After they acclimate in the bag sitting in the water, it would be a good idea to put some pond water in the bag a time or two before releasing the fish into the pond. It all helps with the acclimation process. Good luck.

Kendall, I suggest you transplant some pond plants into your ponds for both the fish, they even eat some pond plants & to clean the water. You could even transplant some catails to clean the water, lilly pads would look nice & give the fish shade & a place for cover, Japanese Water Iris would be beautiful in bloom too! Here's to hoping the fish continue to grow & spawn! I agree, they do need a feeder for food to grow especially if you'll be fishing from your ponds. Thanks for sharing! 😊

That’s a bad idea to put lilys in. It’s to small and they would take over the pond plus roots can puncher the bottom of the pond and cause a leak. While beautiful the best plant to use would be a floating play that would die off in the winter.

  • @Changowarlord

Howdy! I know this is an "old" video but this is exactly the sorta stuff I'm nerdy about. Plant some bulrushes, willows, water oaks, sedges, and cattails around the edge of the lake, throw some duckweed in there, and also some lily pads. They will provide shade, cover, leaves will provide nutrients, and fallen limbs will supply coves as well. The sedges and bulrushes will allow for more water to permeate and increase water volume. Alongside the edge of the embankment you should also plant some deep rooted plants. I do not know what range plants are native to Kentucky, so go to your extension agent and see what y'all can choose from.

    Things needed:
-Fish feeder at the end of that rock layer (will help future fishing easier due to training them for that location.)
-Few green lights by the fish feeder so you can see them at night
-Mesh for the water outlet (you will have to clear debris from it after big rains, but it will save your fish population)
-Maybe add some talapia due to mass spawning and easy for the bass to eat/hunt more often
-Water solutions/treating elements (check out bama bass’ page)

Might want to add some chicken wire over the outlet pipe, at least until the fish are big enough to resist the current. That, and/or plant some water plants above the outlet, to slow the current, and give them a barrier. A small collection pond at the outlet could be good, too, especially if you line the outlet channel with rocks as another barrier. Something deep enough to break up the outflow current, with rocks for shelter. Could give you at least the possibility of a second chance to recover the fish.

You definitely need to think about something to put oxygen in the pond water. Either a fountain, sprinkler system, or waterfall. I would also have the water tested for algae and ph levels. As well some other type of fish that will clean up the algae. Wouldn't hurt to mesh over the drain pipe to keep from losing fish. And last, I would get an underwater lighting and automatic feeder. You'll thank me later.

Idk if you've ever tried cleaning one of those pipes before, and I'm not assume that you haven't, but if you have you'd know it isn't as easy as it may seem. I used to work for my local gov. and we used to take care of the drainage systems, like ditches, drains on the road, colverts, etc. and cleaning those pipes when they are clogged is hard enough with a 6 man crew without a net, and we'd still need a special truck, to run a hose with a special nozzle, to blast water into the pipe to blast thro any mud, dirt or debris that's caught inside. Now this would happen maybe 1 time a year, and wasnt that big of a job for one or 2 of those pipes in a ditch, but I can't imagine if that pipe for the pond gets clogged, cause like Kendall said, it'll flood everything, including some peoples houses. A net would speed up that process significantly.

If you neglect the dam and allow trees/saplings grow, the roots will grow into the dam and if/when the tree dies, the roots will rot and leave holes in your dam where the roots were. I kept several aquariums many years ago, and I learned a LOT about the ecosystem needed to keep aquatic animals. This story here worries me as the bacterial system needed to clean up the water (nitrates, nitrites, ammonia, etc.) takes time to grow. Of course you can add these bacteria and they sell this bacteria (more than one type) to help grow the system. It’s always best to start with a small number of fish and animals and let the bacteria grow naturally. Good luck.

These are a great addition to any pond. Just plant them around the edge of the pond. Put rhe plants one foot apart and six to eight inches deep into the water. The difference in your pond in six months will be amazing.

You need to put oxygen in with a pump. There are two way to do it: one with oxygen directly in an "air pump" OR another with simple little 1 inch pipe where at the extremity, there is a "T" nozzle on which you fix a simple pipe to the surface. One fresh water pass through and (further) grab some oxygen to mix a through away.
I know, it isn't easy to get constant water running. There's maybe another way, the idea is to put oxygen in your lake.
Good luck with your pound. 👍

Place a mesh on outlet to precent them flowing down the creek and mow the cover crop to reduce predator cover.

You need to get some threadfin shad. They grow monster bass, and keep the pond clean.

I recommend a fountain or a bubbler it provides aeration and gives the fish more oxygen and helps maintain algae by creating an unstable surface.

If you want to make sure the earth is held together, get some mushrooms going in there too. They keep the ground very well together.

bluegill cover, you could put some willows growing out over the water. they will stay under the limbs brush and such growing low to the water attract bream. bugs fall off the limbs its good food sources for them. any kind of bushy tree or ones with a lot of limbs that can grow right over the water.
