Both cities offer a wide variety of attractions, from amazing food to world-class entertainment to vibrant nightlife. However, there are also some key differences between the two cities that may make one a better choice for your trip than the other. So if you can only visit one, Los Angeles or New York City, which should it be?

I did a day trip from NYC to DC, and it's a very nice trip. You just take the early morning train from NYC and then take a train back from DC in the evening. Depending on your trains you might get like 10 hours to walk around DC which is enough to quickly see most of the major sites, because most of them are located not very far from the train station, you don't even need to take a public transport or rent a car, everything is very walkable. Just book your Amtrak tickets in advance to get a good price.

When was the last time you were in LaGaurdia? It's been totally renovated and it is beautiful! State of the art, nicest airport that I've been in in the USA. If you remember the old LGA you'll be very pleasantly surprised. And as for the rush, you're talking about Midtown and Lower Manhattan. Above Central Park all the way to the tip of Manhattan you have the cafe culture and people strolling and walking their dogs, so many parks - even natural woods. Northern Manhattan is a whole other vibe. If you've never been uptown, you're missing the real Manhattan. So visitors head north above Central Park and keep going to the top of the island.

I just came back from a 12-day trip to Southern California in which I spent 8 days in the LA area and three days in San Diego. Last day was a travel day. This was my first ever visit to Southern California. I've been to NYC twice in the past couple of years as well. Here is my two cents.
If you haven't been to either city, I would pick NYC over LA simply because I think it is more tourist friendly. Since everything is mostly concentrated in Manhattan, it is much easier to get around and do more stuff during the day. With everything in LA being so spread out, you really have to plan things in advance, and getting from point A to point B is a lot more stressful in LA, whereas in New York, it's a breeze. In LA, you most definitely need to rent a car. With that comes additional expenses for gas (which is expensive in California) and parking, which really adds up. I think I spent more on parking during my trip than for the rental car itself. In NYC, you can walk or use the subway. You're saving a ton of money on transportation alone by visiting NYC. If you do visit LA, I would highly recommend staying in Santa Monica. It has a great nightlife, nice beaches and the pier. Just a beautiful area to stay in. It really captures that California vibe in a way downtown and Hollywood doesn't. The Hollywood area felt kinda trashy. That being said, Santa Monica hotels are pretty pricey, so it's not a good choice if you're traveling on a budget.
Now if I could live in one city over the other, I would definitely pick LA. Much nicer weather, more laid back and I liked the vibe there more. I do enjoy the hustle and bustle on NYC, but couldn't handle it on a permanent basis. NYC seems like a great place to live if you're young and have money, but overall, it is a city I rather visit than live in long term.

I’ve been to NYC multiple times and LA once. And I would rate it very differently (I’m probably biased because NYC was my first big solo trip): 10-4 for NYC
    - Getting in: NYC (flight from Europe is much shorter)
    - City vibe: NYC. Yes, NYC feels busy, but I personally don’t feel rushed. (However, as you rightfully point out: Tokyo is a whole different story. Just incredible how relaxed the biggest metropolitan area in the world can feel.) And I just like to walk in these canyons of skyscrapers
    - Getting around: NYC - it’s just more convenient (and again: still not close to Tokyo).
    - Food: 2:1 for NYC sounds about right; about cheap eats close to tourist attractions/Hollywood Boulevard: In n Out-Burgee on Sunset Boulevard is less than 10 minutes from the Chinese Theatre
    - Cleanliness: LA - in a category that doesn’t really deserve a winner
    - Hotels: LA, yes better bang for the buck
    - Weather: NYC. I like the seasons, but I understand everyone who gives with LA
    - Cost: LA (however feels redundant after the hotels, which I guess wasn’t recoverable any way)
    - Night Life: NYC (although that’s not my focus)
    - Safety: NYC. Also subjectively. I felt uncomfortable on my travels 4 times, 3 times in LA (2 times on public transport, 1 time when walking back to my hotel from station), 1 time in NYC (public transport). Plus, I feel I saw many more people on the street (or in the subway) in LA than NYC
    - Things to do: NYC. Close race. I might even give it to LA, if it wasn’t so spread out. In NYC, I can Walk the Brooklyn Bridge in the morning, go to the 9/11 Memorial, walk the High Line, visit MoMA, stroll through Central Park and pay a visit to the Met all on my feet and in one day… try that in LA
    - Trips: NYC. Close. I really liked SF, but it’s a long trip.

I love California. The entire state is gorgeous, but if I had to choose for a vacation, I would choose NYC. I may be biased because I live in Florida and have Disney and the beaches in my backyard. Honestly, the homeless situation turns me off from LA. Also, it’s so big it’s very expensive to Uber around. If you rent a car, you can’t find parking. It’s so easy to commute around NYC. You have a lot of options.

I have visited each numerous times. New York is a required bucket list item for everyone. No debate.
On the other hand, I truly struggle to find anything memorable to do in L.A.. When I must go there, I watch cable in the hotel room.
In the end, I have amazing vivid lifelong memories of New York. Broadway, Times Square, Chinatown, Grand Central, Empire State Bldg, Wall Street, the ferry, Circle Cruise, the midtown blocks like the Diamond District and many others. L.A.? I saw the sidewalk handprints.

And I will admit that if I have time to make it over to Santa Monica I'll stroll down Venice/Muscle. But as far as going into the water in ANY part of California, don't even think about it. Go to Florida for beaches. (Piers are fun, but don't go in the freezing water.)
Then of course there's TJ which is well worth experiencing. But why go to L.A. for TJ? In that case, stay in San Diego.

Los Angeles has a lot actually! You just have to know where to go. Some examples of fun stuff to see & do: Santa Monica Beach/Pier, Venice Boardwalk, Hollywood Walk of Fame, Take a picture of the Hollywood sign in Lake Hollywood Park, Griffith's Observatory, Beverly Hills/Rodeo, & so many awesome museums like LACMA (has the iconic LACMA lights), The Broad (a really really cool museum), & the classic Getty Villa, La Brea Tar Pits. A drive to Malibu to see more beaches & cliffs. Long Beach. Santa Monica Mountains. And the ethnic neighborhoods hold their own too! The best Korean food in the largest Koreatown, the best Thai food in the largest Thai Town, the best Iranian food in the largest Little Persia. The list can go on, but I love Los Angeles & all of California for that matter! Hoping my list can help on stuff to see/do/eat next time in LA 😃

@@roberthasan6231 Seriously now. I'll take your Koreatown and Thai food and raise you by ten with Chinatown. And throw in Little Italy for free. A drive to Malibu so see cliffs? A ride to Coney Island to see all those amazing things you've watched in movies since you were born, and throw in a ride on the coaster. Awesome L.A. Museums? I won't even dignify that one, compared to at least 3 literally world class Manhattan ones. Then I'll take your La Brea Tar Pits and raise you Central Park. And then throw in the Statue of Liberty for free. Go to Griffith O.? How about go tour Yankee stadium and breath the same air as Babe Ruth, Gehrig, Torre, Jeter or you name it.
The thing is, all of those New York landmarks are things that I would shudder to have died and never experienced. Every single one I named. But I've been to the Tar Pits and studiously examined its exhibits. But life changing? Bucket list? Rolling eyes now.

I used to think NYC was unmatched only because it was the first “big city” I ever visited granted for not needing a vehicle and only that is why it remains supreme Where it fails is that it’s always overcrowded and everything is old but the city is constantly changing but still dirty. To me fall and winter are the best seasons in NYC summer is too muggy (try waiting in a packed subway station with multiple bodies in the afternoon) very uncomfortable.
I’ve only been to Los Angeles twice but each time I go it’s always an abundance of things to do that I forget to do the first time I went to Santa Monica to see how it looks but eventually drove to Oceanside because I wanted to get in cleaner water lol. I’ve been to knotts berry farm and six flags which are both fun and NYC doesn’t have theme parks unless u drive to New Jersey and what’s the point of driving there? I drive to LA from Phoenix and 5 hour trip is always free minded feeling and life changing seeing the landscape change all within a few hours plus driving is fun to me in general. I haven’t been to Universal Studios yet but it is on my list along with Runyon I can deal with the summer in LA over NYC because you can always drive to the beach

Been to both cities and I think they are both great for different reasons. The culture and cuisine in new york is better while LA had better small shops and eateries in my opinion. LA has great scenery which is beautiful mix of beach and hills while in New york you would have to leave the city for that. New york has better landmarks and the history is more unique as LA is very fixated on hollywood and entertainment. New york also has all its main attractions in manhatten which is easy to walk to or catch the subway while in LA its so wide spread that you would have to plan your days out carefully. Overall it totally depends on what kinds if person you are so if you are more of a fast adrenalin "live in the moment" person then I recommend new york but if you love a mix of chill vibes, scenery, entertainment then LA defs!
