I don’t think there is enough said about how amazing Emmet’s playing is especially on this track. He plays one of the finest piano solo’s ever on this tune. Unreal creativity, musical elegance and touch. Russell is also amazing. Insane and the rapport between the rhythm section is crazy. But on this track Emmet really outshines. Hats off 👏
The solo is completely mesmerizing and delivers in a way that hits you. Just incredible. I’m typically not the biggest fan of Bruce’s style but, wow, his solo just makes you float in this one.
@@godzoo18 Gad Zok @godzoo18 upload your piano solo and let us all bath in the listlessness of what I am sure would be impotent profundity! Stop being a hater.
Wish my grandpa could've heard this. He got my entire family, 2 generations deep, into jazz. Forever grateful of that, and i'm grateful that y'all are putting out such incredible stuff. RIP.
Patrick is my favorite jazz musician of all time man. Everything he does is so melodic and unique and he just has this way of occasionaly crossing the line in phrases from jazz music ust pure music. I don't know how to describe it, but sometimes he creates phrases that are somewhat simple musically, but fit so perfectly into the context of his solo and the players around him. Idk how to describe it, but it makes sense to me at least. His solos really transcend like in this performance and gain a deeper level of soulfully rich content that really reminds me how much I love jazz. I really take inspiration from people like him, and hope that one day I'm the distant future, I can possibly be a great jazz musician and can do something that is enriching and that I love to do. Thanks for this performance!
Emmets piano solo here is probably one of the best I’ve ever heard from him. Absolutely phenomenal. And Patrick Bartley - holy smokes he can absolutely wail - unbelievable! I can’t stop listening to this track!
Bruce Harris' lyricism is commendable on this track, as well as his expert use of space! (and phrasing, which produces call and response with the rhythm section.)
I have this rendition of the chart downloaded in my car and every time it just starts playing all the problems just instantly go away. It’s incredible.
That rhythm section of emmet, joe and Russell has to be one of the best in the game. Some of the best ears for all of them. Trying to match repetitive rhythms in their solos you can tell all of them were listening so so well
Also - the lead in to go back to the head at 12:04 is PERFECTION!!!! It’s like you’ve got this tune on fire and it’s being gently put out but is still putting out light. It’s absolutely divine as the listener.
Emmet and Patrick yet again prove that they are legendary players of this generation! Also was that a William Tell Overture quote at 3:04? Pure genius!
My 52 yrs. playing half the world with some greats such as Ed Thigpen & I have never heard such greatness & calibre of Emmet & the sax player as you all are ....I was trembling passionately. Thank you
Man, what a great piano solo. So many different elements- strong melodies, quotes, aggressive chordal motion, great vocabulary, and SWANGIN LIKE A GAWD DAMN MUFKA. Truly great work emmet. Thank you!
Thank you all for a joyful moment in my life, reminding me of what is best about humans. All of it is wonderful, and I feel so grateful that you are here and will be here tomorrow, for as long as there is this outstanding RUclips channel and I pray I will get to see the five of you LIVE someday!!! ❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️
Honestly my mind is thoroughly blown, I don't know what's wrong with me, but I have not heard such groovin, musical, high octane but captivating soloing in a good while. Every note in phrase from Emmet just progressed and continued the momentum and narrative forward, so integral and connected yet so vivid, distinct and alive, and Patrick just burning through those out keys and in keys with so much force. Something about this was different than what I'm used to. Every phrase from these guys seems so deeply intentional, not a moment of predictable playing yet still so narratologically potent (by that I mean it all feels so apparently purposeful, it resonates, just feels _right,_ ) just real real mastery over their sound. When musicians attain that kind of control over their tools, there's some other dimension that comes out of the music, just grabs you and enthralls you in a way you just can only get from someone who truly has control over that. It's a phenomenon I don't usually have the blessings to come across often, It's something I usually only find in the real super greats of Jazz, Miles' Four and More, John Coltrane in his modal prime, Bill Evans (...basically everything he did really). Not to be controversial, but to me this is something I struggle to find in most of hard bop and jazz in general, most musicians just don't have that same level of depth and masterfulness and it comes across, but when someone does, it's really powerful. So thanks for being so good, in short.
I'm telling you, every solo from Emmet has this aura you're describing that I've rarely been able to find elsewhere, and I often see it in Patrick Bartley's playing as well. To hear them play together is really a treat.
Most impressed with the Emmet Cohen and Bruce Harris' solos. And the accent on the drums to to end the piano solo. So simple and beautiful. Joe Saylor is one of the best jazz drummers today!
was just listening to the original in remembrance of the Maestro Wayne Shorter and then your rendition of his composition popped up and I believe he would have been so proud of each of you fine musicians and the amazing artistry with which you expressed your emotions through this tune! Excellent Job!!!! Definitely sharing on my time line!
Folks, we've found it. The absolutely smoking hot jazz ensemble of our modern time. And so young to be at this level, them being cats around age 30 I'm guessing. I hope they continue this collaboration well into the future. Jazz just got a lot more exciting 😱😱😱🔥🔥🔥
These clips are just incredible. There's so much great music being put out during covid, it's very hard for folks to stand out. But these clips... crazy good!
“I Could Write a Book” (4:28!) about all the things I loved in this performance! So much rhythmic intensity and physicality in the room that when I closed my eyes I could imagine the band as a dance troupe! My goodness.........

Beautiful song and the incredible musicianship and energy were so thick that you could cut it with a knife. A sincere treat to hear and experience. Thank you for posting this performance.
Emmett always shines. This time, he was trying to catch that beautiful instrument on fire! And Lawrence!!! I have never heard better bass playing anywhere! What amazes me the most is Emmett’s ability to put together small groups of such complimentary ability! Keep on keepin’ on!❤️
I first discovered this tune as the opening track to the outstanding Eastern Rebellion 2 (1977), w/ its alternate title 'Fantasy in D'. 0:18-20 = exactly, quoting 'Firm Roots', closing track from eh same album.
One of the more thoughtful comment sections ive seen...would love to see some comparative demographic/scholastic studies on 'the jazz audience' v others....
This concert has convinced me that Patrick Bartley may be the best living Alto player today
Yea I’m on that train of thought too
Same thoughts, with Soweto Kinch
nah eric marienthal imo
masato honda tho
Don't forget Kenny Garrett
Pat saying "whoa THAT fast" at the beginning 😂
A feeling every jazz musician has had at some point
This Bruce Harris-Patrick Bartley duo reminds me very much of the Woody Shaw-Kenny Garrett duo. I hope there is much, much more of this to come.
Word!
Just discovering them today. Is there an album live or otherwise they both play on?
Very different, but very complementary styles!
Emmet Cohen's "I Could Write A Book" quote stands the test of time
from Cedar himself!
Patrick Bartley plays with the kind of urgency and intensity that cannot be taught. Incredible! SOUND ALONE🔥🔥🙏🏽
Absolutely
Big soul
Sounds a little like David Sanborn

I just realized that Emmet quoted "I could write a book"... THAT IS LEGENDARY!!!
6:02 Man this bass player kills me every time, always tight man I love his whole vibe just smiling the whole way. Love it
This is so burning, I can't believe that Emmet's place still stands... :)

I love how into it everyone gets once Patrick starts his solo 😂
When I saw Patrick take that huge breath at 10:42 I knew he was about to explode. God DAMN this track was burning.
10:46 the fact the drums lined up with the alto hits made it like 10x as cool, so good
After watching this over twentieth time, I came to realize that this is my favorite live from Emmet's place video.

Bruce Harris' lyricism is commendable on this track, as well as his expert use of space! (and phrasing, which produces call and response with the rhythm section.)
His solo is incredibly underrated in this rendition of the chart
I love the exchange of looks at 5:07 between Russell and the drummer once he realised he was on his own
