when you are "mentally", and physically abused from a young age, it robs you of your childhood innocence. You grow up faster and with a "childs eyes", start to see the world through a more advanced "adults eyes". Whether you want to or not, you are forced through trauma to "grow up" faster, and because you are no longer innocent, you are made fully aware, and more mature. When ever I see a child that seems to mature for his age, I always wonder why. Is abuse always the reason for this? In my early teens the Beach Boys gained rapid popularity. From then through now, there have been many, many great artists of all genres. I can comfortably say the Beach Boys are my number 1 favorite. Short note. It took several years for my maturity level to appreciate God Only Knows. It was just so different from their "beach, girls, cars" songs. It ultimately became one of my all-time favorites. Carl Wilson was phenomenal and as many have stated, I too find him to be the soul of the Beach Boys. Probably my favorite performance of God Only Knows is from the "Beach Boys historic concert at Knebworth House on June 21st 1980." Perhaps the happiest and most relaxed I have ever seen them. Thank you Beach Boys for having made my life better.

I was particularly TAKEN WITH BRIAN - the others always deferred to him - Even tho he was obviously the LEADER of the group - I just sensed HE WAS SO ALONE. I didn't know ANYTHING about his home life - his dad ANY OF IT - but it kinda makes sense - he was the OLDEST and I think he was trying to PROTECT his younger brothers. I'm 79 now - I've followed Brian over the years - his staying in bed for years, his gaining weight - etc. but as time goes on I think he's become more RESTORED to himself - O god, I just remembered that CONTROLLING KREEP of a "personal manager" - for years he MANIPULATED him almost to destruction. - BUT Brian ESCAPED, saved himself - RESTORED himself and now has a BETTER LIFE - GOD BLESS YOU AND KEEP YOU BRIAN!

Whether you want to or not, you are forced through trauma to "grow up" faster, and because you are no longer innocent, you are made fully aware, and more mature. When ever I see a child that seems to mature for his age, I always wonder why. Is abuse always the reason for this? No, of course not, but I think more than not, "in some shape or form", there is an underlying reason. In my own opinion of course.

I love how the Beatles instantly recognized the musical genius of Brian Wilson the first time they heard the Beach Boys.
It was pretty much just Paul. Lennon was too arrogant and to go was probably my high. Not sure where George stood but I’ve never heard of his commenting about Brian.
@@Frankie5Angels150 For what it's worth, John expressed appreciation for "Little Girl I Once Knew" and George noted on the Beatles Anthology that they were competing with the Beach Boys around 1966. But yes, I agree it's largely Paul who had the appreciation and judged the band on its merits as opposed to commercial success (e.g. recognizing Pet Sounds for being so musically innovative despite it not being a big seller at the time). I can also see Ringo being appreciative but just not as vocal.
@@Frankie5Angels150 George liked Brian that's why Brian sang at the concert for George.

Mental illness is no joke. These folks truly suffer, and for others to take advantage of that is just monstrous. Damn.
When he finally performed Smile live in 2004, it was beautiful to see that energy and fulfillment. It's on youtube.
Supposed to be released when? 1967-68? Brian's mental illness was debilitating.

@@johannarenfro2568 - Please keep in mind that Mike Love and Gary Usher wrote many of the lyrics that made the Beach Boys a great group. Brian's greatest talent was his skill in the recording studio.

Should be noted that Mike Love wanted/demanded that Brian not fulfill his imaginative aural creativity and totally focus on ONLY cranking out the same beach and car songs.
Once for Brian’s birthday, Mike Love and others gave him multiple 20lb boxes of See’s Candy - odd gift to somebody they knew had a big weight problem
Isn’t it “interesting” that The Beach Boys released “Kokomo” (that didn’t have Brian involved at all) at the same time Brian’s “Love and Mercy” was released. Any guesses on which song is best and which song sold the most - lol!
@@jefflee674 - You seem to be referring to the rumor that Mike Love hated the Pet Sounds LP and told Brian, "Don't f**k with the formula." Love absolutely denied saying any such thing and said he thought the LP was great even though his input was minimal in creating it. Kokomo was a hit. Probably sold better than Love and Mercy but I can't remember that one.
So I'm not prepared to say which song is "better." "Disco Duck" was a number one hit for Rick Dees in 1976 but that does not make it a great song.

The mind is really such a precious and delicate thing. We were so wreckless with it in the 1960s -1970s...and had some of the worst parents which drove us to self abuses.
USA's "greatest generation" did not do a good job raising their "baby boomers". Somehow, we survived.
Always loved Beach Boys songs but only looked at their history this summer. Wow did life turn around for this musician!
Let’s not forget The Wrecking Crew.
Brian used them only because he had trouble getting the rest of the BB's to work. They had lives, and money. It was hard to get them to show up to work. So he hired professionals who were at work every day.
I've always seen Brian Wilson as a musical genius. He has composed some of the most phenomenal music. I love the many layers of sound he uses to produce some of the richest music you'll ever hear. My memories of some of the best times of my life are set to the music of the Beach Boys...God Bless them all and my thanks to them.
Soundtrack of my youth 🎼 🖤
BW was 100% MPD, so we, or even HE will never know which 'alter' wrote that music.
That was the last tour that had all six Beach Boys on stage at the same time.
Music has never been the same! Nobody will ever come close to their sound. I honestly don't listen to anything from the last 3 decades! ✌❤
That's really sad. There is lots of great music out there. You have to make a point of trying out new music because there's always some band that will grow on you. Most of my music listening is The Beach Boys and The Beatles however I listen to other stuff and enjoy it also lots of classical music that is incredible.
got an album, my first ever of theirs when I was 13 in 1973 in the UK - 63 now in 2022 and can fully appreciate the genius - lived in Redondo Beach three times "Surfin Safari" - my fav music - The Beach Boys, great great melodies....
Carl seemed to be the most down to earth laid back one of the bunch. He was also the most gifted musically. 😢 😮
Woah it was cool hearing Carl's part of the harmony at the end
I was 16 years old in '66 and a junior in high school when Pet Sounds came out. 'Wouldn't It Be Nice?' was the theme song for me and my girl that summer. But for me alone, The Lovin' Spoonful's, 'Summer In The City,' was the hottest sound of the summer!
For nostalgic reasons, here are the top15 National Charts songs of July '66:
1. HANKY PANKY - Tommy James & The Shondells (Roulette)
2. STRANGERS IN THE NIGHT - Frank Sinatra (Reprise)
3. LIL' RED RIDING HOOD - Sam The Sham & The Pharaohs (MGM)
4. PAPERBACK WRITER - The Beatles (Capitol)
5. WILD THING - The Troggs (Atco / Fontana)
6. RED RUBBER BALL - The Cyrkle (Columbia)
7. YOU DON'T HAVE TO SAY YOU LOVE ME - Dusty Springfield (Philips)
8. PAINT IT, BLACK - The Rolling Stones (London)
9. THE PIED PIPER - Crispian St. Peters (Jamie)
10. SUMMER IN THE CITY - The Lovin' Spoonful (Kama Sutra)
11. SWEET PEA - Tommy Roe (ABC)
12. COOL JERK - The Capitols (Karen)
13. I AM A ROCK - Simon & Garfunkel (Columbia)
14. MOTHER'S LITTLE HELPER - The Rolling Stones (London)
15. SUNNY - Bobby Hebb (Philips)
@meta, I was 13 in 1966, but my older bro who was 16 introduced me to his older friends which I learned from! The 60s had the BEST music, best cars, and best sports teams! Even tho I grew up abused by a drunken psycho father, it was a good time to be young!
"My dad smacked me one time when he was disciplining me -- HE HIT ME WITH A 2 x 4 - BUT I was ALREADY DEAF - NO no no no - I WAS BORN DEAF!" I met them once, on tour in NOVA SCOTIA I was very young - didn't know much about life. They were ALL BRILLIANT - each in his own way and their BROTHERHOOD was one of their strongest points..
Love you Brian .. u r the Beach Boy.. ❤️❤️🥰

The movie "Love and Mercy" tells his story of the abuse that he suffered under the legal care if his quack of a psychologist. Such a good movie. If you think that Brian Wilson is a musical genius watch it. ❤

Brian is deaf in one of his ears thanks to his Dear Old Dad who used his head for a punching bag. Murray Wilson had an evil mean streak in him. He wore a pair of horns. Even though he hid them well they were there.

The "Today" album was great on so many levels. Brian was really soaring in his talent, this album came out during the hit making years (and qualitative album output). Their harmonies were perfect. Brian was also ably assisted by the group of great studio musicians known as "The Wrecking Crew" at this time.

Hello Barbara 👋
Brian is in the same class of writer as Lennon/McCartney! Great is great and that's what Brian is/was!
I think Brian was the lone genius of his creations, whereas Lennon and McCartney worked together plus had input from George Martin.
@@notbraindead7298 I get your point, but Lennon and McCartney did write their own songs (really complex too! Songs like It Won't Be Long, Girl, and I'm Only Sleeping by John and All My Loving, Michelle, and Penny Lane). So it's not like they were completely dependent on each other.
That section about their father was shocking. Showing how much of a manipulative bastard he was. The title of genius is one that is bestowed by others not by yourself. To state that "I'm a genius too" shows that you really aren't.
Absolutely Brilliant…
I'm of Brian's generation and I sit in my studio playing and listening to music, I go back to those I grew up with .. Brian was a real talented guy, the music of today is almost dead in comparison...
In 1965, Brian reminded me of Alan Ruck from Ferris Buellers Day Off
Surfer Girl was inspired! It was a transcendent gift. It just presented itself to him unbeckoned and unannounced.
Brian actually said that the Disney song, "when you wish upon a star" inspired him to write "Surfer girl".

Brian sang and sings about things he felt and feels and wrote about things he felt and feels. He feels those things so intensely, it seems to me, that it's like when I'm swimming underwater. I can't get away from being surrounded by water, while I'm in it. Imagine not being able to get out of the water. I never met the Wilsons and it still makes me sad that Dennis and Carl are gone. Sad for their families and sad especially for Brian.

Oh Boy you girls! Really dig him can't blame you he really was a cool guy 😎
It’s a copy of Wish upon a Star by Dion and the Belmonts, that’s what he was unconsciously singing to himself and thought it was a new song.
I’ve got a synopsis for you here goes: Dennis Wilson, the Wilson brother with awful judgement who took in Charles Manson & many of his family members then later regretted it becoming scared shitless of Manson. The brother who lets be honest couldn’t sing and who’s drumming wasn’t used in beach boys session recordings.
But on a positive note he was the most handsome of the Wilson brothers and the likely reason you even think of him if you were to be frank.
No Suzanne I’m not jealous of dead men so save that as your comeback think of something more clever.

I just see Dennis as a very forgettable person and it’s silly to suggest otherwise. The solo singing segments Dennis had in live concerts were heavy cringe. He’s one of the worst singers I’ve ever heard.
