LA vs. NYC: Which is Better?

- It's great to be back in Los Angeles, California! I'm here for a long layover -- visiting friends, and applying for a 6-month multiple entry visa to Thailand (fingers crossed I get it!)
Anyways, L.A. is the second biggest city in the U.S. and it represents the entire West Coast. Whenever I'm here, I cannot help but compare it to America's biggest city, New York, which represents the East Coast.
While both LA & NYC are big, cosmopolitan and diverse -- they are different in just about every way possible. Find out why in this video.
I'd love to get your thoughts - Which do you enjoy better - LA or NYC? Do you agree or disagree with my points? Comment below!

Here's my anecdote:
My friend lived in NYC for 5 years. He had very modest success as an entrepreneur, making close to 6 figures. He also had below average credit. During his time in Manhattan, the best living situation he could achieve was a rundown studio apartment shared with another person who was often out of town. Prior to that, he suffered through places with rat infestations, small apartments with multiple roommates, and due to his less than stellar credit, he often paid over 10k just to move into places. He was impressed and motivated by the skyscrapers, culture, wealth and women, but he often described his quality of life as "shit."
Since moving to LA, he got a really nice one bedroom apartment in West Hollywood (prime area); living alone. He did this with the same income and credit. He describes the move as "an upgrade." He's still surrounded by wealth, culture, and beautiful women, but no skyscrapers. The lackluster architecture doesn't bother him because he loves LA's weather and the landscape (hiking in the hills/canyons, and going to the beach). He swears he's never going back to NYC, though he appreciates going through the challenge of living there.
True story
Quality of life can be better in LA.
The mistake ppl often make in ny is they live in Manhattan. That's the first mistake😂

There are about 800 different languages spoken and represented in New York you just can’t beat the history. Also, NY is way more than just Manhattan! Step into Brooklyn or Queens and you’ll find some of the most diverse neighborhoods in the world all within a few blocks of each other. Yeah New Yorkers are stereotypically seen as “cold” and “impatient” but they just know how to make it in one of the busiest and toughest places in the world. When they do need to though they come together like nobody else can. The city after 9/11 truly healed itself because of the people and the NY spirit. It’s a city incomparable to any other love NY so much.
NY all day
Come on.
Stop soliciting.
NYC is great if you're a humorless top school graduate hyper-competitive workaholic or rich kid. Sure, a wide variety of people live there, but if you're a middleclass transplant, your social options are more those types of people, not the recent immigrants from China that live all the way out in Flushing or various other recent immigrant ethnic groups in Queens. It's not convenient going out that way. In day to day life as someone working there in a full time job, you are surrounded by the very serious, career/status obsessed yuppies and almost everything seems oriented towards them in Manhattan until you go north of the UES.
Thats my girl.

LA has way more to do. And if you include everything built off of it from Orange County, Ventura, Riverside and San Bernardino Counties, there are endless things to do. I was raised at the foothills of Big Bear mountain before they developed the houses, so it was fun being a Chaparral Kid roaming the Orange Groves doing desert things and then having the Mountains 30 minutes a away and the beach about an Hour away.
When I visited New York, I definitely didn't want to stay too long.

NY is much better by far. Anybody who says LA is better is either a foreigner or an american that havent been to either and just assumes LA is better bc celebrities and hollywood
I think it's a draw honestly. I could rant about the negatives and positives of both and in the end, neither comes out the clear winner to me. But wondering why you personally like NYC more. I live there and have been to LA and can't confidently agree with that.
depends on what you value. I absolutely love NY more, but there's a certain grind to it that wears away at you after ~1-2 years or so, especially if you're poor. it's easier to be poor in LA, but there's just more beauty, excitement, vibrancy to new york. people are smarter in NYC, more attractive in LA (although tons of attractive people in NY as well, and you'll probably see them more often because everyone is just in their cars all the time in LA). LA just seems like a place to live, make some money, enjoy a chill life, whereas NYC is somewhere that people go because they have strong passions and motivation to do something cool.
exactly and LA doesn't wholly represent the west coast I would say it should be SF vs nyc since there both dense and hall better architecture
I live in La and have only been in New York one time lol

Well first time visiting the US myself in April this year, I took Boston, MA over those two. Feels more American and you gotta love the city that first rebelled.
Agreed!
Boston is the best.
Fuck boston
I am from L.A but boston is the best city in the US
I lived in ny my whole life. Now in in la. La is more homey. It's a big city but you have neighborhoods of suburbs. New york is one big city.
You get overwhelmed with noise and people in NYC. And the heat either is hella cold or sweltering in the summer.
The weather even the heat here is doable. It's not sweltering like NYC.
Also I feel you get a lil more for ya dollar in LA then you do new york.
La people love to boost their lives. I do this. I do that. Meanwhile they are unemployed.
Nyers are real but mentally draining. Everybody in nyc has a chip on their shoulder from working 3 jobs
I feel like NYC is a place where you hustle
Los angles is both work and play.
NYC beats los angeles in party scene.
La the party scene is all over. NYC, especially manhattan. Theres like 100 clubs, bars lounges in the space of a city mile. You could legit go to a new bar every night and not be finished with exploring nightlife in nyc
Clubs generally close at 4 am in nyc. Some later.
La clubs generally close at 2 am and finding an after hours spot becomes a mission
NYC never closes.
Traffic is bad in both. Which is why most nyers use public transit more. NYC is a little worse in my opnion
In LA I been in rush hour where the cars move 15 mph. But I been in nyc traffic jams where you dont move at all for an hour straight.
NYC has history. It has it's own pulse no city in the world can recreate.
La is very natural. Many parks. Trees each house even in the hood has a garden. Beaches. Mountains, desert. All these terrains is in hours of each other
In nyc you gotta travel of the city for mountains. Nyc beaches fail in comparsion to la beaches.
La feels like forever summer. And I noticed that has improved my mood 140 percent.
NYC and it being gloomy and cold and dirty. Really impacts your mood.
NYC is gritty. I feel like NYC is perfect for young people who are finding themselves. It forces you to adapted or fail.
La is for people who love metropolises but want a home life . a real house.with a yard and garden and backyard.
Ny wins: my teen and young 20s
La is winning for me being 29 and moving into my 30s. La is just beautiful. The clear skyline. The beautiful palm trees. The color palette of LA. The vibrancy.
NYC was perfect for my 20s. Young. Wanting to party and meet people. Staying out all night.
I only been in la 6 months but I like it so far.
you nailed it with this assessment. thank you.
I'm from Chicago. But if I have to chose between LA or NYC, I would choose NYC. The people there are more business minded, efficient, and are more practical. The LA people just live in a bubble and and too self centered.
I've been to both cities. As a tourist, New York City is more convenient for me. NYC has many kinds of transportation that you can choose from. In LA, there are many beautiful buildings, museums, and views. But the city is sprawling. So it’s hard to go to anywhere you want.
I haven't been to either of these cities, but I would probably like los Angeles more as it's very similar to my own country; sun, beaches and warm weather

NYC is a better city if you don't mind the cold. It's easier to meet people because of transit and things are closer to each other. It's better for dating. Women often make the first move in NYC. LA's sprawl really hinders hanging out. NYC has a better nightlife. LA's 2am bar time really hinders it's scene. BUT I choose LA due to weather and family.

Zamiir Omer new york is better. There are definitely a shit load of opportunities here. In LA everything is about influencing and making money. You will not find happiness nor real friends. You wont even find someone with a real face since everybody seems to get things done there. In Ny the demeanor is real the aura of people is natural.

NY is 100x more diverse than LA. Over there you only see Mexicans and Salvadorians representing Latinos, meanwhile in NY you have one of every Latino. You barely find anyone from the Caribbean in LA either since the islands are too far from Cali. In NY you find Dominicans, Puerto Ricans, Jamaicans, Haitians and more people from almost all the islands

I have lived 80 miles East of Los Angeles since 2009. (And continuously within 40-80 miles since 2006.)
I agree generally with most of the comparisons-but if you have followed the weather this year , the two locations are almost transposed. We had a blizzard. And at the altitude where I lived, (5000 feet) between 7 and 9 feet of snow. (And yes, snow at lower elevations in neighboring Arizona this year too )
I have been watching your travel videos-some of the countries I have been to, many I have not. ( I believe I have been to 30 on 3 continents). I will try to compare observations on those videos in the future.

The weather makes L.A. better. You don't have to shovel snow. You dont need winter coats, clothes. You can hang out with friends outside, have a BBQ in the winter. Women show more skin all year round. Las Vegas, Mexico is close and a lot of people from L.A. travel to those places regularly. You can ride a motorcycle in winter.
