Born and raised in NYC, came to LA 4.5 years ago. i like both for different reasons. LA is much slower paced than NYC and it is a good place to work on yourself, less distractions.

Two different cities two different vibes!!!! At the end of it all, it’s about preferences. Been to both but I prefer NYC just because of how diverse and so much to do! It’s true, NYC is definitely a place to switch up your life. I love my change of weather and having a great transportation means you have access to other parts areas in the city. If I want to escape the city, I can take Metro North to head to the Blue Mountain, Long Island Railroad to the Hamptons or NJ Transit to head to the Jersey Shore. I love the LA chill vibe but I feel can get expensive especially YOU HAVE to own a car. Only thing I give it to LA is the rent.

People talk about the weather in LA, and it is nice. However, what you have to understand is NYers love the change of seasons. It is more invigorating to see the nature cycle at work. Sure, we grumble 😂 about the ❄ in winter or 🔥 in summer, but the changes make you appreciate the differences, more so than just pretty much the same all year round. As far as outdoors, go about an hour outside the city and you have some of the most beautiful natural environments in the country. Thanks for showing that in this video.
Plenty of wildlife and not just outside the city. 🐻 walk through neighborhoods and turn over garbage cans. Raccoons in parks in all 5 boroughs. Wolves are seen in suburban areas of the city. 🦌 also.
The only thing we are missing are big cats. Mountain lions are extinct in the Northeast, so they say.

Both cities have a lot of pros and cons but overall, I think LA is better for the reasons you listed. I actually saw this video recommended while watching a video about influencers moving to NYC. I'm sure they'll have a blast at first with so much to see but I can't imagine many deciding they rather stay in NYC long term once the negatives really start to sink in. Maybe in a year or two there will be a bunch of "I moved back to LA ya'll" videos. I've only lived in NYC so far. It is a super busy, vibrant city, but at the same time it can be a pain in the ass to get from Brooklyn into Manhattan. Some days my commute to work would take 90 minutes because my bus would be late or too full to get on (and by that I mean that people were literally standing in the door by the driver) or the train was late or too full to get on. I loved being able to take the subway to the beach or the park or take the LIRR or Metro North out of the city. I didn't like the trash all over the place because trash cans aren't used and the weather is terrible. It is super hot and humid in the summer with hurricanes and super cold in the winter with blizzards.

I can only speak as a foreign tourist, from a regular visitor point of view, but when coming from another continent with big American dream concepts in mind, the biggest difference is that NYC does deliver in the fascinating destination category, whereas LA doesn't live up to its glitz and glamour image in reality. It's quite sad, but I believe LA demands to know exactly where to go and maybe even belong to certain circles to make the most of it, whereas NYC is stunningly impressive from the first glimpse out the window of any transportation from the airport. The macro view of LA is beautiful too, but up close, most of LA could well be any other American city or rather suburb. NYC is impressive and unmistakably unique from nearly any angle, whereas the charm of LA is more in its atmosphere and is not necessarily obvious at first.

Of course the transportation there is not as good as NYC but many people make it in LA without a car. If this was 30 years ago then I would agree with your comment 100%. But since then transit has gotten a lot better and its way easier to navigate the city without a car. @@Stevenimich I dont think you're reading what im saying...i mentioned that I HAVE BEEN TO LA many times before and have stood in the city for months at a time. Im speaking from my own experiences, having been there MANY times... I have navigated using their subways and rail lines plenty of times with no issues and got to my destinations just fine. Its true that their transit is not as great as NYC but its certainly very doable and continues to expand and improve as we speak.. When I was there back in September, I went to the beach a bunch of times and used the Blue Line to get from Down town LA to Long beach and it wasnt bad at all..I've also traveled to other areas such as Korea town, Hollywood, etc etc. Have not yet used the rail line to go to Santa Monica pier YET but i heard they recently build a station there too. Not a whole lot of transit options but plenty enough where a car is not always necessary. I agree about the buses..they suck. I have avoided using them unless I was making short trips. They sit in the same traffic that one would sit in if they owned car.. One reason why owning a car there is a nightmare.. The traffic is usually bumper to bumper, then you have insurance payments you have to worry about, parking fees and high gas prices to pay. Not worth it. Using public is cheaper and in my opinion, better...
Also, an old friend of mine moved out there back in 2016 and he also has never owned a car and he also gets around the city just fine using transit. So unless my friend is lying about this, (WHICH I KNOW HES NOT BECAUSE I ALSO NAVIGATED THROUGH THE CITY WITH NO CAR) you're giving false info....Also, just because one doesnt live there doesnt mean they dont know the city. So your OUTSIDER comment makes me think that I hurt your youtube feelings... Im sorry, please dont call the youtube police on me
One thing that I will give you is that using public transit there is challenging because it will literally take you a while to get to a lot of places. Even going to the mall is challenging and takes a long time but its certainly doable. Personally, i dont mind it... And again, LA is improving that by expanding their train system and building more stations. It still needs work but its getting there. But none the less, many people make it in the city without a car. Now, if you're a person who likes to go to different places all the time and see the attractions the city has to offer, then yes, a car would be the best way to go. But if you dont travel too much to different places and your life is just simply to work and go home and occasionally go out, then a car is not needed. It all boils down to what area of the city you live and work in, as well as your lifestyle. LA is a huge city and anyone choosing not having a car has to pick the right area to live and work in. Having a car there will make your life easier but it is not "NEEDED"..So try again..snowflake

It's VERY important to note that being at different stages of life can make one place more enjoyable over another.
Living in LA I personally never lacked for nightlife or entertainment--in fact I strongly believe LA does entertainment a bit better than NYC. LA not only has a variety of world class museums, theater, concerts, opera, the Queen Mary, and the Philharmonic--it also has theme parks like Disneyland nearby! Nightlife I think NYC probably just barely edges out LA--in certain areas, but not all.
However as a college student, I might prefer to live in NYC, and wouldn't mind living in an apartment in a happening area or up and coming area.
If middle aged, and looking to buy a house is where it gets tricky. While rents are more expensive in NYC metro, housing prices as in a mortgage is needed, is actually more expensive in LA metro. So you can either decide to buy a very expensive house (almost $1 million median home price in LA) in a place with great weather, OR buy a slightly cheaper home (around $800K median in NYC metro), in a place with crappy weather in winter. Third option--move to a middle state with cheap homes and great weather--why you find people moving from NYC to Florida and North Carolina, and from LA to Texas and Arizona.
You just have to see what fits best for you at the point of life you find yourself in.

I remember reading a stat that LA ranks 76th in the US for public parks, and just looking at the city on google earth it’s pretty clear they’re not a priority for the city. I’m from Sydney, and if you pull up Sydney on google maps, the first thing you’ll notice is just the large number of green spaces. Even the central business district tself is just very neatly wrapped with beautiful parks and great walkways, whereas in LA the downtown area feels like it is actively trying to repel you with the way it’s planned.

Public transit in LA is not as good as NYC but its getting a lot better and easier to navigate the city without a car. And as we speak, LA continues to expand their train lines. Again, just talking about the train lines. Buses are a different story... The only trick to this is that you have to be in an area where transit is available. LA has a homeless problem because LA is warmer and people come from different parts of the state and country to live. LA has its own mountain range in which it has to deal with deer, bears, coyotes and mountain lions. In LA county it snows from the 400 ft elevation to 6000 ft elevation and sometimes it snows in LA: Sometimes in Malibu and down by the beach. To beat the traffic wait until after morning rush 5am to 930 am. LA is huge! It is 42 miles from north south to 36 miles west to east or 900 square miles plus. It has its own mall city Lawndale with its mall centric community. Like NY LA is fast you may think it is slow it is constantly moving because maybe there is no snow to slow down the city miovement. It is so big that the an earthquake had to choose what part of the city it was going to shake. We now have Metro and it can take you from downtown east to the west to the beach. LA traffic is 24 /7 heavy.

Having moved to California from Sydney Australia, I don’t see the “nature/outdoors” as an argument for LA… it’s just so goddam ugly and has so few green spaces in the city itself. The sprawl is just a case study in how not to build a city and TBH THAT is why the traffic is “so goddam bad” - it is just staggeringly poorly designed.. In Sydney I had a tonne of gorgeous beaches with free ocean pools, one of the nicest coast walks you’ll find, the blue mountains on the far west side and a central business district within a beautiful harbour that makes it a genuinely nice place to visit even outside of work and has a lot of nice green spaces built within it. It’s great that there are some walks etc that you can get to in LA, but as someone living and working in the place, your day to day experience will have you feeling pretty depressed with the amount of time your an ugly-as-heck roads stuck in traffic. So in the US context, I feel like I may as well be in NYC as at least the place has a real business district and just feels like a proper city. You’re spending 90% of your time as a worker in the city, so it may as well have stuff going on, and for that aspect especially and NYC just kills LA’s surprisingly dull CBD for that.
