In today's video, I talk about my experiences living in NYC and San Francisco. I lived in NYC from July 2019-Feb 2020 and have lived in San Francisco since then. In NYC I lived in Williamsburg and in SF I live in SOMA. I find that a lot of people are interested in my experiences living in both cities so I thought I'd compare and contrast them and end off the video by revealing which city I prefer. Things I talk about include food, homelessness, rent, things to do, nightlife, transportation, people, etc.

As an Sf native who’s lived in both Sf and Manhattan, I can say from experience that fashion isn’t necessarily better. I’ve definitely felt overdressed/underdressed in both cities. It really depends on where you frequent, who you know, and what you’re doing that’ll determine the kind of fashion you’ll see in either. I work in hayes valley and attend a lot of formal events at the opera house/symphony and people in that area definitely tend to dress up even if an event isn’t going on, so my point is, the kind of fashion you see is dependent more on your daily activity.
I agree. With NYC Ive seen that it varies from neighborhood to neighborhood… block to block.
You go from Soho.. more trendy to hipster.. to midtown or Greenwich and its upscale.. more Hip hop and working Class in Da Bronx and Harlem.. Ect
One thing not mentioned is geography. It's a short drive from SF to mountains, woods, lakes, white water rafting rivers, wetlands, Monterey Bay, etc. In the city are beaches and marinas. Just over the Golden Gate Bridge is Muir Woods with magnificent redwoods. Yosemite isn't too far. Lake Tahoe isn't either. If you want to leave yourself open to camping, fishing, hiking, boating, river rafting, etc., you are more likely to do so living in SF where things aren't too long a drive.

San Francisco is just beautiful! Living cost is surely higher than anywhere else. It’s got a little bit of everything..
I prefer SF too, people here are generally friendlier than in NYC... generally.

@@SarahX I lived in SF from 1981 to 1989. I lived in the dorms at SF State University until 1984. After college, I shared a three-bedroom flat on Clementina St. in South of Market with two college buddies. The rent was only $660/month, split three ways. After that, I got my own studio apartment in the Mission District for $450/month. This was 1985 to 1989.
There were homeless people, but they were less visible. They kept themselves hidden because the cops were less tolerant back then. There weren't any tent zones in South of Market or any other districts -- except there was a tent zone in front of City Hall briefly, but the cops cleared it out.
I realize that my experience is irrelevant to today, but it gives some perspective on how SF is not as awesome as it used to be.
it was so interesting hearing about life in NYC and San Fran, I've never been but hope to go one day!

I am moving back to SF from NYC. I love the edgy style of New York. When I first moved to SF I did not get it. Sneakers everywhere. No one seamed to care about style. SF is very casual where as NYC is more Europe edgy style driven. I use to say In LA everyone wants to be a star ⭐️ in New York everyone is a star ⭐️ no matter the income Lol

Im From NJ , but i worked in the city for many years, work in Manhattan BK and Bronx.
I got a work offer in the Bay Area and definitely took it , NO REGRETS , im 48 already party and enjoyed my young years., don’t care about fashion or partying anymore im definitely into outdoors and better weather, im done with snow for sure.
California is definitely my place, yes rent and expenses are higher but also the salaries ., surprisingly car insurance are lower and home utilities bills no need of AC or HEATER.

Sarah, isn't wrong. I'm most likely 30 years older than her and I kind of wanted to disagree with her...but she's accurate. Two of the best urban areas in the US are New York City and the Bay Area (specifically San Francisco). (Sorry Chicago and LA).
No hate. Chicago is great, except for the Winter. LA is fun except for the time in the car.

This is a super helpful video. I just spent almost a year in SF and I'm about to move to NYC. Absolutely agree with everything you said about SF. Some things I will miss are the parks and outdoor aspect. I've lived in the Marina and it's gorgeous. Everything from the palace of fine arts to golden gate park are amazing. Won't miss the issues with crime and homelessness. Also I worked downtown and it felt like everything was closed by 8pm, weirdly difficult to find any food late at night. Should be interesting to experience NYC. I work in finance so I think it might be a better fit.
Thanks for the video. I live in Brooklyn and have often considered moving to SF (and a few other cities). Yeah, it's tough to say one is definitively better to live in since they both have very strong pros and cons that you covered. For me, the appeal of SF is the climate, setting, job market (tech), and less crowded and intense feeling. Like you said, NYC is obviously better if you're into fashion but the other side of that is there is /a lot/ of social pressure to keep up with ever-changing trends plus that x 4 due to seasons. It's more an issue if you align with any of the hipster variations. If you're more mainstream style, it's not that bad. I think SF has more potential to change for the better but it seems frustratingly stuck with the same issues and resistant to improving. NYC seems harder to improve yet there seems to be a lot more happening there despite that.

I loveeeee Brooklyn NY, although I could never live there I don't think lol .. but possibly! Also yes, NYC is just so expensive! That first San Francisco way of living sounds like such an experience! Transportation doesnt seem too bad in NYC .. I could understand uber and lyfting more in San Francisco .. biking around would be fun too! I love all the NYC entertainment you mentioned!! NY fashion week is something I really hope I can attend some year in the future! I lovvveeee four seasons so NY would definitely be more for me! I love that you filmed this video!

I am a native New Yorker who moved to San Francisco Bay Area 30 years ago to start my career in tech. Agree with your analysis. In San Francisco I mostly bike for transportation which is great in SF because the weather is great and the city is bike friendly. For NYC agree the subway is the best. Yes SF has great beaches not just southern California. Love both Golden Gate Park and Central Park but probably Golden Gate park. The pandemic and remote working is helping lower rents and that is a great thing. Same is happening in NYC. Both great cities but EXPENSIVE$$$$$
I grew up in NYC but moved to SF when I was 29. I left Wall Street for Silicon Valley. Why? Because living in San Francisco is so much nicer.
The air, sea, rivers, and streets here are clean. The climate is mild enough. I can bike, hike, ski, swim, and play sports in great natural spaces quickly. So much in such a small area, overall more beautiful and picturesque, especially the houses.
NYC wins on food, fashion, arts, entertainment, culture, and true cultural and professional diversity. But SF has a good enough degree of many of these, but maybe too tech heavy. Both cities are expensive, although NYC I think has more flexibility across all the boroughs for different budgets.
Don't get me wrong. I'll always be a NYer. Best place to grow up. If you get through it, you develop an unrivaled grit, hustle, and edge. I visit often to see friends, families, and refresh that unique NYC vibe and soul...but I've married and had kids in SF, and made many friends as well. You work hard in both cities, but to come full circle...SF is better when not working.
NY and SF are both great and it's a personal choice. Choose what is best for you...wherever that might be. There are many great places to live.
I’m in SF but wanna get out to either LA or NYC. Sf has too many crackheads/car break ins other BS. I would live outside of SF if I stay in Cali

Bay area native, never been to New York but I've been to east coast and it's not as great as here
I was thinking about moving to New York City, but I'm already established here in SF. I know every nook & cranny, and I love walking. If I moved to NYC, I would have to re-establish myself, which would mean I would need a New York state ID, a place, a job, and I would have to familiarize myself with the entire city, which could take ions!
Additionally, after watching this video, you gave me a clearer picture on what I really want. Also, I have family that live in Las Vegas, which is obviously much closer to me than if I were in NYC.
One thing you forgot to point out was the foggy summers here in SF. Other than that, great video!

The rent that you pay is rly good for sf. As someone that’s lived in the east coast my whole life I prefer the culture on the west coast. East coast culture is just more unfriendly.
Great Opinions !! Just missed to talk about China town , Diversity ,and Culture's in New York City .I visited California in 2021 but I didn't t make it to S.F.
Asian here and most of your comments are so on point. Really depends on one's preference and job opportunity. But I like NY four season weather more. SF is gloomy and cloudy all year round. And if you like mega cities where there are so many people on the streets even midnight then NY is your place. SF is almost empty in streets by 10. If you are into tech, SF Bay Area is your place.
Our streets used to be FULL, day & night until everything got pricey, forcing the natives out. The City lost it’s touch completely.. Now NY has a fun night life (from my experience)
NYC is not a mega city by any means.

SFMTA is still better than most US cities. I went to SF and I was able to move around by mass transit a lot easier than in my hometown of LA

New York is a big city, San Francisco is a big town. Life in New York and the opportunity to meet new people is more appealing. There's definitely a psychology of loneliness in San Francisco.
I've also lived in both, but i feel like San Francisco is a lot more social while in New York everyone always seemed to be in a rush. Definitely easier to strike up a conversation with a stranger in SF.
@@The_Antagonist07 That is almost always is the case when you move to a smaller place. To go to any tinsel town in Wisconsin or South Carolina and you will start having conversations at the first diner you stop lol. SF is more friendly because SF is way way smaller than NYC (0.8 millions vs 8.5 million residents), not a fair comparison.

I generally agree. I came to SF from NY. NY is way more diverse (in all ways), but the quality-of-life (and the money) are better in SF.

Thank you for making this video. I'm from Canada and I'm trying to decide between the two. My main two deciding factors are 1) finding a life partner 2) my career. It sucks because the best roles for me are in SF, but I hear that the dating scene is much better in NYC for men (while quite bad in SF). And so I'm trying to think about the kind of women I'd find in SF vs NYC. I prefer dressing nice, so SF people are just way too casual for me. But then I also want to build things so personality-wise I'm not sure which city will be best for me. Such a tough decision! I might consider taking a month trip to experience the cities, but Covid obviously makes it harder to evaluate the cities... Oh well, I'll figure it out. What do you think?
Hmm yea that’s tough, I feel like you really can’t go wrong with either city and both have a diverse pool of ppl. The biggest difference will probs be the type of job they have and some lifestyle variations due to west coast/east coast differences. NYC def wins on dressing up tho lmao

The beauty of California is it's diversity, not just with race, color, religion but in entertainment as well. There is fashion here too but for that it's gear more towards Los Angeles, SF is where the brains are in forms of technology and industries. I have lived in the Bay Area (which I loved) for a decade, then we moved up North because of my husbands job and now we're in LA. There is a lot of stuff to do in CA in my humble opinion. If you haven't already go to the Redwoods, visit the Chandelier Tree, if you like wine go to Napa Valley and visit the vineyards, there's also a train you and your friends can take you to places around the vineyards. Go to the museums not only in SF but in San Jose and other places, also there is a lot of pop ups too, my daughter has been to them, you just got to know where they are and yes, like anywhere else sometimes it does help a lot to know someone. There are also events where you get all dressed up, trust me my daughter has been going to those since she was only 16, although her major is Animation/Illustration, she still does that here in LA, not just college but the events. Whatever it is you're into, there's bound to be something here in California, specially SF. Btw, I just realized this video is 2 years old, I would just cancel my comment (long comment, lol) and I hope you have found more things to do but in case you still need ideas. Anyhow, nothing against NYC, I have been there only to visit, but that's just it, I have never lived there but I do wonder what it would be like, that's why I watch these videos. I guess in the end of the day, it's a matter of opinion, choice and what works best for you, best wishes and have a great day.

Yes I find people in SF kind of live in a bubble, riding on the money from tech most of which is centered around San Jose and try to convince themselves everything is better here since they pay twice for the same things. They are happy to compare SF with NYC because it gives a minor chance to confuse people into thinking it is a real big 24x7 city with people from various walks of life. The reality is businesses open here very early and close also very early. The population of SF is around 0.8 million compared to NYC's 8.5 million. There are people from over the world but most are in tech so there is no diversity in terms of people of different occupations and economic strata like in NYC, LA or Chicago.
San Francisco is not comparable to NYC. Los Angeles is. Los Angeles has more to do, the weather is warmer, and there's nothing in San Francisco other than the Golden gate, alcatraz, and right next door is Napa. That is it....The place is surrounded by mountains and desert. Once you're in San Francisco there's a feeling that you're stuck there and away from everything. NYC has Soooo MUCH to do. The culture, diverse posturing of people, the museums, the fashion, the food is FAR better. NYC wins this 1
I grew up in Western NY, spent about 4 years in NYC then in 1989 moved to SFBay area and never regretted it. (Of course it wasn’t easy raising my daughter without family nearby or caring for my aging mom in WNY).
I settled in Berkeley and have been there 30 years now.
Lots of your thoughts echo mine. It’s was mostly the weather for me. I didn’t have the friend network, took a cut in pay, wasn’t Asian but the chill nature and the ability to be active nearly year round were what sold me. Now when I think of NY I think of gray, grunge, and noise. SF is green, walkable and chill.
i live in Seattle. I really wanna move to both SF and NYC. I'd say 50/50.
Nyc life is far better to SF. Manhattan especially is so well planned out and thought out. I can instantly go wherever I want whenever and do whatever in Nyc. Can't really say the same for SF. That said california as a whole is stunning. New york state doesn't have as much to offer. It's a big move and I'll be leaving all my college friends in the bay area but I'm going for it
NYC sucks in comparison to Cali life. Enjoy those winters they are terrible in NYC

To tell the truth, to explaine moving and living in different areas of the U. S. You absolutely must consider the politics. High cost of certain regions do have a huge role as well.
Weather is much better in San Francisco. Never to hot or too cold. NYC has extremes but the fall is beautiful. Yes Asian and Mexican food is better in SF than NYC but NYC has the BEST PIZZA on earth, I would fly to NYC just for good pizza.
Clarification: SF has really good CHINESE food. Maybe good Filipino food too. For anything else you’re out of luck.
This was helpful but I don't agree that it's "sunny and palm trees" in SF. It's like gloomy and windy 95% of the time.

SF is more laid back than NY. Drivers in NY don’t give right of way to pedestrian crossing the street. It is very unsafe just to cross the street anywhere in all three boroughs. New York is not a p,ace to raise a family unless the person is very wealthy. Yes, young people ages between 20 -30 will like NY environment of hustle and bustle. Eventually that.will change as they transition into next stage in life of raising a family. Overall, SF is the best place to live after fact comparison with NY.

30 year NY’er. Never been to San Fran but it looks nice in the movies. I like NY because Madrid, Paris and London are only 6-7 hours from JFK. I like the Hudson Valley’s farm food 1 1/2 hours away. And Montauk beaches 2 hours away. Those are my reasons for never leaving NY.
Exactly. 6 hour flight from NYC to London, just tap in at the e-gates without talking to anyone and you're in central London. If somehow you get bored of NYC you can go to London anytime you want.

All my friends and I talk about are music, movies, new ideas, podcasting, writing, etc etc. This is what happens when you're out in Fake Brooklyn ;) jk jk Also, there is some fantastic dim sum in Sunset Park!! I'm going to be visiting SF soon, so I can't wait to see how that vibe compares.

Williamsburg is Brooklyn, not NYC. SF is really walkable or bikeable. NYC beaches are NASTY. I'll never live east of the rockies again.
Boston is a pretty nice city east of the Rockies. It has a very hometown New England vibe. There they like their baseball, microbreweries, Irish pubs, higher education, clam chowdah, and history.
Brooklyn is IN NYC. NYC consists of 5 boroughs.
@@saratrejo6658 yep I get it, used to live there. Usually when people say they are from New York City, they mean Manhattan and their address is New York, New York. Otherwise they will say the live in Williamsburg, Astoria, etc.
