Doors look good, how do they feel on both sides running a flat hand over them? Dry spray is a bitch when lacquer retarder isn't used. May slightly slow down dry time, but helps eliminate over spray sediment, especially when using a lacquer thinner that is only good for cleaning your equipment when using Lenmar products.
If you like lacquer try using a lacquer sanding sealer primer sometime, stuff is awesome. Not necessary, but priming your door panels and rail/stile edges before assembly is nice. It reduces the amount of inside corner sanding you need to do.
Great video and beautiful work handyman! I've been using ppg breakthrough paint for cabinets. Water based, dries as fast as lacquer, and is extremely durable. Rated for foot traffic. I spray it with the graco tc pro cordless and finish is flawless
Where is your safe glassess for your eye? I don’t know how old you are. After 50-60, your eyesight will be very dim. Please use safe glassess for your health.
There is something about kitchen cabinets that needs to be done professionally ))) you can’t do them cheap that is for sure. In most cases, Kitchen is what sells a house. Love your work!
We was told that our large kitchen was going to cost over $10,000 to replace the old cupboards. Did them through fastcabinetdoors.com and they have the best quality I have seen anywhere. No particle board, hinges and slides for under $3000. So pleased and your so right the kitchen is what sells the house.
Vintage Gopherwood, disagree it’s like anything, if you do your research, prepare everything & follow instructions, do a couple of test runs on a old kitchen cabinet door that either neighbour has thrown out for rubbish pick up, I was quoted from $22k to $35k new kitchen by trade professionals, so all I did cause I kept all appliances & water/power same, $1200 to paint/ including new splash back replaced old tiles, handles etc, I had a stone mason to come in and change the bench top to granite, about $1600 installed, looks great for $2800 only, I have friends who have payed $26k & have had issues with the Tradies even going to consumers affairs as work not to standards, at least you know you have put the time & effort in your own work, also when people come over I tell them it cost $17k as i already had new appliances, they believe me until I explained I did it.
Kitchens sell a house to a point. At certain price points people just replace everything so it’s really the kitchen size rather than the actual stuff in it.
Interesting, I think you'd get better results by having the doors flat when you spray them. You'd never be concerned with runs...Place the doors flat on two 1/2 inch by 3/4" strips of wood. Also, with "your" method change the nozzle position so you can spray the door vertically first and then change it quickly back to spray horizontally. You always have to spay the doors in both directions to eliminate the look of lines...I have no idea how I found your channel, but I used to paint cabinet doors professionally in a real cabinet shop. It looks like you got good results. Man...that's a small space to be painting in. Good job.
Do you use lacquer on all your paint grade projects? Do you never use enamel? I’m really intrigued by this idea. Everyone I know uses latex or enamel for cabinets and lacquer only as a clear top coat over stain. Appreciate the videos and would love to hear your response. Thanks!
Beautiful job, Handyman. Just wanted to confirm that you didn’t use primer first, right? Is it not needed with lacquer? Also, do you have any concerns about the lacquer cracking with the movement of the wood? Any thoughts you have would be appreciated.
@@broken1965 on wood you can go with Evercoat G2, sand and then automotive base coat and 2k satin clearcoat like PCL, great, hard and durable finish, I use satin but you can got semi gloss or the finish that you want plus the automot8ve colors are colormatch
I thought those looked like sterile gloves in a close up, then saw the package in the background....very nice sir, it says a lot about the attention to detail and ultimate craftsmanship. 🤣 Or maybe you’re like me and bring home expired gloves to use around the house.
Ive seen in a couple refinish videos guys use the hooks on the tops of the cabinets. You also used them for the doors too. What do you do when you are done to repair those holes left by the hooks?
See, all this bullshit and f'n nonsense he showed having to do, THIS is the path I've been seeking. I dont know no damn brush painted cabinets!!! No wet sanding though? Sanding with just one grit in between? I bet they looked damn good when they were done, but they coulda looked better! Then again, these were for a custom (presumably) that wanted white kitchen cabs to begin with (and certainly is okay) so I guess the project I'm envisioning is at a different plane...Thank you good Handyman sir, for putting this video together. I definitely learned a few things!
Have you ever tried and water based pre cat lacquers like "General Finish" brand? If so could you get similar results without the fumes of Nitrocellouse.
Team Handiwerx came out of nowhere, couldn't find any trademen or clients that have reviewed them. Could their business model be to sell $25 background checks?
While they are "new" they have a video 11 months old on youtube. In Google play store there app has 100+ downloads, not many for being around for a year. Does handiwerx sound like a good idea, yes it does. Until they grow I don't see much if any work coming from it.
They look beautiful ~ very very nice! :) Trendy colors come & go but white kitchens never go out of style. For long, anyway. They've been around since the early 1900's. White kitchens are pretty, cheerful, bright & clean looking work spaces. Eventually everybody returns to white.
You have all very good tools, but I have done a very bad job! I dare you to do stain and high gloss finish on those cabinets. I can show you my stain cabinet with high gloss finish.
I made bedroom furniture for my daughter and sprayed it with a Titan Airless sprayer, using a latex paint from Benjamin Moore that was designed for furniture. It required a full 16 hours before re-coat. Did 3 coats, first sanding at 220, second at 320. (One portion got 4 because I did a bad job there). The result was as smooth as glass and looked like it was lacquer. Previously, I did some kitchen cabinets with regular trim-paint on oak and it was nowhere near as good as yours. Home owner was trying to save some money.
Good video! Just curious why you put the hooks in the top of the door, not the bottom where you'll never see it? Also, if you're concerned about their being debris in the gun and you pour the paint out to strain it, you may want to clean the gun out too because anything that doesn't get poured out will come out in the next coat. I watched this video mainly to see what people are spraying on their cabinets as well as if I can use my Sata automotive paint guns to spray it. You covered both of those topics for me!! I am curious what size the fluid tip is in that gun. Is it a 1.3 or is it bigger than that? Thanks again!
I'm guessing these are uppers, so you wouldn't be able to see holes up top. Then you put hooks on the bottom side of the lowers and hang them upside down to paint. At least that's how I did it to conceal the holes.
Build subsequent coats, lather it on. Then sand flat with 320 until no shiny spots appear. Apply final coat(s). It’ll have depth and have that hard candy look and feel.
Hi, great video. For the front cabinet doors do you spray 3 times?. Also, for oak cabinets do you think 2 coats of wood filler or aqua coat is sufficient or would you recommend 3?
Happy to hear you read my comment about my painted oak grain cabinets and to hear your feedback. I agree if I was in the business (was once) I wouldn't hand paint them. You have to put out factory finish because that's what the customers expect. I don't have to guess what my expectations are for my own kitchen. (Also am sooo much better at brush painting than the average Joe.) Thanks for this video. Very informative.
Curious of your gun settings: tip size (1.4, 1.8?), how many turns out from full closed and psi at trigger, not at the compressor. With auto paint I'm shooting it around 23-25 psi for base, more for clear. Not sure how this lacquer compares.
Yeah I must admit I was pointing at Strainer saying you missed a step... Lol, anyways Cabinets came out Awesome. Can't wait to see them built and installed.
Damn those look great. I could have used your help when I painted my maple cabinets last year. Everything that could go wrong did...several times. I finally called several painter to give me a bid to paint the cabinets. One guy that supposedly specializes in painting cabinets wouldn’t do it even after I basically offered him a blank check. That’s how desperate I was. No takers so I did it myself.
Two questions. 1. How much lacquer is a typical kitchen. I bought 3 gallons and I'm afraid it's not enough. How can I figure that out. It's pigmented so I can't just go grab another gallon the kitchen is about 30 doors 10 drawer fronts and face frames. 2. How much are you thinking the lacquer? I see all kinds of information. I experimented with precat on furniture and was told NOT to spray inside unless I wanted to blow the house to high heaven. Even with proper venting. Outside spraying managed to piss off a couple neighbours. Is that a water based lacquer?
First off I enjoyed your video and use lacquer base paints a lot. I am very familiar with lacquer base painting. My comment is a safety note for you, Please do not take it the wrong way. As a retired Firefighter and still work in the repair business I can not stress safety enough. I see that you have your compressor in the same area as the spraying. Just a note of caution, its the fumes that can ignite so I see in the video several explosive areas of danger. They are your compressor, lights, electrical outlets. I do not know if you have any mechanical ventilation for the fumes. I have seen first hand how something like this can go bad. It only takes a very small spark for it to go off like a bomb. I will continue to follow you and enjoy your work. Just trying to give a little safety note and I am sure your a very safe person. I hope that you do not take offense to my comments, I meant them in a very good way. Have a great day! And keep building!
eliminating grain on oak cabinets no matter what you use is never ever going to happen. You can try to minimize with grain filler and high build primer but it just doesn't happen. looks like you painted a nice hard maple rail n stile with a MDF panel...I'd say that's quite the difference. Bought a house with painted cabinets. Looks like they did a decent job, but as you point out, you can see the wood grain. I want to use this method to paint them to match a hutch we have (kind of a cream color). The cabinets were painted with a waterborne alkyd paint. Can I spray a lacquer tinted to a cream color over the alkyd paint? What tips do you have for prepping these for doing it this way?
Hey @the_hand_e_man... we just had our cabinets painted and I do not believe the guy that did them would meet your standards. I hope I am not redoing them in a year or two. If so, I will do it myself, one door at a time if I have to. Thanks for the attention to detail. Even the way you masked off the hinge holes, my guy did a terrible job there. Some of the hinges didn't fit right as you mentioned. Fingers crossed. He did at least spray the cabinet doors and drawer faces.

Can I do this with a 20 gallon, 120v, and 200 psi compressor?
That cloud of over spray is crazy. Seems something is off with the air fluid ratio, but ok.
Tip : DON’T use hangers!! Your work keeps wobbling as it’s only hung at one point! Use 2 attachment points instead!
My interest ramped up when I saw the Coors Banquet 🍻 nice job !
You should try a set of non swiveling hangers... Great video by the way...
Lol. Why did you set out the filter and then just dump in gun without filtering? Just kidding. Great video!

Wondering what you did with the hole from the hook
I would think a quick wood fill, or even caulk. Then just a dab of paint, its so small
70 psi for laquer seems very high. That's like pushing thicker latex. pressure. That would explain that massive cloud.
Great job on the cabinets.👍
what kind of gun do you use to paint, which do you recommend
He mentioned it in the video and also listed it in the description.
Hello, I could not find the exact Lenmar Ultralaq as shown on the video. BM website shows silmiar product but they come with clear color. Please help.
Did you forget to use the strainer? Or skip it on purpose.
Watch the entire video for the answer
You even have a spray painting room. Is there anything you don't have or can't do? Very impressive. Keep up the good work.
It looks like its illegal to spray the lacquer without a lacquer booth. The fume makes lots of dust and smell.
I experimented with precat on furniture and was told NOT to spray inside unless I wanted to blow the house to high heaven. Even with proper venting.
