I had never listened to Leo P beyond a few clips here and there (for no particular reason, just didn't care). Seeing him talk though, I can tell this guy really knows music and has a wide range of references from which he draws. I'm impressed!
From what I heard he is referenced to as a musical genius. Yeah he likes to do a show but from what I read in the comments on his videos and talked to a couple of friend who play sax, what he does and we found funny - nobody else can do, because they don't even understand the technique behind it, let alone jumping and dancing around
@@still34u On sax, those who work for a on overtones on can do what leo P does (at least isolated, using it in context takes even more practice). Most of his "terrible sounds" are overtone runs, ie he plays low A and then adjusts his throat and mouth position to bring out different overtones and multiphonics (multiple notes sounding at the same time). Not saying he isn't an incredible player, he's a musical genius. However, there's no "magic" in his techniques for making strange noises and ANY sax player can learn it in time. It's just down to mastering overtone techniques. I had been playing sax for 8 years and it took me about a year to become comfortable with altissimo and overtone techniques to be able to make those high squeaks and nasty multiphonic overtone slides. Of course, I am far from his overall musical level, but it's not "magic" that "nobody else can do"! ANYONE can learn it.
I've never heard anyone play the sax like this guy. I just discovered his Too many Zoos vids and cant stop listening and watching. What a cool and individual dude. Thank you for sharing your talent.
Not sure what impresses me more, your ability to educate, your performances or your looks. Great all around entertainment. Putting Sax back into limelight❤❤
As a fellow Sax player, I think I'm safe to say Leo P's style is as innovative as one Ornithologist from back in the day. Different genre, off course, but so far out of the norm that the comparison is relevant in my ears. ✨🎷✨.
Leo keeps surprising me! First I saw the subway vids and that was cool. He has an uncanny command of his instrument. Like there's no limit to the sounds he gets out of his bari. Then the Lucky Chops he's a showman and a serious player as well. Then at the BBC Proms we see the depth of his musicianship and knowledge of the great Charles Mibgus' music. Here we see him as a selfless teacher to the young Grace Kelly, who is something on her alto as well. We'd love to hear more of the two together.
Grace is no amateur. Although she plays one for this. She very accomplished and a pro. Really enjoy the many variety of content that they do together and solo. Who are the Jackssses Down Voting This???
Imma steal this for bass guitar. Also, major third over a Phrygian scale is sometimes called Phrygian dominant (among other things). It's the fifth mode of harmonic minor.
@@franklundjensen4076 But, Jimi Hendrix was mostly self-taught. His insight into his guitar technique and harmonies would not be nearly as clear as Leo (who has obviously had some musical training). Jimi, likely, wouldn't know the exact scale degrees and (theoretically named) chords of his own music.
Interesting how busking contributed to Leo's musical development and innovative approach. Nice combo and great to hear such talented players share ideas, but in a way that is accessible to a wide range of musicians, with tips for more advanced players. Refreshing lesson....look forward to more!
I totally agree.. Clemons was a simplified player all about huge, grandiose melody. I loved his playing so much. I also dug be-bob, jazz and rock players. But Clemons played such beautiful music. On “Jungleland” he’s iconically epic as he encapsulated New York and all it’s romance, adventure, fear and sorrow. Leo P is his own style. A great player for sure, soon to be legendary!
glad i came across this clip. i'm really liking this guy more and more. he is more than few great riffs and fancy footwork. someone i can definitely learn from.
You know what Grace reminds me of? You know how when you're a kid and you are enthusiastic about things because you haven't learned 'it's not cool to get excited'? And how later on when you 'grow up' you have all this other stuff on your mind that kind of makes you less fun, more introspective, more world weary? When she performs, I see the kid inside jamming on the sax without a care in the world with no self consciousness or holding back. She never let go of her inner kid and that makes her awesome.
They have surprised me because apart from being great performers, you are two simple people and you share what you know, admirable guys !!!! Thank you!!!
I have always been a fan of baritone sax and you sir are the king. I cannot get enough ever. The vibe groovin power and originality is phenomenal. I'm going to be a forever Fanboy. I love you man
Thank you, this is great, as I want to start playing a lot more of this style. I think adding the natural 3 to the phrygian scale makes it akin to the fifth mode of a harmonic minor scale
Its been three years bow that i’m playing sax alto and you are a reason why i persevered in that instrument! You really inspired me and everyday i listen to your songs. You are my idols, please continue your amazing job! Love you guys! I have a question, what kind of reeds do you use? Sry for the mistakes (i speak french)
I would assume a vandoren bc they are sponsored, but as a fellow single Reed musician I would suggest to find your own sound and experiment with different reeds and thicknesses to match your mouthpiece, style of music, and personal preference
Great lesson man! I'm a guitar player but I really dig your playing. I too love the Phrygian sound, even more so I love the Phrygian Dominant sound, being the 5th mode of Harmonic minor, love that b2 and natural 7 combination!
I just saw the video from de Subway and I think it's the vbest music improvissation ?ve seen in many years. It's unique, it's original, and the idea of playing while interacting with the enviroment it's absolutely fantastic. Wish you can continue with this project, by adding new ideas, and new songs, becasuse this music makes me feel REALLY GOOD. :) Thank you ;)
leo you are the best musician im i seen in much time im really loves your shows you are blessed , and grace are very good couple for you in your shows she sounds very good and have a goog image and ritm
It's a squealy or a squeak but on such a low pitched instrument it doesn't quite make your ears bleed like it would on a soprano or a clarinet. Blow a regular even note with whatever reed instrument you play. While playing that note move your tongue high in the back, low in the front, and adjust the tongue closer or farther from the reed to make it chirp like that. Think about vowel sounds with your tongue and you're playing but making your tongue into a Hhhhhhh shape, high in back, low in front. Just play long tones while making different vowel shapes with your tongue and throat and you can get all kinds of wild sounds out of single reeds.
I didn’t know Leo could play and sit at the same time. I thought he had to dance to play! 😆
umean ADHD?
@@jakem5731 have you seen his full brasshouse - moanin' performance?
@@ItsFonky1567 maybe....
I think they had to tie him down on the seat
True
Behind the showman is a extremely talented musician.
Leo is a boss
Well yes
And a buttload of hours in the practice room!
heck ya there is!! AND the Show Woman! Tawk bout' a little ball of FIRE!!
Behind the musician is an extremely talented showman, too!

My understanding was that he was a classically trained clarinetist... so yes
You can hear that in his playing
From what I heard he is referenced to as a musical genius. The man played infront of a orchestra symphony, he is the best of the best with the instrument.
Leo is way beyond just a musican.
A hell of a teacher as well and extremely educated too.
A very smart, talented man.
Interesting observing Grace as an eager student. She’s an absolutely insane musician in her own way and style. 🌟
Totally. I'd love to see a video of Grace teaching her style. Grace and Leo really complement each other's style.
"I like to just play it as fast as i can" -Leo P

you guys are having sax, i can tell.
Oh yeah they sure are having SAX . Pho sho.

Go to their too many zooz RUclips channel, Leo has another talking video
They make the best duo. They're so different yet somehow get along 😭
‘So cool. Grace is a huge star, and and she took a lesson.
Not sure what impresses me more, your ability to educate, your performances or your looks. Great all around entertainment. Putting Sax back into limelight❤❤
This was great. So much of what Leo does just seems other-worldly. It's nice to have it broken down into an exercise.
This is the most chill I have ever seen Leo

Sounds like Sons of Kemet
I always love messing around with the phrygian scale when I improv, really had not thought of creating lines with it.
It's a cool sounding mode, but my personal favorite from the harmonic series is the super locrian double flat seventh scale :)
High five buddy... Thanks for the insight no one asked for
The bassline to Gloria (by Laura Branigan) is all octaves if you need some practice material
Love to see artists sharing like this. Can you imagine how music might have evolved if Jimi Hendrix did breakdown vids?!
Perfect comparison! To me Leo is to sax what hendrix was to guitar!
