    Matt, I enthusiastically agree with you about the quality of "Sail On, Sailor." Many years ago, I was half-listening to a feed from Pandora and the song came on. I was smitten by it. I thought, "Who the hell is that?" I was stunned to see "Beach Boys" on the display. At first, I thought it might be an error, but as I listened to the backing harmonies, I knew it was them. Thanks for noting the song. It has to be in BB's top 5 as far as I'm concerned.

    I'm a big defender of 'Sunflower', 'So Tough' & 'Holland'. 'So Tough' is one of my favorite seventies albums ever. The recording technique on these three releases is innovative - a lot of the parts are recorded and mixed binaurally, not mono instruments panned left-or-right, so on a good stereo system the different elements will move forward or backward in 3D space within the whole stereo picture. "Marcella" is terrific on headphones.

      I'm with you regarding the three LPs you list, although Holland is my favorite of the bunch. I didn't notice if Matt ever mentions it, he seems more focused on chart-positions this time around, but "The Trader" is my favorite song by Carl, it fits with the California central coast theme that peppers the album. And even though it interferes with the album flow, even the recitation of Robinson Jeffers' 'Beaks of Eagles' works for me sometimes.

    Thanks for the series, Matt. Great job and detail on the music. Having grown up in the era, The Beach Boys just sort of became increasingly uncool. The pop culture kept chasing that next new shiny act. By 1974 I was playing Endless Summer endlessly in my bedroom but telling nobody at HS that I was a fan. Their band name worked against them, too, almost as bad as calling themselves the Smiling Clowns. Inevitably, they went commercial with it all. The bummer about their legacy is that they made a lot of great songs that were overlooked in the latter stage of their recording heyday.

    Excellent as ever, Matt. The Beach Boys' story easily deserves 6 episodes, maybe more! One thing to add is that finally we did get to hear 'Smile', first of all Brian's solo version in 2004 and then in 2011 an album compiled from the Beach Boys' original music. Of course we'll never know for sure what form the album would have taken if completed in '67, but given the high quality of these recordings it's perhaps surprising that Brian and the boys couldn't finish it back then. On the other hand, given the shambolic lifestyles that you describe so well, maybe it's not surprising after all!

    An insight into how dark "Sail On, Sailor" was as originally envisioned can be heard on KGB's version of the song (a mid 70's supergroup featuring Carmine Appice, Mike Bloomfield, Ric Grech and others). Ray Kennedy was lead vocalist--and (presumably) it's his version of the lyrics he sings
    Also--kinda surprised you skipped the 1985 album, as it was their last gasp at relevance, and the 2013's That's Why God Made The Radio, which was a nice return to form for Brian and the band

    I recall from Brian Wilson's book "Wouldn't It Be Nice" that he had nothing to do with "Kokomo." He was in Los Angeles working on a solo album while the band recorded the song in Atlanta; he was given a cursory 24-hour notice of the session as required in their agreements. Just another example of how dysfunctional and immature these guys continued to be. It truly is amazing that they've created such memorable music over the years. Elsewhere on RUclips, you can watch their 1980s cover of "California Dreaming" with the often overlooked Al Jardine singing lead. I think it holds up as well as the Mamas & Papas original.

    • @popgoesthe60s52
      @popgoesthe60s52  8 месяцев назад

      Actually, the real story regarding Kokomo is that Landy didn't forward calls from the band to Wilson. The band wanted Brian's participation but Landy handled all of Wilson's calls (calls from his mother were also not put through). Landy instead responded to the band the Landy get and Executive Producer credit on the record and some publishing with the band refused. Producer of record, Terry Melcher, wanted no part of Landy in the studio. The book you cite, Brian has disavowed as much is untrue and Landy was heavily involved in its writing. So this is not an issue of immaturity or dysfunction on the bands part. Only Landy's.

    Great episode Matt, been looking fwd to the final of this series. The BB have a bizarre and tragic history. So many "coulda beens" with this band. Given the clash of personalities, Brian's mental and drug abuse issues, and generally poor decision making, it's inarguable that this band failed to live up to their potential. After 1967 they lost relevance and ended up among the first nostalgia acts.

    Excellent series, Thank You. The Beach Boys weren't a top group for my generation in HS in the early to mid 70's other than Endless Summer. Even after that, they didn't do much. Rock & Roll Music is the only top 40 song I can think of. I don't remember many of the album covers you showed from the late 70's to early 80's.
    Endless Summer was big at parties. I felt Spirit of America was a relative unknown, maybe it was more for the generation that grew up with the surf songs. Your series showed me what they were putting out in my HS years and beyond. Not the stuff we listened to, Wings, Eagles, Skynyrd, Led Zep, etc.
    I knew Dennis had a drug problem, he died after I saw them in the early 80's. Shocking how bad Brian was. Overall, a very sad R & R story. Thanks Again

    The Beach Boys also appeared in the late '80s as themselves on an episode of "Full House." I think Mike Love appeared in another episode or two. They also were inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in 1988 in the same ceremony as the Beatles and the Rolling Stones and Mike Love attacked Paul (who didn't show up), albeit, it was probably meant probably playfully.

      I dispute that summary. "Life support" if you judge strictly by record sales, maybe. The final Capitol LPs were not big sellers, and neither was Sunflower. But all of them were artistic successes, especially Sunflower -- maybe their best LP overall, EVER. Surf's Up and Holland were both artistic and commercial successes. After that, they became an oldies band, essentially.

The 'Light Album' did produce the wondrous 'Lady Lynda', which was the band's first top 10 hit in the UK since 1970, but overall you left no stone unturned in the turbulent soap opera that is The Beach Boys. Thank you Matt, for doing this series on the Beach Boys! That being said, sort of feel you rushed through the group's past 50 years, especially their past 40, which you summarized with just a few sentences at the end. Agree that the So Tough album sounds disjointed, not running well together. For many years, thought it was their worst album (But no longer think this). Have always enjoyed the quirkiness of the Love You album. In a way, with the heavy use of synthesizers on the tracks, Brian was ahead of the sounds popular in 1977. Thinking of Gary Numan's hit song "Cars" from 1979 (which was almost all synthesizers). It's easy to say this with hindsight, but overall, the band always relied too much on Brian (in terms of songwriting and producing). He should have gotten help much earlier (in the late'60s). The group (Think also a major mistake on their part) always put family above everything else. There were others (People such as Lou Adler, "Bones" Howe, or Terry Melcher) who they could have approached about producing them, taking that weight off Brian's shoulders. The others also became good songwriters, so the burden of writing hit songs shouldn't have been solely on Brian. They could have also approached professional songwriters (But that would have been a big hit to their collective egos). Over the years, think their management/who was managing them, as well as their record labels, share the blame in how the group's career went. But the biggest fault lies with themselves. Technically, the group is still going, with Mike and Bruce and a bunch of younger back up musicians, calling themselves the Beach Boys. Agree with you that many times the group acted like children. To their credit, think they were the only Surf group from the early '60s to have a career past the mid to late '60s. But how successful they were has been and is debatable.

    • @popgoesthe60s52
      @popgoesthe60s52  8 месяцев назад +1

      Hey Robert, thanks for watching the series. It is really amazing this group lasted past 1972. I attribute that to being "family". Just about every other 60s band was done by then with the exception of a few, who kept up with times and their music was relevant to a wider audiences (Stones, Who, Dead, Kinks). I think they left quite a legacy of music but is only appreciated by niche audiences today. I plan on a couple more videos that will go into this idea further so stay tuned!

    Fantastic series. I've read a few Beach Boys bios, but still picked up a few new footnotes from this series. They're a bit like a rock group version of Johnny Cash, a walking contradiction. On one hand, individually they're all amicable good dudes capable of being generous and warm hearted. On the other hand, they each have a bit of asshole to them. It's a popular debate, but imo the Beach Boys are Brian Wilson. The other four capable songwriters, especially Dennis, but their output doesn't have that addictive stick to your brain attraction that Brian's writing and production has. Glad they got a final curtain bow with That's Why God Made the Radio and the 50th tour. True to form, even that was embroiled in controversy and problems.

    Great job! Your 2 years were well worth it! I've been a lifelong fan (since 1964) and I think the reason Mikey gets so much fan dislike is -- his ATTITUDE. All you have to do is go back and watch his "comment" at the 1988 RnR HOF induction. He is a JERK. He relentlessly hassled Brian over creative directions their whole career, even before Pet Sounds. It seemed at one point, Brian was simultaneously contending against Murry, Capitol AND Mikey for creative direction.
    ML was undeniably insanely jealous of Tony Asher and Van Dyke Parks. Plus, he is great at constantly "re-writing" history. (Yes, I bought and read his book.) It's true Brian was weak-willed with drugs, and didn't want to battle Mikey and others over their differences. A huge improvement in his life came when he met Melinda Ledbetter.
    You might be tired of delving into the "Beach Boy world," but maybe should think about doing a Part 7: "Brian Wilson's Solo Career." Maybe also a personal review of the movie "Love and Mercy." Maybe a look at the "Smile" album (either version).Thanks for your series!

      Hey Bill! I have a couple more reviews I would like to do on the Pet Sounds-Smile era. As for Mike, regardless of what you think of him personally, his contributions are routinely undermined by fans (and some senior writers) who insist on blaming Love for Brian's downfall. That is giving Love way too much credit.
      I always challenge fans to rethink their use ad hominems to describe Love like "jerk", "relentlessly hassled", "insanely jealous", "re-writing history" or even referring to him as "Mikey." Having done so much research on the band, I was very surprised and disappointed to see the level of bias that gets in the way of the actual history. I may take some of the writers in question to task, which would demonstrate my points more clearly. I do have a writer (and Beach Boy fan) scheduled as a guest just to talk in general about the band so we may broach that subject.
      Mike Love does have a bad reputation and a great deal of that reputation lies with Mike Love. As always, I appreciate the dialog, Bill!

      @@popgoesthe60s52 My rhetoric may have gotten a little heated, but seriously, ML's meltdown on one of the biggest stages in his life (1988) was troubling, deeply revealing, and makes a joke of all his "TM" preaching, at least to me.
      FACT: Because of ML, Brother Records lost out on a big pile of cash when he forced BW to part ways with producing "Redwood," which shifted gears & became Three Dog Night.
      I won't deny that I enjoy hearing ML's voice on many, many classic BB records, but I think his role in the BBs, at least pre-"BBs, Inc.", is HUGELY overrated. Touring band director? OK. But song composition, contributions to the albums post-"Love You" ? Nothing much. You might dig a little deeper into Mike's "bad reputation" -- where did it come from? And why does he have that rep in the first place? And why BW stays away from him.

    It's fitting that this final part covers what is now close to 52 years of activity, and yet has such a small musical footprint representing their legacy. It shows that drugs don't exactly promote creativity and growth. Never knew how poor of a decision it was to record in Amsterdam for the Holland album. I always figured they were making a smart move with the strong Sail On Sailor giving them credibility. What a fiasco! I remember reading about Keeping The Summer Alive (I think it was that one) being an all digital recording utilizing the new-at-the-time techniques of sequencing and early Pro Tools. I thought to myself this is not how it should be done when thinking of their classic hits. I would have liked you to have wrapped it up with more attention to their 50th Anniversary and the recording of That's Why God Made The Radio, or even a bit more background on how Kokomo came together. Those were shining moments after so many years of losses, suffering and poor business decisions.
