Nile, I remember you following me on my skate instagram page and I bragged about it til this day! Nile thinks im cool! But Nile, you are THEE coolest cat around!! I appreciate just who you are, all that you have been through, and the journey you have taken us through with your genius works! Im 32 years old and remembering my dad playing Sao Paulo when I was a child and feeling like I was going to cry. I now make sure my kids know all your music! Thank you thank you maestro. Still in the game after all these years, you are timeless.

Yeah, however it’s difficult because man… there is so much awesome music. But certainly this is one of the best ever. Really enjoyable every second. Their energy puts a smile on my face.
Others that imho should be in the top charts of tiny desk include Sting & Shaggy, Gregory Porter, Anderson .Paak, Mac Miller, Peter Frampton, Dua Lipa, The war on drugs, The Cranberries. Yeah, I like quite different music. I don’t say this to get exposure but to give credit to all these amazing musicians. Others might want to check out these and other awesome tiny desk concerts. Really a cool format.

I met Nile once on a redeye from Burbank to JFK. I was a flight attendant at the time, paying the bills while beginning my career as a jazz guitarist. I was practicing on the jump seat with a nylon string guitar while most of the plane slept. Nile came by to use the bathroom and heard me practicing a complicated John Coltrane song. We talked for a little bit, and then he picked up my guitar and played some of the baddest jazz guitar on the same tune. I was not expecting that from the guitar player from CHIC!

It blew my mind learning that he wrote so many of the songs I enjoyed since I was a child. His songs were so prevalent everywhere that I never stopped to think who actually wrote those songs. It’s insane how his fingerprints are all over American pop culture, even today. Who else can say that they collaborated with Diana Ross, David Bowie, AND Pharrell? What an absolute giant. Who hasn’t listened to We are Family and Get Lucky? And yet, I had no idea who he was until recently!

My dad was a roadie back in the 70s-80s in Oakland, CA. One night, EWF had a show in San Francisco the same night as Chic in Oakland. I believe Chic was still rather new on the scene, EWF had a large pull. My dad said they set up everything at the Oakland Coliseum (mind you, this is back in the day where you went to the box office to buy tickets so artists didn't really know how to gauge if a show was sold out) and only about 10 people showed up! They invited the staff to sit in the audience to watch and my dad said it was top three one of the best shows he's ever seen in his LIFE! I met Jerry Barnes backstage (the bass player in this video) and told him this story. His eyes were big and he belted laughing because apparently Nile tells this story to EVERYONE and no one ever believes him! Wish I got to tell Nile this story myself! Shoutout to the Maestro himself!!!
