This might seriously be the best sax solo of the century so far no joke. I can't stop watching this performance either. Love your content. Bartley played the mario kart lick on his Twitch recently and mentioned you.
The Sax solo is so insane. I feel like Charlie Parker has come back sober!

More like Charlie Parker. Trane didn't play like that.

@@celtyx9970 What
I'd say this is pre-bop if anything not bebop! And what celtyx meant is that he doesn't usually play like this, he was doing it on purpose for the context of this tune.
@@alexambroise111 I agree it is more like pre-bop, but Bird is another sax player of the same level of notoriety as Coltrane that fits this playing style better. And yes I know hes doing this on purpose, im a huge Pat Bartley fan, but his comment didnt have anything to do with what i said
Like if you’ve come here so many times you can sing along to Patrick’s solo.

the whole video lmao
Only with my voice, when I try with my sax I find out how hard it is ahaha

Echoes of the great Benny Carter in there.
Patrick is such a student of saxophone TRADITION... he is a living testament to all of the masters that preceded him. The old school syrup, sliding, heavy vibrato greatness of the early saxophone masters is so prevalent. And he SWINGS like mad. I've watched this solo dozens and dozens of times and it still makes me smile and shout. Such a great solo and group.
Coleman hawkings!!! Total
Yes Bartley is one of those rare jazz revivalists, dedicated to the craft of acoustic small group jazz. It’s mastery of a musical language, in the same or similar way that Bach mastered 18th century tonality.
And it’s not just in his technique, it’s in his intention, and belief in the power of that language. His cadence, his flow, he searches for the essence of jazz.
@@DeepCrossing1 100%. Not just the notes, but the feel. :)

@3:50 ALWAYS gives me the goosebumps! It’s as if the solo couldn’t get any better, what a climatic cadence it was perfect!!!
Patrick totally ripped, but do y’all know how hard it is to do such a consistent buzz roll for that long while actually shaping and phrasing it? Plus the whole thing was a masterclass in how modern players approach classic style music.
Not a drummer but I can appreciate it. The feel is so different from Kyle’s playing but fit’s perfectly and elevates the whole band. Superb.
Yeah drums are easy
His hands must have been really sore after that! lol
Not a drummer but love how he switched from match to traditional to do it. Amazing musicians!
It's about indeed THAT level they play. Come on, is not getting better , is it ?
What a beautiful, joyous, genius Patrick Bartley is. Even the camera is overcome and needs to take a small break at 3:24.

This is going to go down as one of the greatest jazz recordings of the 2020s.
The Roaring 20's never left
Man I've played that trumpet line at 4:50 over and over and over and over again, it is so damn tasty. Patrick Bartley's reaction is on point! Notice how Emmet Cohen stopped playing a few seconds into the phrase to leave all the space for it to unfold, then came back when it ended. That's interplay right there. Man... These guys are so damn good
I'm there with you bro.....these guy has some tasty lines. I've played the whole solo and I can't still get enough of it😂😂😂😂
I love hearing others talk about what’s going on ‘under the covers.’ This is where the soul of the music lies. The performers themselves are the biggest recipients of the music they’re makiNg
there are sooooooo many of these tasty hard swinging parts it's absolutely incredible. Truly a special recording. Also the block chords my emmet are just.... something else.

Amen! :) Can't stop returning to it!
Already knowing and loving his amazing playing with you and his own J-Music Ensemble, Pat's performance here just bumps up my respect for his musical ability and knowledge even more. The fact he stayed in character for so long, emulating the masters of the '30s and '40s while adding his own flavor to it is just inspiring. Not to mention the entire group was absolutely locked in and cookin'! Emmet and his group always seem to bring the heat!
And you keep it cookin' along as well! Loving your channel!
12:57 it's crazy how much I appreciated Joe's drum solo even more AFTER it ended, the relentless buzz snare conditions the listener to this tension of no solid single hits for a long time, almost like hearing a snare solo underwater, and then when it's released and the whole band comes back in, everything just sounds so bright and open in comparison, it feels euphoric. Excellent work.
yeah, and that fill to bring it back to the head is so perfect
when i first read your comment i was like wtf you mean you liked it after, but then i listened to it and omg youre so right. It's just such a satisfying end and feels amazing everytime no matter how many times i've heard it. also the crash he hits sounded so good
I'm not a drummer and hated that solo. But having read your comments I'm going to try and appreciate it from now on
woah ok, i never really enjoyed the solo, but reading your comment made me try and listen deeper, and man! That's wild! He's literally doing the melody in his own way, i hear it now -- thank you

The way Bruce Harris just jumps in the 2nd chorus with some of the hardest-swingin' bebop lines you've ever heard is so satisfying
Legit. He just picked up where Patrick left off with such ease
He sure did - I just love this band. Patrick is the best Alto player alive for me currently and as a fellow Trumpet Player Bruce is just amazing too. If there’s one good thing to come out of lockdown it’s this - Emmet (I hope) has gained worldwide exposure as one of the greatest pianists of his generation and Bruce and Patrick have certainly elevated themselves into this Status too. Absolutely world class and I just hope that one day I will be able to see some or all of these fantastic musicians live.

It's so "out", and comes in out of nowhere lol and he just plays it with confidence lol
After Patrick's "tour de force", I thought, how the hell do you follow that? But then Bruce did, superbly.
That is quite likely the best sax solo i have EVER heard, and that is saying a fuck-ton. I for one welcome our new Patrick Bartley overlords.
Can I recommend another lesser known sax solo? Its a ballade piece by stan kenton and the alto sax solo in it so well constructed that I'd say it rivals this, perhaps even better, if you'd like to know which its called

@@Doritokid_ That solo is legendary. John Park playing alto on Kenton's arrangement of Street of Dreams. John's son is a bopper very similar to Bartley in his joyous Cannonball bounce. ruclips.net/video/VijQAMq7KeA/видео.html&ab_channel=cooljazzr
Man that drummer sings the melody in his solo. This I dig
The rhythm section just gave a clinic during Patrick’s solo on how to build energy chorus after chorus, to go with and support what the soloist is doing.
I’m currently waiting for new words to be created in the English language to properly praise what Patrick just did.
🤣
Who are these guys????? Dang........this group is LOADED with talent. Tuned in for the trumpet, who did not disappoint, but ....that sax solo, frigging AWESOME! Then the panio strides his way in and uses up the keyboard! Where does it end? It doesn't. Cause the drummer takes us on his trip, building, building, building then flowing back into the group finale! I have loved this song ever since I hear Doc Severinsen scream his solo/big band version.
Fellow Trumpet player here - love Bruce who is my favourite Trumpeter out there currently .... but..... Patrick’s solo is on a different planet with the sic phrasing with the rest of the band, the change to sticks at 2:46 on drums and that Lester Leaps in at the end. OMG.
3:50 has to be the most passionate and melodic little phrase i've ever heard
what about 4:38?
Same! That's an insanely amazing way to climax a solo. The rest of the band help by really making that rise as strong as possible and responding to the whole thing perfectly. One of the best jazz videos I've seen in a very very long time.
Jazz is all about having a good time! It’s about positivity, creativity, expression, emotion, trust, and healing. You can’t have much more fun than they’re having. Just look at their faces! I guarantee you can’t find a sad face in a jam session like this! Everyone’s engaged and supportive when others are soloing. Everyone’s got everyone’s back. It’s quite literally an adventure in the full sense of the term. You know where you’ll end, but it’s up to you how you get there! What a riot!
I like that you included healing in there too. There’s something powerful when music can be a safe place :)
Bryant, what brilliant beautiful & uplifting words…thanks & cheers
Black people are just like that, jazz was born through respect of everything around us. Even the pain we go through, we take it and give the world wonders again. The very first moment we all knew jazz was the sound of our own heart beats. A rhythm that can’t be explain but must go on…

One of the best feelings when playing in a small group is getting so locked in with each other that you can do things like this without a second thought. It’s a truly fantastic experience
#chemistry
Classic interplay, it's the most fun way of interacting with other players. Chick Corea said he doesn't prefer this way of imitation, but the kind of interplay where two players complete each other, not simply imitate.
True dat. This is Miles/Tony Williams level of chemistry.
Patrick Bartley is one of the greats of this generation and I believe will go down as a formative figure of our time. We’ve all heard the phrase ‘speaking through ones horn’ before. I feel hard pressed to think of any other horn player alive that I’ve heard who’s just as fluent him.
For real. He's the one who inspired me to pick up the sax and he's one of my greatest influences. Got a long, long way to go before I'm even a quarter as good as him though.
100%. Also, I find a lot of soprano sax can get rather screechy for my ear when played hard but when Pat plays I don't hear screech, I hear notes infused with rhythm and soul. (I'm thinking of the J-Music cover of 'Price' from Persona 5. ) Whichever sax he plays and whatever style, he just has amazing flow.
There’s a lot of sax players fluent like pat but I do agree, the way pat plays and phrases just hits different

Yes. Its awesome because he can switch styles on a dime. Another solo he might be shredding a contemporary piece with Coltrane changes with the edge of Kenny Garrett. Then the next he will have the driving force of Cannonball Adderley. The world has never seen such a flexible saxophonist!
@@handdancin Buddy Defranco really?! Huh...thats one I havent heard yet. Patrick does also play a mean clarinet so its very possible!
I heard Pete Brown and Earl Bostic, with some Louis Jordan.
8:34 that is some sick nasty stride piano playing.
The drummer's pocket could fit the whole apartment
I just watch this everyday. That's what happens, every single day.
Everytime I listen I'm smiling the whole tune through, but at the phrase at 3:00 I can't stop laughing out loud!!! What a band!!!
I’m so glad someone noticed that too!! The chemistry!!!
Oh my fucking God that drum solo was the shit.. and I’m sorry for cussing but I am a drummer and it’s hard to impress me. It’s in the simplicity yet execution let made it so powerful for me and everyone else is a badass, of course but of course, but I’m going to give my complete love to the drummer. 🤘👍✌️
I don’t know the drummer’s name but will someone please tell him, Thank you!! Thank you for making drums look fun. Thank you for putting life into the instrument so it can resonate with others.
Drummer's name is Joe Saylor
I've watched this so many times. It's so good!! Also, I didn't know Binging with Babish could play the drums so well
I can’t stop watching this, this is so truly beautiful. Everyone just communicating so fluently to each other and creating this amazing aura. This is truly one of the greatest renditions of after you’ve gone I’ve ever seen if not the greatest.
Tell me how I've been playing sax for about 16 years, and I'm not even half as adept on the horn as this brotha here. Magnificent! He channeled every master from the 30s and 40s in this take, straight up possession by the spirits. I'll continue striving to hit this benchmark. Bravo!
Patrick sounds like if Ben Webster played alto sax
Ben, with a touch of Dolphy tossed in.
dont forget johnny hodges, cannonball, bird, coleman hawkins, lester young, etc.
Bruce’s trumpet playing and language is amazing!
Sometimes I come back and watch this video to remind myself why I teach music. I have never not gotten chills watching it and I have seen it at least 20-30 times.
Everyone's talking about Hartley's epic solo, but can we take a moment to appreciate how equally epic Harris' was? So tasty, yet smooth and controlled.
Edit: And Saylor's? Completely different approach to the rest, but just as engaging. A perfect demonstration of how less is more (especially done right).
Ageless. In my opinion Emmet Cohen's sessions are.
Ladies and gentlemen this is Jazz!
Babish sounding good on the drums.
