I’ve been a fan of his since 2006 and he is constantly pushing the envelope of what being an artist is. His music fully encapsulates the struggles of life and the love and loss that comes with it. He came up studying jazz, but has since moved the music in new directions. Great player and great writer. 🎺

      Oldschool drummers (Krupa days) made their own tempo, and the band either carried on with them, or got lost. But the drummers usually were good enough that they'd bring the band all together in tightness.
      Modern drummers have the advantage of having access to a "click track" in their ear (if they want it). Hence why some drummers can get such a "machine" rhythm going.
      Although, I suspect very few jazz drummers ever need or use one.

He is taking *very* frequent and deep breaths. The fact that someone can do that and not pass out is pretty amazing. That short breathing technique contributes a lot to this performance, really.

    • @ApplePi._.
      @ApplePi._. 2 года назад +26

      Idk, I am a tenor and all so I respect that dancing part I could never do but like
      I am only a freshman and idk how low a works and all which I think he plays here idk but for me it is quite easy to take a breath between those notes, especially because he doesn't need to take deep breaths because that would be worse for him.
      You see, when you take deeper breaths like that in between notes, your body needs you to inhale again for oxygen and most times if you have deep breaths there, you're going to end up with too much air and you will not be able to exhale properly which will affect his body and his head too much.
      Not saying I am better, just wanted to point out a few facts I believe and I am up for a disproof
      Edit: although it is entirely possible that the extra air would go to helping him move, considering that I never play while moving like that so I wouldn't know 0.0

    Leo is out of this world!!! I was at a party given by one of Leo's dad's friends about 10+ years ago. Leo hadn't "broken" yet, he was still in High School (performing arts charter school, of course) --- Leo's dad is a musician, brought Leo along, it was a jam party.
    Leo took the whole show.
    And it wasn't like he was trying to show off, it was just that his playing was so out of this world, the rest of us were just shaking our heads, as Leo pushed the Jam so far out there musically.... I said to my wife that night, "This guy has a serious future if he plays his cards right" Look at him now.

    I never heard of Leo till I caught this. So impressed with him as a showman. That Bari is heavy, & he tosses it around like a toy. Mingus' Moanin is serious music, and he done the great one proud. The orchestra is huge - the classics crowd isn't used to swinging. Most important, the audience dug it and that opens minds to jazz and Mingus. Leo had a vision and he paid his dues. He's arrived. Update: Rock jazz? Leo makes sax - bari no less - cool.

    i was so captivated by his dance and skill i didn't even notice until now, that sax has seen a lot of use. The finish is scratched in more places than it isn't. Just goes to show that you don't need some pristine shiny new instrument to make awesome music, just a quality instrument.

    • @tomerschubert2095
      @tomerschubert2095 4 месяца назад +1

      The more worn down the finish on a horn, the better the sound. Especially true on saxophones. Can’t be on purpose tho, gotta be from many years of use, otherwise it’s cheating
