I have watched over a dozen vids on how to paint kitchen cabinets. This is hands down the best one I've seen. The best! Jeff, you are clearly an expert. You explain the process in clear, specific terms and come off as both authoritative and approachable. You can't. These videos always make one think "Hey, I can do that!" You may be able to paint your kitchen cabinets, but not with ease. I see your reply is a year old. Did you try it? I hope so and I hope your kitchen looks great.
Pro tip - when using a new roller cover, roll it on a piece of 3ft long tape (attach one end to a table) back and forth to remove the loose lint so it doesn't end up on your surface.
I coil a piece of tape around the sleeve and then peel it off. For cabinets though I use solid foam roller. And instead of dipping it, I try to brush paint onto it. The less paint on it the better, just barely enough to not be dry rolling. If a spray finish is not vital this works well with a little 0000 steel wool and satin clear coat at the end and ultra fine finishing pads from an auto parts store.

Theirs a pandemic and you’re worried about kitchen cabinets, yet are not quite sure if you’ll have the expenses for. 6k is a very fair price from a professional painter this video is labeled diy as it should because never would I a painter brush and roll cabinets nor would any other professional painter, unless you’re using oil in a controlled environment with zero dust particles.
I am a complete novice when it comes to home renovations. And I used this video to redo my kitchen cabinets! It turned out great and even my husband was impressed. Now I’m back to get a refresher to redo my bathroom cabinets! Thanks for the great content!
I’m 22 and watched this video 6 times before painting my parents cabinets. Had to do the primer and 3-4 coats of paint. My body was aching. Felt like I was dying. But the cabinets look like brand new ones!
This was an incredibly helpful presentation. We were quoted thousands of dollars to have our cabinets sprayed and after watching your video, we decided to do it ourselves. We kept referring to your video throughout the process and our cabinets are absolutely gorgeous. Thank you, thank you, thank you. Extremely well done!
I have spent a lot of time in Germany and the quality of workmanship reminds me of the kind of detail work done in Deutschland. Very impressed my friend. The end results are outstanding.
I've been binge-watching countless videos in preparation to paint my cabinets. If I had found this one first, it would have saved me a whole lot of time. This video is excellent and details every little detail you need to know.
My wife & I watched this video, and followed your advice, especially paint selection. Our new mantra: “Trust the paint” While the paint was a bit more expensive, we were not disappointed. Our old tired cabinets look better than we could have anticipated. We did the hard prep, but our end results were something we could both be proud of. THANK YOU!
@@simonebrouillette7611 We used Bear i300 Cabinet paint from Home Depot. Still happy with our choice. We have 7 grandkids that regularly put it to test, and it looks as good as the day we put it down
I love how he does that. I’ve learned so much from him just doing basic things and explaining everything thoroughly as he goes. He is one of the best home Reno teachers on RUclips.
I have been around and working in the construction field in various positions from trim carpentry to painting for 40 plus years and I have learned more watching your videos than I have all those years together! You are an excellent teacher/instructor! Thank you
I watched this video several times in pieces and it was invaluable to my project. They turned out better than expected! I learned several things along the way as a beginner, which I’ll share now. DO NOT SKIMP ON ROLLER QUALITY. I used a Wooster high density foam roller after using a cheaper one initially and there was a world of difference. After getting the technique down, the final texture was minimal and could be mistaken for a professional spray job to the untrained eye. My sister had hers sprayed by a pro and I actually prefer the slight texture, not to mention it’s easier to repair nicks and scratches. I suggest painting in sections if you’re a beginner, starting with the area you care about least. My technique improved greatly by the end. The only part I wasn’t 100% happy with were the detail areas that required a brush. Slight brush marks are still visible and the paint is not quite as thick in those areas. I considered using a can of spray paint in those areas like the video suggests, but ultimately decided against it since I was 75% done by that point. It may have been worthwhile. Most importantly, this project was not hard, it just required a lot of patience.
This is at least the second large project Jeff has helped walked me through with great tips and expert advice. He explains everything in a way that someone at any level can complete their projects the right way. Great video and made my kitchen remodel so much easier. Thanks!
Here's a tip on the rim of the paint can that gets filled with paint: Take a small nail and tap a few holes in the rim space with the nail and a hammer. This allows the paint in the rim to drip back into the can, and when you put the lid back on, it pushes that paint through the holes, keeping the rim cleaner. You can also drill holes with a small drill bit, instead. This is definitely one of the best videos on this subject, and I have some professional experience, so I kinda know.
I was quoted 4500 for a small kitchen. Found your page and I am so glad! You give me the courage to do it by myself with all your tips and tricks and I am excited to do it by myself now!
Watching this gave me the confidence to tackle this project on my own. We couldn’t be happier with the results and have Jeff to thank for that. It’s truly a pleasure to watch your videos. Thank you thank you thank you.
Thank you! I wish I knew your name, I love how much I learned from how you teach. I'm 73 years old and I'm going to do my kitchen myself. I love painting and did my LR, BR, Bath R., and hallway walls. I did it all twice and also all the doors. Even the baseboards and no taping. I hate taping so it takes a bit longer. I did have the ceiling done because it's too hard for me. I love the look of fresh paint and the satisfaction of doing it myself. So glad I can use some of your technique s.
The tip on using Kilz primer spray paint to prime the recessed door detail is “GOLD”!!! This tip alone will save anyone who uses it many many hours of tedious and frustrating work and yield a higher quality finished product. Painting the recessed trim on doors is by far the least enjoyable and most skill demanding task in painting cabinets. Taking this a bit farther, one could stack the doors half a dozen high, line up the edges and spray all four sides too. Well done….. again! Cheers
Seriously this guy has the patience of a saint. He does a fantastic job at explaining every detail of his work. Personally I could not do what he does as I have little patience and want a job done yesterday.
You make me excited for my projects instead of anxious, you're calm, breathing steady, taking your time but being consistent. Just wanted to thank you for the guide. My wife and I used your tips in this video to paint our cabinets and transform our kitchen on the cheap. Thanks for all the great videos
I was a painting contractor for 28 years. I did cabinets a bunch of different ways. You can spray them. You can roll them, or you can brush them. As far as prepping? You can sand them and use a Bin oil based primer, or you can degloss them by applying a liquid sandpaper followed by two coats of paint and primer.
I fully expect millenials to not get this reference. Jeff, when you put the doors back on, I didn't see any numbered tape. Did you have them numbered elsewhere or was there another system you used? Also, what if the cabinets were natural, stained wood with no poly. Would the steps be the same (sand, prime, paint) or would you prime, sand, prime, paint? Love your channel, BTW. Great info, great presentation.
Excellent, "DIY How to Paint Your Kitchen Cabinets A to Z" video , to covers everything I need & want to know to accomplish outstanding, top-notch and skillful results. I am first time doing it without any handyman or construction experience and saved thousand of dollars 💰 Thank you!
I followed this Guy step by step and the results were absolutely fantastic. It is hard-work and a lot of patience is needed you also need a station/ room Garage shed for prepping etc
Good thought putting mark on top / bottom hinge, I was thinking that before you did it. I’d also mark the door number inside the hinge hole since you have to pull the tape when you paint.

I wanted to thank you for this video Jeff. I found to be extremely helpful in my kitchen painting project. I followed your guidance to the letter and, I’m glad to say, my wife loves the transition from dark oak to satin off white. I couldn’t find the particular Dulux paints that you used, here in Edinburgh, Scotland, so after much research, I used Zinsser BIN primer and V33 cabinet paint. Both performed very well for me.
We just bought a house and the first thing I want to do is paint the cabinets. I ran across your channel amongst my researching and I LOVE how thorough you are. The first person that takes their time to explain Thank goodness you posted this video and thank goodness I found you haha.
Great to hear Shelby, congratulations on your new house. Cheers! If there is anything we can do to help just ask questions in the comment section of any video and we will be there to assist.
I did the same thing when we bought our first house 3 years ago. Best of luck, wish i would’ve seen this video before setting off. I used a Rustolium kit and it just didn’t hold up as well as we would’ve liked. As he said, the prep work is key. The kit included a cleaner that they described as “no sanding necessary”. Bottom line, I should’ve spend the time to sand.
I watched your video twice and decided to try my bathroom cabinets and they came out awesome!!! Thank you for the great video and making it seem so simple.

Have watched several videos and THANK YOU ! Before I start any project, even ones that I have done before, I watch one of your videos and you have saved me time (not to mention frustration) every single time .
I recently painted my cabinets. The process was a little time consuming. I actually put the cabinet number in the recess for the hinge and put a small piece of painters tape on the hinge with the corresponding cabinet number. I also made a post note and posted it on the wall with how the cabinets were numbered(left to right and upper/lower). For the drawer fronts, I put the number on the back right in the middle so that it would be covered by the drawer box when they were reattached. I was able to use an airless painter sprayer in my basement to do the painting. I love how my cabinets came out.
Just finished my cabinets yesterday and I never expected the amount of time and work they would need. Definitely a project! Great video as always with great explanations
Mine are the original that were put in when my house was built in 1979. I’m surprised that they are still in pretty good condition. Not the new shaker style everyone loves, but they have a bit of character that I like. When I take them down to refinish then I’m going to have to deal with unscrewing them. If that proves to be a problem I’m probably going to have to paint in place.
Just bought my first home and I NEED videos like this to DIY my way from a very 80's house to a modern one on a strict budget. Thank you!!! And thank you for taking the time to explain what you're doing, how you're doing it, why and with what tools. I had felt very overwhelmed until seeing this.
I remodeled and repainted my daughter’s. Cabinets a. Few years ago. Thought everything looked great...until we sat down at the dinner table. I had forgotten to paint underneath the wall cabinets!! Below eye level when standing!😝
At first, I thought those cutting skills had to be from so much experience. Then you did it left handed and I thought there might be hope for me! Thanks for an awesome video.
I cannot thank you enough. We have been renovating an older house we just bought and we watch your videos first for any projects. We’re currently painting the cabinets and this was right on time
In February i wanted to take advantage of my last few weeks before starting the final two classes for my Masters. I watched this video on my lunch break for a week straight, some parts more than others (i'm not handy at all). I remember when i stared at all of my cabinet doors in the garage, stripped... the point of no return... it was a terrifying moment. But man, this video did me well from techniques to recommendations on product/tools. I took my time; it was hard priming/painting and just sitting there and waiting, but I was patient and they turned out fantastic (even got the boss lady's stamp of approval). Not sure how often you check out the comments, but I genuinely wanted to say thank you. Now... that ugly green counter top of ours...

My cabinets were flat black.....nasty! I followed your advise . Couldn't get that type of paint here in New Mexico... but was able to get some other good paint ...Sherwin Williams. Hi Jeff. Just wanted to say my husband and I redid our oak wood 80's kitchen cabinets into white new cabinets ( soft white - color) from dulux followed everything you did in your video. Took us 3 days, was worth it. Our kitchen cabinets turned out BEAUTIFUL! turned out looking soo fresh and light. WE THANK YOU SO MUCH! We love your videos.
tip: only on metallic paint cans make 4 holes with a nail in the channel edge of the can so the paint in the edge can go back into the can dripping by itself
I always use the plastic spout that snaps on the can. I still get paint in the rim, but I don't get much paint running down the side of the can. I use the brush to take out any paint in the rim and wipe off the spout before removing. Works great for me.
I love the tip about numbering the doors, drawers etc. I missed the part about marking them off site (after the tape is removed) to return them to the same location when back at the project. This video gave me courage to try this project.
Superb in-depth insights and explanations! Love the paint technology and process explanations, discussions and alternative options etc. Tips and tricks-of-the-trade galore! Jeff is a true expert. A brilliant video to watch and save for later reference. Thank you Jeff!
What do you think of Benjamin Moore paint for cabinets? I just filled in the gap above the cabinets (new house) and couldn't stand the gap. I need to paint and add tile. I looked at Sherman Williams' paint and couldn't find a gray blue color that I could live with. I want a dark color but with a hint blue. Steel blue? The floor that we installed is solid wood, warm tones.
I'm about halfway through my kitchen doing this, everything I've experienced has been exactly what you outlined here, such a great video. I keep doing touchups on the doors over and over thinking I should have more coats (doing 3 before hanging) but overall I love it.
Thank you for this comment!
Jeff, I’m speechless. You are the epitome of quality workmanship. If everyone did work like you, the world would be a better place
I’m 22 and watched this video 6 times before painting my parents cabinets. Had to do the primer and 3-4 coats of paint. My body was aching. Felt like I was dying. But the cabinets look like brand new ones!
can u share videos?
Bit dramatic lol

Can't get enough of this guy. His bright personality and friendly and informative ideas are what the world needs.
This guys videos are the best. Very helpful. Plus he’s pleasant and warm in his tone and personality. Thanks for your videos!!
You’re legitimately the bob ross of household renovations.. like i don’t know why I’m watching you but I love watching
🤣
I have spent a lot of time in Germany and the quality of workmanship reminds me of the kind of detail work done in Deutschland. Very impressed my friend. The end results are outstanding.
I've been binge-watching countless videos in preparation to paint my cabinets. If I had found this one first, it would have saved me a whole lot of time. This video is excellent and details every little detail you need to know.
What primer and paint do you use
Yes, great job covering the issues that may arise like the sap bleeding through a week later!
THANK YOU!
hello, can i ask you what paint you used. thank you
@@simonebrouillette7611 We used Bear i300 Cabinet paint from Home Depot. Still happy with our choice. We have 7 grandkids that regularly put it to test, and it looks as good as the day we put it down
Love your instructions!!! As a elder lady
and rookie, I appreciate your not assuming ANY basic knowledge.
Starting over the refrigerator is a great first start place. As you said our technique gets better as we go.
so good to know!!! "Most importantly, this project was not hard, it just required a lot of patience."
This is at least the second large project Jeff has helped walked me through with great tips and expert advice. He explains everything in a way that someone at any level can complete their projects the right way. Great video and made my kitchen remodel so much easier. Thanks!
Absolutely no shortcuts, this is how everyone should learn before starting any business. Thanks Jeff
Yes...if you like metal filings mixed in with your paint...then drill at will🤣
@@robertmuckle2985 the metal spreads. It doesn’t go into pieces if you use the correct bit.
I was quoted 4500 for a small kitchen. Found your page and I am so glad! You give me the courage to do it by myself with all your tips and tricks and I am excited to do it by myself now!
Did you do it?
Watching this gave me the confidence to tackle this project on my own. We couldn’t be happier with the results and have Jeff to thank for that. It’s truly a pleasure to watch your videos. Thank you thank you thank you.
I LOVE how thorough you are. I'll probably hire a professional, but after watching you, I'll at least know if they're doing the job correctly.
They won't do it the same, and would likely do a lot of the work off site. It would more likely than not be done with sprayer.

Personally I could not do what he does as I have little patience and want a job done yesterday.
this is like having the world's most helpful handy neighbor. Thank you!!
You make me excited for my projects instead of anxious, you're calm, breathing steady, taking your time but being consistent. Helps my orderliness enjoy the process instead of being so finicky, great teacher in my opinion. I've put up mother of pearl back splash, and grouted it myself with your help! (:
Just wanted to thank you for the guide. My wife and I used your tips in this video to paint our cabinets and transform our kitchen on the cheap. Thanks for all the great videos
happy to help Jacob!
I’ve been a full-time handyman now for six years and I absolutely love all your videos
The BEST renovation video about painting cabinets and professional advices ~ thanks so much
I was a painting contractor for 28 years. I did cabinets a bunch of different ways. You can spray them. You can roll them, or you can brush them. As far as prepping? You can sand them and use a Bin oil based primer, or you can degloss them by applying a liquid sandpaper followed by two coats of paint and primer.
2 minutes in and I'm already overwhelmed.
Me too
Me three... 😫
Me four
Me five
me six!
Such a calm personality. Kept thinking you were going to pull out your fan brush and paint a happy little tree.
Cheers!
LOL 😂
that was very funny.
I'm 46 an i got it for sure
LOL!!! I watched that show with my aunt in my youth.
Hands down this is the BEST home diy channel on here. Such a thorough explanation and demonstration I’ve seen anywhere. Thanks so much!
Thank you anonymous!
CC - love Home Reno
And as a bonus he's from Ottawa, Canada. Whoop! Whoop!
Great job!
Good thought putting mark on top / bottom hinge, I was thinking that before you did it. I’d also mark the door number inside the hinge hole since you have to pull the tape when you paint.
Total professional, makes us look like rookies. Being able to explain it like he does is an art in itself.
What a diamond you are, I am as skint as a church mouse, bought the paint ect, a long time ago, just working myself up to tackling my kitchen, this video has given me, the inspiration and tips I really needed. Thank you so much. x
Oh my gosh I’m so glad I watched this. I’m about to paint my honey oak cabinets white and this has taught me so much. Thank you! You are so skilled!
How did it go? I want to paint my honey oak cabinets white. I’m a beginner.
With each Cabinet I finish, a new experience I have. Years after years of experience with Cabinet Refinish, the conclusion is always perfect. Congratulations, a wonderful job.
Boston, MA.
Best, most thorough cabinet painting video I've seen. Really makes me understand the process of sanding in between. I always hated (and tended to skip) that step on past projects. I get it now. Thanks for sharing your process and tips.
nice man you never hold back any information you are helping everyone to learn from you thank you so much God bless you
Really appreciate it jerry!
That's what I appreciate as well!
I watched this video 3 times, then tackled my kitchen. These tips are invaluable. Thank you!
Recently I was asked to do a family members Kitchen..Thank you for this wealth of expertise. You Proven me correct when I told them it can be done, however TIME and Patience is a must that isn't bought with money spent in a day. Thanks Jeff!
@@HomeRenoVisionDIY thanks for your great information. It will be a great help when I paint my old kitchen.
yea, seems like their is tons of 5min videos but I keep coming back to this video to reference while Im going through the stages of painting.
I agree. Lot's of detail in this video. Exactly what I needed.
I watched your video twice and decided to try my bathroom cabinets and they came out awesome!!! Thank you for the great video and making it seem so simple.
That is awesome!
This is exactly what I've been looking for!! I've been deep in the rabbit hole of research and getting more confused and overwhelmed. This was absolutely perfect and I feel so much more confident. Thank you!!
I love all your videos. You have saved me thousands of dollars from not making mistakes. You have the best videos on RUclips. Thank you. I have a lot of knowledge in the building trades but my knowledge is from years ago and there are so many new products I'm not familiar with. These videos have helped me tremendously.
This is the most detailed cabinet paint video I have seen! Will come back here to do all this when i do my cabinets. Ty!
Thank you, love this guy, such a caring nature, which I appreciate. He's not sloppy, he cares 👍
I love that you are very honest, simple and real. Thank you so much for all your tips, and for taking the time to share you skills and knowledge. I appreciate the help to make it easier and inexpensive for all of us to DIY home projects :)
I love watching Jeff. Thanks for putting out all the information for your average working guy with average skill. Always great content.
I love how my cabinets came out.
well done!
Just finished my cabinets yesterday and I never expected the amount of time and work they would need. Definitely a project! Great video as always with great explanations
But woth it. You probably added a lot of value to the house. Cheers!
Man, I wish I had cabinets that new with that kind of hardware!! Mine are probably from the 70's.
This video and the A-Z painting walls have saved me so much time and confusion! I love that you are doing this and you really seem to enjoy it.
Jeff continues to amaze…a DYI’ers BFF…thx for the thorough topic coverage and tips and tricks…best!
Just bought my first home and I NEED videos like this to DIY my way from a very 80's house to a modern one on a strict budget. Thank you!!!
And thank you for taking the time to explain what you're doing, how you're doing it, why and with what tools. I had felt very overwhelmed until seeing this.
Hi Logan, congrats on the house. I am here to answer questions as you go. Cheers and good luck.
I remodeled and repainted my daughter’s. Cabinets a. Few years ago. Thought everything looked great...until we sat down at the dinner table. I had forgotten to paint underneath the wall cabinets!! Below eye level when standing!😝
Now THAT'S hilarious!! Sounds like something I'd do.
At first, I thought those cutting skills had to be from so much experience. Then you did it left handed and I thought there might be hope for me! Thanks for an awesome video.
The garage restaurant
Your camera is really good! It's easy to see the grains and faint bleed-throughs that you later corrected. Thanks!
This is, I think, the most comprehensive kitchen painting video on the RUclips... Thanks very much buddy 👍 😀
I cannot thank you enough. We have been renovating an older house we just bought and we watch your videos first for any projects. We’re currently painting the cabinets and this was right on time
Cheers! we are glad to help.
You are an amazing teacher. I followed your instructions and did an awesome job on my cabinets.I wish that I could attach before an after photos
Cheers Ryan, I read all the comments and appreciate you letting us know it went well.Welcome to the world of DIY. Cheers!
Who do you recommend for quartz counter tops..?
Woww he is so informative and he is telling everything. Others are just showing how they did, they aren’t explaining anything. Thank you!
Thank you! This is the most informative that I have ever experienced! It has been along time since I have painted cabinets and I use Flotral in my paint but I watched to refresh myself! 👏
Thank you so much for recommending the Dulux Xpert primer! I bought both products to refinish our oak cabinets and wainscoting and it is so good.
Where did you buy the dulux primer?
I learn a lot from you, I'm in a masive renovation in all my house. So I start the kitchen two months ago, and I watch your videos learning how to do it. This weekend I'm going to paint the refrigerator cabinet, so I'm studying your technique.
You’re really cool. I like your energy and professionalism. Thank you for this video. I’m feeling informed and inspired, and weirdly, this long ass video kept me hooked throughout (and that doesn’t really happen for me normally).
My cabinets were flat black.....nasty! I followed your advise . Couldn't get that type of paint here in New Mexico... but was able to get some other good paint ...Sherwin Williams. Some of my family saw the cabinets before and when they saw them later they thought I had paid a professional to install new cabinets! They are so nice! Thanks for all your tutorials!
Glad I could help!
You are my go to guy for all DIY at home because you do it right.
Just finished painting my kitchen cabinets, we are very pleased! Used your video as a guide, made the job much easier! Thank you for showing the way.
Pls ignore the haters, we love your work, it is helpful.
I do, it is funny how people can have such a wide range of opinions. I am trying to help DIY'ers not contractors. they just don';t seem to get it sometimes.
Thank you for this video and the amount of detail!!! I was just quoted $4500 for a 19 door kitchen. I'm ready to paint!
Excellent!
And how did they come out
This is the best tutorial I've seen for painting cabinets. The task doesnt seem as daunting with his instruction. I'm going to paint bathroom cabinetry first to get experience. Thanks!!!!
I've painted many walls and somehow never knew the correct way to paint until now. Thank you for this video you're awesome. New subscriber here 🙋🏽♀️🙋🏽♀️🙋🏽♀️🙋🏽♀️🙋🏽♀️🙋🏽♀️
Your reaction to the stapled-on drawer faces made my day.
This might be the best home improvement video I've watched. I watched the entire video. Thank you so much for all the information. I'll be subscribing and checking out your other videos.
So, I wanted to come here and say THANK YOU! I always had the idea that painting my own cabinets would be such an impossible task to do... but after watching and studying your video like 4 times, I DID IT! and honestly thanks so much to you!
They look like I just replaced my cabinets ✨💕
Glad I could help! Cheers!
Watching this dude makes me so happy and gets me so excited to start doing my own DIY projects.
This Video is so Thorough. He covers everything! Great Job! Thank You
tip:
only on metallic paint cans make 4 holes with a nail in the channel edge of the can so the paint in the edge can go back into the can dripping by itself
I'm such a fan. Watch as much as I can, I use your suggestion when we're doing a projects.
Cheers!
For those of us that live in the U.S. where we can't buy Dulux paint, what would you suggest that we buy for kitchen cabinets?
Dunn Edward's Aristoshield. It some good shit.
I'm about halfway through my kitchen doing this, everything I've experienced has been exactly what you outlined here, such a great video. I keep doing touchups on the doors over and over thinking I should have more coats (doing 3 before hanging) but overall I love it. Dark cherry cabinets painted to modern white with our black granite countertops, can't wait till it's done!
What brand of paint and color (name) are you using?
Our project turned out amazing thanks for this content. We followed this videos instructions exactly and everything turned out amazing! Thank you!!
Peter Corazao my daughter painted her cherry cabinets white and it is beautiful! Just take a chance, it makes the kitchen look twice as big!
Thank you so much. Your video has given me the confidence to try my cabinets which will make a great father/daughter job
I always got a chance to watch you I get a great feeling. What a great men you encarge me to pain my kitchen cabinets thanks bro you have a great way to encarge people to keep positive love. God bless bro you are amazing
After watching this entire video, you’ve given me courage to tackle a smaller project of painting my bathroom vanity. 😊😅
Same 😊
