Visiting Los Angeles was a Mistake |

Many years ago, I used to enjoy visiting Los Angeles. So to rekindle some of the old memories, I traveled to San Monica, a beachside city in the greater Los Angeles area.
I was able to visit some of my old favorite places. Like Groundwork Coffee, Palisades Park and the Third Street Promenade. To my dismay, there have been a lot of changes to the city. And it simply wasn’t enjoyable.

My name is Scott and in 2015, I bought a Ram ProMaster City to live in. Even though I didn’t know much about RV’s and campervans, I set about building the van out as a minivan camper. And in April of 2016, I moved into my minivan full time.
Over the years, I’ve learned you don’t need to have a big skill set to build your own campervan. And that living as a minimalist and utilizing solar power can be a less expensive way to live. I’ve also learned that a minivan can be a very comfortable home.
Please follow along as I document my journey.

I think it’s good to trust yourself when you feel a bad vibe in a place. I’m in the UK and I’ve felt it in London a lot. I’ve stopped going there for concerts and such. Enjoying your videos btw. Cheers.
Intuition is a gift.
It's terrible that we are losing our countries 😞
@@johnhouston9764 You are not losing your country. Unless you are referring to how multicultural London is.
@@banyana6515that is exactly what they are talking about😂
I never lived in L.A. but I lived in a sizable city with all kinds of crime and traffic. I never felt safe walking too late at night. I lived outside of town in childhood where the danger was mountain lions, rattlesnakes, etc. I now live in a town in Wisconsin that's only 9 square miles with a fairly low population. In fact, a chunk of that square mileage is under the lake so it's really even smaller. It's lovely. We aren't crime-free but it's a good place.
I lived the first 20 years of my life in the LA area. The next 40 in the San Diego area. I'm now way up in northern Calif and love it. I would go 150 miles out of my way to get around LA!!!!!🤮 Heck, even that is too close.
@@donalee2023 Lived there for 20+ years. Too crowded and the freeways?????? Ugh. I became a country girl seeking the road less traveled. Hummmmm, Death Valley comes to mind certain times of the year.
They have really cleaned up the beach area of Santa Monica. Thumbs up to the City of Santa Monica.
They clean it every Monday because awful, ignorant folk trash it every weekend. 🚮
I lived in L.A. for 3 years but only liked the first year. Then San Fran for 7. LOVED IT. Got too expensive so i moved to FL.
Yeah I'm there with you Scott. I don't want to be anywhere near a large city. You are quickly one of my favorite RUclipsrs due to how chill your videos are without any crazy music going on constantly through your videos and you keep it real. I'll be tagging you in my upcoming videos in March. Thanks for sharing your journey...oh and btw I got an iphone 11 PRO MAX due to your recommendation and am filming with it so thanks for that too! 🙂
Aww, Thanks. Oh, you got an 11Pro, nice. Good to hear you like it, too
I am not sure that I'd like to live in a large city, either, but it's nice to have one about an hour and a half away if I want to go to an interesting restaurant or museum or the lakeshore. (The Great Lakes are something to see, like inland oceans.)
100% know that feeling. I had to get out of LA. Once I did I got the sleep my body needed. Been out of there 3 months now and not planning on going back.
I was talking about SoCal, not just LA
I totally understand that feeling, Scott. I had the same feeling, driving those streets last Oct/Nov while caretaking my mom. It was disorientating. I love watching the seaguls from that little trail, especially just before sunset, when they do the grand dance in the sky ... but for me, it was Venice Beach where I sold crystal jewelry & artwork & danced the drum circle ... so many memories ... 😺💜
We lived there. One day they filmed Starsky and hutch in our alley.🤣
I'm drinking a can of cold brew Ground Work coffee right now! CHEERS!
U can use ammonia in laundry - use half the laundry detergent with half ammonia. Also maybe to clean out ur "berky".
I'll have to try groundwork. Do you enjoy bluebottle? Just curious....oh and Ethiopian is the best, yum.
I took a bear in winter nap today Got new supply of melatonin yay
Hi Scott….born and raised in that area. Traffic has always been a problem but actually not as bad now as it was in the 70s, 80s & 90s. Rapid transit has made some headway but much more needs to be done. Air quality is so much better now but also needs more improvement. I left in 1979, moving to Alaska….25 years there and the last 16 in Seattle and Bremerton.
Santa Monica, along with the entire L.A. area, had measurable snow in January 1949 and a few dustings since. That four day storm did massive damage to the citrus crops. Up to a foot of snow fell in the San Fernando Valley and up to four feet in the mountains.
Oh, by the way, Scott…..would it be okay if we send one more shot of rain down your way this coming week?!😁
It actually snowed here? Wow. Thanks for that info.
It’s still winter right? I guess we can handle another sprinkle
Los Angeles's golden age is over. More & more of L.A. looks alarmingly like its opening cameo scene in _Blade Runner._ No joke.
The Pandemic has had an effect on a lot of areas, as well as the violence that seems to have accelerated.
It's scary that that bottle of ammonia looks so similar to white vinegar.
Ammonia should have been in the cleaning goods aisle. Vinegar is in the aisle with oil and vinegar.
@@pokergypsy55 That's true, too.
Very scary!!!!! I hate ammonia. I would get rid of that jug (carefully!).
Scott! For some reason I felt/feel at ease during the day and not at night. Especially when living in a car or tent.
I’m sorry. Not good for getting a restful sleep
los angeles is a big place and you have to pick your choices carefully . I'm in Culver city now , born and raised , should be hittin the road again in July for wherever ... I first left in 1975 , then 1995 and now 2023 .
Wow. Talk about a cliffhanger! Now I want to see where you spent the night and went to next!
The beach there looks like a lovely place to visit during winter. I would not want to be there with the crowds of summer. Anyway, I hope you find a more comfortable place to hang out for a while. Think I will make myself some coffee now. ☕️
My Dad’s restaurant (Biff’s) was on 3rd and Wilshire.😊
I lived in a big old house with two other couples and all our little kids and two renters a block away. 8 adults and 4 kids.
Everything was torn down and modern now.
I gravitate north towards Ventura and up.
You’re like the Mr. Rogers of Vanlife!😂
Lol. I remember Biff's. And The Penguin.
If you are feeling uncomfortable, than get out of that place!
Yes, I did get out of Southern California like I wanted ruclips.net/video/exAPrzu-o5E/видео.html
The view of the beach and water was really nice, thank you.
Excellent video, great shots of area and beach. Really helps to gain info on areas.
I always appreciate your thoughts on each location/city you go to! Knowing quality places to stay are valuable!
Beautiful! I've never been there and am not comfortable inlarge cities like that. Trust your gut! Thanks for sharing!
Oh this video brings back memories! Four years ago when I first started vanlife, Santa Monica was a place I spend a while at myself, because of the beach of course! I see they repaved that giant lot down on the beach side of the PCH just north of the pier! I actually explored the pier while I as there too.
That said I very much agree, as an introvert I tend to limit my time in crowded, noisy, peopleie places. So I can completely relate to thinking it might have been an uncomfortable choice to go there. Me I'm out in the Arizona desert right now! Nice and quiet, especially at night!
Safe travels Scott, thanks for the video!
I love your calm vibe mate. Stay well!
I appreciate the natural sound of your videos ….. the sound of silence, the waves, etc…
So glad to hear you thoughts on the places you visit. Also, like your thoughts on the homeless - let them be.
Didn't know about Ground Work coffee. Looking forward to try it!
2/17/23: 🙏🤣 Sudoku sign mind set. Wow, shocker from the Rural essence of WA to Santa Monica, CA-A bit nerve racking🧐😱. Coffee, mood enhancer👏
Patty Sue in MARYLAND
This vlog reminds me of your Seattle days walking around, visiting the local coffee shops, beaches and local interesting sites.
This is the second of your videos I now have viewed. Looked and ah!! See many more 😁
Sudoku signs lol sooo true
Follow your gut feeling if your uncomfortable with your surroundings... don't ignore it , always move on. 🚐☁️ ✌️
Hey Scott. You’re an introvert and I saw the “Weirdos Unite” near your stove, which made me think you should get the sticker that says “Introverts Unite!” Ha ha ha… thought you’d love the sarcasm in that sticker
Hahaha. Yes, I've actually drawn up a sticker/shirt Introverts Unite design. I need to get that design out
The TV Show "Three's Company" used to be one of my favorite shows based out of Santa Monica.
❤Love 3 company!🌞👍Can watch these shows anytime ,over,n over!👌✌️🤞🙌🙏🇺🇸🌅🌄🌟💫🌞
Be very careful with ammonia, it can be quite toxic. Especially in a vehicle.
My van has very good ventilation, so no worries there
First I thougt oh, such a long video, do I have the time now? Of course I had and now I think, what, already over? That happens very often to me with your videos. Not very much happening, no drama, no "attractions" but always very interesting and relaxing to watch. Like taking a walk with a friend and talk about normal daily stuff. Thanks for sharing and have a great Sunday.
The view of Santa Monica pier takes me back to when I first watched the movie Lost Boys back in the 80s
The parking signs remind me of Sydney Australia, where you can have a breakdown trying to decipher the crazy signs
I did have a breakdown!
The parking signs are to be read from top to bottom as they apply. If you remember that part, it gets a little easier to decipher. The top parking sign applies first.
@@Slimnbonez Well I learnt something new
maybe time to head up the coast to Santa Barbara or San Luis Obispo?
Ooh, Hearst Castle! That thing is fascinating.
Nice video. Pleasant & informative 😊
Come North to the Bay Area. It's beautiful up here. So much beautiful coastline, winery's, small towns redwoods.
I thought about visiting Santa Monica, but decided on Sacramento instead. Glad I did. Everyone there was nice to me that I talked to, and helpful.
Lived a big chunk of my life in different parts of LA County. Also lived in Orange County and San Diego so I’ve got something to compare it to. Some parts of LA are nice, some you gotta take in small doses and others you just want to avoid. The bad parts are: it’s densely packed and crowded, traffic, lots of run down sketchy areas, a fast paced/tense/unrelaxed sort of vibe, and you constantly have to watch yourself and be aware in some areas. So I think I get how you might feel. There are tons of nice areas too, but for me usually that means places and times where I can avoid the crowds
Sadly, So many things have changed in big cities these last 3 years
True
I love thé idea as coffee as a mood enhancer - made me smile.
Found your channel yesterday and subbed. Looking forward to getting to know you and learn a little about your life journey as a venture through your back catalogue of videos.
Hey Thanks. Appreciate you following along
Brings back memories. I miss Cal, especially the mountains :)
The view of snow covered mountains is indescribably beautiful
Hope your finding a spot that is more comfortable for you, the ocean is a great draw but not all that noise. I was shocked to not see you pulling out the old Yellowbird
You never know about the weather in So Call anymore, when I visited my mom, after my dad died, we had 85 degrees and 75 mph East winds that blew off parts of her carport and the potting shed fell down, that was in December, 2020.
Wow brave of you to go to the city, especially that one😇 I'm glad you are ok😊
It’s much safer here than we are being led to believe
@@StaticCamperVan O I C...... I was mostly talking population, (not necessarily crime, although it does matter 😇)
I don't do a lot of people 😉
Gorgeous views, very picturesque. Thanks for walking around and filming even if your gut said “iffy”.
🤩😍I loved seeing the Santa Monica area and recalling memories.
👍💡You’re smart and I/we don’t need to tell you to listen to your soul and feelings about that place. When my subconscious is talking to me about being some where (to stay or go) and an area is giving me an unsettling vibe and/or disturbing my peace….I leave.
😩I wish I could drink coffee like you do because I used to enjoy it. I’m hypersensitive to caffeine so I can’t handle caffeinated beverages.😩
Wishing the best peace, rest & safe travels. 💝
Pacific Palisades, Malibu, Marina Del Rey, Santa Monica Canyon, Rustic Canyon, Brentwood, are beautiful areas to visit… Santa Monica (City) can be crowded…. Look for the positive… you’ll feel better and have more energy… Temescal Canyon park (great place to park during the day) Point Dume Malibu has wonderful views. Michael Landon park at PCH and Malibu Cyn has day parking and it’s quite peaceful
Living on ur terms , responsible fo ur well being ,no1 2 constantly critique ur every decision becuz it affect's dem as well, keep doing u breatha , m 2 steps behind da life ,alway a gud day wen u post 🤙🤸
I think being there in the winter would be the way to go. I've only been there once, and that was plenty. I'm glad I got to see it, but all those parking signs. Lol
I'm feeling the same way about Falmouth in Cornwall. I was really looking forward to getting back here for the spring. But having been here a couple of weeks I'm now feeling, na, time to move on. So heading to Newquay on the north Cornwall coast then back to the Isle of Wight. Never stuck in one spot as a vanlifer ; )
When I moved back to S. California the air there was very different. It was not the home I remembered. I was uneasy and felt I didn’t know it anymore.
Scott, when a community refuses to uphold standards the quality of life goes down.
The homeless have to live somewhere. What would be your solution?
@@Patrick_Ross I don't know and that is an honest answer. I do know that being permissive and not consistently enforcing rules and standards appears to have made for more homelessness.
Oh no Amonia😱 you did well to heed your intuition...always safer that way👍
No surprise so many are moving to Vegas from CA.
You can dilute the ammonia and use it for window washer. That's what window cleaner is.
Santa monica was great back in the 80s and 90s. On 3rd St you had legends bar and who could forget the great Teasers bar. All the stores were great. The house band at the jungle room was magnificent, their covers of ac/dc and The Doors was unbelievable. Always gave the homeless there enough for them to get whatever they needed. Shame it's a shadow of its former self.
The only thing I miss about LA is Korean Spas- $20 passes for WiSpa can be purchased at Western Comics on east side of Western just below Wilshire.
L.A is my home. It the best place in the world. However it's good you got out of town when you did though. We got a nasty storm, worst in decades. Even had snow in the Hollywood Hills. Hope you dodged the weather.
Looks like they paved over anything and everything. “They paved paradise, put up a parking lot”
I was born there lived my entire life in Southern California. Moved out 4 years ago. Under no circumstances will I ever step foot back in California.
They say if you add up hiw much you spend on coffee over a month it helps cut down. Every time you're strong and deny yourself one put the money in a tin instead. I don't know who "they" are but I did it and my hubby had to scrape me off the floor 😉🤣
Hahaha, there’s a lot of bad advice out there
Anybody else notice the Chem trails covering the blue sky 🤷♀️
Thank you for your humor. All these 1st world problems we have. For me, I am shopping for a newer van, one I can stand up in and oh boy it is frustrating! So, thank you again for making me smile. Usually I am overflowing with gratitude and I guess I am grateful for this 1st world problem, haha!
Happy shopping!

I get your feelings, I hate big cities and the traffic. Thanks for sharing the palm trees, I love them, not to mention the ocean. Stay safe in your travels!
Sabor Mexicano stands for Mexican Flavor. Never seen that brand before, but I’m in another country, so wouldn’t expect to find it here.
Enjoyed the video! Thanx! 👍😎😉😃
That's why I own way out in the country and have created a beautiful big back yard with flowers, gazebo, gardens swimming pool and gold fish pond with only peace and wild animals as neighbors. When I want people that's my choice!! Paradise!!

Milano blend at Urth Caffe on Main and Hollister- soooo good.
I used to get the four shot latte at Urth. Can’t remember the name now. Urth is an awesome cafe.
Great video. Thank you
Being in a place you know you don’t wish to be… that stress could definitely effect sleep patterns for me!
Thanks for the mini tour, never saw that county, drove around it to avoid the traffic. I dont know that I like it either, a bit congested. I prefer that open space youve shown us much farther north!
Is it possible you might be a HSP along with being an introvert? Congested places can overstimulate me, sometimes to the point of exhaustion
Trying to explain being an introvert is difficult. Trying to explain the energy from being around people is darn near impossible.
@@StaticCamperVan Well, it is inspiring to me that you honor it. So often it is misinterpreted
@@StaticCamperVan I just tell people about the Myers-Briggs test. I took it as an adult while going to college full-time, working as a hairdresser with 34 other stylists in a mega BUSY salon and being around hundreds of people daily plus family. I grew up in a family that celebrated every event with parties, BBQs, get togethers!
Are you exhausted reading this?😂😂😂
Test results: I was just over the line into the introvert side of the graph. It explained EVERYTHING.
Why don’t they give that test in 2nd grade??😮

Hi, By the way coffee and tea contain tannins and they surround your cells and minerals aren't absorbed as well. Coffee and dairy products are the worst thing for mineral deficiencies especially iron. It's just a fact. I wonder if the coffee is wearing you out. I too love coffee. It was nice to see Santa Monica, I've never been to California. Your videos are a real treat.
I’ve had extensive testing from my naturopathic doctor. He gave me a very detailed diet plan but coffee is on the ok list.
Awesome video
I listen how you do things it give s me good ideas as well
I could tell that you really like California especially around Santa Monica and, you have a good plan for your future on what you'll do.
This is an older vlog. More recent vlogs are from the PNW where it is absolutely beautiful
Scott, great vedio.
The problem for me is the noise of the cars, I cant stand it! Still in Arizona, heading to sweat lodge meeting on CA & AZ border. My friend lived in van at Santa Monica this past Summer and loved it.
Of moved out of LA last month. I did not like living there at all. I moved to Tucson and I do like the rural feeling a lot. Not to mention, many things are way cheaper here compared to LA. 🙏
Scott i lived in West LA, off of Santa Monica and Corinth. I was at UCLA, rented a house with 4 folks. Had to laugh at your signs joke. I used to take the Big Blue bus.. love Groundworks too.❤
Hi Scott, i am from europe and visited LA a few times since 1994 and i have to say LA doesnt change to the good...(btw same with San Francisco) The moment when you filmed on santa monica beach was surprisingly very peaceful imo...seems a good time of the year to be there. I love California very much, a lot of really fantastic places to be...fingers crossed u find a nice place where you feel comfortable and get hungry again ;-) stay safe, greetings from europe
Totally agree with you on Santa Monica.. but I might suggest Redondo Beach 🏖. More laid back and safer!
Hermosa Beach was a favorite destination for years. Used to be a cool coffee shop I liked there.
Safer? Santa Monica sure seemed safe to me
Hi! Just wanted to say hello. I really enjoy your videos. I'm from Europe, and watching your content allows me to virtually experience the beauty of the West Coast.

You can clean glass with ammonia, and other things, it's a cleaner
Used to live in that bunghole. Crowds, noise, the people. Never going back & have no desire to visit. Anywho, enjoyed the video.
I was expecting some sort of Hitchcockian horror weirdness with this video. But alas, no platinum blondes, no domineering mothers, no climactic plot twists. The constant vehicle swooshes of traffic might be the negative energy you're feeling. I went to LA last month for a quick trip. The traffic is what gets me. So glad I don't need to be commuting on SoCal freeways.
It was the most relaxed I’ve ever seen in Santa Monica
People were talking about where to park in California I told them to watch your channel. I feel better out of cities with wide open spaces.
Thanks kindly Laura
If you want to relax don’t go to LA! As a native Californian I can tell you! Moved out of state a few years ago and every time I land at LAX I have that regret feeling too! I love seeing my friends and family but that’s it! Traffic is so bad and stress level is high!
Once I accidentally used cleaning vinegar in a recipe and was wondering why it was so bad. Luckily it didn't have any scents in it but was MUCH stronger than regular vinegar.
Oh no!
I grew up in West Los Angels back in the 60s, it was beautiful then. It’s awful now, I migrated to OC for 35 years then 5 years ago I moved out of State, I don’t like going to LA anymore, it’s a nightmare
Use the ammonia in your windshield wiper fluid, cut it with water. I'm thinking 1 part ammonia to 3 or 4 parts water. BUT that's a guess.
I lived in SoCal for 30 years - went there for college in 1975, then stayed on until 2004. During part of my stay, I lived at the beach - Venice. I'll never trade those years but yeah, it's not the same at all as it was in, say, 1977. :) But nothing is - right? I lived in the SF Valley - Northridge, Panorama City, Reseda, Encino, etc., during college; moved to Hollywood, then West LA, and then Venice after that; got married, and moved to the SG Valley - Pasadena and Glendora. Left Glendora in 2004 and moved back to Illinois from where I hail. I go back to LA once in awhile to revisit the ocean and would prefer my ashes to be buried on the beach at the big V sign in Venice. I think it's the air and the eclectic environment that fascinate me but it's changed so much in the past few decades that I can't envision myself living there again. The traffic is often a nightmare. I could engage with you in a loonnngggg conversation about my years in LA. I'm in a small town now in Illinois, comfortable with the lack of traffic.
Throw the ammonia out Scott- old timers used to use it to clean but it can have toxic fumes mixed with bleach or other cleaners.
These are stressful times. I understand about not liking noise or crowds. It feels invasive, unsettling, and unsafe. You can't judge how a crowd can change in a blink of an eye. And crime abounds these days. Situational Awareness is a must -which may affect rem sleep.
They sell Homemade salsa at any Whole Foods on west coast! Red and green both good.
