great live double album, also can’t believe you didn’t list Holland as one of the best albums they ever did!! Some good solo albums by Brian Wilson too imo
@@desperatemohammedantheworl5833 I feel that the Good Vibrations summarised Mt Vernon and Fairway in the best possible way - ruclips.net/video/41Ml5HHuNp8/видео.html
I think you're talking about The Beach Boys In Concert from 1973... that's a great record. The tracklist sails really good between their discography up until that point...they can go from the softer Pet Sounds songs to rocking out on "Marcella"...I think that's their best live era
Perfectly right on Friends - almost perfect except the car wreck at the end. Perfectly right about Surf's Up - Student Demonstration Time makes me vicerally angry. Sunflower is also fantastic (and both it and Surf's Up are hidden quad albums) - I'm still missing a copy of Sunflower - I never find it and so far I have only been able to find it in the UK discogs.

This is so cool, I've been waiting too long for this video to came out, Beach Boys are so great but so hard to find in good shape, thanks for this, love your work !
Ha! I've had no idea they had so many albums. Certainly helps explain part of the massive fame. Clearly I need to listen to more Beach Boys because I don't have a strong opinion on any of these.
absolutely do it. They're sound changes so much but they always have their trademark harmonies. They have something for everyone and I'm sure you won't regret it.
Extremely questionable list. Where is All Summer Long? That’s the definitive great BB’s album pre-Today. Today is easily second best. Also, your placement of Summer Days And Summer Nights is brutal, almost criminally bad in logic. Most of the great albums of all time have a couple weak tracks. I’d put that at 3 any day. I find it absurd that much of their earlier stuff (probably 1964-65) is now regarded as fluff by the hardcore fans of this beloved group that are often more pretentious than even the Beatles fans. Commerciality is not inherently bad. Of course Pet Sounds is their Magnum Opus (and Smile maybe could’ve been their next best if finished in ‘67), but they were the great American band of the ‘60s because they were in touch with reality. The abstractions which haunted their sound post-Pet Sounds is the real fluff in terms of albums.
I don’t know… songs like ‘I Get Around’ & ‘California Girls’ are amazing musically, sophisticatedly advanced & almost otherworldly, but the lyrics to those songs is adolescent drivel. “Teeshirts, cutoffs and a pair of thongs”
Here is my original comment on Patreon. Yes I know it is long, but worth it. Here it is: 10. That’s Why God Made The Radio 📻 (2012) The group's initial album of original material in 20 years marked the Beach Boys' 50th anniversary with the return of early member David Marks for the first time since 1963. Brian Wilson wrote most of the songs and sang or shared lead on all but two. All of this leads to what amounts to a goodwill effort with just a handful of memorable songs to join the celebration. Best Songs: The Title Track, Isn’t It Time 9. Shut Down Volume 2 (1964) The Beach Boys released three albums in 1964, a transitional year. This was the first. It's also the first album without guitarist David Marks. "Don't Worry Baby" takes Brian Wilson to another level, as the world begins to change around them in more ways than one: The Beatles were just starting to dominate the charts when 'Shut Down Volume 2' was released. A whole new era was right around the corner. Best Tracks: Fun, Fun, Fun; Pom, Pom Play Girl; Don’t Worry Baby and The Warmth of The Sun Worst Track: The Title Track, I believe they should of retitled the album as “This Car of Mine” so it didn’t coincide with the 1963 compilation LP “Shut Down Volume 1”. * Love Dennis Wilson’s lead vocals in “This Car of Mine” * The cover version of Louie, Louie is way better than the original by The Kingsmen 8. Surfer Girl (1963) Brian Wilson finally gets full producer credit on the Beach Boys' third album, which includes some great singles (the title track, "Little Deuce Coupe," "In My Room") mixed in with the usual early filler. Best Tracks: The Title Track, In My Room, Hawaii Okay Track: Our Car Club * Love “Catch A Wave” and even the Jan & Dean Hit “Sidewalk Surfin’” which I also love mimics some similarities in the sound overall and both of them compliment each other really well!! 7. 20/20 (1969) A mess of an album released during a messy period for the band, '20/20' was mostly made up of outtakes from earlier sessions, including some that dated back to 'Smile.' It didn't help that Brian Wilson was in a psychiatric hospital at the time. Still, some good songs are collected here, even if the end result is sorta all over the place. Good Songs: Bluebirds Over The Mountain, Our Prayer and Cabinessence Least Favorite Track: Never Learn Not To Love is too controversial because of the connection to Charles Manson * The two best songs with Carl Wilson on lead vocals after God Only Knows are Darlin’ and I Can Hear Music * The Greatest Track off this album 💿 with out of question is Do It Again!! 6. Friends (1968) I will let the Vinyl Geek’s pick speak for itself but basically the band was still reeling from 'Smile' and its aftereffects when it released its 14th album, a brief peace-and-love excursion inspired by Maharishi Mahesh Yogi. Dennis Wilson co-wrote his first songs, and Brian Wilson contributed his last huge batch until 1977. But he was mostly checked out by this point anyway. This was when Carl Wilson really became the leader of the band til his lung cancer death in 1998. Standout Song: The Title Track 5. The Beach Boys Party! Album (1965) Don't let the "Recorded 'Live' at a Beach Boys' Party" tag line fool you. The record was put together in the studio as a loosely constructed jam session among friends (Jan and Dean's Dean Torrence memorably sang the hit "Barbara Ann"), but it's every bit as conceived as Brian WIlson's other productions. Acoustic covers of Beatles, Bob Dylan and Beach Boys songs make this an intriguing lead-in to 'Pet Sounds.' This is the very first album overall to be considered “Unplugged” long before MTV and the release of the Beatles Esher Demos!! Best Tracks: I Should’ve Known Better, Tell Me Why, You’ve Got To Hide Your Love Away (Dennis Takes Lead Vocal) and Barbara Ann + Papa Oom Wow Wow * I really enjoy all three of their cover versions to those songs by The Beatles * Please check out the 2015 album Uncovered and Unplugged! which remixes the original album plus an expansion of 81 songs! * Also check out the non-album single “The Little Girl I Once Knew” which is one of my favorite songs by them and it is definitely worth listening! 4. All Summer Long (1964) The group’s sixth album is its first truly great one. The surfing songs were mostly gone, and with the Beatles and other bands nipping, Brian Wilson constructed a work that looked outside of the beach and cars for inspiration. 'All Summer Long' included the Beach Boys' first No. 1, "I Get Around." More significantly, it positioned Wilson for grander things to come. Best Songs: I Get Around, Wendy, Little Honda, Don’t Back Down and Girls On The Beach Least Favorite Tracks: I cannot stand listening to the goofy tunes of Drive-In and the Unnecessary Our Favorite Recording Sessions * I believe the song “Girls On The Beach” (the title track to the film of the same name from 1965) is the sequel to “Surfer Girl” 3. Summer Days [And Summer Nights!!] (1965) The record company wasn't happy with the Beach Boys' artistic evolution on 'Today!,' so four months later the group returned with this peace offering: a collection of old-school girl- and California-themed songs (see "California Girls"). But Brian Wilson's adult ear was still tuned to more ambitious places, so 'Summer Days (And Summer Nights!!)' comes off like teenage radio fantasies swathed in grown-up sounds. Their next proper album, 'Pet Sounds,' skipped the compromises. Best Tracks: California Girls; Help Me, Rhonda; Amusement Parks U.S.A., Then I Kissed Her, Girl Don’t Tell Me and You’re So Good To Me Least Favorite Song: I’m Bugged At My Ol’ Man which is a song about Murray Wilson 2. Today! (1965) Brian Wilson's run-up to 'Pet Sounds' is a magnificent blend of orchestral pop and introspective songwriting. Inspired by Phil Spector's Wall of Sound production, as well as by the growing notion of the album as an art form, Wilson assembled 'The Beach Boys Today!' to play as a conceptual piece that flows from one emotional peak to another. A masterful achievement that signaled a bright new era. Best Tracks: The first eleven tracks are masterpieces Least Favorite Track: The Last One on the album titled “Bull Session With The ‘Big Daddy’” 1. [The GOAT ALBUM] Pet Sounds (1966) Arguably the most gorgeous pop record ever made and certainly one of the greatest albums ever conceived. Brian Wilson was spurred by the Beatles' creative leaps to take his own musical visions to Spectorian heights. It barely cracked the Top 10, but 'Pet Sounds' ushered in a new period of experiments in sound that eventually led to Wilson's legend and downfall. A landmark recording filled with strings, brass and harmonies upon harmonies that's still influencing people today. * I love every song off this album, no complaints here!! * Also check out the 30th and 50th anniversary box sets and listen to my favorite non-album instrumental “Trombone Dixie”!!
There's no credence to this list without Surfer Girl😧 again this guy's not a real Beach Boys fan!!! He even admitted that he just listened to many of these albums surfer girl to me is a classic and maybe there best???✌
@Frederick Franchi I agree with the criticism of how he listened to some of the albums too briefly just before making the video. But, I am a "real" Beach Boys fan, have 33 of their albums (including Surfer Girl) on physical media and know their history well, and Surfer Girl doesn't make my top 10 either. I am aware that many fans have it in their top 10 or top 5, though. I think opinions on Surfer Girl in particular tend to be split on age. Fans born before 1960 (to pick a year) tend to really appreciate it more than those born after 1960.

Fantastic video! Love You has been slowly becoming my favorite BB album, it's so unapologetically honest, and those farty late 70s Moog synth tones were an excellent choice for instrumentation on Brian's part
Glad to see you had Carl & The Passions - So Tough in your honorable mentions, it’s an underrated album for sure, even for relative beach boys fans, i think it’s fantastic, and i might put it in the top 10 myself!
I didn't know about the exclusion of, 'I 'guess I'm dumb', from the 'Beach Boys Today'!? I had recently discovered Glen Campbell's first rate version of said song and thought , this has got a real Brian Wilson circa. '66 prod. vibe to it, and ,yes ,even as an instrumental it would of made a stelar addition to the 'Today' lp.
Hi, there Vinyl cool guy, Long time no see. Ah the Beach Boys. No band even comes close to those harmonies. There is not and there will never be another. A class all their own. This being said... Interesting fact: in the Endless Harmony documentary series Brian claims Love You to be his favourite Beach Boys album.
EDIT: What a great summing up of an under appreciated LP.
He still calls Love You his favorite album in recent interviews!
@@Agos226 I never knew that. Played it this afternoon and while it's no classic Love You still holds up as enjoyable listen, though IMO the audio mix seemed oddly hollow.

I think a more in depth review of Surfs Up would be really cool, like how The Wall was covered. A song by song review, a video about the making of the album and Carl taking leadership of the band, and something else like what was going on with Brian at that point
Definitely an album where every track has interesting things to say about them.
How was The Wall covered?
I picked up "Sunflower" during the late 70s when I was trying to complete my collection. I put it on the turntable, and the music blew me away. I couldn't believe it was sitting in a $1.99 bucket. Best $1.99 I ever spent.

3) Today
4) Surf's Up
5) Holland
6) Summer Days And Summer Nights
7) Love You
8) 20/20

For me its Friends. On another note, you're actually the guy who made me consider listening to the beach boys with your pet sounds review. Before that everyone told me that they sucked. Glad I found out the truth.
Beatles/beach boys go hand and hand
Haha yep! You can't have one without the other.
@@FucklesTheEnchilada With an honorable mention to The Who! I see Sells Out just been rereleased. Check it out if you havent already.
@@41moose Actually, I think The Beach Boys and The Kinks are more analogous. The Beatles are far beyond both bands (and I love both bands).
Both did brilliant work and both did some real crap. Both provide a strong sense of place. Both had ambitions beyond their grasp.
Friends is such a lovely album. So inviting. I personally think Pet Sounds is overrated though. Maybe because I listened to it to death. I dunno lol.
Underrated for sure. A few songs sound a little bland but there are some gems on this record.
I will check it out, cheers for the tip
I agree that it was a surprisingly good fresh effort in 2012. It doesn't make my top 10, but not far out. I rank That's Why God Made the Radio 12th, so still well into the top half, and for me higher than Love You, Smiley Smile, and Friends which made his top 10.
@@strawmancomicsoverrated. If it wasn’t the reunion album it would be lost in the mix
I just listened to Sunflower all the way through for my first time. I’d skimmed through the album and All I Wanna Do is one of my favorite Beach Boys songs of all time, but damn! Sunflower is great and one of the few albums that I can sit all the way through without skipping a track.
Mona on Love You is a truly incredible song. I really wish it were longer than two minutes.
I love Mona almost as much as Brian likes Be My Baby!
I was new at work and my colleague introduced herself. Her name was Mona. And there it was again in my head for weeks. :D
A literal masterpiece
i love '''i wanna pick you up''
The beach boys were a band full of potential held back by the american music industry, their manager (their father) and mike love.
If Brian Wilson was just left to do what he wanted to do they might have been able to reach the heights and popularity of the beatles.
But pet sounds is a perfect album and I am very happy for it being in my life, that album alone makes the beach boys one of the greats for me.
I think it was more brian wilsons fault than mike love but idk
Pet sounds alone rivals the Beatles best

HELLO FELLOW MUSIC LOVERS
Fantastic video man! Feel free to dig into my reviews if you want to learn anything deeper on these albums, I cover the Beach Boys often!
L.A. Light Album is ok too, if you can avoid the disco version of here comes the night. (And even that had ok arrangements.)
"Till I Die" is enough to push the Surfs Up album to number 2, in my book. That track is such a beautiful insight into Brian's head.
I totally agree with you 100%!
Sunflower is my album. I absolutely love it.
Wild Honey, Sunflower, Surf's Up, and Holland are all excellent albums that are too often forgotten. I think 20/20 and Friends are pretty damn good as well, though more uneven.
Just when I was getting back into the Beach Boys, here comes Vinyl Rewind to refuel the fire.
Synchronicity, baby!
Me too bro!
Same! Hahahah
Although extremely underrated, Holland should make the top 5 of any BB list.
I think Brian Wilson’s “Smile” is addictive listening. The album is like a musical puzzle you can get lost in and the melodies stick in your head forever!
BB Loves You is a cracked synth pop masterpiece
great video
I have to check these albums
Strictly musically speaking, from around 1964 to 1974, The Beach Boys could almost do no wrong.
My personal top picks would be:
1. Sunflower
2. Friends
3. Pet Sounds
4. 20/20
5. Today
6. Surf's Up
7. Carl & The Passions
8. Summer Days (and Summer Nights)
9. Holland
10. Love You
@Jeff Celentano Finally someone who isn't afraid to commit blasphemy and rate Pet Sounds lower than #1 for a change. Well done Jeff!
Good list, Carl and the Passions is actually pretty underrated to be fair (as are most of the early '70s albums of their tenure).

Beach Boys In Concert double album is also underrated
This guy Beach Boys'.
Wait wait wait... no love for Holland??
Perhaps the Mount Vernon bonus EP dragged it's rating down?
Either way can't argue with his top 5.

To me, 'Love You' is the true sequel to Pet Sounds.

Great video, Eric. Thanks for the mention of Sherry, She Needs Me - I wasn't aware of that nugget.
No Holland! Such an amazing album.
You got my listening to The Beach Boys, and it takes a lot to sway me. Surfs up is my favorite so far
Love You was not the final album with Dennis. M.I.U, Light Album and Keeping the Summer Alive also featured him.
This is so cool, I've been waiting too long for this video to came out, Beach Boys are so great but so hard to find in good shape, thanks for this, love your work !
How do you not have Holland on this list?? After SMiLE and Pet Sounds it's a masterpiece!
I watched this and then listened to Sunflower. What an immaculate album! Better than pet sounds in my opinion.
Here it is:
10. That’s Why God Made The Radio 📻 (2012)
The group's initial album of original material in 20 years marked the Beach Boys' 50th anniversary with the return of early member David Marks for the first time since 1963. Brian Wilson wrote most of the songs and sang or shared lead on all but two. All of this leads to what amounts to a goodwill effort with just a handful of memorable songs to join the celebration.
Best Songs: The Title Track, Isn’t It Time
9. Shut Down Volume 2 (1964)
The Beach Boys released three albums in 1964, a transitional year.
Best Tracks: Fun, Fun, Fun; Pom, Pom Play Girl; Don’t Worry Baby and The Warmth of The Sun
Worst Track: The Title Track, I believe they should of retitled the album as “This Car of Mine” so it didn’t coincide with the 1963 compilation LP “Shut Down Volume 1”.
* Love Dennis Wilson’s lead vocals in “This Car of Mine”
* The cover version of Louie, Louie is way better than the original by The Kingsmen
8. Surfer Girl (1963)
Brian Wilson finally gets full producer credit on the Beach Boys' third album, which includes some great singles (the title track, "Little Deuce Coupe," "In My Room") mixed in with the usual early filler.
Best Tracks: The Title Track, In My Room, Hawaii
Okay Track: Our Car Club
* Love “Catch A Wave” and even the Jan & Dean Hit “Sidewalk Surfin’” which I also love mimics some similarities in the sound overall and both of them compliment each other really well!!
7. 20/20 (1969)
A mess of an album released during a messy period for the band, '20/20' was mostly made up of outtakes from earlier sessions, including some that dated back to 'Smile.' It didn't help that Brian Wilson was in a psychiatric hospital at the time. Still, some good songs are collected here, even if the end result is sorta all over the place.
Good Songs: Bluebirds Over The Mountain, Our Prayer and Cabinessence
Least Favorite Track: Never Learn Not To Love is too controversial because of the connection to Charles Manson
* The two best songs with Carl Wilson on lead vocals after God Only Knows are Darlin’ and I Can Hear Music
* The Greatest Track off this album 💿 with out of question is Do It Again!!
6. Friends (1968)
I will let the Vinyl Geek’s pick speak for itself but basically the band was still reeling from 'Smile' and its aftereffects when it released its 14th album, a brief peace-and-love excursion inspired by Maharishi Mahesh Yogi. Dennis Wilson co-wrote his first songs, and Brian Wilson contributed his last huge batch until 1977. But he was mostly checked out by this point anyway. This was when Carl Wilson really became the leader of the band til his lung cancer death in 1998.
Standout Song: The Title Track
5. The Beach Boys Party! Album (1965)
Don't let the "Recorded 'Live' at a Beach Boys' Party" tag line fool you.
Best Tracks: I Should’ve Known Better, Tell Me Why, You’ve Got To Hide Your Love Away (Dennis Takes Lead Vocal) and Barbara Ann + Papa Oom Wow Wow
* I really enjoy all three of their cover versions to those songs by The Beatles
* Please check out the 2015 album Uncovered and Unplugged! which remixes the original album plus an expansion of 81 songs!
* Also check out the non-album single “The Little Girl I Once Knew” which is one of my favorite songs by them and it is definitely worth listening!
4. All Summer Long (1964)
The group’s sixth album is its first truly great one.
Best Songs: I Get Around, Wendy, Little Honda, Don’t Back Down and Girls On The Beach
Least Favorite Tracks: I cannot stand listening to the goofy tunes of Drive-In and the Unnecessary Our Favorite Recording Sessions
* I believe the song “Girls On The Beach” (the title track to the film of the same name from 1965) is the sequel to “Surfer Girl”
3. Summer Days [And Summer Nights!!] (1965)
The record company wasn't happy with the Beach Boys' artistic evolution on 'Today!,' so four months later the group returned with this peace offering: a collection of old-school girl- and California-themed songs (see "California Girls"). But Brian Wilson's adult ear was still tuned to more ambitious places, so 'Summer Days (And Summer Nights!!)' comes off like teenage radio fantasies swathed in grown-up sounds. Their next proper album, 'Pet Sounds,' skipped the compromises.
Best Tracks: California Girls; Help Me, Rhonda; Amusement Parks U.S.A., Then I Kissed Her, Girl Don’t Tell Me and You’re So Good To Me
Least Favorite Song: I’m Bugged At My Ol’ Man which is a song about Murray Wilson
2. Today! (1965)
Brian Wilson's run-up to 'Pet Sounds' is a magnificent blend of orchestral pop and introspective songwriting. Inspired by Phil Spector's Wall of Sound production, as well as by the growing notion of the album as an art form, Wilson assembled 'The Beach Boys Today!' to play as a conceptual piece that flows from one emotional peak to another. A masterful achievement that signaled a bright new era.
Best Tracks: The first eleven tracks are masterpieces
Least Favorite Track: The Last One on the album titled “Bull Session With The ‘Big Daddy’”
1. [The GOAT ALBUM] Pet Sounds (1966)
Arguably the most gorgeous pop record ever made and certainly one of the greatest albums ever conceived.
That is quality, I'm going to copy and paste for future reference, cheers!

Beach Boys "Today thru about "Holland" are all great! My favorites are "Friends ", "20/20" "Sunflower" & "Wild Honey". Carl & The Passions" ain't bad either and of course "Pet Sounds!
I find Smiley Smile really uncomfortable to listen to. To me, the songs on Smiley compared to the versions on the Smile Sessions are the sound of defeat and depression, particularly Wind Chimes. It makes me feel so sad for Brian.
