I am blown away about some of the comments here. People are insanely rude. I'm a new follower and loved it. I'm tired of boring, lifeless, 'to the point' videos where the content actually stinks. You were funny and knowledgeable. How can anyone say anything negative to that? 😱
Just a couple suggestions. Use naphtha to clean off any grease/oils, useing a (red) scotch brite pad and paper towel. Then sand with 320 sandpaper. If you're going over existing paint/finish use BIN PRIMER (shellac primer) let dry for about a day then sand/vaccum before painting. Now you can use paint, and it can look great. However even paint that claims its durable isnt going to hold up in the long run. Cabinets are high use/touch spots. Chips and scratches will start showing up sooner or later. Not to mention if you dont do a good job cleaning and sand/vacuum between coats you risk and uneven and dirty finish risking the paint failing. The alternative to paint is not the most diy friendly but its infinitely better than paint. The alternative is tinted conversion varnish, you can get it at places like Sherman Williams and in any color you want. Now this method requires a little investment, as although it's not "meant" to be brushed its can be brushed on panels and face frames Using a mini roller and 2in brush on the panels (ROLL FIRST THEN USE THE BRUSH TO REMOVE THE TEXTURE FROM THE PANEL) Then use the 2in brush to paint the face frames. It has an incredibly short working time (less than 5 min once applied). This might make it a little harder to apply but so much easier to work around imo. For the doors I would definitely remove them and spray them with the conversion varnish. Now okay I know this is a lot. Probably more than you feel comfortable with, I wont lie and say its super easy but having seen the results of both systems I encourage people to put in the extra time/investment/research and go with conversion varnish. This way your kitchen will look incredible until well after the color you chose has gone out of fashion. Source; its what I do for a living.
One thing I like about your video is that you make it simple. I’ve watched a few cabinet painting videos and they are like 500 steps sanding doors, take doors off, spray guns, pour fillers, more sanding, taping, coat after coat, on and on. I’m thinking after all that work it would be better to just go buy new cabinets. But you made it pretty simple so thanks!
Just want to say thank. I painted my cabinets and didn’t take any doors off ;thx to your vid.) it took me 3 days, and it’s PERFECT. Kinda mad I waited so long.
You had me at dance party! I'm subbing, anybody brave enough to do that show's me you are divested of all ego entanglement. You are an emotionally healthy person.
Yesss!!! Finally a video with dancing and painting : ) Just kidding I appreciate the fact that you painted the cabinets without removing them. I'm all for painting but the entire process of removing, painting , and reinstalling is just to much work for me. My life is to busy for all that, so thank you for sharing this amazing hack!
Finally someone who is doing it without the hassle no need work to take down the cabinet. I was saying to myself" they need to be another way" now u very proven me right. Will try this on cabinet
I've been back and forth on whether or not to take the leap and paint the cabinets. I've read so many Pinterest boards and watched so many videos and they always scared me off. Yours finally convinced me to take the plunge!
Thank you my love! My husband and I built a house two years ago here in southern Illinois. Nothing but cornfields. When we got our kitchen cabinets, I didn’t want to paint them at that time, because we’ve been building for 3 years and I painted the entire two story house, and well, we were tired. I wanted to wait and now is the time. I’m doing a light gray for the main cabinets and I am painting my island a calming blue. I am excited! Thank you for all these tips. We have the same cabinetry. So beautiful. Great video!!
That paint is KEY!! We did our kitchen in that exact paint and it came out flawless. Not only that but after 3 years, they still look like they were done yesterday. They wipe off and they don’t chip. It’s expensive but well worth it.
@Tonya Vanderbilt Meer Did you paint cabinets in your kitchen? I was wondering if you chose a satin finish and if you sealed them. Thanks for your help 😊
Tonya Westmoreland yes we painted our entire kitchen...wish I could attach pictures here to show you. We used satin finish in our kitchen and master bath. Turned out perfect! We did not seal them.

I am painting my cabinets right now! When I am done you should come over and dance with me! Great video! Beautiful work❤️. I am seriously in shock over what people say to someone having a good time! Shameful. Keep doing what you do😘
I've followed her tutorial, used that paint, and that roller cover, with FANTASTIC RESULTS! I have now painted 3 large pieces of furniture with the Benjamin Moore Advance Waterborne Alkyd Paint, 2-3 coats on each piece and I STILL have 1/3 of a gallon left! This is the BEST PAINT. I have also painted another dresser with it, colored "Raspberry Sorbet" with beautiful results. (it did take 3 coats) I have recommended This paint to everyone wanting to paint furniture or cabinets. We will be using it on our Kitchen and bathroom Cabinets very soon. THANK YOU SO MUCH For sharing your time and knowledge!
We are in the middle of painting wood cabinets, we decided to clean, sand, primer, paint. One tip for primer make sure you get enough or do a second coat if needed, its much easier to work with versus the paint. We are also using the Benjamin Moore Advanced primer and satin paint as you did. It's working well so far, about 3-4 days left of doing ours. We are going from a medium darkness wood to white so the primer is very important.
Nice tips. I removed my doors and drawers instead of worrying about taping so much and painting over the hardware. Used a bonding primer and used a clear poly semigloss finish for a slight shine, easier to clean and more durable.
Just want to let you know, I used the tips and the paint you suggested in this video for my own (bathroom) cabinets and also for the hallway doors, and they turned out AWESOME!! Thank you for the great suggestions and for this video!!
I LOVE Green Frog tape!! I buy the 1.8 in width. I have taped every trim around windows, doors front and back, base trim near floors. That's a lot of tape, but well worth it. I'm finally down to last trim in kitchen. House is 2300 sf. I first painted ALL walls inside then worked on trim. Fortunately we were removing carpet upstairs and had wood floors downstairs which I removed all 1/4 round and replaced with new. New vinyl plank flooring upstairs in 2 baths and laundry and new base trim and 1/4 rounds in those rooms. I'll be repainting cabinets in those rooms and replacing countertops, all this I'm doing as a stay at home mom, so ladies, know that it can be done. I've saved thousands of $$ in labor costs. Started in october, most done by Feb. Took a break, now finishing up. Take your time with the frog tape and you will get great results. I really like Benjamin Moore paint, and can't wait to try the new alkoid for cabinets.
@@melodycooper8151 no I didn’t sand. I used a paint plus primer. It’s been a couple years since I painted them and I’m still happy with how they turned out.
My sad little kitchenette needs some cheering up. Wish my budget covered more than paint but this house is mine and paid for! Thanks for your instruction and especially what paint to use. You do a thorough job without turning your home into a three ring circus.
I love that paint! I've used it on furniture, a bedroom set I did is still perfect after 10 years. I used a McGuire's polishing kit on it, designed for polishing cars, to bring it up to an almost glossy finish.

This Advanced paint by Benjamin Moore is the key. It self levels and that means it doesn't show brush marks. I have nowhere to lay down cabinets or even hang them. I hate poly. Used it in Montana to go over oak cabinets and it dripped so much if I did not take off the doors and lay them down I had to sand and sand the drips out. Hey, Girl dance in the kitchen! We need to have some fun! I am painting the brown floors too with Home floor paint. That is a couple of videos too!
how did the floors turn out? I'm experimenting with rustoleum floor coating (a short hall and small bath) but want some kind of visual texture for the very large kitchen/dining area...maybe something like a rag roller of 2 similar colors over the base...otherwise every drip and crumb will show!

Our cabinets are the same color as these before, and I hate them. Hey Midlife Girl - if I were you ...I would make a whole new video just dancing - say...about 15 minutes long with the title :" How to paint counter tops !" Hehehe ;))
Your dance party = my happy dance corner lol. Also I LOVE that color. I painted my bathroom cabinets and completely botched the job. I think I’ll give some of these hacks a try. Great info!
thank you for this video. i wanted to redo my cabinets cause they are way to dark for my liking and it makes my kitchen feel so small. should be fun with my 2 young kids around lol
Love this video. Your kitchen looks just like mine. I was planning on paying someone to paint my cabinets but now I might just do it myself and save a few thousand dollars. Thank you !
This was the easiest video to follow. Incredibly informational. I feel confident in trying to paint my cabinets. I do have a QUESTION: Your deglosser, it looked quiet wet when you were cleaning off the cabinets. How do you make sure its all off before you start painting? Wet towel & then pass a clean one over it?
Thanks for sharing!!! I absolutely LOVE your dance intro! You’re my kind of person!😊😆 I am in the process of painting our kitchen so will definitely use your method when painting the cabinets! Loved the after look but the wood was soo pretty. 😢Anyways, Thanks for sharing!
Advance is my favorite trim paint when using a brush. Nothing levels as well, but if you're on a budget, the Behr Alkyd comes close but does not harden as quickly as Advance--although that's not saying a lot because even Advance is very slow to harden (30 to 45 days). More importantly, Advance will be substantially harder than Behr Alkyd after 3 days where you don't have to go to the extent of cordoning off the entire kitchen if you have kids that like to test the paint. Advance is definitely harder than most of your typical trim (and certainly wall) paints after the full cure time, but I wouldn't say it's anywhere near the durability of a commercial cabinet finish in terms of hardness and durability. You wouldn't paint a guitar with advance for example as it's just nowhere near as tough and hard as (say) a nitro cellulose lacquer. So if you're on a budget and you have a lot of time on your hands (can afford to wait 16 hours between coats) and you don't have to worry about kids/pets scratching it for the first 30 to 45 days, then this technique will be your best bet with a brush and a roller. BUT... if you really want a commercial-looking finish, then you'll haver to invest in a spray gun, professional finishes, and a LOT of practice. Even Cabinet Coat CC65 is far superior to Advance in terms of speed (6 hours between coats, or even 4 in my experience), no need for a primer (if you pre-clean and sand), overall hardness, and that factory look when sprayed correctly. It hardens a LOT quicker too. Even the next day it can feel quite hard and smooth as if it's fully cured, but gets even hard over the next 5 to 7 days. The flatness and smoothness is just mind-blowing if you do it right. If you roll/brush a panel and hold it side by side with a professional finish (and put your glasses on if you're above 50 lol), you will see and feel a night an day difference. If you're coming from dingy old oak cabinets... well then this technique will get you something that is definitely a lot better that what you started with.
Hi Cindy. Your steps and supplies list are making me believe it’s possible to paint my cabinets with nice paint, and not have to resort to using a kit! Benjamin Moore has so many gorgeous colors too! I have cheap-y honey okay cabinets with noticeable grain. Do I need to use grain filler if I’m using the paint and primer you recommend? Thanks so much for sharing your knowledge!
Thank you so much for all your advice and ideas. I've been thinking about doing my kitchen cabinets for a long time now, but after watching you I'm ready to go for it. I have subscribed to your channel too now. Have a great weekend
Spotless white shirt ☑️ Gorgeous kitchen ☑️ Refer to brand new towels from Ikea as "old rags"☑️ I'm fairly certain that kitchen cost more than my whole house! No hate! Just cracking up that I found this while searching for budget friendly ways to update my ancient kitchen.
I've been wanting to paint my tiny kitchen's cabinets for many years now but have always been put off by the amount of work involved, including the notion that you absolutely must take off the doors to do a proper job, which now I know is not necessary after seeing this video. I love how accessible you've made this task! I can't wait to tackle this in my own home. Great job, thank you.
Congratulations you are the first person to paint cabinets that I’ve seen who uses a velour roller but you might not be aware that Sherwin Williams colors to go do not contain some of the additives that their regular paint contains such as bonding agents. Just because it comes in a quart size bottle doesn’t mean they don’t make it in massive quantities and they are able to sell it so cheaply because it’s not true paint, but your work looks great very professional looking, I’ve been painting for 40 years so I know.
I only used the Color to Go as a base for making a chalk paint/primer. I'd never use it as regular paint for the reason you stated...no bonding. And I love velour rollers! Thanks for the kind comments!
Just found this and am painting my RV cabinets. Thank you for saying you don’t have to take off the doors to paint!! I do need to paint the hinges and taped off and will spray paint black. Replacing the handles.
Thanks! You totally gave me hope about painting my kitchen cabinets! Especially that I don't have to take them off! One question....what if the cabinets have been stained and then coated with a clearn polyurathene (sp?) coating? Do I need to strip them or something?? Or do I just start with the degreaser/deglosser? So excited to maybe finally do this!!!
Great tips! I wanted to paint my cabinets but was intimidated. My bathroom cabinets are kinda rough but I but the BM Advance really does cover well(3 coats where I gouged the wood with my sander) and doesn’t show roller marks. I sanded, primed and painted. Big improvement!
Nice! I love the way your kitchen came out. Also, I like the way took you time ri explain everything and the demonstrations. Gave me hope I can paint my kitchen cabinets.
Just finished painting my kitchen cabinets with BM alkyd Advance paint.Amazing paint..loved the results.Any tips on how to clean paint smudges on my linoleum floor ?Great video 🌻
It's amazing paint for sure! Not sure about the paint on linoleum....might be a question for someone at a paint store (specifically those who sell the Ben Moore paint). Thanks for stopping by!
I subbed! Thank you for taking the time to create this video and explain everything in detail. And also thank you for just being YOU in your videos, that part is also so important and I subbed instantly.
First of all....the dance is cute; you be YOU! Loved the video, although I have already purchased a high dollar cabinet paint from Lowes. The employee who helped me said that no primer was needed and that this cabinet paint was extremely durable; "scratch resistant and doesn't need primer". I'm thinking the cleaning with a deglosser and slight scuff is still in order before the primer. My cabinets are currently painted in a dark yellow to gold satin, antiqued with a golden brown color. I do not think they put a clear finish coat over them d/t all the chips around every door knob pull. My pulls are identical to yours in an antique bronze color. I plan to paint the cabinets in a grey/silver color; adjacent walls are Window Pane green and Rainwashed; both Sherwin Williams paints sold at Lowes. Felt bold going with greens for the main part of the house but every thing I see is that greens are the new neutral and I'm done with flat grey...I'll let you know how the cabinets turn out. Any thoughts? Thank you so much and keep on dancing your happy dance!
Thanks for this amazing tutorial. I followed your instructions to a tee and they look beautiful. Wish I could add a pic. One thing, however, is the velour rollers did not roll on smoothly so I just got a special brush for cabinet painting and it did the trick. Wish I knew what I was doing wrong with the velour. Would have loved a bit of video of your actually painting. ☺️👏🏻👍🏼. Thanks again.
I know Sonia Miller of JunkMonkeyPant.com Uses the Valore rollers for their truck paint that they make. Which I use their their chalk paint on a lot of projects. I haven't watch this video yet. came for the painting. stayed for the dance party :)
You're welcome!
Lol, same!
Aka Patience g
Thank you for this video. It made me feel so comfortable and confident doing my cabinets on my own. thank you!
Love how u didn’t remove the doors.
This is great information. CLosing on a house that has lawn green cabinets and I want the Riverway color. Excited to do this as soon as I close!
I never thought of leaving the doors on! Thanks for that tio
If i can get away with leaving them on, I do! Less work!
I haven't even watched the entire video, but that dance sold me. I love it!
Looks beautiful! Do you seal the paint with polyurethane or anything??
Our cabinets are the same color as these before, and I hate them. They were brand new when we moved into our house 4 years ago and I can't see getting rid of them but I've been planning to paint them someday so they will be more my style. I just gotta convince the husband! This is the best tutorial I've seen on painting cabinets and DH is almost convinced after watching it. 😉
Best Video I Have watched For painting Cabinets (& believe me, I have watched A LOT) I am finally confident enough to Tackle the Project 😊
Wish me luck, this is my 1st semi big project DIY.
Thanks so much for videos, you are a God send, Doll💜
This is the first vid from you I `ve watched and I actually got what I came here for! Learned a lot about cabinet painting AND some new dance moves!
Then I read some of the comments! What is wrong with people? One has no time for dancing? That comment was posted a few days ago.....all we have now is TIME!!!
Hey Midlife Girl - if I were you ...I would make a whole new video just dancing - say...about 15 minutes long with the title :" How to paint counter tops !" Hehehe ;))
Flusenmonster ✌︎︎✌︎︎✌︎︎
🤣😂🤣😂🤣
Your dance party = my happy dance corner lol. Also I LOVE that color. I painted my bathroom cabinets and completely botched the job. I think I’ll give some of these hacks a try. Great info!
I just bought unfinished cabinets. After watching your video, I am more confident about painting them now
thank you for this video. i wanted to redo my cabinets cause they are way to dark for my liking and it makes my kitchen feel so small. should be fun with my 2 young kids around lol
Since kitchens are high traffic area, do you ever seal the paint? Use a polyacrylic or something on top?
Advance paint needs no top coat.
Instantly like once the dance party started!!! Love it!,
Same
Thank you for the awesome tips. I had never heard of velour rollers, but will definitely try them on my bathroom cabinet project.
Love the original color
It's awesome that we live in a world where everyone gets to make their homes appeal to their own style. Thanks for participating!
Love this video. Your kitchen looks just like mine. I was planning on paying someone to paint my cabinets but now I might just do it myself and save a few thousand dollars. Thank you !
The dance party was everything!!!!!
Glad to help! As far as the deglosser…you wipe it on and let it dry. You can start in with the primer as soon as it’s completely dry.
Love it!! Cabinets came out great. Thanks for sharing ❤
This is excellent. Thank you for taking the time to make this. I'm totally buying this paint brand tomorrow!
Hooray! Such great paint! Thanks for taking time to watch!
@@ACottageGirl I followed your tips exactly and my cabinets are gorgeous! Thank you again!
Mary Pinheiro Oh I’m SO happy to hear it! ❤️❤️❤️
Thank you so much ! One question - with that paint I don’t need a top coat ? Wow you make me feel like I can do this ! Thanks again
Tbh I loved the color of the cabinets before. The blue color is very pretty too though. Loved your dancing!
Thanks for sharing. I loved the wood before.... but to each their own 😉
You're welcome! Thanks for stopping by!
Wow. Beautiful job Sarah. FYI. Keep dancing 💃
Fantastic tutorial. Very clear and easy to understand. Thank you!
Looks awesome! Any recommendations for painting over an already painted cabinet?
Thank you so much for all your advice and ideas. I've been thinking about doing my kitchen cabinets for a long time now, but after watching you I'm ready to go for it. I have subscribed to your channel too now. Have a great weekend

Refer to brand new towels from Ikea as "old rags"☑️
I'm fairly certain that kitchen cost more than my whole house!
I was always told that you have to sand the poly finish off any surface. Does the Deglosser do the trick?
You did a fabulous job!! This is the best cabinet painting video I have seen!!! Love the dance party as well!!!
I have same situation, same question ❓
@@businessdirectory4406 I'm still waiting for her reply
Great tips! I wanted to paint my cabinets but was intimidated. My bathroom cabinets are kinda rough but I but the BM Advance really does cover well(3 coats where I gouged the wood with my sander) and doesn’t show roller marks. I sanded, primed and painted. Big improvement!
OK, so I'm so curious as to a sealer? Would you not want to put a sealant like a polyacrylic or some sealer over the paint?
That is an absolutely beautiful completed project. Thanks for sharing your knowledge and tips.
I liked you already when you started dancing 😂
Me too!! More people should do that!! 😊❤
Great tutorial! I am thinking about painting the oak cabinets in my new home as we don't plan to remodel for at least 4-5 years
Thank you so much for this video! Do you use the velour roller after you brush on the primer?
J
Thank you! Just got a house and want to start with small things and learn. Appreciate you!
I subbed! Thank you for taking the time to create this video and explain everything in detail. And also thank you for just being YOU in your videos, that part is also so important and I subbed instantly.
Your kitchen cabinets look stunning! Thanks for the awesome DIY hack! 🎨👏
Silly question...when you use the roller to smooth everything out, do you put paint on the roller?
Tammy Crozier Yes, but I roll most of it off. There’s usually enough paint on it from rolling the other surfaces smooth. 😊
Awesome tips, I’m thinking of painting my kitchen cupboards, looks great .
I subbed because of the dance party and the fact that you didn’t remove the doors.
I have a cedar ceiling and people have suggested I paint it, if it was pine maybe I would, but cedar NO WAY! The patina over the years is amazing.
Do you paint the inside compartment of the cabinets? I loved the video. Thank you for posting.
On this kitchen, I didn't paint the inside of the cabinets. On some I do, depends on the client. Thanks for watching!
I am so impressed with how you respond to crappy negative comments. You have such a kind heart ❤I wouldn't be able to be so kind lol 😹
Wow -- excellent tutorial. You are a very good teacher. So glad I watched this before starting our project. Many thanks!
But you might wanna also check out Sonya and see what is happening there also. So then I see what's going on with this one. Good luck
Sanding in between coats will give a smooth finish
What kind of "special brush" did you use? Tia
