I like the process you showed very clearly and one thing I learned is if I wanted to make something using the white and grain...i would not use the black pigment since it is a strong contrast.. but rather a medium gray pigment maybe and i think that will give the cabinets a beautiful and subtle antique look! Great video Konstantin. The blue cabinet color with the black came out really nice. The white was not really my taste but if I could recommend you show the cabinets facing directly the camera lens instead of at an angle and maybe much closer so the effect is even more pronounced. Hey buddy. From my experience it’s not the best to do so. - if you really need to get rid of the grain - I’d replace the doors with new smooth mdf doors and fill the grain on the cabinet boxes (just apply grain filler or wipe on white filler and sand flat )

I like to grain fill oak using aquacoat. The grain filling gives you a very smooth finish. It will never look like clear maple, but it will look very updated, and you'll only know it's a refinished oak cabinet when you are really up close because the grain does not pop out.
@KonstantinUdalov I don't know ow what you mean by brutally filled. Aqua Coat is very thin. You apply it and then sand it. It closes the pores of the oak and help build up between ridges. When you spray over the filled door, it looks very smooth. I did this in my old house. I could have purchased maple doors for $40 each or just put in a little work to keep the doors out of the landfill. Quite honestly, it's about the time and effort you are willing to put in.
@@AP-ph7hf wooden doors can be recycled not thrown in the garbage . time/vs money it's probably the same +/- but new shakers maple or mdf are made to be smooth. Oak is oak.
@smon8497 so aquaculture fills the pores so that you get paint that lays flat where there is grain. It is not a brutal fill. It is applied with a thin flexible piece of plastic. Try it some time. It will give you the professional results you aren't achieving because your preparation is lacking.

What about krud cutter? I think that’s what it’s called? For cleaning off tacky mess and grease. Also this was a super helpful video. I’ve been wondering if I am hiding the grain when I paint the oak cabinets in my kitchen. I feel confident in letting that grain pop 🥰
I always add the hardener . But we have the whole Idustrial set up with the spray booth and air mask. For home use I would recommend using 2 component products due to the safety concerns

It was blue navy as far as I remember. For the primer I used envirolak t 9000. For the topcoat I used Cic satin sheen single component polyurethane water-Born . And it was was Milesi glaze.

I’d suggest a higher sheen for the base colour: I used 20. Top coat sheen doesn’t effect anything. Just your preference. I like 10 sheen. 20 or 5 is good too, to remove the glaze I used 220 or fine sponge

@@KonstantinUdalov Yes, Deb or Debbie. That's ok, its mixing paint with water, painting on then wiping back. The paint left behind allows grain to show with some color. Same as whitewash, pickling, I think. Tan paint is just painting with a tan colored paint. That you showed with a different color. . Thanks for the reply! 😊
That is a heck of a lot of work.... I'm in deep dodo because I have 150 drawers and doors to do, plus all the cabinets themselves... what are your thoughts about sandblasting the cabinets but using soda? The sand gun is cheap, you can rent a compressor and it will get in every knock and cranny??? What are your thoughts???

I live in Canada and have been trying to purchase glaze for my cerusing project, but it's no longer available. Also, the only glaze I'm familiar with is difficult to work with for cerusing anyway. Hey J . absolutely! =) We have richelue in canada that has ICA waterbased glaze and any colour CNL pigments. - you get the glaze (or aging agent - they call it ) and any colourant you need ( CNL waterbased ICA) mix it together and there you go. Also depending on where exaclty in Canada you live - there's other polyurethane distributers that must have the dry glaze in stock
This is awesome. Questions: we painted our cabinets ages ago. We can see there's grain, but we aren't sure they're oak. Does it matter? Also, do we do the same process for the boxes and panels? Thanks for such a detailed video. One last Q: do you have a preferred stripping method for DIYers?
Hey there ☺️👋 if there’s nice deep grain that should work even if it’s not oak. Stripping is tricky . Very harmful stuff. For diy I wouldn’t recommend it at all. In the shop we use “aircraft stripper”

Products used in this video are water based and are as follows: Primer was Envirolak 1 component polyurethane primer Top coat was Centurion CIC Polyurethane 1 component. Water borne glaze was from Milesi. Clear top coat was Envirolak 1 Component Clear Poly
We have kitchen cabinets that are about 20 years old that were updated installed by previous owner. The cabinets are higher end and structures are good condition and have some sort of baked on paint, very smooth. But it is chipping off and is a hideous plum color. I have no idea how well this will work. I hate to make a mess and then just have to buy all new cabinets in the end.
Hi Graph. Ig the doors are smooth - this technique won't work. I'd suggest getting new doors and repainting the body of the cabinets - it'd be a lot less than new cabinets
Very nice! Just a question, is the ceruse look done only on doors, or is it done on side of the cabinets and trims around the door. Also, I noticed that sides and trims have less grainy look compared to doors.
It would definitely work on the frames as well. My rails have less grain either because I worked less with the wire brush or it’s just the rails had less grain in it
Would this work out with slab cabinets w/ beveled edge? Mine were painted white and hate it and this looks easier than stripping/staining them. They are the cheap wood cabinets but want to refinish until we can replace them.
what about maple cabinets that are smooth (from the late 90's), they are a light maple color. do you have a video on how to get them updated? And also, is this video still up to date? Or has this white and blue with the oak wood-grain showing gone away by now (11 months later), or would I still be good to get my smooth maple cabinets changed to these colors, and would that still be good in Sept. 2023? Thank you for the comment :-) this colour trend is still there, however, on maple cabinets being very smooth, this green piping technique wouldn’t work, for smooth maple I would just go with plain colour like blue, gray or white
1) What’s a replacement for a professional blower? Can I use a wet rag and dry rag? 2) what about the other side? Do you do all the coats on one then the other, or a coat on each side with dry time in between?
Might want to use a soda blaster to get into the crevices which would also clean off any grease. I've got a 40 lb. soda blaster from harbor freight which I might use for this...problem is that would have to be used outside inside of a small tent to keep the run off from killing your grass and other plants. A whole set of kitchen cabinets might be best handled by hiring the stripping out to a place that does dry ice or other media types blasting.
This particular one is made for sanding. Very easy to sand. But there’s an oil like glaze - that one you can wipe off. I’m not a fan of those because of the adhesion problem that it creates. When you wipe off you can’t really sand after - if you do you can make the wiped off gaze disappear , but with the sand off glaze you create a good sanded surface ready to accept next layer (clear coat)

The new grain color on blue look super cool, i rather fill my oak and get a smooth finish but its nice to have options.
If you like filled look better mdf or new maple doors is a more cost effective option

I painted my mismatched oak cabinets blue; it hides both tomato sauce and coffee drip stains.
Black wrought iron hardware goes quite nicely with this.

You always see oak cabinets that were brutally filled 😎🤓 I saw ~ 100 kitchens like that and did ~ 20 myself .

Just keep the paint thin and it’ll keep the grain open when paint dries

Wood will have a spotty uneven look (compared to flat sanding)
Grain won’t be as open as it is with wire brushing .

Water borne glaze was from Milesi.
Clear top coat was Envirolak 1 Component Clear Poly

We have kitchen cabinets that are about 20 years old that were updated installed by previous owner. The cabinets are higher end and structures are good condition and have some sort of baked on paint, very smooth. But it is chipping off and is a hideous plum color.
I have no idea how well this will work. I hate to make a mess and then just have to buy all new cabinets in the end.
Hi Graph. Ig the doors are smooth - this technique won't work. I'd suggest getting new doors and repainting the body of the cabinets - it'd be a lot less than new cabinets
I may have missed this in the tutorial. Any specific things to keep in mind on the type of paint to use after using the primer?
1 component polyurethane is the best.
Any brand you can find in your area. My best are: sivam, Sirca, envirolak, cic, Ica, Milesi, il a, Renner.

Very nice! Just a question, is the ceruse look done only on doors, or is it done on side of the cabinets and trims around the door. Also, I noticed that sides and trims have less grainy look compared to doors.
Sides would have less grain because is not real wood
It’s real wood all around 😄 I just might’ve made a bit less wire brush work
It would definitely work on the frames as well.
My rails have less grain either because I worked less with the wire brush or it’s just the rails had less grain in it

Would this work out with slab cabinets w/ beveled edge? Mine were painted white and hate it and this looks easier than stripping/staining them. They are the cheap wood cabinets but want to refinish until we can replace them.
If they are made out of oak - than this technique is possible. If not - I’d recommend to replace it .
what about maple cabinets that are smooth (from the late 90's), they are a light maple color. do you have a video on how to get them updated? And also, is this video still up to date? Or has this white and blue with the oak wood-grain showing gone away by now (11 months later), or would I still be good to get my smooth maple cabinets changed to these colors, and would that still be good in Sept. 2023? Thank you for the comment :-) this colour trend is still there, however, on maple cabinets being very smooth, this green piping technique wouldn’t work, for smooth maple I would just go with plain colour like blue, gray or white

Not really . All that’s needed is good bite - and we achieve that with aggressive sanding
1) What’s a replacement for a professional blower? Can I use a wet rag and dry rag?
2) what about the other side? Do you do all the coats on one then the other, or a coat on each side with dry time in between?

2) I do backs first fully finished , mask them off and then do the fronts
Are we supposed to let the Gel dry and sand it or just put it on let it sit for a few minutes then wipe it off
Hey brother . Depending on the type of glaze you use. What type / brand do you use ?
Might want to use a soda blaster to get into the crevices which would also clean off any grease. I've got a 40 lb. soda blaster from harbor freight which I might use for this...problem is that would have to be used outside inside of a small tent to keep the run off from killing your grass and other plants. A whole set of kitchen cabinets might be best handled by hiring the stripping out to a place that does dry ice or other media types blasting.

Can I do this paint skill (change color ) on the cabinet door which has a thin wood layer glued on the surface ?

Is sanding glaze off a must or can you just wipe it off with rags ?
This particular one is made for sanding. Very easy to sand. But there’s an oil like glaze - that one you can wipe off. I’m not a fan of those because of the adhesion problem that it creates. When you wipe off you can’t really sand after - if you do you can make the wiped off gaze disappear , but with the sand off glaze you create a good sanded surface ready to accept next layer (clear coat)
