Carl Wilson Life Story (1946 - 1998) The Beach Boys Lead Guitarist Carl Wilson is one of the most-loved and much-missed vocalists and musicians of his generation, whose glorious voice and authoritative guitar graced scores of great recordings. His premature death at just 51, on February 6, 1998, robbed us of many more years of his fine work. Carl Dean Wilson was an American rock and roll singer and guitarist, best known as a founding member, lead guitarist and sometime lead vocalist of The Beach Boys. He was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1988. Wilson played the Chuck Berry-esque guitar parts on many of the band’s early hits. Because the band first became successful when he was in his teens, he was still developing as a musician and singer. His lead vocals in the band’s first three years included “Summertime Blues” (duet with David Marks), “Louie, Louie” (splitting the lead with Mike Love), “Pom Pom Play Girl,” “All Dressed Up for School”, and “Girl Don’t Tell Me”. When the band started being augmented or replaced by session musicians on many of their mid-’60s recordings (they contributed the majority of the instrumental work themselves on the early-’60s recordings), unlike the other members of the band Carl often played side by side in the studio with the session pros that Brian increasingly turned to from 1964 onward, or recorded his guitar leads during the Beach Boys vocal sessions, with his guitar plugged directly into the soundboard. ▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬ Subscribe To The Remember This RUclips Channel Here ► geni.us/RememberThisChannel ▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬ 💥 History and Nostalgia Channel (20th Century History Documentaries)💥 Welcome to the Remember This RUclips History and Nostalgia Channel where we discuss thought provoking subject matter from recent the recent past to modern day... get ready for 20th Century History Documentaries content on all things from conspiracy theories to real events and how they shaped our lives. I had the good fortune to see The Beach Boys live in 1995. Carl was always being overshadowed by Mike Love, but his lead vocals on "Good Vibrations" and "God Only Knows" were downright angelic. It wasn't until he died that people realized that he was the glue holding the group together.
Carl probably didn't mind Mike taking the attention. When Carl had a brief solo career in the early 80s, he said he gained more respect for Mike's roll as front man. Carl wasn't comfortable in that position.
@@truthtransistorradio6716That’s because Carl was an introvert, and Mike is the epitome of an _extrovert._ Mike loves to put himself out there and ham it up. Carl preferred to hang back and express himself through his guitar playing, and sing the occasional lead. Without a doubt Carl had the best voice of any of the Beach Boys, and sang lead on some of their finest songs, but he wasn’t exactly aching to get up on the mic. That was very much Mike’s thing.
Carl Wilson faced several personal and professional challenges during his career, including drug addiction and legal battles, but he continued to persevere and create music that touched the hearts of millions.
He had much trouble with the selective Service (Draft Board), by refusing to be drafted, & claiming he was a Conscientious Objector. He offered his services (along w/the Beach Boy Band), to play music for the troops, in lieu of any military service. It was denied by the Draft Board... :(
Carl has always been my favorite Beach Boy. The songs that are my favorite are "Heaven" and "I Can Hear Music". I loved his voice. The world lost a fantastic vocalist and musician. R.I.P. Carl 💕
Yes, it seemed that Carl was the spiritual glue that kept them functioning through all their challenges of those times. It tough being the kings of that time but to me, they still have it over every and any group then and since then. Who harmonize both the voices and instruments like Brian's group, the Beach Boys!
Carl's voice was the magic glue behind the Beach Boys iconic sound. Back in 1998 without social media most fans had no idea he was sick. I just remember turning on my computer and getting an email that he had passed...I was blindsided. I met Carl back in the early 80s and out of all the Beach Boys he seemed to go out of his way to make sure it was a memorable experience for a fan. RIP sweet Carl.
It completely caught me off guard as well. I’ll never forget that moment. I was in Austin, TX at a Jiffy Lube waiting on an oil change, and the news was announced on the little waiting room TV. My jaw just hit the floor. Felt like getting sucker punched in the gut. I think it was like that for most fans. Like you said, no social media in those days. I had _zero_ prior knowledge that he was even ill. That was a rough one.

I’ll never forget the moment when I first got the news that Carl had passed. I was in Austin TX, sitting in the tiny little waiting area at a Jiffy Lube, waiting on an oil change. There was a little TV mounted up in the corner and the announcement came in on the news that Carl Wilson had lost his battle with cancer. I didn’t even know he had cancer, or that he was ill in any way. My jaw just hit the floor. It was as if someone had suckerpunched me in the gut. I’ve been a huge Beach Boys fan my entire life, and the news completely caught me off guard. That was a rough day.
Each one of the Wilson brothers was cool in their own way. Brian was the crazy genius. Dennis the bad boy and Carl was so cool he seemed to be unfazed by anything.
Carl was my favorite with that snappy surf guitar and angelic voice! I Can Hear Music and God Only Knows are two of their best songs on a very long list of great songs, perhaps 60+ really good hits. Loved them in the early and mid 60's and never get bored with the best group ever. Nobody has accomplished what Brian Wilson amassed and he is truly the behind the scenes genius, taking the group way past what any other group ever could. Nobody can match the vocals and instrumental sounds like the Beach Boys. Lets not forget Alan Jardine who also got better to be invaluable to the group.
The first time I saw a video of Carl singing Darlin,’ it floored me! I had been thinking of him as the chubby teenager all those years, yet here was this knockout handsome rock star singing a fantastic song that I’d never heard, who instantly became my favorite Beach Boy, and who stirred my heart. It’s so sad that his gift as a singer, songwriter and musician is no more. I’m so glad that I got to see Carl perform in those later years. He truly was sensational.
Carl Wilson's story is a testament to the power of music to transcend boundaries and bring people together, and his contribution to the music industry will always be remembered and celebrated.
Carl was the most serious musician in The Beach Boys. I’ve heard many musician who played with the group say that they took compliments from the group with a grain of salt, but if you got a compliment or even constructive criticism from Carl, THAT was something special.
Carl was such a beautiful person. I had the pleasure to meet him in the early 80's and a few more times in that period of time to speak to him. He was a kind, gentle soul. That was how most people who knew him personally described him often. All of his work is my favorite. I could not pick one over another. He was already a seasoned professional by the time of his unfortunate passing. Carl, RIP.

@@robertzastrow4648 I have often thought that. Paul has never mentioned Carl's vocal on God Only Knows, which, to me, is tremendous. Neither did George Martin in that video where he visits Brian in the studio and remixes the song. That bugs me.

Carl did The Beach Boys tour the last summer of his life, never missing a show even if he was traveling via ambulance. When I saw The Beach Boys perform at halftime during the Superbowl and he was conspicuously absent, I knew he was dying.
@@HistoryandNostalgiaChannelfor those who fell in love with the BB in the 80's, it would be incredible for someone to do an indepth biography about Carl! Clips of performances and interviews. More about his family and all times with the brothers.
My favorite Carl Wilson song would have to be "If I Could Talk To Love" from his Solo Album "Youngblood"; followed closely by his lead on "God Only Knows"- that song is sheer perfection!
my favorites are Wouldnt it be Nice ,God Only Knows,I can Hear Music, and his solo pieces Hold Me and Heaven and the song not really Known called I wish for you written near his death
IMO, Carl never got the credit he deserved as a lead guitarist. For example, his intro and ending on Johnny B Goode in the Beach Boys Concert album 1964... he really gave that Fender Jaguar a workout on that song. I always wondered if he played the guitar instrumentals himself on the Surfin' USA album, or if was a session guitarist. Also, who played the lead guitar solo in the middle break of I Get Around. So Sad he passed away at such a young age.
As talented as he was, he was actually underused and his talent suppressed by staying in the group instead of going solo or joining Dennis to form another band during the 70’s. He was easily the 2nd most important member of the group.
David Marks never sung on the Beach Boys song when he was in the band. The other vocal on the Beach Boys cover of Summertime Blues was Nick Venet ( producer for Capitol Records and the person who signed them). Also All Dressed Up for School was not released at the time, and only came out as a bonus track in the late 80's. On a side notes, I'd love to know more about the new age religion Carl subscribed too

To answer your question, Long Promised Road is my favourite. Thanks for the post.

Carl inspired me to take up the guitar. Dennis influenced my brother on drums. 😎
RIP Carl & Dennis Wilson
"Wild Honey" has a special place in my heart.
Yes, lovely song indeed. RIP Carl Wilson
Carl did The Beach Boys tour the last summer of his life, never missing a show even if he was traveling via ambulance. When I saw The Beach Boys perform at halftime during the Superbowl and he was conspicuously absent, I knew he was dying.
RIP Carl Wilson
@@HistoryandNostalgiaChannelfor those who fell in love with the BB in the 80's, it would be incredible for someone to do an indepth biography about Carl! Clips of performances and interviews. More about his family and all times with the brothers.
A great singer and musician and I also respect him for being a being a conscientious objector during the Viet Nam war.
RIP Carl Wilson 🙏
My favorite Carl Wilson song would have to be "If I Could Talk To Love" from his Solo Album "Youngblood"; followed closely by his lead on "God Only Knows"- that song is sheer perfection!

DARLIN & WILD HONEY
veeerrrrry best of beach boys EVER.
Yes, two great choices there... RIP Carl Wilson
RIP Carl Wilson
I've always regarded Carl Wilson as the Eric Clapton of the Beach Boys! 😢 😮

RIP Carl Wilson
I can't listen to Beautiful songs like Good Vibrations or God Only Knows or Kokomo now because it's missing Carl's voice
RIP Carl Wilson
As talented as he was, he was actually underused and his talent suppressed by staying in the group instead of going solo or joining Dennis to form another band during the 70’s. He was easily the 2nd most important member of the group.
RiP Carl Wilson
Yes, I used to think he and Dennis should have split off and form a Wilson Bros Band.
I Can Hear Music

I think that darling is a great number xxx
RIP Carl Wilson 🙏
Despite being born into a musical family, Carl Wilson had to work hard to hone his skills and emerge as a premier guitarist in the 1960s.
RIP Carl Wilson
David Marks never sung on the Beach Boys song when he was in the band. The other vocal on the Beach Boys cover of Summertime Blues was Nick Venet ( producer for Capitol Records and the person who signed them). Also All Dressed Up for School was not released at the time, and only came out as a bonus track in the late 80's.
On a side notes, I'd love to know more about the new age religion Carl subscribed too
RIP Carl Wilson
Me too! I have tried to find out more.
God Only Knows
Epic song sung beautifully by Carl. RIP Carl Wilson
The Great Carl was "the beach boys"

Carl would have put Mike down
RIP Carl Wilson
A bit overrated, like Pet Sounds. But, a fine performer and by all accounts, a decent man.
I wouldn't have minded having a voice like Carl's. If that's what overrated looks like, I'll take it. RIP Carl Wilson
God only knows
