Man, the drummer was absolutely on POINT throughout the whole concert. Even corrected the tempo issue in the beginning of Moanin' without making it too noticeable. A true beast!
I like this commemt because not alot of people give enough credit to the drummer of a concert because they, along with the bass line, are responsible for keeping the tempo so the performers are in time. Without them, everyone would have to rely too heavily on the conductor and look at their music a lot less.
I saw him in concert yesterday and it was very entertaining. He’s definitely a wild guy, it was crazy. Best part was legitimately seeing him dress up as Ash Ketchum and play the Pokémon theme with Grace Kelley🤣
Can't call out an MVP in this one. Christian and Leo were certainly showcased but the overall talent here is ubiquitous and profoundly phenomenal. The composing, singing, performance.....just not enough words. I will watch this one over and over.

I have selected several segments to replay for my six-year-old grandson. I can’t wait. He loves life and adores music. His place on the autism spectrum has given him an amazing window into music. I have been listening to Charles Mingus’s music for almost 60 years. This concert is spectacular beyond words.

DubzMusic Are you playing in a big band or others? Are there lots of arrangements for bass sax? I play bari in a big band and wouldn't mind trying bass but don't know where.
Bill Glass you should definitely try bass sax in both just in big bands you need to be aware that maybe you're the only bass sax. I recommend if you do mess up you go in arrangements.
I think so too. I'm only a musician not an arranger. I think I saw a bass only once in a big band on you tube. One should always try but the risk to "mess up" looks really high.
Bill Glass its the same fingering for all saxophones but adding in more air and working on tempo and circular breathing is going to come in and you're going to be exhausted but your body will get used to it thats how Leo has a firm grip in his playing.
I have been around a long time and have never experienced musicianship like this. Where the hell have I been living the last many decades, in a cave? Bravo to all the performers❤❤
Charles Mingus is my favorite jazz musician. Hands down. Favorite bandleader, favorite composer. It's all there. Favorite bassist. I mean he made his compositions nice and bass centered rather than piano centered (thanks to his sympatico pianists) so that not only could the bass breathe but then the horns were breathing too. And Dannie Richmond, his lifelong best friend, was equally deferential as a drummer to his bass playing and that's tough to see in a music where usually when a bass solo occurs the drummer has to back out as much as possible just so you can hear it. Mingus's 1964 and Changes bands are my favorites.
Man Leo P AMAZING I never in my whole life seen a saxophone player play like him and hit the notes he does with the humour and emotion and dancing at the same time without breaking a sweat! It goes to show what that cabal money can train up.
I feel silly for never having heard of my mingus before but I'll be listening to as much as I can from here on out. Thank you leo P for forced the algorithms to recommend this cause I watched you
Nice to hear the bass trumpet getting a rare outing, it sounds like a valve trombone. Leo P is something else, I discovered him on here playing with Lucky Chops and Too Many Zooz on the NYC subway. I bet he has generated a surge in sales of baritone saxophones.
Fire !!! I'm in love with this ensemble . Great instrumentalist . Passion is shown and expressed so fluidly it's beauty in it's raw form . Thank God for Mingus and these beautiful souls .

Everyone obviously is excellent but the drummer is the only one who ran a marathon non-stop. Amazing stamina and musicality.
There's not many jazz stages where Christian Scott isn't the most eccentric personality, but I like his relaxed demeanor here. Plays real well, too.
He was outclassed and upstaged here, and seemed surly because of it. It was fascinating to see him actively try and torpedo the bari sax performance.
